Discontinued The Grasshopper

Perhaps this question should be in the warranty thread but not sure if anyone actually views it...

Anyone have any experience with HL sending a new back end due to warranty? I would imagine it has a diff serial number? How do we keep it registered for future warranty?

Also Caroline said to hold on to the old part until I know it's fixed...wondering what others have done in this situation?

Good news is with the warranty process they were extremely quick and willing to send me a new part...

Hopefully this will do the trick as the hopper is sumpin special..;)

Thx FC'ers!

Well, after 4 failed front ends and 2 failed chargers, my Hopper days are over. I cannot take any more warranty claims in such a short space of time and have returned mine to Vapefiend for a store credit. I will be giving the Cloud Evo and Turbine HT a go instead.

It's a real shame as I love the Hopper, but until they sort the reliability issues out i'm gonna abstain.

I am just starting my warranty experience, but hope it doesn't go like this. Some others reported their devices were sent back from HL and not repaired. I will have to keep an eye. I will absolutely refuse to pay shipping if they screwed up a warranty claim.

I wish they would send me the parts and allow me to fix it myself. I don't trust their assemblers.

On another note where are these other threads? Anyone else having trouble finding them? Maybe no one uses the shipping and warranty thread bc they can't find it or know it is there.

Here's the warranty thread, but it's not what I was hoping for: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/ethics-karma-and-grasshopper-warranty-discussion.21860/

And here's the shipping thread, which sees a lot of activity: http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-grasshopper-shipping-poll.18100/page-178#post-987089

I just got my SS Grasshopper from VapoShop. First impressions: it's bigger than I expected, but not by much. Just a little bigger than a regular pen:

YWzAcxJ.jpg

I plan on using it without the silicone tip as much as possible. So far I haven't even opened it yet.

Taste at 3 is delicious, with a good amount of visible vapor for ~330°F. After 3 hits in a row without turning off at temp 3 the mouthpiece is almost unbearably hot.

Taste at 4 is still great, with thick robust vapor. Single hits are not uncomfortable at all. I am definitely going to be using this more as a one hitter which is exactly what I planned.

The backend barely gets warm at all, even after 3 consecutive hits. So far, it functions exactly how I wanted it too, and I couldn't be more happy with it.

I have to head to work now, afterwards I will be using concentrates with the GH so I will be sure to report my results here. Happy Hopping! :leaf:

How do other's backends handle longer sessions? Mine gets uncomfortably warm at times after several long rips on 5 but not to the extent of actually being close to burning me, and it seems to happen more on a drained battery and when I'm touching the clip ring while drawing on it. Other than that mine is working great. I haven't used the silicone tip at all except to test it, and my general starting temp is 4. After I stop getting vapor I turn it to max and finish it, and mine never really gets too hot for me to hit. Though that's just personal use, taking hits at my own personal pace. Hotter on my hands than my lips, really.

Anyone have any issues storing extra batteries or the hopper in a car during the day? Wondering if it would be hot enough to affect the batteries...it's hot in so cal!!:)

I would imagine the standard temp ratings of lithium ion batteries apply. Generally at temperatures around 70-100C permanent damage can occur to litiume batteries.

Read some old posts it's covered time and again. It's probably a warranty issue.

I have read every post in this thread. I'm not having any problems with it, all the people with faulty backends I've seen didn't perform well and were so hot on the back as to burn someone, which isn't the case with mine. I'm wanting to know how people whose hoppers are running normally heat up on the backend after extended high temp use.

yeah dude i would avoid leaving it in your car in cali right now, im also in cali so i know just how hot it is. And ive read the temps in the car can reach 170F+. Id imagine just like any other vape batteries in that temp, there is a potential for harm or deterioration.

My GH is operating normally. My backend does not get hot whatsoever. After prolonged high temp use the backend is slightly warm....as if the conduction of heat from the front end has heated the entire unit...normal. I do not sense any type of heat being produced at the back end...only heat from the front end which transfers ala conduction as would be expected.

So my Ebay hopper just came in about an hour ago. Suffice to say my worries about the warranty and buying an item off Ebay were all for nothing thankfully as I was able to register my hopper warranty with no issue on the site. As for the vape itself all I have to say is... Wow! The vapor might not be the tastiest on this thing and the vapor might be a little harsh but wow can this thing pack some HUGE clouds! I also love that you really need to hit this thing hard to get a good amount of vapor from it. It's a nice change of pace to the long slow draws you have to take with most other vaporizers. My only disappointment right now would be that they gave me an extra battery and no way to charge it! So I just ordered another battery off ebay(for only double the regular price :( ) and a nitecore D2 external charger so I'll never have to worry about batteries again. This just might replace my Mighty as my daily driver once I get the battery issues sorted.

Absolutely do not store hopper or any other lithium batteries in a car, particularly if it is hot and sunny outside. It can get hot enough in a car with the windows rolled up to not only damage a battery, but possibly to cause it it vent.

I saw this pic posted on reddit, guy left his ecig (mod) in his car in Florida. So yeah, not recommended...

Mine works like Jabba described. The back end is the least warm part of my GH when using.

Mine gets super hot...not the case for the first week...so I started a warranty claim..they are sending me a new backend...super easy so far. I'll let everyone know if it's the fix needed..

Can you cancel? HL will send you batteries right away, just buy them and they ship out.

I will be submitting a claim then. It's strange that it's malfunctioning on the backend to me and yet I'm not seeing any performance degradation.
my backend also gets hot sometimes but in my opinion this is normal...
as far as my gh works I want bother with warranty...

The only reason for the backend to heat faster than the middle is unwanted resistance. I've just sent in my 3rd faulty backend - it worked great w/ no extra heat for awhile, then had irregular heat for awhile, then the backend heat became more consistent and the performance hit was too big to ignore, this is over the course of 5-6 months. Don't want to speculate as to what's going on inside, just saying the backend is the farthest from the heater, and my Hopper experience has led me to want it to be the slowest part to heat up.

