I've gone past the edit time so sorry for back to back posts.

I've been trying to upload a vid all day. Too big for Vimeo and after creating a YouTube account it just keeps on saying "error uploading" with no explanation!

just saying I haven't forgotten. I'm gonna keep trying.

Just so Dab HAppy!
So I received a GONG style Gnockoff to test yesterday and I am having no luck with it. I tried following the method in this video as I have the GONG attached to my bong in lieu of the D020 shown in this video.
It seems I cannot get enough heat or something. I am using a Bernzomatic micro handheld torch like the one @Stu is using in his video posted above. I have tried heating for up to 60 seconds or more probably before and while trying to draw with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestion or advice?

For now, I will go back to youtube and do some research but your advice is greatly appreciated!

Maybe you just aren't heating it enough  Are you heating it until you see the flame on the surface of the glass turn orange on the whole area you're trying to heat? like in that^^ video... That's how I was told to gauge it, and I always found it to work pretty well.. I never heated the male joint though, but if I did it would be Very little, just enough to warm it up a tiny bit and give the vapor a running start.

I was thinking heat is my problem. And oddly enough I just found this video which explained the orange coloration around 3:55 which I was wondering if there was some sort of way to know so this is good to know.

I also was using unground bud. Should I only use ground material in the Gnockoff?

so I've still had no luck uploading my video! there's a few tips i can give to get the gn0ckoff working properly. Just bear in mind the one I've been seasoning is the same as the one I sent you @nosmoking and I've just started to get the results I want. So it can be done!

your pack. I found a medium pack and grind seem best. use the little tool I sent to pack down the herb and try to get an even pack, IE no air gaps round the side.

As I mentioned (and you would've been able to see if i could get this bastard video uploaded) I ended up using two torches as getting enough heat into the tube was a bit problematic for me too. even using two torches i only got VERY charred herb but no actual cherry was lit.

draw speed. slower draw = hotter air.

I'm very keen for all feedback etc to be open in the thread. remember this isnt my design and I am just trying to emulate the original even though I've never seen one. I'll say again if anyone has an original and a set of calipers the wall thickness of the glass would be interesting as it's the only variable I think could be different. other than that I think we're good.

I'll just iterate this. This vape seems to be a very difficult beast to tame. it's a little wasteful, fragile, dangerous (yes a shop mate tried to pull my first one like a slide, ouch!) and has a learning curve for sure. BUT...... the flavour. OH THE FLAVOR.

THanks

e2a. whole nug works but maybe get used to ground material first. MY VID IS UPLOADING! FIngers crossed coming soon......

NOW IN HD!!!! ALSO I'm happy for all discussion to happen in this thread. this isn't MY vape it's OUR gn0ck0ff. So lets work together to make us all happy :) I'm def keeping this in my line up :)

So grinding may help. More heat and getting the flame to turn orange. I was all over the place with the lighter last night as I had no clue what I was doing. Also, I was concerned my draw speed through the bong was a little fast so I did try some slower pulls but by that time I was already starting to give up on the Gnockoff for the night so I could stop fooling around and get medicated.

I know it will work like the Daisy easily enough but this is not how it is intended and does not seem like a good idea because then you have absolutely nowhere to grab the heating tube.

I will play with it more this weekend. I think I have some tips that may get me going here, and if you get that video up I am sure it will help more. I have a smaller torch that I can try to heat this thing with at the same time to get to torches on it. I will post back as soon as I get some more testing done!

I've always used chunks w/ the Gn0me GonG successfully.. If it's not working well, maybe there is a difference in mass and or surface area between the Gn0me and the Gnockoff  I know if you're looking into the Gn0me GonG the spikes are pretty tightly clustered to each other, both horizontally and vertically (if that makes sense), but looking at the pictures, your's definitely seem to be more spread out vertically.. A tighter cluster kept close to the female joint would probably help, I'd think..

Here's the pics again in one spot...

I noticed the same thing when watching the other videos and was wondering if this would help much. I still think I was not heating it correctly in my case as you mentioned @davesmith got his to work very well!

Yep you may be right @Buildozer I think I need a pointier reamer (the tool for making the indents). it's feedback like that which will help get this nailed. The design of this tool clearly took some time and without an original in my hand it's difficult to create an exact copy. I just want to point out that mine are still 'beta' clones, including @nosmoking 's, and although they still function (I made sure of this as you can see in the video) their usage may incur a different set of variables. Hence the need for moar firepower. This is a learning experience for us all!

It was interesting seeing the vid of the dry version. I hadn't seen that before. I actually added an extra set of indents as when in e shop using my glass torch to heat up the tube I thought more indents would be better (the flames width) but seeing the dry version with only a couple of rows seems this wasn't necessary.

Anyway onwards and upwards, I will report after further testing! Thanks!

