next generation e-nails?

In case anyone else was waiting on the Sapphire Halo's, they're apparently releasing a batch in a couple weeks that's open to the public. All the info in the thread here. I messaged them last night and am just waiting to hear back now.

@grokit ^^^ that one is not compatible with a coil; torch only.
D-nail says that about hive's nail, I think there were issues with the v1 cracking etc. But that's the only place I can find this warning, also the v1 had other problems. I can't find any mention of it on hive's website, I even found a q&a page that could have addressed it. Do you think their v2 nails also have this issue?

From the picture of the SiC Torch nail I think the centre post is too thick to accommodate a flat coil.

Ya even if you unwound a coil to fit it would then be not anywhere near thick enough and just rest at the button near the ceramic base. Unless you made it a tight fit to the top. Seems like it wouldn't be good for the life of the coil and maybe the nail as well.

Even though they're from two different makers the dishes are supposed to be interchangeable. But even if the coil fit properly around the base, I agree that it looks like I would have to find a spacer/washers to keep it tight. It seems that if I want to try a ceramic nail with a flat coil, the 710 whip kit would've been the best option. But I may reach out to hive, and see what they have to say about the improvements to their v2.

I posted this in the ceramic nail thread but it's kind of dead over there, and since this has a sic dish it's got next generation cred lol. I was wondering if any of you fine folk had an opinion on this nail.

I just noticed that d-nail makes a sic replacement insert for hive's 2-piece domeless ceramic nail.

It looks like it would work well with a standard flat e-coil. Has anybody tried it?

I have not heard of this being used with a flat coil, although with potentially a bit of work to reshape the coil you could get it to work I'd say :D

SiC is really resistant to pretty much anything except for very hard physical impacts, I would not be concerned about metal expansion on the SiC too much. Please do report if this works well if you end up trying it!

EDIT: Also I can report that the domeless.com ceramic nails are great with an e-nail and flat coil :D

thats actually a torch version @grokit - the space between the base and dish looks too big for a flat coil

I think he's aware of that.
I got the impression that he's proposing using a flat coil despite it being intended for torch use?

Whattabout putting the coil in there with a spring underneath?
Something fairly thin, and just strong enough to keep the coil up against the dish?
Wouldn't conduct much heat away, and would allow for the coil expanding as it heats?

Tired of the D-Nail auto tune messing with the pid settings on the control unit when switching between flat and 20mm coils so I threw together a $60 diy nail specifically tuned for 20mm coils

Super easy ... literally took 2 hours start to finish including filing out 2 of the 4 mounting holes.

would love to see a parts list for this

PID
SSR

Work box (the xlr and power inlet holes need to be filed out a bit if using the same connectors that I did)
Coil toggle switch (doesn't fit round hole on rear of work box perfectly so I needed to use a couple beads of super glue to keep it snug)
XLR connector
Power inlet
Power cable

Already had 16 ga wire, 20 ga wire, solder, blade connectors

Here's a good wiring diagram for reference.

Seems like it's so shallow that it would never get really stuck. It definitely sticks to my adapter when it gets cold, but it seems to only sit on the tip of a 14mm female that it wouldn't get stuck.

@Nintenjoo

I'm running my V1.3 base in an 18mm female dropdown:

BMyeHE4.jpg

Makes it so only the upper ring of the nail touches the glass of the dropdown.
The lower portion doesn't come into contact with the glass at all and acts in a direct-inject fashion:

On a side note I just ordered a Liger V2 with SiC insert; the wait time is 2-4 weeks.
That is not a problem as it gives me some time to dab a measured amount of concentrate through the DNail SiC Halo.
After which I will consume the same amount of concentrate via the Liger V2 and do a reclaim comparision.

Baby's all cleaned up and ready for the first part of the experiment:

@MileHighLife
Thank you, this rig pleases me. :ko:
Yes sir, Lamar indeed.
You know your glass!
This is the nicest non-custom dropdown I have run across.

It's surprising how much the right dropdown affects rig performance and appearance.
I was super happy when I found this dropdown.
With it's repeated use of spheres and the central Maria, I really think it compliments the overall look of the BallCycler.
Plus it puts the nail in just the right spot.

Not to mention how well it mates with the DNail V1.3 nail base, in both appearance and function.
I get NO reclaim build-up between the nail and dropdown wall and can remove the nail from the dropdown at will.

I have two slimline bases (V1.4), that while perhaps more streamlined and aesthetic, both get stuck in every dropdown that I put them in, essentially "marrying" them to the dropdown.

Very nice. Interesting about the base, how it doesn't even contact the drop down.

It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on the Liger vs Dnail dish.

I'm running my 14/18 male slim series base in my DHgate $6 drop down and so far so good.

:D:science::D[/QUOTE] be sure to check all your variables, same enail temperatures, as well as the temperature of the water in the rig that your using.

What do you all know of Sheldon Black's enail??
I'd not noticed it on their site till this weekend...

Looks like a really tight package and competitively priced. Is there anything a brand name $500+ enail is going to do that this one can't?

I'm likely going to get this or the cheapo $125 DHGate pelican package.

Pretty sure it's a rebrand, I guess the question is does China sell it? The size is perfect for travel especially if you can pair it with the right battery.

That gave me an idea which led to me buying this battery pack with an AC outlet. If I read the specs right it should be able to power my current e-nail without needing a special 12V model. I checked the power draw and it only peaks around 95W when it's heating up otherwise it bounces between 0.5W and 43W to maintain the temp. If it works it'll mean I can finally use my e-nail outside in the park during the summer which would be great especially since using a torch in broad daylight is a huge pain in the ass not to mention sketchy looking. If it doesn't work, I've been meaning to buy one for work soon anyway.

Low

Have you considered the auber? It cost me 70$ for the unit and 60$ for the 20mm coil. I had not realized that I could get the coil from Amazon for $35. I've had mine for a little over a month, and I could not be any happier with the unit. I'm using the hive ceramic nail with it, which I'm also very happy with. I usually dab at 580 to 620f. with this setup. Good luck.
