I think maybe you've missed the point? Just why is it you think you've never been caught with a dead Solo and no place to charge it? Don't you think your foresight here has protected you from that? To old Murphy such backup is like a cross to a vampire.

"Mighty handy" some might say........

Effective insurance, 'well done, you!'.

Because I get several goes off the one charge? Or because I don't go camping out in the wilderness for days and nights on end with no power?

It's been a really long time since I've last been in this thread. I have not kept up with all the accessories but what are the best bubblers and accessories needed to have everything working. My bday is coming up and wanted to get myself a gift. Thanks in advance.

Got my replacement battery for my silver Solo yesterday. Had ordered a 3400 mAh, but they sent me a 4400 mAh. Oh well I'll have to live with the extra long usage times between charging. Charged all the way to the top for the first time.
Took longer than usual to charge. When I used it last night the indicator lights stayed at 7 for a loooong time before dropping down in a more familiar fashion.
I will try to remember to make a count of the total number of sessions with this new battery tonight. This will definitely be the Solo that goes with me when away from home.

I prefer a plastic mouthpiece over glass. For that reason, I use the Air mouthpiece mostly for both Solo and Air. But you can jerry-rig your Solo mouthpieces with a plastic tip from an o.pen-style cartridge. Mine fits very snugly. Notice my anti-roll-cable-tie.

Hey guys i was taking apart one of my solos today and found this im thinking this is normal ? Just some kind of cement to hold the wires in place on the oven ?
A type of furnace cement, yes. If you search "furnace cement" and click "this thread only" you should see some other posts from @OF. It's supposed to be there to hold the wires (power and heat sensors iirc?) in place. Way back somewhere in the thread there have been a few Solos that failed at that point (where the cables detached there and it wouldn't heat properly). Resist the urge to pick at it.

thanks Quetzalcoatl , this was my first solo i think i got it back around 2011 ,2012 . i just took apart my newer one bought about a year ago and it doesnt have this any idea why my new one wouldnt have it ?

Design change. Part of the ever evolving cost control process that hopefully keeps our prices down, a generally good idea?

Over a wide enough range you'll find an even bigger change in how it's attached. Originally there was a small PCB under the furnace but attached to it. Cables from the main unit plugged into it and the heater and sensor leads soldered to it. You could exchange the heater assembly with a screwdriver. Now there's no connectors, soldering is necessary.

Now the (longer) leads solder into the main PCB (like most vapes), service without soldering is no longer possible. But the Solo is more 'cost effective' to make. Same with removing 'true PA' and replacing with 'use while charging', a cost savings for what is hoped is a minor concession.

Trump brings this up in his book (which I was reading yesterday in fact). He talks about removing one of the hinges from the doors in a new building. Saves maybe $10, but if you have 2,000 doors in the building you've just made $20,000 profit with a single decision.......

thanks OF , there is a couple screws under the furnace you can make one out in my pic . my newer model didnt have these i noticed when i had it apart .i guess this must be one of the original serviceable without soldering models ? it does work with the power adapter too .

You're welcome, glad to help when I can.

I believe you're right. Two screws holding the board in from below is what I remember. I think the main board is the same, the leads are just longer and solder in where the cables used to connect. Newer ones have only two heavy red and black wires:

It makes it a bit more complex to work on, but it does cut a lot of hand assembly out of the final unit. "Cost effective" as they say. Job security to Engineers sometimes. Survival for companies.

So to carry on my quest for portable charging I've had an idea. Why not use a car battery jump starter kit?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00WRALWT4

13600 mAh, can use it charge my Solo, any other electrical devices (phones etc) and even to jump start my car!

@OF (maybe this is of interest)

That should work, subject to the right cables? However, I don't think it's the best option. Please hold off for a bit the last piece of the proposal I'm working on (exactly that, cabling.....) is due today. I should have a complete recommendation soon, the major part is working fine as of yesterday, one detail left.

Hey, what's with the diminutive text? Aren't I as important as other people? Aside from trying to help others out I've no real interest here. I have my solution, right? That's my remote recharge battery pack in front of the rest of the 'travel kit':

I'm trying to find a useful setup for guys who can't solder or have the other skills/understanding needed. I don't really need to spend my money on gear to test out before recommending to others, especially gear I don't really need personally.

