Has anyone with a hot hopper backend, tried a little conductive grease on the backend threads? This might reduce amp loss across the threads and help keep the backend cooler, while keeping the amps up the heater?

Edit: I know we talked about it once, but not sure of the answer.

Edit2: This seems to be what the flashlight crowd is using on conductive threads in bigboy flashlights? Nyogel 760g

For what it's worth, I have seen several others use Oxguard and report they still have hot backends. The heat seems to be emanating directly behind the pocket clip on the vape, not the threading between the body and backend. I used my FLIR to confirm this was the heatsource. But I don't have a chip in my FLIR camera to snap a picture, I need to snag a micro sd from amazon so I can get some photos of the true heatsource for those curious

That is not a warm backend, that is a hot one. I would warranty it. Whatever energy is being used to heat up the backend is power not going to the herb, so you will get poor performance.

I concur 100%, this excessive heat in the back end is power not going to the heater. The back end's heat is excessively hot - I can nearly scald my finger if I hold the vape on the clip.

@Ratchett I had the same problem with my SS, I submitted a Warranty request and they sent me a new back end. Now it is functioning really well. I've been using it all day since I've gotten it and it doesn't get hot anymore.

Wow! That's great to hear - I have heard conflicting reports about this. The metal around the clip get's hot enough to burn my fingers when making direct contact.

I guess after 15 months I'm just happy to have a hopper in my hands. I took it on a recent trip home for several days and it performed admirably for my stealth needs (albeit battery life sucked, but hey, I had 4 batteries and my Nitecore with me - I never ran out of juice).

The Grasshopper is a powerful one-hitter and it's dead simple to use, too, and I'd put both those attributes ahead of form factor when talking stealth. Unless you have a pocket full of metal pens, the hopper is shiny and detailed and stands out, it draws the eye and has non-pen details. My clip isn't strong enough to reliably hold my hopper still or secure in a shirt pocket. The button is significantly larger than most pens, and most importantly, it's much farther above the clip than most pens - this means it stands out, and too high so while I can slip my hopper nicely into my jeans pocket, I can't bend or sit down w/o applying pressure to the button, I've accidentally turned it on getting into the car a couple times.

Also the button limits your single-handed options, especially if you like to turn heater off mid-draw. And it's a big metal <k-click!> twice per draw.

But relatively inconspicuous and you can pre-load and pre-set the dial to pull out, hit, and be done, so yeah stealthy that way.

I like the look of the hopper, but it's the heater tech that's the best part. Mass 3D printing a little metal block w/ a skinny, spiraling tube running through is an impressive accomplishment, and the power and performance are game changers. GH tech in Crafty form factor could mean all-day batteries, cooler vapor, and longer lasting flavor. And that could be the big version, I most want a palmable design w/ extended air path, like 3 1/2-hoppers parallel to each other, load-on-one-end-and-pull-from-the-other style. Or a plug-in that's not much bigger than a Lotus? Man, want GH to finish pre-orders, stock retail, and start on the next generation!

Yeah like a Pax2 is super stealth without looking like anything else, a GH with a shorter fatter body, so bigger batter and vapor path, regular button instead of trigger, that's a locust I'd want, pen was a bonus of GH, the functionality is the real seller and imo it is being limited unnecessarily

I hate, hate, hate crowded theaters. I always time my cinema excursions for an off-time showing at the very end of a movie's run. For me, heaven is me and my vape being the only ones in the theater. Sometimes there will be maybe a half-dozen people in the theater, but everyone gives everyone else plenty of space. I just fire up my vape during the previews. The only problem with this is that once I'm vaped, the previews seem to go on forever.

From time-to-time I wonder if the clicking of the GH on/off button will be a problem in that setting, but I figure the soundtrack volume on those previews is always so loud, it shouldn't be a problem. If I get my hopper in time to check out a summer blockbuster, I'll let you know the result.

I tried GH in a matinee a couple hits, doable but Milaana has been so much better, that'd even work in a crowded theater, hidden in palm and silent stealth no led lights plus just quicker overall too, not quite as small or self contained getting in but doable especially in a hoodie pocket

My SS Hopper is still going strong after three weeks. Although my back-end does get hot as well. Initially I thought this would be a major problem requiring me to request an RMA immediately.

Instead as I've seen from others, HL considers a warm backend normal operation and no need to repair.

However I noticed something about my new hopper with the hot backend - it cooks much slower than my previous loaner I used back in November 2015.

When I first got my SS hopper, I tried to rip the thing HARD like I did with my first hopper experience. Unfortunately I couldn't get decent cloud production and my ABV wasn't dark enough. Once I slowed down my draw speed considerably, I was able to get fairly decent cloud production to satisfy my needs.

Although the difference in performance is noticeable. Clearly the loaner hopper I had with a cold back-end had a MUCH stronger heater capable of keeping up with the heat requirements. My new hopper with a hot-backend has a weaker heater that takes considerably longer to heatup and requires a slower draw-speed to compensate.

Yes I'm not very happy with my SS hopper performance, the back-end reaches over 130F around the clip when I rip it hard with a half-dead battery (freshly charged batteries from my Nitecore D2 seem to run cooler, but the back end still get's hot).

Note if I pull extremely slow, the backend does not get too hot. But I am still only able to get two loads out of a single battery before swapping them out.

Eventually I'll request an RMA if nothing else breaks. But right now they're busy playing catch up. I still have a working hopper - it might not be working GREAT, but it still works. Maybe in 3-6 months I'll fill out a warranty request if nothing else breaks.

My advice to anyone else with a hot back-end: just wait and see what happens in the next few months - you might have another problem and need to get the whole vape replaced. If your hopper is producing vapor, just deal with it for now and carry a few extra batteries with you

Yeah that sucks man, finally sent my ss in so it got there yesterday. I am sure my blue Ti will need it too, fine now but I can see back end is a bit crooked (dial seem) and yeah pessimistic, but I'll just wait til it's unusable and will wait to use the ss when it is back, not using it too heavily either now, just select situations. Will likely sell one since Milaana is my mainstay anyhow, two seems unnecessary for me now. Just need to decide which one to keep...

How much does it cost to send the unit back to hopper labs within the US?

Well, my Grasshopper manifested the dreaded blue/red lights of death last night. So saddening. Have made a warranty request and am waiting to hear back. Going back to my other vapes is so disappointing now.
:\ So sorry to hear that! How long did you have/use it before it died?

I have the same problem since last weekend. But only for a few seconds and not every hit. I still use it because I would miss it too much

Yes I also got the dreaded red/blue light few days back...requested rma and was surpriced when they mailed me out the body right away.

After using the new one a for a day. Started packing up old body to send back. Decided to try old body again. Of course now its working fine. Last couple days really been using and stress testing it and seems fine.

Now I need to send one back..part of me wants to just keep the new one since the old one had displayed the warning lights. Only issue is cosmetic the new body doesn't match as well as draw attention more to unit.

Does anyone know other than the change to the SS finish if any other improvements have been made?

I did email them about it and they said old one should/could be fine. Maybe being vain but really does look better with the old body..but if there was improvements to the new ones of course rather go that route.

The potential drawbacks are outweighing everything right now, and have emailed the team regarding a cancellation. We did pay at time of preorder correct? It's been so long lol

Love my Pax 2, miss my hopper immensely.

I've been seeing a few posts mention a desire for a larger hopper, better this and that and I agree mostly if it was additional to the current hopper.

I in no way feel the current formfactor is flawed. I believe it has drawbacks but essentially delivers on its intended designers promises, albeit not within promised time scales.

However if I had a wish list for the next hopper it would be a modular design preferably compatible with current day ecigg mods.

So that would be a selection of different sized chambers with different cooling abilities and material amounts connecting to the heating unit which itself then connects to existing mod batteries.

I'd like the chamber and heating unit to connect not with threads but with a magnetic click or if that will fail due to heat issues then a twist click method.

Just my :2c: worth.

I feel this way you can go stealth with the off the shelf V1 hopper or go DIY and define your own.

Small chamber and battery for stealth. ;)

Small chamber large battery for all day burnt lips (if that's ya thing). :freak:

Large battery small chamber with cooling unit.:D

Large battery large chamber with cooling unit.:uhh:

Small battery large chamber no cooling unit.

Gas mask attachment, XXXL chamber, backpack sized battery with annual charge cycle, iron lung attachment, mobility scooter for portability. :science::mental::rip:

Wow.

Is this nonsense with failures and hot back ends still going on?

I havent been here for a few months. My hopper died and I havent had the money to even send the damn thing back yet. I thought I'd log in and see whats what and wheres the hot shot.

Very tempted to send it back, get a refund, and buy three VapCaps instead if hopper labs arent getting somewhere :D

Whats the consensus from you lovely lot, have hopper labs got any closer to ironing out the bugs in this thing or are we still seeing what could be interpretted as a somewhat unhealthy failure rate?

Do they do refunds for defective units? Better imo to just post it in the classifieds, even busted. If it hasn't been registered for warranty yet they can just take ownership and have the repair/replacement shipped to them. You could shop them the dead hopper or ship it to GHL once they take ownership and pay you... just a thought to pay it forward

A lot of us have suffered faulty Hoppers, many iterations of a complex product, but some have not had any with their specific version, so many in the wild now who really knows for sure?

My dark gray Ti died on day 3. They sent me a new body for it, it died day 2. The front end on the blue Ti I received had a dent in it (out of the box). They sent a new one that doesn't even screw on tightly, it just turns and turns. The latest SS back end I've received also gets hot, like the one it replaced. Waiting on response to warranty request #14.

I have 4.

Game changer(s).

@emmdeemo, my opinion is that they've figured out how to mass produce something they haven't figured out how to perfect yet.

June Update

Hi Everyone,

We are excited to wrap-up another successful month. Although we did not get through all orders that were estimated to ship in June, we did get through the majority of them. The backlog caused by the charger switch was not fully overcome so we are still a few weeks behind schedule. However, we completed all pre-orders from March, April and May 2015 this month.

The current bottleneck in production is assembly. We have all the parts flowing in smoothly and are working to assemble the units faster. We have 5 new techs learning the assembly process. It takes about 30 days for a new employee to become effective, so we will see the results of more new hires soon.

We will have updated shipping estimates for everyone whose orders were estimated to ship in June but were not yet shipped. We’ve still not hit the mark perfectly with our adjusted dates but they have been much more accurate and we are continually improving. The average wait time for a new order has gone down an order of magnitude in 2016. We are glad you have stuck with the wait as we improved the Grasshopper for everyone.

update.fc6f15a9aa10.jpg

Accessories, shirts and more goodies are in the works. You will see some of this stuff shipping to you soon. We are continuing to invest in the Grasshopper family and have plans to grow the community aspect of the product. We have been blown away by the photos, comments and creative applications of the Grasshopper.

The shipping number tallied right around 2000 units this month. More on the way out this week!

Thanks for your support,

The Grasshopper Team

That is normal, 18650s do the same. It also cuts off at 3.7v when GH shows it dead, which is actually a great level for storage since 18650s can go lower (but they also like a 3.7v ish cut off as well, really 3.5 min)

I wish the cutoff was a little lower at 3.6v These batteries drop down quickly from 4.2v and level off the longest at 3.7v. Might have gotten an extra bowl if they did this and it wouldn't harm the battery.

Liking my two hoppers. Excellent stealth portable. The standard complaints are obvious, relatively harsh vapor, a mouthpiece that heats up in a session, and mediocre battery life.

These are all no problem, as this will be primarily a stealth portable for me. I figured immediately it wouldn't beat good desktops like the Evo or Herbie in vapor quality and experience, or even other portables like the Zion but it doesn't have to IMO. The speed and stealth factor make this a must have, and certainly could work as a daily driver for many people.

So IMO this certainly is a game changer for instant convection based on size and speed plus a built in all in one bowl (vs. a stem system of the Zion, Milaana, Solo, ect.) But i will not say it is as good of an experience as some of the other top tier vapes, but IMO it is unfair to compare it to a desktop or even a much bigger portable ala the Zion.