So I’ve been away from this thread since I canceled my GH pre-order last fall, but glad to be back and great to see folks finally getting their long-awaited hoppers. Painful to read of some folks having continued failures, but from what I’ve gleaned from the last several pages it does seem to have evolved and the newest ones tend to have less failures - or at least I hope so ‘cuz I just got me one :)

Briefly here’s my story then will share some initial thoughts. I was originally a Feb 2015 pre-order, cancelled in October because it was obviously not up to snuff yet, spent the next 5 mos waiting for the Zion that never came, finally cancelled that and got an Underdog for home and pre-ordered a VapCap Ti for away, which I recently received. Love both, except that the VC which I thought would fulfill my portable needs, doesn’t work in the slightest wind - so forget using it for hiking. The silver lining to that was that I had never really gotten over my GH VAS… so this gave me the justification to finally get that hopper.

At first I was thinking I’d go for one of the overseas shops because no way in hell I was gonna wait for a pre-order again, but then I found a SS GH on eBay from an authorized GHL reseller that included lifetime warranty, extra batt & free shipping for $250. Basically $60 more than the same woulda cost via another pre-order wait hell, and a good deal less than the overseas shops. Emailed the seller to make sure it was the most recent iteration with all the latest updates before I bought, and it was. Ordered it Friday at 4 pm, had a tracking number within the hour and it was in my hands by 9:00 this morning (monday).

Looks & feels awesome. A bit larger than expected. Oh cool - my serial num ends in 420!!!

And….. it works!!! Quick empty run at first, love the lights.

First load only 0.05g of fine grind on temp 3, fairly cloudy but I see right away that I won’t be using it without the silicone extender. The solution some have suggested to put lips past the cone, gets my throat way too close to the hot air/vapor. Third & last hit with silicone mp was much more comfy. Second bowl on 3.5 but I filled it too full, esp considering the fine grind, so not much clouds on first hit but plenty by the third. Keep forgetting to turn it off before end of hit - guess I’m done for now :ko:

Later: bowl #3 on temp 4.0, half loaded. Much more flavorful hits & bigger clouds than my first 2 bowls, starting to like this quite well. And now I just tried it with my MFLB glass MP attached to the silicone extender, as was suggested here awhile back, and it’s the cat’s meow

OK I’m fully on board with this thing now. Need to spend a bunch more time with it to get to know it, and I don't ever expect to reach the levels of yumminess of my UD or VapCap, but so far it’s a bit more flavorful and less harsh than expected. Extraction abilities are certainly right up there. Back end is staying cool... the only part that gets hot is the MP and the silicone thing solves that. Love the no stirring and minimal cleaning. Love that it’s self-contained and will be so easy to carry along on hikes, kayaking etc. Fun and a no-brainer to use. Stealthy in a james bond-esque sort of way.. even the silicone mp looks just like those rubber thingies on the end of ergonomic pens.

Also just realized I’ve finished bowl 3 and the battery is still going strong with no flashing - whaddaya know, it’s the little hopper battery that could! I don't intend to use the included USB charger - I know it’s supposed to be upgraded and probably fine now, but I have far more trust in my Nitecore D4.

Speaking of batts, ordered 2 more spares from GHL for a total of 4, plus extra silicone mp. Emailed Caroline on Friday when I ordered those to make sure of no delay on those, just got her response that they will be shipped tomorrow.

So far I really dig this little self-contained stealthy cloud machine. Fingers crossed that it keeps working.

May your hoppers keep hopping happily.

:peace:

I have a few theories..

Poor performance culprit?

Albeit I have no doubt that a lot of our warranty claims are for good reason I have a few theories that I would love some FC hopper feedback on:)

1) I feel like there is a wide degree of performance from battery to battery...I have 5 that I swap so I can never tell which one it is but I'm pretty sure at least one, even when fully charged on my nitecore i4, seems to give pretty wispy vapor on all temps...also seems to drain real quick..I swapped batteries this morn and got a huge cloud from seemingly spent herb..I'm guessing cuz this battery was actually full.

2) maybe this is obvious but as I am a long time former combuster and a noob vaper it seems there is a wide variance in vapor production based on herb strain. I recently got some indoor green crack that was very fluffy and seemingly moist and it was producing very light vapor...I confirmed this by giving the vapcap a whirl and same thing...this is new to me as I have yet to meet a strain that could withstand my old combustion ways ;)

I wonder if anyone else is having similar issues? I would imagine both of these scenarios would create an extra hot back end..although I'm no engineer just a young hopper philosopher that has much to learn...:)

Any ideas for diagnosing a bum battery? Or for getting hard to vape herb more vapable?:hmm::razz:

Believe me, I too wish we were able to provide a faster (more expensive) option for US customers. But please know that we were a bit overwhelmed by the amount of GH orders after posts on here and on Reddit. We primarily serve the EU market (and offer fast - free - express shipping to most European countries), but we don't handle large amounts of orders to the US and so our current contracts with shipping agents don't include a faster option. With all these orders coming in we figured the best thing is to inform people as good as possible about the shipping time. Thank you for your patience.

I'm sorry to hear you've not received a tracking code. Feel free to PM me with your order number so I can look into this for you.

Hi still waiting, just to clear it up I am in Australia not USA. Ta

Certainly batteries may be an issue...not sure how to tell except to 'repair by replacement' and see if other batteries are better as you suggested.

As for vapor, nice fresh moist herb is hard to vape. Try this...take some of that Green Crack, grind it up, and set it on a sheet of copy/printer paper for a day to dry out some. Try that and see if it doesn't improve your vapor production.
