I noticed my Volcano ABV is very pale almost like a sand color with a greenish tint, even when ending at 440. Is this normal? Is it a sign of incomplete vaporization? I tried vaping a full solid valve load of abv at 440 and do get a bit of vapor but barely anything.

My LSV's abv was a mix of both black burnt bits and green unvaped bits, the Volcano's abv is perfectly even in color but very pale like there may be something left. Should I be concerned the Volcano isn't getting everything out?
My Volcano ABV is very light as well and thats even running a new load at close to max. Haven't tried putting the ABV in other vapes. Maybe you could try putting some in your LSV and see if you get any substantial vapor.

My solid valve or easy valve abv put under a wire pad, is darker. Otherwise it's light abv. If you crank it up to max temp, abv may be darker.
I read some recent comment by uncle @Vitolo here as 191/192 °C being the "best" temp in terms of effects and harshness of vapor (absence of:)). Well, You can go 195°C but most strains you'll gain on effects and lose a bit on flavor. Having to cough is worth it? If you are running out, maybe? I usually leave it at 191 as I leave my Evo at noon, do my sessions and that's it. I'm done (at this moment in time and place) tilting temps just to cough at the beginning of a volcano bag or at the end on af Evo session to feels that f****ing burnt flavor I could achieve on a MFLB really easily :D In 2 words I'm done overthinking stuff! As well as I can.. :D
So yes vaping at 191 straight my abv is light but I get 5 flavorful bags, not 5 good one and 1 that I cough up a lung to.And it's a bit of a pain waiting the Volcano to cool down imho.

Hey guys, just bought a Volcano Classic today and absolutely love it!!

Big concern though, my roommate thought some grinded bud fell into the volcano, so while the air pump was on! he lifted it up and flipped it over and then held it upside down for a moment before flipping it back down and, finally, turning it off.

Now I'm not 100% sure because I'm not very familiar with it yet, but I want to say it sounds almost differently now? Like the pump is higher pitched or rattleyish? Could something have happened when he flipped it? It sounded pretty nasty when it was in the sideways position...

How is the air path, pump, and heater designed? Could something go out of alignment and cause a possible inhalant/air path risk like exposing electronics or whatnot.

Thanks for whatever info you can provide :D

Sorry to double post, but it wont let me edit my last one. I'm only asking about all these concerns because in the manual it makes it clear that you should NEVER have the device on when it isn't perfectly flat horizontal... and like I said when mine was basically lifted, flipped, and slightly shaken - the air pump was completely on and screaming D:!

I checked through the manual and there is no warning of mechanical failure if you operate the unit when it is not horizontal. These units get shipped world wide and I guarantee they are not handled gently. Having the unit on and tipping it should have no permanent effect on its function. The reason that they advise that you do not operate the Volcano anyway other than upright on a flat surface is basically common sense. The thing shoots heated air out and placing it any way but the recommended way is a fire hazard. I honestly dont see any way that holding it upside down when its running should damage the unit. So I guess the question is, does your Volcano work fine if you use it as intended? If the thing still screams, when used properly then you most certainly have a problem. If you are still concerned, then contact Stors and Bickle. Im sure they can answer all of your questions.

Thanks so much for the response! My concern isn't of it being 'broken' as much as something being out of alignment causing the air path to blow in air from the electrical compartment or if the heater started rubbing against something it shouldn't. The device appears to work pretty normally, but I'm more concerned about the quality and safety of the vapor now. Just to clarify - the device can be on when held directly upside down and still work normally, but once it's any other direction besides straight up or down the terrible grinding sound and vibration occurs. I wouldn't have cared if my roommate took it, flipped it upside down, and THEN turned it on... instead it was already blowing air when he went to manhandle it.

The exact concern is the motor/pump being on while the thing was held horizontally/tilted/spun/etc.... The noise the pump made was beyond scary. I believe the pump is designed to vibrate/move directly up and down... yet with gravity pulling it sideways and such while on, I'm sure its possible that it could have moved some stuff around internally or messed up some alignments. But I have no idea what the internals look like, so I'm not sure if this is even cause for concern.

I'd say get on YouTube and listen to several volcano videos and do a sound comparison. Report back and let us know what you find.

Lol that literally was the first thing I did! But it's super hard to compare that sound. No matter what, the recorded sound won't sound the same as having the thing right next to you. It's like comparing apples to apples...

