Discontinued The Grasshopper

5+ weeks daily driver, Vapefiend SS hopper working great. Starting to get excited again for my Ti preorder. Thinking I might have to get one of those adapters so I can hit both GH's through glass at the same time :rockon:If someone remembers what the glass piece is called or can link to one... I think it's like a kaisen adapter or something?

Started using my Mighty again after neglecting it during my honeymoon with the hopper. Still glad I have both they compliment each other very well. Feeling spoiled!

They usually have them as called Cloud Buddy on the VXC website but i didn't see them when i looked.

Anything you can learn from is cool by me even if the presentation seems biased. Hadn't thought of using a 10mm male but the critic shows you don't need a 14 female. OK that wasn't much...Still, he did review the features which for those not blessed yet with hands on experience, would prove useful. And hey, since the overall review was so negative (except through water) maybe he'll convince folks to cancel their orders so I can move up in line? ;)

This Vape Critic dude has looked at the GH from completely the wrong angle. It is NOT a session vape, if you try to use it as such then of course it will get hot and uncomfortable.

He doesn't get the form factor or why it looks like a pen - well that's a bit obvious for anyone with a modicum of intelligence surely? from shirt pocket, hit clicker wait for heat up and hit it all in under 10-15 seconds from start to finish - it's called STEALTH!

No real mention of it being pure convection and the benefits of that to efficiency and flavour either. My use of flower has reduced considerably using the hopper over other conduction or conduction/convection vapes. So much so that my volume of flower consumed has reduced by at least 30%. I can vape 3 bowls every evening and 2.1-2.2g of ground herb will last a full week.

Zero mention of the lifetime warranty either which is a massive plus. When you factor that in it becomes an extremely viable proposition and investment and he has approached this review from completely the wrong angle.

Of course it's all subjective and he is entitled to his opinion but for me, the positives far outweigh any negatives with the GH.

+1, he looks so bored to do this review, it's really weird ....

I heard that vapecritic was a shill who was paid to market kandypen or some shit, correct me if I'm wrong
I haven't heard that, and have relied on him as one of my go-to reviewers for quite some time (along with Buzz).

I have to say I was a little surprised by his review. I just went to his site and watched the Astral review. I think that's a good review comparison and demonstrates some of his inconsistency in these 2 reviews.

For example, in his gh review, he didn't mention its price point value or lifetime warranty. The gh is a LITTLE more expensive than the Astral, but still unbelievable bang for the buck. I think he missed it there.

And I don't think he was clear about how he tested the gh. For example, how much time, if any, he waited between draws. And if he tried adjusting his lip placement on the mouthpiece.

Having said all that, I still can't wait to get my gh!

Similarly unimpressed with the VapeCritics views, it seemed to sway from his usual standard.
I realised I'm probably as biased towards the GH as he is against it - to which I find it almost amusing how much bias he let seep into his 'review'.
Despite any content being 'cool' as mentioned, this was a fantastic overview, and not actually a good review in my mind. But at least he represents his ideas as crazy and as a predicted minority.
And he does go to a decent depth.

A couple of points:

The notches are perfectly fine for temperature fidelity in my experience. It represents a 90° segment (a quarter of the device), and covers an 80°C range. Of course it's tailored to cannabis use, but I've had the most success vaping low temp alternative herbs with it over my other vapes (MFLB, EQ).

Gripes with the silicone mouthpiece are real, but his solution to use it without it is not properly air tight and will scratch the Ti (although it's very hard to see).
This lack of ingenuity results in lesser performance through glass, not by a lot, but I find it noticeable (you can see the difference in a piece due to cloud density discrepancy).

You can use the device natively, easily - at least from a cold start (even if you are super sensitive).
However, it is able to be drastically improved with an accessory (silicone MP, glass stem, right through to waterpipe).
User tolerance to heat and intended usage patterns will dictate the appropriate add-on.
Fair enough, as the device comes in the box it won't be ideal for everyone's usage (neither was my EQ, by a significant margin. With the GH, it's very minor comparatively), I feel this should be mentioned in his review, at least over his personal gripes with colour.
(I definitely want my stealth pen vape to be silver, I guess if you forget about such an important aspect, wanting a generic black look could be tempting).

For the record, out of the box it is a one-hitter (as promoted by the creators).
If you want to session it, or use it in some other fashion, there are millions of ways to do this. Many at no expense. (a basic garden-hose PET bottle bong would be free for eg.)

In terms of battery use. If you can do 12 bong hits in less than 45 minutes, you need to spend an additional $7, and 10 seconds to swap it when needed.
But keep in mind this consumption is enough to forget those 45 minutes ever happened, so...
Battery life isn't that bad.

I heard that vapecritic was a shill who was paid to market kandypen or some shit, correct me if I'm wrong
Noticeable difference in quality compared to his reviews from brands where you can expect a marketer to be pushing it, due to the distinct lack of quality of the device.
My takeaway from his GH review is:
even though he states outright "I hate this vape", and brings some subtle sass from having to wait for it;
He still mentions a lot of things that I love about this vape.
But it does feel like if Hopper Labs got those devices to him early, he would be all praise.

Also, I want to know the other devices in his portable vape-bong Top 3

EDIT: shout out to @jamesuk9 for bringing up even more flaws than I noticed, the benefits of convection are worth a mention. Also: value.

I just watched Vape Critics review. I always take his reviews with a grain of salt just because I take everyone's reviews with a grain of salt. I feel like reviews help steer me, but I have learned that in no way should I trust one person's opinion but rather a collective mind of opinions (such as FC). When the Cloud first came out, FC was going nuts, and even with its growing pains, it's still the best vape I have ever used (still using my cloud evo).

