Ploom Anyone heard of this thing? Is it an e-cig, vaporizer or what?

I saw a mention of this on an e-cig forum and it is a bit perplexing.

It appears to be an e-cig that uses butane. It uses little pods that "I think" contain actual tobacco with some PG or VG like they use in e-cig liquids. Of course they say you have to buy their pods... no mention of re-filling them with your own materials but.... Curious minds want to know.

Anyone heard of this thing??

Seems to be a cross between an iolite (catalyst system) and a standard e-cig. Seems likely to have problems and be expensive. Can't even tell what the price is. Click on 'on-line store' and the link is just a loop. :rolleyes:

I got a ploom today. It sucks! Hot to hold, hardly any vapor, time to see what I can get it to do by using it outside the manufacturer's instructions :D

Can it be modded to vaporize a small mesh "cage" with dry, powdered "baccy". Ahem.

Or will it only vaporize/atomize liquid solutions.:(

Possibly. I have a second one on the way, but everybody with them on ECF is saying how they produce almost no vapor.

If you do not use the pods, almost all of what is produced comes out of the massive air inlet channels in the mouthpiece. Using the pods, the airflow is just not right. What this thing needs is a custom mouthpeice to close the heat chamber a bit BUT it is not sealed from the butane heating area and exhaust does come into the heat chamber. So restricting the airflow is likely to mean you pull exhaust into your lungs :uhoh:

Maybe someone will come out with a similar version for MJ users that with be a reasonably priced competitor to the Iolite. seeing this for $40 reminds me of why I didn't jump on the Iolite bandwagon. For some reason people think that they should price gouge MJ users with their paraphernalia, the vape pen is another example.

I think you are right, if you look at the cost of Portasol soldering irons (same manufacturer as the iolite) they are around 25% of the RRP of the iolite. Even if you account for the more expensive materials used in the casing and the carry pouch etc, it should be around 50% of the cost.

Then again, the market for vapes has to be a tiny fraction of the market size for gas tools which you can get in every hardware and car accessory store. Everything specialist has a premium. I am very happy with my IO and use it all day every day.

The fact that the ploom does not have a sealed herb chamber makes me suspect that the quality of the unit overall is far inferior. I may be wrong, but I don't trust that it isn't letting carbon monoxide into your airways. It might be a dead product anyway now that USA have the PACT act and they intend to sell online.

But it is good news for vape products in general, a move in a direction that I hope we all get to benefit from.
Lets hope an affordable, small portable vape with an adjustable temperature control comes out. The ploom came so close!

I saw that the Ploom thread got thrown in ABV archive, even though the last post was just a few days ago. Actually there are lots of posts archived even though they just were updated recently.

Anyway, I wanted to know what the OP thought of it. I asked the company about it, and they said it is fixed temp at 325'F. I guess that is ideal for tobacco pods. Also, I don't see how you could load it with anything other than those little aluminum pods of tobacco sealed with foil. ANd I don't see anyone re-loading those pods.

On the other hand, as a non-combusing vaporizer, I don't see why the thread was archived. I'd be interested in hearing more about it and its merits. Is everyone here only interested in vaporizing cannabis?

The Ploom has been tested by many in the e-cig vaping world. I've not seen ANY good reports! A few okay but...type reports.

I don't miss tobacco at all. I use an e-cig mod and as of next month will have been off tobacco for a year. The Iolite will vape dry tobacco or shisha or even the e-cig nicotine liquids.

I must admit I had high hopes for the Ploom but.... I think they missed the mark.

If you want e-cig info there are quite a few forums- http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com is probably the best. They're not going to discuss cannabis vapes and we're not going to devote serious discussion to e-cigs. If you want to disagree with the way this forum is run, feel free to send an email to vtac, but don't complain about it in your posts.

Have you (been able to) tweak the temp on the Ploom? Say, to 365F? There may be a little adjustment screw which may allow you to push it (even if just barely) past thier set temp of 325F.

PLUK if you can, frogbmth!

I do like the small form factor. And the build speaks beyond novice DIY, a pleasing design.
