in about two weeks i will travel to the USA for the first Time and i m pretty excited.

I will be in DC most of the Time and a few days in New York and i am looking for information about the legal Situation in Washington as i would have a REALLY hard time without my medicine...

Besides this, i would be very happy about some Tips what to do / see in DC and New York. I like Arts, Music, Food and Skateboards and i would love to get some insight in American Cannabis Culture as i m quite well informed about Europe but never been to the US.

Thanks!

@Doktor Dub - do you like the beach? 3 hours due east of DC is Ocean City MD, one of the finest beaches in the world. Usually 100,000 people drive from DC and surrounding area to the shore each weekend during the summer. So mid-week is better unless you like crowds. Don't think there's been a shark attack yet this year.

surf is only about 2' to 3', so no long board competitions. Actually the Atlantic coast of Delaware is all one long quite nice sandy beach.

a note of caution: DC is open carry firearms, and americans are very suspicious of "others". UK is okay, i guess.

DC absolutely does NOT have an open firearms carry law. sigh As a matter of fact, while possible to own a handgun in DC after recent SCOTUS ruling, they will make you jump though endless hoops. There are a lot of guns in DC in the hood, few of them legal, but that can be said about Chicago, Baton Rouge, LA, etc.

Read this for DC laws

http://mpdc.dc.gov/marijuana

Short of it is that individuals are allowed to possess and consume cannabis (amounts two be 2 ounces or less), no public consumption and no clubs/etc where you can consume, and its not legal to sell in in any manner or form. So, if you bring some with you, make sure its less than two ounces and watch where you vape.

These laws do NOT apply to Ocean City which is in Maryland and although simple cannabis possession has been mostly decriminalized, don't get caught by a copper with it in Maryland.

Now, the Maryland beaches are very nice though I prefer the Del beaches at Rehobeth, Dewey, and Bethany beaches myself.

Have a great trip.

Thanks a lot for your input, seems like i ll have to go to the Beach :-)

When i get the Marijuana Laws right, it s legal to have up to two Ounces of Weed, it is legal to give up to one Ounce to somebody but it is not legal to sell it.
That sounds far better than the Laws where I come from, but i fear i will not meet too many people who want to gift an Ounce to a stranger.... :-)

Searching the Net, there seem to be some delivery Services in DC (tryhighspeed and KushGods) who operate in a grey Area - anyone some experience with these?

The Dispensaries are only for approved medical Users, right? Is there a way to "qualify" as a non US Citizen?

Any other safe option to get between half an Ounce and one Ounce without getting into trouble and without dealing with shady people (the Comment about Firearms makes me a bit nervous...)

Bringing my own Stuff is sadly no Option for me, as i fly from Europe, as much as i would love to show some nice European Stuff.

Perhaps i should just use to opportunity for a tolerance break, but i fear this would greatly diminish the fun of the Trip and also the fun my Family can have with me......

Sadly, I have no knowledge of Washington D.C. But as with any big city, I'm sure there is an area that may have these guys around.

Anyhow, I'd be extremely careful. Too bad you aren't going to Colorado or Washington State where it is legal.

I would love to get to Colorado and try some specialties, especially as Concentrates are not a big thing where i come from.... But it s to far for my short Holidays and i visit a friend in DC. Sadly, he has absolutely nothing to do with our favorite Plant.

I think when it is legal to own two Ounces, there should be an legal and easy way to get your Weed without the Chance to get in trouble. As it seems, it s not as easy in DC....

Just to clarify, the reason for this is because Washington D.C. is our nations capital as I'm sure you are aware. In Washington, D.C. in order to spend any money, it must get congressional approval. Congress is still against marijuana. So, even though the citizens of Washington, D.C legalized it, since it costs money to create systems to apply for permits, licensing and such, they denied that aspect of the legalization. Yes, I agree. It's incredibly stupid.

no. just no... not only is DC NOT open carry, firearms were banned in the district up until a few years ago. also, it's a cosmopolitan city that has residents from all over the world, and it is host to tourists from all over as well. DC residents are totally used to dealing with "others"

couldn't disagree more. OC is filthy and overrun with kids

So:
1. Don't know about 'tryhighspeed' but I know KushGods has attracted law enforcement attention. There gig is that they 'give' you the herb and you make a donation to their 'religion'. I take it you are not a US citizen. Do you really want to try to dance around laws here and maybe spend more time in the US than you planned. See what I'm saying? If you want to give it a try, help yourself, but i live 5 miles from DC and don't go in and try to skirt the law this way. Just not worth the time, hassle, and possible legal bills.

2. Yes, dispensaries are only for approved med users who must be a Washington, DC resident. People from Maryland and Virginia, the two neighboring states are not allowed to buy under DC med law and I'm damn sure that international visitors ain't either.

3. Forget that handgun reference above, its simply not true. On the other hand, would you as an international traveler and stranger to your own city feel safe going out on the streets and trying to solicit an illegal herb purchase from a street dealer? F*ck no you wouldn't and I suggest you don't try it in DC. You might luck out or you might get robbed or arrested (though the cops have better things to do in DC these days).

