Herb Grinders

@kellya86 what was the problem you had with your original gr8tr? I had mine replaced (canada) for the loose grinder plate problem.

Just cleaned my jar gr8tr and was surprised at how easy it was. Didn't bother to brush it off or anything before cleaning. Just unscrewed everything, put in a round ziplock plastic container (because they are taller usually) covered it in 70% iso shook it a few times. 15 to 20 minutes later I took it out of the soaking iso, washed it off and it is drying. Seems like everything that was sticky or stuck on is gone without any scrubbing whatsoever. Will know better once it is dry but so far so good and super easy.

I was a bit worried about the plastic jar and the iso but again (probably too soon to tell) seems fine.

Impressed at how easy it was. Saved the ISO to use again for vape, grinder cleaning. Too bad we can't get cheap grain alcohol in Canada because for sure you could make a cannabis infused cocktail.

Still really liking the fluffy grind with the gr8tr. Definitely get more volume which means probably using less but I would think the fluffy grind improves the taste.

I have tried using a coffee grinder, but would like some recommendations for a metal grinder for a Orbit.

@George1151 my problem is that my sifter plate doesn't screw up tight enough, this leaves a gap that fills with a lot of herb....

This means I have to remove the sifter plate after every grind to clean, this is a ball ache....

I wouldn't wash the jar with ISO or alcohol if I were you... You may quickly end with a bleached jar.
Although on they warn us against the usage of ISO with the clear jar on their website...

This is why I had bought the solid jar one, they made concerned about washing this acrylic stuff.

...it says just to use soap and warm water with the instructions for both my gr8trs...one the vape one...the other the clear jar...love them both .

Where on their web site does it say anything about cleaning? I just looked and didn't find anything or any warning not to use iso.

They are mentioning it in the link above, in the third paragraph:

Before using, clean off all individual parts by applying Rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl alcohol) using a Q-Tip to reach all the crevices and hard to reach areas. Some people prefer to simply dip the parts in alcohol to speed the process up. Use a paper towel to clean the outer surface. Don’t forget to clean the grooves on the screw cap. Next, rinse with warm water and allow to dry. Note: if cleaning a 4pc grinder with a clear acrylic body or acrylic clear top lid, do not use Rubbing alcohol, boil in water or freeze the acrylic jar parts as it may create cracks in the acrylic. For acrylic parts, either use soap and warm water or other acrylic friendly cleaner.

This I bought at my local head shop. I wanted to feel it in my hands before I bought another grinder. It's pretty heavy too. It's for a coarse grind. I really like it even though it's kinda big. I found info below on their website. It's $50. It feels as though it will last a lifetime. I have a finer grind grinder. This works perfect.

This grinder has been designed, and optimized to produce a coarser grind compared to our Fine finishing grinder. There is also an undercut on the outside of the bowl to allow smooth operation and less cleaning. The more product you stuff into the chamber the finer this grinder grinds.

NOTE: The larger 3" dia is necessary to allow enough leverage for an average strength person to cut thru with a full load. However the chamber is still small. See images.

An extreme closeup. They have a fine grinder too. It's big for my small hands but would get well with a guy's hands. It's not very stealth with all the writing. I can't say it's a paper weight or a hockey puck.

It's just 2 pieces. I have a couple with kief catchers. Didn't want one. Here's what the grind looks
like, an extreme closeup. They have one with a the finer grind but I'm glad I bought the coarse grind. I needed one.

This isn't a grinder you would take on the go because it's 3 inches across. It would hurt a lot too if it landed on my foot.

I thought I would try some really sticky Gorilla Glue cannabis strain in the grinder. Above pictured the New Vape Top Shelf grinder. It gummed up and was hard to grind. I had to take it all out and clean with alcohol. Then I resumed grinding. I am disappointed in the above grinder because my other grinders have never been so gummed up they couldn't be operational. This is almost new. I hope I didn't waste $50

That really sux Carol. I thought the New Vape 2 piece grinders were something special. I was very close to getting a fine 2 piece as it looked like it would gum up a lot less with the thick rim since I always find that's the first area to gum up. Sounds like you need to say fuck it & get a SLX :2c: :peace:.

As for traditional grinders, I think SCS stays smooth and spinning longer than most but I am real eager for a SLX

Step up to the plate son. You will not regret it one iota. I keep coming back to how clean mine is after months of abuse & the photos I posted a couple of pages ago does not lie. It is the read deal & the screen is plenty fine enough for me with no green tint to the kief.

I have nothing to gain by recommending the SLX except the satisfaction of other users having the same positive experience I have had. As a fairly heavy cannabis user (1-2g per day) it just fucking works. No mess, no fucking about .

I received my order from Everyone Does It of the GR8TR vape grinder. As my first metal grinder, I'm happy! It's exactly what I was looking for, plus the storage is actually really nice. It means less big jars in my cake tin, bonus! I am sorted for grinders now. I can see this one lasting a good long while. Unless I suddenly decided I needed to collect pollen, that is. I wonder, though, if insects and bees have taken much of the pollen before harvest..? Never mind.. random thought.. :)

I've just receive my new Gr8tr SB (10 days from overseas, better than average) and it's all right, no machining mark and the plate is more tight, no way she can move :goon:.

A new gifted screen came with my warranty replacement, and now I can play with multiple part because they didn't ask me to send my old one, here I'm Lego Grinder! :science:

All the time I use mine, I'm amazed by this fluffy grind, the volume it makes is really great for micro dosing. If I want a fine grind with my SpaceCase I've to grind a lot of material upside-down, with a lot of strength turn and I end up with an almost fine unconsistent mess of destruction, but now all I see is a perfectly even grind, fine as I like and all of this, with a few turns, a little pressure and an almost frictionless movement...

All of this with a lifetime warranty and a kind CS, this kind of things doesn't exist where I live...

Although I asked to kannastor about the o-ring, it's not made of silicon as I had said before (my mistake, sorry) it's Teflon, and about removing it for cleaning (or cuting it) they have stated that the o-ring is designed to stay on grinder for life.

So be careful folks while cleaning it (don't try acetone on this it will melt, I don't know about ethanol or isopropyl) and don't try to remove it :)

It could be mentioned somewhere on the user manual, or on the website in order to avoid confusion....

I am being sent my 3rd Gr8tr Jar. First one had loose grinding plate, replacement had the plastic jar separate from the metal ring that holds it and screws into the other parts. Happened when I was grinding, just twisted off. Kannastor said I have been unlucky and the jar has been reliable although they have seen this before. I could have had the solid body as a replacement but I went with the jar again.

Very good company to deal with.

Trying to wrap my head around the benefits of a fluffy grind, which I see mentioned in this thread often.

So what's the deal? Wouldn't 0.1g of rough ground herb get you just as medicated as fluffy ground herb. I understand volume wise, it will look more, but it's not, right? What am I missing?

Possibly increased available surface area....

Maybe helps with airflow too.....

I think the advantage of a fluffy grind is the density. Without packing down, a fluffy consistency will take up more volume - meaning more chambers. Especially with convection, this is beneficial as it helps find the optimum balance between particle size and surface area as well as air flow restriction.
Every vape has its perfect fluff.

An important thing to note too, you can de-fluff flower, but you can't re-fluff powder.

Other than that it's good for certain glass slides with smoking.

In my experience fluffy grind is better for convection vapes. The SLX produces a nice fluffy grind. I have mostly convection vapes, and it works great for those.

The fluffy grind just allows for better airflow, less resistance, and a more even extraction. With a dense grind the part of the load closest to the heater will extract much faster, requiring more stirring.