That being said, cutting through his bias, how hot really is the vapor? Let's say I'm going out to bar with a friend, can we reasonably take a bunch of hits outside with it quickly? Or will it actually get too hot? Or is a better tack to take a LARGE hit and be one and done.

I do have my titanium on order, and I'm no stranger to hot vapor, as my pax at high temperature got pretty hot at times. How is it compared to that? A bit hotter?

Anyhow, still can't wait to get mine :-)

@newVaper420 The Ti hopper cools quicker than the SS, at temp 3-4 mark I can hit repeatedly with 5-10 seconds in between and do a bowl in 3-5 biggish hits without too much trouble. The silicone tip helps for sure.

The key is to toggle the on/off clicker between hits by turning off a second or two before you finish the inhale.

Yes it gets hotter than most but not to the point that your gonna suffer burns.

It is however more suited to glass and water filtration for sure. Nothing I've tried gets anywhere near how effectively you can milk a bong in portable form.

Now is there a portable bong :-)

I use Vapefiends Budgie bubbler or micro bomb regularly when out and about. Only cost £29, work really effectively and fit in my pockets without too much trouble.

I just carry or buy a small bottle of mineral water to fill it with when needed.

How do you carry those things around? Especially in the summer. LOL sorry for being off topic.

On-Topic

In any event, I still think it's a pretty amazing device, and with most of FC raving it, I'll take your guys word over one man's opinion. I also believe Buzz reviewed it favorably.

Isn't the Dark Grey closer to black, why didn't he get one of those?

Vape Critic really disappointed me with his incredibly biased review on this one. It shows so much.

for cool sake just buy one MagicFlightLaunchBox glass mouthpiece. it is cheap and it fits that silicone condom perfectly. when hits are done you can take that glass piece out (or leave it in condom) and put together in one pocket with Hopper. that is one thick glass and wont brake easily. even less trouble if you gonna use some kind of carrying case for ya Hopper, herb and accessories.

It's an obsession but it's pleasin'
I've enjoyed VapeCritic's reviews in the past, but this one was strange. During the first few minutes I thought maybe he had been hitting the GH before he started recording. Then I got the impression that he was really reveling in how much he disliked it and how "contrary" he was being to the general consensus. He was so unrelenting that at one point I thought he was trolling and was going to eventually say "Just kidding, this thing rocks." Anyway, he seemed pretty intent on not recognizing the device's strong points and instead focusing on whatever drawbacks he could find. And he is certainly entitled to his opinions, but complaining about there being a clip on a device that is DESIGNED to pass for a pen?

Finally, it occurred to me that if they ever make a movie of this guy's life, they have GOT to get Zachary Quinto to play the lead.

Observations of heat from people that aren't me:

Initially, comments were made well into its first sesh, about how the device was quite hot.
With 3 people hitting in quick succession, after a chamber each, the entire device at this stage, in a warm unventilated room, was hot enough to suggest sitting it down would be a good idea. (It cooled down in a matter of minutes).
I only had a single battery then, so charging between usage and keeping the thermal mass uniform throughout a sesh limits its cooling potential. (swapping batteries helps cool it down, the whole thing heat-sinks [hence a lot of 'hot' backends])
I make everyone use the device directly for their first go, so they can taste the flavour (most impressive when showing smoking growers their real yield potential).

Only once my heat sensor was malfunctioning did people start actively noticing (and mentioning) the heat.

I posted it today for warranty service, so in a few weeks I can calibrate my usage observations back to that of a normal device.

So far though, my observations:

I've only used my hopper directly, properly, once.
I took it across state, and forgot my glass reducer for my D020. So I didn't have much choice.
With choice, I am a shameless bong fiend.
I still got hella high without my trusty glass, however it was much less enjoyable during use.

In the car (or anywhere stationary I suppose) it was a bit annoying.
However I hiked it here:
13z8vfd.jpg

Hitting it and watching the world go by, sublime.
Again, it's always more pleasant if you cool the vapour in some way.
But, in situations where you don't want to carry extra crap around, it is fine.

My only gripes with the GH (apart from having to send it back) are;
  • The silicone MP (personal, I don't like the finite nature of it [EQ whip hangover]),
  • The sound it makes when it is being used (air intake holes could be better),
  • The amount of threading on the back-end (feels like too much travel, esp. when compared to front end) and;
  • The biggest - not being able to see or feel the temp. notches in bad light.
Personally I find these to be very minor downsides and I look forward to a positive future with my hopper.

EDIT:
Anyone with both SS/Ti able to comment on air intake sound between the two?
SS being easier to machine might be quieter?

Edit: Oh yeah one other question. I numbered my batteries with a sharpee, but the ink fades really quickly probably due to the heat. Anyone know of a better marker for this purpose?

Just number your batteries with sharpie like normal then put a small piece of clear packing tape over the top of the ink. This will prevent it from being rubbed off. It's the oils on your skin that causes it to rub off so fast.

maybe vpae critic is pissed off because he had to wait for his ghand also paid for it...but who knows sometimes I have the opinion that he is getting paid or at least gifted... but that is all speculation

and everybpdy has a different taste...

I hope I will get my gh very soon and can comment on it..

the heat issue is nothing new to me... I am planning to use the gh with a bubbler... and when on the go with mflb glass stem or lotus vaporizer pipe... anyone have experience with one of those? does it cool the vapor so you can hit it comfortable?

and regarding hotness of vapor which other portable is compareable...

I meant to reply to @Lahey before RE: battery identifying.
I think tape would make the battery stick in the hopper, there's pretty small tolerance.

I just used a sharpie, and put a small dot on each battery, 1 - 5 dots.
On the positive side of the battery is an indenture which can protect the ink.