4. Using this for a T-break sounds like the best idea to me.

5. NewVapor420 is exactly right about why this stupid, half done, situation exists in DC. Thank our always manipulative, coniving, self-serving, a-hole Federal politicians for this one. I wish other states would quit sending us their scum bags under the guise of them being legislators. Its like dumping trash over the fence on your neighbors property! LOL

Best advise...see DC and enjoy it, jump on a plane to Colorado and spend a few days there. Stay out of grey or black areas of MJ law in DC.

let's be real - it's not "Federal politicians" who continue to sabotage DC, it's Republican members of Congress

edit - ok, yes, they are Federal politicians. but it's the same guys every time, and for the same reasons...

Just so Dab HAppy!
There is an episode of Weediquette on Vice that was about DC's legalization. It kinda dives into the black market and how some use craigslist for selling and/or trading in DC. I have never tried this.

Luckily I have a good friend whom happens to have really nice stuff to trade that is on par with Medical grade flower from Colorado and California. When you are in DC feel free to look me up and I can surely help you out. You just need something to trade me that I want!

Im a Ny'er , try to stay away from Times square , while I definitely recommend taking a stroll through there , it is more of a tourist trap with over priced food and swindlers in the streets. Def take a walk through but I would say try to spend more time in other places. You can see allot of shows and I highly recommend walking through central park. I great idea also is to check out little Italy and def China town . They are right next to eachother and something interesting and different to see. As for food there are so many places , maybe post what you like to eat and I can give some recommendation's. The museum of natural history is great and there are a few other Artsy places right in the area. Also be very careful with the Mary jane in NY , we are not a medical state and it is illegal. Most police will not give you trouble but just be responsible about it.

sorry about the incorrect information about guns in DC ... i saw something about the ban was overturned and thought it was a free fire zone now ... personally, i stay away from all crowds of any size - i assume 15% of any group are packing.

if you want to experience "American cannabis culture," visit a state where cannabis is legal for recreational use. NY and DC are not on that list.

Sushi you can find all over , most are very good, sushi of gari is a hot spot and also a place called Nobu. I highly recommend a place called 17 wohop on Mott street in china down , there is usually a line. It's not fancy at all but the best Chinese food. Cash only and it is under ground. It's a hidden gem and not a huge place but you will see photos all over , many celebs have gone there . You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and the food is very inexpensive. There are two on the street , make sure you go to the 1 that says 17 and leads down stairs. I promise you will be happy when you leave . After that walk down to little Italy , if you like cheesecake my aunt owns a famous small spot called Eileen's cheesecake , it is usually packed but amazing deserts .

I second that vote about Wohop (but only the downstairs one). Been going there for at least 30 years. My Dad took me when I was a very young kid.

It's still great.

Yo Yo, I live in this area also so please bag the political angle. I get enough of it in the WoPo.

I stand by my statement, Federal politicians. That includes the current Republican dominated Congress and current Democratic administration's DEA and Justice Dept, none of which rushing to change the Schedule I status of cannabis or do anything else that would look like logical cannabis policy. Just saying, we'd be better off if we sent all of them home.

I'm hoping to get my username changed and I think this is my first post so hopefully this won't mess things up.

I've been a DC resident for over 21 years and I went to college in the city. We are not a cannabis tourist destination. Keep in mind there are no cannabis clubs here and you have to consume in the privacy of your own home. Patients are not permitted to consume in the dispensaries either. There are no "consumption education rooms" even though I believe there should be. Some people live in subsidized housing where they're not allowed to use - even if they are very sick and that's unfortunate.

Depending on the neighborhood, you'll probably smell it being smoked more than a few times during your trip. I catch a bit of every time I'm out. You might even smell flowers in some bars from time to time. I assume deals are going down or the stuff is being "transferred." You will not get kicked out of a head shop for asking questions about cannabis as all glass is intended for you know what. I think one will even test your cannabis for THC, etc. levels.

Residents can grown their own here (limited # of plants) and I know a few people who are doing that. I'm quite sick myself and a friend of friend offered to set me up and help me get started with that but right now I don't have the time to deal with it.

so i will definitely check out Wohop and also Sushi of Gari and Nobu, sound great. Love good Food, Fancy not needed :-)

I would like to visit some Headshops with nice American Glass, as i worked a long Time in a Headshop in my Hometown and i think there are quite some Differences - there is not a local, high quality Glass Scene like in the US - special Tips in DC or New York?

And my wife would love to see some Stand Up Comedy, not too Big, not to expensive - any god Idea?

Thank you all so much!

I don't really frequent the New York City head shops although I am sure there are some good 1's. I buy most of my glass online and occasionally go to the glassblower/headshop that is about 2hrs from the city as I live on the island about 40 minutes from NYC. As for comedy clubs they are all over NYC , I have not been in ages but I do remember way back visiting Dangerfield's Comedy club and having a really good time. Check out the Yelp app though , you could prob find a few good places with good user reviews.

Also, check out Capitol Hemp. The owners were instrumental in changing the laws here in DC. The prices are a bit high at that store but I'll gladly pay 10%+ over other stores to repay someone who has done so much for the community here in DC.

http://capitolhemp.com

There are nice places to eat nearby and if you like Whisky/Whiskey you MUST check out Jack Rose saloon.