Plus there aren't any videos of the device just sitting still with the air pump on (without a bag/herb chamber attached) for a long enough time for me to try to compare.

If someone here is brave enough, you could always try turning on your volcanos air flow and then picking it up and rotating it 90 degrees to hear this sound it makes for yourself. Afterwards when you set it down, then I'm curious if it still sounds normal.

Thanks again everyone.

Im with Vitolo on this one. While I dont think it would cause permanent damage, I love my Volcano way too much to play guinea pig on this one!

After your latest post I do kind of wonder if flipping it while its running had some negative effect due to centrifugal force in the air pump and that it may have caused an out of alignment condition but if it sounds fine now, fills the balloon properly and there is no vapor leakage, then I would guess your Volcano is fine. Still, if you continue to have concerns then I would definitely contact customer support at Stors and Bickle and ask them about it. They engineered the Volcano, if anyone could definitively address you issue, its them.

Thanks for understanding my concern. And I do have some good news, today my roommate (same one who flipped it!) used the volcano for a few bags or so. After he seemed fine I tried one or two and all seems okay... I mean I didn't really see any vapor leaking out of the volcano or anything. It's really hard to tell if somethings wrong with it, besides the pump sounds off to me (except there's no way for me to really know if its messed up because I only had it for an hour or so before it was flipped, so I never really memorized that sound). But I am still quite concerned about possible off gassing in the air path or something else due to potential misalignment.

I don't want to call S&B and explain this too them because I know if something is wrong or should be replaced, then my admission of it being flipped would definitely cancel out any covered warranty fixes. Yet at the same time, if I don't call them and ask about it then I'll never know if something bad could have actually happened... it's a double edged sword.

Did anybody on these forums ever open and take apart a Volcano themselves? I've watched videos of the Crafty and other portables being disassembled on youtube before so I'd imagine someone has done it with the Volcano - after all it's probably one of the most notorious vapes on the market.

Hey new Volcano owner here too, I actually did the same thing to mine during my new vape burn off ritual, and got the same nasty clicking sound that your talking about. At first I was almost in a panic, thinking I may have ruined a very expensive new piece of equipment. After careful examination and many uses since this happened, I can safely say that my machine has not been negatively effected in any way. I hope this helps, as theres nothing worse then uncertainty over a new vape.

I don't have one of these, But you are fine. The air comes in from the bottom under the small foam air filter. There is nothing flipping it would have done to change where the air intakes unless the inlet hose came loose which is unlikely. If it's making a weird noise it could be the little "Flapper valve" under the air filter, make sure its seated right. If this all looks good and air is coming in from this point (fresh air intake)then I would say you are good to go. If your pump is extra noisy maybe something in there is misaligned or a bearing is going bad but this wouldn't course any heath risks, it would only shorten the life of the pump and would of course be covered under warranty. So Vape on, it's all good man.

I decided to try this for you... but not in Real Life.
I went to the virtual World of Second Life where I have duplicated many of my Vaporizers....
and decided to try this out there and not with my home unit... just my virtual unit.
This is what happened:
Could the Volcano be used with a whip by turning off the fan after each hit - perhaps in a faster session? Has anybody tried this?
Yes I have tried it many times.
See http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/volcano.220/page-95#post-937344 where I describe using whip with Bubbler.

Just saw this. Yeah I've tilted my Volcano slightly in the past while it was on, and it made that sound you were talking about. However, as soon as I heard it, I untilted it, and there was no decrease in performance, and the sound immediately went back to normal. So there may be a chance that the pump in yours got misaligned slightly or something, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I found out that solid valves abv is darker than easy valve's. IMHO it's better when the herbs do not float around. Regardless if easy or solid. On the easy valve set, I achieve this by vaping a full bowl.. Or adding some abv on top of rosemary.
I refill bags as long as I see thick vapor. On the solid valve set this is done by the bowl itself which has a sort of spring specifically designed for the job.

Don't forget there was a detailed discussion in this thread about using the concentrate pad with the e-z valve.... on top of your herb. This duplicates the effect of the solid valve's spring.

To save me the hassle of going back and trying to find the specific discussion.

What was the outcome?
I would imagine the concensus would have been pad on top for EZ bowl, small load?
