Going from medical to recreational.......

In November, a vote for recreational marijuana will be on the ballot in California. To those who live in states where recreational use is legal, how long did it take from the time the ballot measure was passed before shops began to open up.

For WA state it was voted in Nov. 2012 for the legal recreational. The first state authorized recreational store opened up July 6, 2014. Now true medical dispensaries are closing today. Be careful what you wish for.

A very sad day for many. I asked where their stickiest Indica was with the highest THC levels. I wanted as much bang for my buck as possible. Also some edibles that I won't be able to find anymore. I ended up with Black Cherry Soda or aka Cherry Pie. I'm stocked up.:D

Wow. So it took over a year and a half before the first store opened after the bill was passed?

How odd. You'd think that the medical dispensaries would be able to make the transition to recreational stores fairly quickly.

Oregon here. We voted on November 1st, 2014. First day we could purchase was October 1st, 2015. Then, on June 2nd, 2016, we were able to purchase concentrates and edibles.

Although.. the black market pretty much opened up to grey market immediately after the vote.

A lot of medical dispensaries didn't get licenses. The medical dispensaries were told they didn't need to apply because the new law wouldnt effect them. Then the legislature changed the law. They said that the businesses needed to apply by a certain date so it left many out in the cold. There are a few medical dispensaries that got a license.

Check out the other thread about WA state medical cannabis. It's a real shame for the medical patient. Some can't afford the taxes added onto their meds. 37% if on a registry, not on a registry 47% tax. Prices were about $8 - 12 a gram at most med dispensaries I've gone to. Pretty reasonable prices.

The half oz I bought today at the medical dispensary was $140. That's the most expensive. Many are cheaper than that.

I'm really curious about the quality and the variety that will be available. I'm a worrier so things may turn out OK eventually. The legislature needs to fix things.

....wondering if the cal. Model will have a high degree of variance...there are some municipalities which have resisted even offering medmarij...in sf dispensaries tend to be in poorer sections of town.. doubt recreational use will change that dynamic...so weird I know a number of people who use dispensaries but ...scream like animals if there's a permit to put one in their neighborhood...

So was there a major price increase from the recreational stores as compared to the medical dispensaries before the recreational law was passed?

Also, did the quality change?

Yes higher prices for flowers. Huge price hike for edibles-like double. Many products won't be available. There will be no medical farmers markets where you can get good deals. I've been going to 2 of them. You can find good quality cannabis for sometimes half the price. Sometimes not though. It depends on the vendor. Lots of homemade edibles and medicinal creams. All is no more.

Read the article about the veteran who owns Rainer Xpress Medical Cannabis Dispensary in Olympia WA. How the lawmakers screwed him big time.

Edit
I wish we didn't get legal recreational cannabis. I liked the medical cannabis, it includes pain and a lot of other illnesses. I'm happy for the folks that won't be charged with felonies anymore.

PROTECT YOUR MEDICAL CANNABIS!!

Yeesh...sketch. I've been long time wanting recreational legality and this is the first time thinking this but perhaps us Cali folks should not rock this perfectly floating medicinal boat..after all it is the easiest thing in the world to get ur medical license here...even online $45.

Yeah.......Arcadia/Pasadena (where I live) does not allow medical dispensaries within their jurisdiction. Guess they won't allow recreational stores either.

Currently, I either have to travel a bit or go with a medical delivery service.

Sounds like for me, staying medical is the way to go, eh? (like I really have a choice in the matter)

...thinking recreationa use is going to be perceived by many as...undesirable...it's funny I know of no evidence showing that dispensaries create a environment for criminal behavior..yet that's the perception..and in that arena. Nimbyism rules...

Same here in Murrieta. Deliveries only. No dispensaries are permitted. About 20 mile drive for a walk in, shitty quality though. 40 miles for better clubs.

While where I'm originally from, San Fernando Valley, there are probably more dispensaries than there are Starbucks. I mean they are literally everywhere.

