Discontinued The Grasshopper

My Hopper's backend (old style, I think) burst its seams a bit when I was rotating the dial earlier. It didn't completely pop open and spew parts everywhere, but the band around it popped out a slight bit. It's also now a lot rougher when I try to turn the dial, getting stuck in some places.

I know some people have experienced similar problems in the past. What was the verdict? I assume I'll have to send in my backend.

I've had my Hopper since Nov 2015.

Warranty claim and a replacement with back end V2. That's the exact reason they changed the design. They will ask for the complete hopper so they can check there are no issues with the front end whilst they are dealing with it.

I can't hide it in my hand like I can Milaana. Walking around the city in use, I could see more people taking notice when I hit the hopper than the Milaana, maybe where the sexy looks can be a negative (like even as a pen, if I saw that on a desk I'd want to pick it up and inspect for sure). It looks like a pen, but people don't inhale from pens, when I inhale from Mi it is clutched in my fist hidden very well imo, the length of GH makes it more exposed and the fact that I need to reach the clicker whereas the button on Mi is more ergonomic in use. Then the fact that GH has led lights and the loudness of the clicker, both still easy to take rips indoors wherever, but like in a movie theater for example Milaana was better (silent and actually a bit quicker to hit as well), even in a car I feel like its been more stealth for me where the grasshopper is a bit more flagrant in use. There are ways to offset and hide GH better I'm sure, but in my experience with both I have found it less ergonomically stealth in use out and about, despite it being easier to just grab and go
But from distance doesnt it look like a a type of e-cig. Why do you have to hide it. e-cigs are legal. To me thats where its stealth comes from

Yes it does generally get viewed as just another ecig. I've used mine within sight of police and didn't raise any suspicions.

There's an official V2? Sorry, not caught up on this huge thread, last time I was paying attention they were clearly making changes but not sharing info. My warranty return #6, a couple months ago, didn't really take care of my issues so I've been waiting for them to catch up w/ preorders, hoping that would give me a better chance of getting newer parts/better solutions. Well, now I'm more excited about warranty #7! Thanks.

Yeah, arguably so does the Milaana look like a mod. I don't want to be seen doing it regardless, don't want to call attention whether it can pass for an ecig or not (which the clouds and the way you hit it, imo none truly do, disposable oil pens and cartridges do, but liquid to liquid so ofcourse). For me the idea is to not be seen, not cameoflage as a ecig, in that case many many vapes can do that, it's more about being discreet since I don't want to look like I'm using an ecig or whatever either frankly. Honestly even though now I am in a place that makes it very easy to be more flagrant regardless (CA so always people with dab pens around and often blunts and joints too), I am still relatively cautious in my own way and very stealthy discreet like before. Overall I can be quicker and less obvious using Milaana as an anywhere portable than I can with GH, but let me be clear both are extremely useful in this way and the best compared to most other options, both are still top tier vapes for performance and portability in my experience :2c:

It should feel cooler with more herbs in and I think that that's what he said as well..

I am going to keep experimenting but so far it feels cooler, particularly cooling down with less in the chamber. I've been using a loose pack and it would be about half full chamber.

I wonder if someone could either point me to the post in this thread with details about GH version 2 or describe them here? Is it out yet? Thanks!

With the initial batches the back end was like a few mm too long, which caused the GH to feel way to hot, and eventually the back end to go flying out. HL would fix this by shortenning the back end and then yeah. Thats probably what that person meant by v2, its more like updates along production as problems arise to ensure they are delivering the best product....or at least saying they will deliver it and then wait a year

There is no V2, they are constantly making improvements to the design as issues & improvements are found. It is still very much a first edition product.

I don't believe this is the case. The back-ends were changed to have a continuous metal band which prevents it from separating. There has been one mention of them shortening the body which was causing a poor electrical connection.

May Update

Hello Everyone,

We’ve concluded an eventful month with much work completed. We had some hiccups, but still maintained a record rate of shipping. Below we’ll cover what was accomplished in May, the shipping numbers, and where we stand on order delivery.

In May we made the transition to a new Charger control board. Feedback from customers told us we needed a more reliable charger and so we set about making the switch. By switching to a more powerful microcontroller, we cut the number of electrical components by half. This came with it’s own set of challenges in software upgrades and testing. A three month development, design and testing phase concluded in Mid May. With everything set we started production of the new design. An immediate problem with board manufacturing led to a few hundred having to be scrapped and a two week delay in production. Things were back running smoothly again on May 24th.

