My squaredog runs pretty hot. I usually run it around 10.5-10.8 volts with good results. Try starting at 10 and see what you get. It's always fun to experiment. :science:
Groovy thanks for chiming in, and yeah I'm all for experimenting... I'm really digging the process of dialling in the dog.

Unfortunately we can't get 10v since the dimmer that came with ours jumps from 0v to 11.9v -- we don't get anything in between. It does then gradually go from 11.9 to 12.3v, so maybe I can get it apart and try to clean it out or something to get those lower voltages. I'll report back with how that goes :)

Are you using an extension cord with it as well? (The one that came with the dog?) It will also help cool things down a bit.

Sucks that the dimmer won't let you get anything lower than 11.9.

Does anyone happen to have a Spalted Hackberry unit by chance and if so could you post some pictures please? I'm finally in the market for a UD and have been going through the thread and website looking for that perfect wood. The Spalted Hackberry is at the top of my list right now - along with Ambrosia Maple, Dyer Oak, and Spalted Tamarind.

I have a beautiful (but aging) Redwood RockZap and for some reason my eye is attracted to much lighter colored woods this time around. The combination of colors in Spalted Hackberry have me almost drooling!

Hey thanks for the info! We are using the thick glass direct draw stems. Should have mentioned that, thx.

So do you start at 9v and "step up"? Or, when you're going for low temp, what voltage do you use?

Thanks again :)

I don't use a dimmer on my UD any more & like higher temps TBH. I find the UD is best used as a set & forget vape where you find your sweet spot rather than temp stepping. I only marked my dimmer out of interest but if I set it at 9v that is resting temp & 12.3v is vaping temp. The others voltages I marked for shits n giggles really.

The short term solution is just increase your screen distance to reduce temps :2c: :peace:

I moved out of where I was living, into the new solo bachelor pad :) a long time coming, I packaged everything away for the move but the dogs were the first thing I busted out!! I have an awesome little setup in my living room, when I have people over I can throw a few more cords on the surge protector!!

I need to place an order soon for some copper cups and oils and a new lab cord cause mine broke :( I have the box set up in my bedroom :) and I have two little mini's just chilling by my television! There are no pets allowed, but it's a house full of dogs!!

The added bonus of the dogs, they were a great way to feel out my neighbors, nice on demand convection......I have a basement, which is awesome for storage and laundry and stuff, but to get to my basement there is a little shared hallway, my neighbros on the other side.... weatherstripped that door up real nice, got ozium, smoke buddies the whole shebang!! My living room has high ceilings so all this is overkill......especially because when I met him, he was walking out the house with half of a cigarette!!! I can't smell those at all, so there is no way he can smell me :)

Yeah thanks, I'm using the extension, but it doesn't seem to do too much; voltage also reads the same with and without it...

I did take apart the dimmer switch in case I could do anything to remedy it. I couldn't see much to do, blew air into the little holes in the main "dimmer" part, but still no dice, it still jumps from 0 to 11.3 :/

I've ordered a voltage "buck" regulator thingy from Amazon... will try that I guess. I'm hoping it's all we need as we are trying to reduce temps only.

Thanks for the replies so far, I'll post an update when we get closer to dialling it in.

Heya Dogs hope you all had a great holiday weekend, we certainly did. We're now back from our travels and should have all accumulated orders shipped out today.

Getting ready to finally purchase one of these bad boys. Was wonder I my if there are any kind of coupon codes a a I available here that I may have missed. Or should I wait for this birthday sale?
Also, why can I not make selections for a custom vape? Is that something I'd have to send in email?

The only code going is UDFS which gives you free shipping on orders that include a vape. Custom vapes require messaging Underdogette via email or the website but the process is pretty painless. We will have some slight discounts (10-15% max) on custom work at the end of summer for the Birthday Sale but that sale is primarily about lower priced Dogs.

This is the best I could do to get the silicone and glass to cooperate. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this correctly or did I get it right?

Happy Canada Day, Dawgs!

That looks pretty good though the SS tip could (ideally) be inserted a bit further. Did you wet it before inserting? If not then you might that, it makes it considerably easier. That all said there's no specific rule for how much is good, it's really just a matter of needing it to stay put.

Hey all--I recently received my first dog and have to say it's a lovely thing to behold.

I love it and I’m sure we will dial it in perfectly in due time!

It is running on the warm side for our uses. We anticipated that so we picked up a dimmer. With the dimmer the dog seems to either run full out or pretty much off. Put a voltmeter on it and it does slide from 12.3v to about 11.9v, then the next touch drops it right to 0.2v. Does that sound normal?

(I believe I read somewhere that 5v or so is a good range for using the aroma cup so if the dimmer is functioning normally then I guess that won’t happen.)