As you pointed out - it will be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out for recreational.

That's the problem here in WA state several areas don't allow cannabis at all, medical or recreational. Which is a hardship for medical patients that are severely ill some with cancer and AIDS. Our state voted for cannabis and it passed, that includes the whole state. Some areas shouldn't be able to say no to it.

Any law can be changed depending who you have in the legislature and who the Governor is. We didn't think that the medical cannabis would be changed so drastically. Many realized the medical needed to be tightened up in WA but not dismantled basically. It has been suggested some law makers got money from recreational cannabis stores to vote in favor of them and get rid of the medical dispensary model.

I believe eventually there won't even be medical cannabis. It will all be the same in our state.

If your state needs to balance the budget they could use csnnabis as the state's cash cow. Taxing it until it's not affordable to many. I feel really passionate about this. Watch out for greedy lawmakers.

They also just raised our gas tax by 5 cents. They like to really kick a tax payer when they are feeling down. Electric car users get to pay $50 more per year instead of $200 it will be $250. A person pays all that money for an electric car and then have to pay more for an electric car tax.

The voters screwed themselves on the FreeDUMB alcohol market too.

Lived in Topanga Canyon for about 8 years back in the 70's and worked in Canoga Park. THAT was fun. But yeah, San Fernando Valley, home of cannabis dispensaries and porn production.

I was actually pretty alright with the regime where we had 'medical marijuana' in CA under 215 and 420, and possession of small amounts had been largely decriminalized (like measure Z in Oakland) or reduced to a fairly small fine state wide. The recent laws passed by the legislature which came into effect at the beginning of the year concern me a bit. I have earlier expressed skepticism here about the measure coming up on the ballot in November. Government, it seems, is pivoting from ferreting us out and shoving our asses into prison for cannabis to taxing and regulating our asses off for cannabis (with a transition period where they do both!). I suppose it was inevitable but I find myself somewhat bitter amidst our seeming victory in legalizing. Bottom line I guess I can live with it as long as I am allowed small-scale cultivation for personal consumption.

I do chafe a bit under the plant number restrictions which every state seems to adopt, even Colorado. They don't make sense, don't achieve what lawmakers think they do and are just a stupid inconvenience. The grow area size limit of 100 sq ft per person is adequate, I suppose. Why we have to have limits like that at all is beyond me.

...the problem is...( and I do believe they know this) I'm NOT inclined to vote against a marij. bill...being a kid who used to by "nickel" bags from various sleazy locations in harlem in the late 60's...never thought I would live to see this day...

Legal recreational is the right thing to do. Medical only makes for a huge black market for those of us who do not want to claim a listed medical issue for whatever reason. Legal rec is also good for residents of other (close?) states.

Here is the current menu from a Spokane recreational retailer. These are out the door prices, after the law change July 1. Lower than I have experienced in forty years of use. Excellent quality too. http://cannabisandglass.com/pages/cannabis-and-glass-menu

On another note related to changing political norms(?). Here in Idaho it is now legal to carry a concealed firearm anywhere in the State, including cities. No permit, no training, no background check, no firearm or related legal knowledge required. Needless to say Idaho legislators do not listen to our police.

I recently stumbled across this article, I agree with it for the most part and am as a medical user encouraging all California voters I know to vote no in November. We don't need 62 pages to legalize recreational cannabis, and we especially don't need the mess that is on the ballot in November.

Good article! I plan to vote no on the ballot measure in CA in November. I want recreational to be legal as much as the next guy but that 62 page monstrosity is full of poison pills. We have a good medical system and recreational has been largely decriminalized therefore we are not in a hurry here. The initiative is a mess which will lock in all sorts of idiotic restrictions. It criminalizes as much as it legalizes. It is not as bad as that Ohio thing that failed but it is pretty bad, actually. California's recreational legalization should be as good or better than Colorado. This measure is not as good as what was done in CO, by a long shot.

Wow, those prices are low.........actually, they are half what the prices are here.