Although we lost about half of the available shipping time in May, we still shipped 1600 units out. This is about 85% of what we planned to get to in May. Looking into June, we will need to make up a little time. If by mid June it does not look like we will fulfill all the estimated orders, we will adjust the shipping estimates in order to keep everyone informed. The orders are clearing fast and we are excited to be doing this much shipping.

As always, we thank each and every one of you for your patience and support. We are looking at a smooth month in June without any major changes. We look forward to getting your Hopper shipped to you shortly.

THIS MAKES ME SO EXCITED! :-)

The more reliable charger makes me glad that I will benefit but I am thinking that many who have
already received wont be so happy.

Yeah, I don't think I would be so bummed knowing that I have a warranty that is good for that.

However, that is some of the benefits of waiting a bit on a product that is a brand new.

Same thing happens with a lot of vapes that are brand new :-).

Man, I just got the email myself. Makes me super excited.

"In May we made the transition to a new Charger control board. Feedback from customers told us we needed a more reliable charger and so we set about making the switch."

I posted my theory way back on Christmas Day that there may have been some bad chargers causing issues with Grasshoppers. How ironic would that be if the majority of the time it wasn't the actual vaporizer having reliability issues, but the charger causing the Grasshopper to malfunction? Either way I'm glad I have a Nitecore D2 waiting for the day I eventually get my Ti GH.

I think there might be more risk with using their charger than screwing/unscrewing. It's all anecdotal, but posts in this thread indicate less failure when using a third party charger.

It makes sense, the third party chargers have proven reliability versus a brand new custom fabricated charger.

I will most likely be ordering a third party charger when my Grasshopper preorder (Sept. 2015) ships. Probably the Nitecore D2.

I should have been more clear. I don't think the OEM charger is inherently bad. I just think there may be an issue with defective chargers or the charging mechanism itself in the pen. I'm sure the OEM charger is designed just fine, but manufacturing defects could cause failures, which in turn might be the source of some of the issues we have seen. Again, just speculation on my part.

VapoShop (Netherlands) appears to now have stock (again) in both SS and TI Grasshoppers https://www.vaposhop.com/vaporizers/portable_vaporizers/grasshopper-vaporizer/

I ordered last Thursday and do not yet have confirmation of shipment. Perhaps there were a lot of folks trying to order more than one unit and VapoShop has now found that they have a few more for sale? Dunno...but if you were remorseful to have missed it last week....time to jump.

Same. The confirmation email said it would be shipped out in one business day, but nothing yet. Hopefully we get an email today.

Thanks for the heads up @jabba!

I just ordered a stainless steel. I went back and forth last time Vaposhop had them. I finally decided to order it right after it sold out. I had checked on it a couple hours previous and they were still in stock. I'm still kicking myself over that one. I considered verdampftnochmal.de but I wasn't sure if they were authorized resellers or not and I wanted to make sure I got my warranty.

I knew I would want a backup eventually. I kind of wish I had added a SS to my Ti order back when I had the chance. This was basically my only chance to have a backup for several months. Based on our new knowledge, even under the best conditions I don't think you will be able to buy a Grasshopper and have it immediately ship until at least September, and that's being generous.

I am looking forward to testing the SS and Ti side by side when I finally get my Ti. In fact I have a brand new claisen/y adapter, I'm definitely going to do some double GH hits in my D020-D.

Edit: Don't forget to use the voucher code VAPOBUST. To enter the code click on the blue link to the left of the total when you check out.

Just checking in case I missed this issue..

Recently I noticed my gh appears to not be heating until I reach temp 3.1. I don't get any heat below that, and the hopper turns off. Like the breath sensor is not picking up the airflow.

The red light turns blue very quickly too like in a second after clicking.

After temp 3.1 everything turns to normal operation.

I also had a very minor bit of combustion, tasted smoke and I stopped, this weekend, but I attributed that to really sticky green and way too tight of a pack.

Due to some extra steps for us (customs paperwork etc) we're facing a slight delay in shipping GH orders to the US, but all of these will go out tomorrow morning! Confirmation and tracking will be sent by email.