Well, as I can tell it has a 12v output similar to one found in a car, so I would imagine using the Solo car charging adapter it would work perfectly fine? (I could be wrong though, and maybe the "car jack" cable with it is for something else)

I will hold out though, looking forward to what you have in store!

Er, no? Not at all. Maybe you read into the use of the small text too much (no pun intended). I simply put it there to make sure you get a notification as I didn't quote your text or anything. In fact I'd say it was quite the opposite in that I wanted you to see the post, nothing to do with your importance! And I'm not knocking your solutions, just simply adding to the options. You have been a great help to me. (And many others I am sure.) Maybe I just thought it would look neater. No offence intended :)

Thanks. Liking a post would also notify me of activity, even if I didn't check out every post posted to this and a couple other threads I follow. Quoting (editing out the unimportant parts as the rules say) is, of course, ideal. Several 'sub discussions' can happen all at the same time between periods of silence. Funny how that works out. To tell an embarrassing story, I missed that tiny text the first time since it's just like the similar 'housekeeping' text that surrounds the important part. I went back to 'alerts' to be sure I had the right post where I was mentioned.....saw it then. I don't want to ignore such things, they're usually connected to folks with issues/problems. When you're mentioned it's not always because you're a fine fellow, sometimes someone needs assistance. Not good to let such a call go unanswered.

Just took me as strange, and still does. You had to make an extra effort to do this. I've only been around a few years (and of course frequent only a fraction of the threads), but AFAIK this is the first time it's happened on FC? For sure the first to me.

Anyway, I have what I think is a better solution. The best I can devise from easy to obtain parts (from Amazon completely I hope), reasonable in cost (about half that above) and complete with professionally made, quality cables and connectors. A complete system you can order and use with some confidence. I've got it, but the connector I'm using has been known to fail with some users from the earlier 'PA exercises'. I never had troubles with them, but Pipes did. Some people are tougher on gear than others. So I'm looking for something more reliable.

Cheap, simple, reliable and easily available are my goals for others here. I hope/expect that to be complete as soon as I confirm the adapter coming today (Sunday no less.....) is indeed the same one I tested. I'm down to sourcing the last part. I have a better one my 'connector collection' but need to confirm the source of new parts that fit and function and are of reasonable quality. And tested to work appropriately for the duty it will be put to in the real world. Our friends here deserve no less.

Sometime today I hope. Unless the garden needs supervising.....or lunch comes up. Or I take a nap...

Regards to all.

Well I'm still not sure why I did it myself (or I can't think of the words to explain), sorry for any misunderstanding! I didn't think much of it when doing.

Anyway!... I look forward to your solution. I don't mind soldering or anything, but would be great have a more simple solution as I don't have a soldering iron where I am living currently. (I actually was looking for the CCTV connector that you linked earlier in the thread, but I couldn't find any with a suitable 4mm x 1.7mm size).

Cool. No harm, no foul as they say? Just strange.....a guy could grow old waiting for it again......

That's 'cuz they don't exist. Solder only and they're pretty rare. Wouldn't know where to suggest there. DigiKey carries them here (where I got mine back when). That connector exists solely for that industry. They use it, along with coax for the video, for camera hook ups using bulk cables off spools with connectors added after the fact. Like normal wiring to the bedroom instead of a commercial extension cord. They only like that one connector......some blathering on about standard if you can believe. Where's the fun in that?

You need an adapter to get there. Standby for the big announcement.......

Speaking of which, the connectors got here. They are very similar, but not exactly what I tested with before. I think it's no big deal. The molded jacket is a different shape and marked "G" (probably part of some set?), and the center connector seems a bit better if anything. To be sure I'm going to give it a quick test before finding the camera, taking a photo or two more, and trying to put one subject and one predicate in each and every sentence....and enough verbs to make the reading fun?

Time to go make cookies while Mister Solo charges.

