I think it's worth the effort; I've always defatted my BHO. If I were unable to find a clean alternative, I would probably distill. To each their own.

It really isn't hard to setup, you need a gallon jug, hosing, a 16 fl. oz bottle, ice, a drill, a stove and two large pots. Drill a hole a 1/8" smaller than the diameter of your hosing in the cap of the gallon jug and run it to an identical sized hole in the cap of the 16 fl oz bottle, screw the caps on. Take the smaller pot, fill it with ice and bury the 16 fl. oz bottle. Now, put your 151 proof into the milk jug and place it in your larger pot, fill the pot up with water and heat to 175 deg. F. The ethanol will boil off, then cool and condense in your 16 fl. oz bottle, leaving the water behind in the gallon jug.

After doing a bit of digging, I read instances where people in CA had 190 proof shipped in. IDK if that is possible in WA, though.

That sounds better then the methods I was watching online. How much do you need per rinse? Will what you get from a 16oz bottle last awhile or will I need to use a lot when you rinse?

My other question is... if there is some % of water left over like %10-%5 won't that make the oil more runny even after you evaporate the Ethanol?

It's impossible to get 100% ethanol with a still, you'll always be left with a percentage water. I use a vacuum pump so the water boils off, but you can use a hair dryer to evaporate. I use 50-125ml of 95% ethanol, you don't need much.

There are a number of states that ban 190 but surprisingly most allow 180 which should be fine. Just ask the clerk for grain alcohol. Tell him you making jungle juice if you need to have a reason for it.

I have heard of people making stills out of teapots too put a grommet in the spout with a copper tube running to an ice bath wouldn't be too hard to rig up cheaply if it's what you wanted to do.

    hi FC,

i decided to do my first attempt at a bho run, and decided to go with the SSTB method..

i had a bunch of ABV and last time i did a QWISO run and it wasnt the best, so this time went with the bho run. i also had some full buds that werent premium but got broke up and put in with the abv.

heres the SSTB loaded and ready to blast!

so i blasted them and evaporated in a pyrex dish, inside of another with boiling water. kept water warm until the solution stopped bubbling, then i popped the bubbles.

    then scraped up the results..

and heres the final result, a half gram of some amber shatter.

i did a taste test and is nutty like avb can be. is also gets hard like shatter when cold, and gooey like oil when warm. i tried whipping it a bit to see if i could get a waxy appearance, to no avail.

next run will be no abv, just trim and flowers.

Nice man looks really good for a first run. Did you weigh it before it went in the tube? Just wondering what kind of yield you got. I was gonna do the same thing i got like 30 grams of abv and was probably going to put like a quarter of fresh buds in to bring in some terpenes for taste and boost thc levels.

^^^ thanks, I was happy with the results. I didn't weigh it, but was about a half an oz of ABV and prob like 3 grams of shake and buds. If I had more, the SSTB was full so it would have got a second batch

That looks way cleaner than my tar crap... I did an ABV ISO wash though, it comes out dark green when I spread it. Haven't touched it since, lol.

next time if you are gonna use iso, you could filter the iso before evaping it. that would drastically help i bet

I want to improve my results for next time too. I was hoping for more of a waxy consistency, so it could be handled easily. I tried whipping some air in, but it didn't change form. Any tips?

I did a double filter... it just came out really dark. A lot darker than I was expecting. Looks more like heroin than ISO hash...

Some of you tried to boil your avb with multiple water change, till it comes clear, then dry, then iso ?

That's what I already did, but instead of iso I used vegetable oil cold extraction for an edible form, the result oil was really clear. The effects were amazing.

I'm totally gonna do it again for my next batch with 95% alcohol

my bad man. I shouldn't have assumed. in my original exp i did not filter before purging. and you can see a grittyness in samples 3 and 4 esp... but notice that samples 1 and 2 look substantially better, and they did get double filtered. 5 is an anomaly :p or maybe the Water cure helped wash away the tiny particulate?

boil the abv? as in hot water over 100 degrees? I never used hot water personally. never thought to try it. Generally the rule of thumb I work with is lover temps are better as it preserves taste... but were talking about abv too. so taste isn't such a factor anymore :p

glad your experimenting :) and an edible form of the oil too. interesting :p

I don't think it's possible to get wax from abv oil. I've tried a few times with no luck. 10-15 minutes of whipping and the oil wasn't even remotely cloudy, so I just gave up.

the best I have gotten is near taffy like oil, but still too sticky to touch at room temp.

Almost too sticky frozen as well, but like mentioned it breaks up into more manageable "chips."

hello.... i just received a bottle of 99% iso in the mail. i am giving most of it to my brother in law who has some trim from a growing friend and he is going to experiment making QWISO for the first time. i am awaiting those results to test, but in the meantime........

i have collected quite a few grams (did not weigh yet but i eyeball about 1/2 ounce maybe more) of ABV from my vapes over the past few weeks. what tips do you guys have if i wanted to keep some of the 99% for myself, to make oil from the ABV?? i will be honest, i feel the BHO method is too dangerous for me, so i need to stick with an ISO method. i would like to use the oil i make from the ABV in my EGO pen with omicron carts.

    thanks in advance

What I do when making ABV QWISO, is
line a mason jar with cheesecloth,
    put my ABV in,
pour in ISO until the ABV stops soaking up the ISO and it just starts to float a little,
close up the mason jar, give it a little shake, and let it sit for 45 -60 seconds,
remove ABV & Cheesecloth, squeeze thoroughly to get most of the ISO out.

At this point you should have a fairly dark brown oil with some dark brown/black particulates floating in it.

Run this ISO through a coffee filter, and then Evap off the ISO.
I've only done it 2 or 3 times, but I ended up with decent enough oil. (Nothing made from ABV is gonna be spectacular)

    :peace:
