Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

No need for pouches when squashing plants imho
I just use parchment for bud, and if I'm squashing hash, I'll wrap it in either a coffee filter or some fine steel mesh before putting it in the parchment
Well I just ordered some anyway a pack of 37u & a pack of 120u , plus some more slick wrap.

This way I can test if I get better results with or without a pouch.

I like the results shown in the video and they use a pouch, so thought I'd give it a whirl.

I needed another doughnut atomiser for my dabstorm pen anyway and it never hurts to have spare parchment, so it was no biggie throwing in some pouches and using the 420 discount code ;)

One thing I notice in the video is they don't squash the pouch into a puck before squishing, which many recommend.

I understand this is to create more surface area, but is that really necessary if you are applying 10kPSI?

I appreciate the reasoning when using hand powered hair tongs.

I guess it might help stop pouch blow out?

again, not an expert but from my understanding only flowers get pucked, its to make the surface area uniform for squishing.

something in an envelope is already "pucked" by the envelope itself

You're getting there!! A few comments...

The second press rosin you mentioned earlier. I also find it hard to collect sometimes. Usually when I experience that it also doesn't taste very good. Tends to have that vaped taste. The second exposure to heat can also extract some chlorophyll from the flower. Taste suffers as a result.

You're starting to get the hang of it! I still use a hair straightener and press to make rosin. I place the pre-pressed puck into a folded piece of parchment paper. That goes onto the press. The reason I like folded parchment paper more than two pieces is that it forces the rosin to only move in three directions from the fold. I also use the rectangular shape of the plates to my advantage and line the material along it such that when the rosin starts flowing, it flows right off the sides and into an unheated area. You may also want to experiment with directional flow, folding the parchment so that the rosin flows out one end out the side of the plates onto another piece below.

thanks @Quetzalcoatl , the second press I can't collect unless I stick the parchment in the freezer, it's too gooey, as you say, it tastes a bit funky also, but I have decided to keep two coils, one for 1st press vaping and one for 2nd press, so the dabbing experience isn't contaminated.

I haven't worked out the perfect pressing ritual yet, but it is certainly getting there, and that rosin tasted lovely and I got seriously medicated last night, so I'm definitely on to a winner!

Edit: I'm definitely getting somewhere...

I used a 0.55g nugg...

I squished it by hand with a wallpaper scraper, folded the parchment as you say, and ensured I squished on the edge of the heat plates...

A few more tweaks and some better quality bud and it certainly looks like I'm onto a winner :)

I prepress hash and flower into sheets myself. You can easily cut to desired size and weight.

Flower filters great on its own, especially with prepress, but there is contaminate.

In my opinion. Which I question after Cherry Blossom told me she presses bubble at 120F and winds up with shatter qualities.

I can't even press below 150. Well the new one will be able to.

That's neat @1DMF, I priced out a 12-20 ton for around 500 (Canadian) too. I feel like less of a tool doing DIY.

I press at 150 just with straighteners but I get between .45 and .49 back from 1g
Check the avatar each of those is 1 gram of leb (.45)
I use 25 micron stainless steel mesh
Only need to press once
The darker ones are higher in cbd and the lighter thc
Both shatter

So I don't like filtering When i actually press, the big filters needed for the flowers absorbs too much oil. but i got a new banger i spent big bucks on, and i don't wanna fuck it up so i got on a filtering tick.

It's fun to filter it all after collection because you get these fun rosin rivers... my good cam wasn't charged so no nice pics but i'll take more soon. They're both from the same bud, but the first blackish goop is from a half oz worth of third presses saved up. Don't judge it based off the color. The actual flower was a weird fruity/blackberry/skunky smelling loose flower with pinkish purple pistols. And i'm still averaging 20% on the first press with the 8 tonner. I had some flower that only gave 15, but that's as low as it's gone. I definitely prefer this over any other extraction method.

i may be running i to some trim and want to do some squishing. any advice for trim?
Depends on the quality. Honest, I'm kind of picky and when I get a bag of weed I like to pull off all the sugar leaf that's left post-trim that still has good trichs on it and I can press that out and get some fire. It's the sugar leaf on the actual buds though, not sugar trim, and not "trim" trim. Best bet, or at least what I would do if it's a fair amount, is to kief it and press that. Dangus did just that a page or two back, 40ish grams of trim into sift into 4 grams of rosin.

yeah i had thought about possibly trying that. a dry ice shake perhaps.

so would one be less worried about shaking for too long considering the press should separate most/any plant matter? should i filter?

yea filter, as long as u adjust the micron size accordingly u should be fine..

speaking of which, what size micron filter bags are u guys using for flower and kief?

i have another question for u guys.. to this point i have only been pressing fief from my trim bins. now i have a lot of flower to harvest and i was wondering; is it better to press the buds them selves or to dry ice kief the buds and press the kief only?

im thinking the kief would yield better (require less presses) and likely be more contaminate free but the flower would be more flavorful..

I've been pressing nug almost exclusively. I have enough grinders to kief the bud and press that, but end up just squishing flower instead anyways. The kief will yield better in terms of percentages, sure, because flower has more material than the keif that comes off it. May still end up being the same amount of oil in the end though, even if flower was say 25% return and kief was 50%, but both still yield say 2 grams. Just how much work you wanna do I guess. If I had to do a LOT of flower I might consider kiefing it or doing a full-spectrum bubble wash (so just pull the contaminate bag out and then all the useful non-cooking-grade microns get dried and squished).

And yeah I think at least some of the terpene content may be in the actual plant matter that isn't trichomes. I haven't pressed enough kief, or done enough experiments with the same batches of flower to see how it changes flavor profiles. At least for me it's easier to pre-press the nugs into coins and then press those, rather than kief them and prep.

This was @ the Miami 710 Dab Day Party last night. CRAZY small 20 ton unit. Built like a brick shithouse. Only like 14-15 inches high, not positive on that I don't remember what they told me. Plates are ~5" x 8". I think it adapts to any kind of pump you want to use, hand, hydraulic, or pneumatic.

This beast weighed 50 lbs. It would totally fit in a backpack, but probably rip right out the bottom!

EDIT: Found the link http://www.newvape.com/micro-20-rosin-press/

Also...does anyone use these terp tubes? I don't use the bags and thus have been limited to under 6 tons when I press...but I get a lot out of the pucks down the road.

tubis_copy_ae03c565-6a44-499f-ad9f-278f270182a9_1024x1024.jpg

I don't have great access...so I need to maximize my product. Using the bags was a huge waste for someone like me. With a 2 ton press I am able to keep my flowers, and when the oil runs out...I grind up the pucks and vape it. I was shocked at how much goodness was left, I got quite a buzz. After its all vaped up, I puff the duff. I know it sounds crazy, but I still get very lifted from the duff.

I miss crumble. I miss different consistencies that fit different situations. Anyone every try and vac rosin press oil into another form?
Rosin from low temps regularly butters for me. Then if i leave that out for a few more hrs it dries to a more dry butter/crumble type cakebatter. I dab it before it gets to a crumble, but i'm sure it would turn into one.