Ps I may try a 10mm version and I'm working on an all glass 'peace' style conduction vape too. Shhhhh

I have had more luck with my testing over the extended weekend (had yesterday off) and I can get good cloudy results now pretty easily with one big torch. I just give it more time to heat up and I put my torch on a stand next to the Gnome attached to my bong. This allows me to slowly spin the Gnome while it is already attached on my bong to spread the heat around more. It takes a good 60-90 second preheat I think and I use a fine grind but I can get 2 really tasty hits this way. The first hit is cloudy like in davesmiths video and the second is lighter but still a hell of a cloud. There does not seem to be much if any conduction being spread to the male2male glass bowl.

I think much more testing needs to be done on my part, but I feel like the downside is the heat time right now. I am wondering how much of a difference the points made by @Buildozer would make. I think closer indents and I only think the indents space should be about 1/2-3/4" as I am only using that much of the indented space. I apply heat to the entire space that is indented, however I only concentrate heat at the lowest 1/2" or 3/4" of the indented space.

The glass itself seems to retain heat well. The top of the heating chamber is cool enough to grab at any time even during heating but the indented area seems to take a long time to cool down (which is great for trying to get multiple hits).

I will keep on testing, however supply is low for the next few days so I may not have much to add here until next week.

Hi @davesmith

Really interested in this too.

I've been reading the vapocane and Gn0me thread. I was set on a vapocane but then saw everyone raving about the gn0me so thought Yeah I'll try that, then the guy disappears.

So looking forward to watching this one process as sort of a community project.

Just my 2p, do you think narrowing the end of intake (like the vapocane) might help increase the temperature as it'll slow the draw down?

Edit: Or maybe you could narrow and twist it to create a vortex which would keep the air inside the heating chamber for longer... Hmm cogs are a turning now...

I feel like I should apologize for not coming back in this thread for so long. In the past two weeks I have been able to get to know my Gnockoff much better and I am getting great results just like in the video that @davesmith posted. I get big clean and tasty clouds.

So here is my current method:
I use two torches, one from each side and I torch only the lower half of the indent cluster. I have the Gnockoff already loaded and set on my bong with the torches on stands beside the bong so I don't have to hold them. Now that I am getting the heat time down to 30 seconds with 2 torches I am finding that I don't use the torch stands as often. I will just hold the two torches for the 30 seconds and then I put one down/ turn one off and while still heating with the other torch I pickup my bong and take a slow rip. The bong will start fogging almost instantly and this is when I typically put the torch down but I keep it going. After a full hit I will take a brief pause and go for a second hit. Sometimes I need the torch towards the end of my second hit, sometimes not. I find I can get about 2-3 big hits per load but I am only loading a little more than half of the loading chamber and tamping it down to make it look like only a 1/3 of the heat chamber is loaded. The odd thing is the herb looks like it is more extracted on the top when you go to inspect it and it appears as if there would be green underneath but I find as I start scraping the herb out layer by layer that it is all evenly cooked except maybe the last bit around the screen.

Overall I really like this thing and I think if I didn't have my current Supreme 3 obsession I would use it a hell of a lot more. I do like the suggestions above by @St0fxxx and I may have some myself but I still think more testing is needed to be done. I have only been using medium to finely ground and I really want to be able to do just chunks so more practice is needed to get to this point I think.

Thanks @nosmoking that's made me happy that your getting better results. Sorrry for the lack of posts from me too! I'm actually on holiday for the next two weeks but I'll try get an update after that!

@davesmith I am getting even better results the more I play with this thing. I now have a completely different method that works so much faster and better. I use only one torch and heat in a linear motion from top to bottom of the dimpled glass for about 20 seconds. I don't spin the glass or rotate the lighter. I only apoly heat in a up and down motion on one side of the glass tube. I start a little slow and then pick up the pace as I see orange flame bouncing back off the glass. Then I can take a hit and as long as I continue this heating method I can take hits as long as I can in my Supreme. Not quite as thick but pretty damn close. I actually let my Supreme rest Friday night because I was just about Gnockedout!

I find ground material to be to restrictive on the draw for my enjoyment. Tiny buds are working great and giving me the air flow back!

So you keep heating while you draw then? Interesting no rotations... What torch are you using btw? Haven't tried mine out again yet, its with the rest of my glass, still all packed up from the move...

Right, I think I'm gonna have time to do a small batch this weekend! So hopefully Gn0ck0ff v.2 will be here soon.

It's been a very transitional time the past month or so. I've moved to the city, got a new job, got a new studio space, place to live, etc etc. Good times. Admittedly the job kind of limits how much time I'll be in the studio, but I'm sure my work-life balance will return to equilibrium once I'm properly settled.

Anyway, i'll make a few while I'm at the studio this weekend (girlfriends away!) So I'll post pics etc next week. Can't wait to try them out :science: :lol:

Take it easy FC