Gentle Friends,

Here's my suggestion for a battery pack to recharge your Solo 'in the field'. It's based on the power packs the fancy LED lighting guys use for portable gigs. This particular version will also recharge Air and similar stuff through it's USB port, like a standard 'power bank':
0uXrGDG.jpg

The thing in the lower right corner is the charger for it (special, don't loose it, it's not a normal 12 Volt 'wall wart'). It's 100 to 240 VAC so all you might need is a mechanical adapter for the socket? You'd plug it's connector into the female connector on the cable above it. In use (recharging the Solo) you don't have it plugged in of course. Although you could have if you want, 'charge while using' is not a sin here (unlike with Solo itself). The charger and cable come with the battery pack.

Buying from Amazon you have choices WRT capacity. I got the 6000 mAh version, the middle one:
http://www.amazon.com/TalentCell-Re...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
However, you can also get a 'half capacity' version:
http://www.amazon.com/Talentcell-Lithium-Amplifier-Multi-led-indicator/dp/B00MHNQIR2/ref=pd_sim_469_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41iu9oLr13L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=1WEQQ4EEKEZWA8BQ1ANN
Or a 'twice as big' version (and even one between that and the one I got.....):
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01337QXMA/ref=twister_B01337QQHM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

"Under the hood" (or bonnet for the Brits?) this is what you find:

Notice there are really 3 pairs of (protected) 18650s in series inside to make the '12 Volts'. The half size would be 3 single cells in series for the same 12 Volt battery. The twice capacity would have 3 series groups of 4 in parallel, the intermediate 3 to a set. I opted to the 'pairs at a time' configuration since a single cell failure generally doesn't kill the pack (only reduces capacity), unlike the cheaper one. Your call there. Nothing much else inside, I got a version with a USB output (they don't all) so I could use it for other things (like Air.....).

Which brings us to adapters. We have to get from the Industry Standard for 12VDC (as on the battery pack) to the 'oddball' size Arizer used, and in fact is using outside it's approved voltage range! What we're doing here drives the 'alphabet soup' guys nuts. Love it. As I see it we have options here

We also need to deal with the connector issue, there are a couple of options here I think:
kQWQSpi.jpg

Both can also be ordered from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Female...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
http://www.amazon.com/Super-Power-Supply®-5-5x2-1mm-4-8x1-7mm/dp/B00EA4Q60K/ref=pd_bxgy_147_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=12DV8XMMCZ88Y2QA30FY

There are other, sources and similar products of course, but those two I've checked out/tested/used. The longer one is more frail. Pipes reports failures. Although I personally haven't seen one, I have no doubt they could be easily killed. I therefore recommend the smaller version. For very little money more you can have more than you'll ever need or really want. Give some to friends, stash emergency ones around, tape one to the battery pack 'just in case' and you'll still have a few to hang on the Christmas tree....

And, of course, there's the USB port. With the right cable you can recharge Air, FMs, e-cig stuff, phones, MP3 players and all that fun stuff.

A complete charge takes 'overnight', it's a big battery. That charger is important, don't substitute, a mistake here could overload the protection in one or more of the cells killing it, or not completely charge on the other end. I got 4 full recharges, with a bit left. I expect the smaller one would give at least one to anyone, and two to those of us who don't run the Solo until it drops dead making vapor before recharging.

So, there you go. Hits my personal 'gates'. Useful, dependable (I hope......), 'no tools needed', easy to order all the parts (from one place in this case) and under fifty dollars (again, a personal goal).

OK, the Solo is charged again. I've been using two in rotation. Do you realize how hard it is to discharge a Solo just so you can charge it up again? That's a lot of stems, friends and neighbors, lots of stems......

Regards and Sunday best wishes to all. I hope this helps (or at least amuses) you on your journey to the ultimate vape and true enlightenment. See you there.

If these GonGs turn out to work well it will save all of us a lot of money on glass. Check to see how they fit and the size of the holes. I see it fits 14 to 18mm size.

Solo did well this weekend. My battery is holding up well after over 2 years. The tips about how we treat our battery has helped. Never let it get too low and don't charge up too high. Take it off the charge before the green light stops blinking.