For non-aroma-cup use, a.k.a. “regular” use, what we seek is low temp. What voltage range should we be looking for to produce about 170-190 degrees C and roast to an even light brown?

Thanks for any help during our journey!

You might have a slightly wonky dimmer from the sound of it. They aren't particularly great for fine adjustment but yours sounds out of spec. Can you return/exchange it? The buck/boost path is a much more elegant solution so hopefully that works better for you. As always we're happy to help however we can when it comes in and you start DIY'ing.

Why not just get the vvps? It's super simple and goes up, and down. I have the dimmer, but shelved it because of the issues mentioned in this thread. I could never find my sweet spot, with the dimmer, but it's easy peasy with the vvps.

I've taken to using two wall warts as well. One runs the vvps and stays around 10.8 for the smaller stainless stems. And I use another wall wart direct for when I go with bigger or glass stems.

Along this subject matter, I plug both wall warts in a power bar that runs off a timer. It goes off from midnight to 8am, but is ready when I am.

Thanks for the reply, we picked up the dimmer from you guys along with our dog, but you have been so generous I'm not worried about exchanging it. Plus, I'm thinking I'll just snip the ends off and use them with the buck box when it gets here, it seems that should certainly cool things down for us. Thanks again, I'll let you and everyone know how we make out.

Hope you had a great long weekend too!

Yes really great idea putting it on a timer in case you forget (or pass out) and don't unplug the dog!

Our update:

We received our vvps (I think it's just a "bucker" no "boost") and it works great. We went with this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/DROK-Regulator-Converters-Step-down-Voltmeter/dp/B00WEBJRE8

Assembly and hooking it up was easy, took 5 minutes. Tried at 10.2, and it produced a lovely low-temp, long session, just our style. Very good effects, and very light, almost still-green, ABV. It was a cool experiment.

Next day, before bed, we turned it up (fresh load), tried 10.8, and I think that's going to be verrry close to our sweet spot. ABV was fully cooked to a light-medium brown. More experimenting is necessary haha.

Too bad we got a bum dimmer, since I think that's all we would have needed, but the fancy box with flashing lights is fun, and more precise too I imagine.

Oh yeah, FYI we are using the thick glass direct-draw stem with a standard core.

Thanks again for all the help along the way everyone :)

Hey Dxer!

Glad you were able to find a good, cheap solution. The dimmer switches are super rough, and don't have a linear adjustment, as they adjust current (and indirectly as a result the voltage), so the drops between positions can be pretty big. Having said that, the tolerances on those things are pretty loose, so it's very possible yours was out of spec, even for the loose specs.

We'd like to offer you credit for the dimmer. Send me a PM, or an email, so I can get that arranged for you.

Thanks!

Thanks very much for the offer--I'll shoot off an email...

I'm sure we'll put it towards our next dog :)

So I picked up the cutest little water piece from the FC classifieds to use with my dog and I got a wonderful porch set up going on last night before bed. It was so peaceful, I had a bit more than I was intending, as one tends to get carried away with new toys. Oh and I certainly got carried. I'll still use it dry with my direct draw stems and through the j-hook but last night was a dream and a perfect summer night to just sit out on the porch with my dog and my new lil banger hanger and just let them work together to carry me away. The Oak OG that my sister picked up from her fave dispensary and the Animal Cookies crumble I mixed in from my fave local place for picking up bargain deals on crumble took all the pain and anxiety and bad things away and just left me in a perfectly calm place where I could do anything, so long as anything was relax :D I slept better than a baby. Gotta remember to bring the phone out tonight to take a picture of my new spot and share it with y'all

So I have officially joined the underdog family as I traded for a nice little Osage orange dog from @Bravesst and she is a beauty...I have zero log experience..I know I have 4 stems a dimmer and an extension cord..one stem is nylon..I guess I'll plug her in and let her warm up for awhile..??
Welcome to the pack! Yes, just plug it in and wait 10-15 mins for a good warmup and experiment with the different stems! The SS tipped stems will run a little hotter in my experience.

Awesome Dog you got btw!

So there isn't enough lighting at night and using a flash would piss off the neighbors and I really don't want that I'll have to get a shot during the day in a few days. I can't wait to show you, might try and make a video of the dog in use, we'll see

Ok so I gave my dog a trial run..I plugged it in without the dimmer and left it on for about 25 minutes and had screen about an inch from end of stem and load tiny bit and tried thru water and instantly charred the load..do these typically have that much power when just plugged straight in??

It seems as though the newer dogs run hot. What style stem did you use? Use of the dimmer may be in order.

Yeah since the latest revision I've had the temp pushed as high as I can without hitting the combustion threshold. That hot and they'll extract a load in just a hit or two a lot of times (varies depending on each kit and strains involved, etc). :borg::o:cool:
