You can't accurately measure the Sub with an IR gun without adjusting for emissivity. Metals reflect infrared in proportion to how polished the surface is. Try this experiment: bring water to a boil in a stainless steel pot, then point your IR gun at the surface. Since a SS pot is shiny it reflects IR better than it emits it, so the reading will be much lower than 100°C/212°F.

Won't you end up with a number either way that you can use as a reference?

By any chance could you elaborate a little more on what spot you mean when you say just below the joint of the 2 bits? are you talking about the bottom-most part of it, the piece that's thinner than the rest of it? thanks
here ya go

So I need to put an IR on the list with the welding gloves when I buy this thing right, I wonder if there's anything else I need other than a huge bottle of aloe?

Definitely don't need the ir . But it's awesome and they are so cheap and handy why not? If no Ir the lick ya finger and touch the atomizer tells you if the unit has gone too cold and i can get a good feel for how hot it is by bringing the apollo near my nose and feeling the heat. But yeah gun, awesome. A neat setup and a regular process keeps the burns away. Touch wood but i haven't got a burn off the apollo yet.

I think the female threads of the bowl get clogged with oil, and they're very hard to clean. I soak both parts in ISO once a week, but I think I need some kind of tool to scrape out the oil. Just wondered if you anyone had any suggestions, as I don't really want to have to buy a new atomizer every month.

PBW! Iso ain't got nothing on it. I disassemble the atty and soak every part in powdered brewers wash (or alcanox) 2 teaspoons with boiling water in a little tub, strong solution. Rinse clean with hot water, the few stubborn bits of gunk can easily be removed with a poke or brush. The atomizer comes out like new. If i'm being anal I will then wipe threads with iso before assembly.

@jojo monkey Yeah exactly. I understand the reflective issues with ir guns but you get a ball park reference and its been working great for me! My ti apollo isn't all that shiny anymore. And that temp reference has proven reliable with my ir gun.

Thanks so much Teedub!! Thats all i needed to know, so basically make sure the top part is at optimal vaping temperature. Time to order this IR gun now :)

Thanks Teedub, not heard of PBW before (I'm from Europe), but found some on eBay. So I've placed an order. How long do you leave everything soaking for? 24hrs?
...............................
@TurboVape , I'm just a Sub bystander but do know PBW.
The only downside I see with using PBW is possible white stains which are avoided by:
1. make sure it is totally totally dissolved. I use really hot water to help it dissolve
2. not soak too long or it can stain. For glass which shows stains so easily, only soak for about 10 minutes and repeat if necessary to get goo off. Metals might not show stains as readily as glass but better to be cautious IMO

Yeah a short soaking in pbw. I leave it in a bit longer than 10 mins but find out what works for you. I've also left it soaking for a few hours not necessary though pbw is good stuff.

I've read a bit about this, but most the information is on the other (older) sub thread. Plus I know most people say that many monkeys are different and inconsistent with each other.

What's a good setting for me to start on when my sub arrives tomorrow (or god forbid Thursday instead :(). My IR gun wont be arrivin for a bit, so in the mean time i'd like to work my way up from light flower vapor hits to full double decker lung demolishers. sadly i get quite impatient with vaporizers normally and thats why i've held off buying one until i saw the sub, so i'm scared i'll spend a couple hours fiddling with the sub and, after getting crappy results, give up and go hit the bong O.o

I have just used my BBQ thermometers to measure my sub.

Thermapen maxed out at 300*c

The maverick punched on till 330*f

I could never get a reading with IR

Start low and build your way up to near combustion. Use colour of the ABV as a kind, the blacker it is the closer to combustion it is. Once you've found a setting that gives a very dark brown or black ABV, you've pretty much found a double decker setting.
I start off at 3 on the dial for my first hit of the day, ending on a 5 before bed (6 if I'm double deckering).

If your a bong smoker, you might find the high underwhelming at first. If you do, you'll need to quit combustion totally, and after 4-5 days of vaping you should start feeling the effects more. That's what I found in my experience.

I started at 4 and then slowly walked up the temp range until I settled on 6 for a warm room and 7-8 for a cold room. I only push to 9 for concentrates. It took me a few days to master.

So I just felt the need to come here because i need to vent. god damn it, sublimator.ca has by far the worst shipping i've ever see out of any company ever. i've ordered things from China with free shipping and it arrived in a third of the time!!

gah, its been over 3 weeks since i placed my 600 dollar order - and paid an extra near 30 bucks for the freaking shipping!!! - and it's still not here. hell it took them over a week just to ship it out, and now its days past the expected delivery date. the canada post has by far one of the worst tracking systems i've ever seen too, with it literally giving you zero updates after arriving in a foreign country.

you can disown me if you want, but man i'm just so annoyed. like i've received preorders quicker! i guess i should have paid the extra 12 dollars for whatever the next best shipping option they had, but i'm sure that'd only get it here a day earlier..

if you're thinking of getting a sub and don't feel like waiting a month after paying, then order it from anyone other than Sublimator.ca! my Subbuddy Reclaimer from planetvape arrived 2 weeks ago, and i placed the order at the same time as the sub xD

Anyway, hopefully i'll have some good news to share tomorrow!! i've never been more impatient in my life

That sucks man. I had to wait 2 weeks for mine, and was counting the days I was so excited. Have they definitely shipped it? As I was under the impression they had manufacturing problems at the moment.

Anyway, don't let it get you down too much, it will certainly be worth the wait :D

For all of those interested, a k-type thermocouple would be the best way to measure temps on your sub. They can be had quite cheaply and many are available that will reliably measure well upwards of 1200f.

Units such as what I describe usually have an SS node that plugs into a small cheap controller with a digital display that reads the temp. You touch the SS onto whichever part of the sub you want to measure, or poke the node into the holes on the dabmaster/apollo heater even, many such thermocouples that I've seen will fit for this purpose :)

This will be a cheap and easy way to have digital temperature measurement in real time incorporated into the sub ;)

Of course, you would still need to control the temp itself with the monkey controller.

Canada Post tracking cannot be relied on once it has left the country. You have to use USPS tracking, which is much worse in my experience. This applies in both directions, by the way.

I've never been in Canada and had something shipped to it from the USPS so I can't relate, but I do know if I order packages from Europe or China then they always continue updating the shipping information even after changing countries - or at least the DHL tracking number then starts working with USPS. Normally all you have to do is type the tracking number in Google to find a link to whatever company is handling it, yet Google turns up nothing with either of my two Canada Post items.

Regardless, I think today HAS to be the day it arrives. Fingers crossed!! I can't hold in my excitement any longer :freak:

I suggest using a deburrer when your female threads are too gunked up. You can just soak the deburrer after and it'll be good as new again

@thenamefittz you receive your unit yet? Been checking back here every day to see how you like it.

Also, has anyone seen this review that the Vape Critic did? His review on the Mighty was a big part of why I bought it, which is why I was super surprised to hear that he feels the sub is lackluster. To me, it's still the daily go-to. I did like how he compared it to a drag racer though. Pretty accurate.

Thanks for wondering!! And yeah, actually it arrived on March 9th and - as you can tell - I've been so into it that I've completely forgotten about the forum! Lol. I've literally been baked ever since, I don't know what it is but this thing gets you to an entirely new level of high. I'll wake up still high some days!! I've gone from smoking 1-1.5 grams a night to vaping like .6-.8 tops.

First off when I got it I (after waiting so long) instantly turned it on to highest for a little bit and then went to town. Everyone said it tasted funny, which it did, so then when we sobered up and read the manual... apparently you were supposed to do high temperature burn offs for an hour. Uh oh. I did feel sort of shitty during the first day or so, so perhaps that was it? Hope it's not too much concern now xP.

My only irks with it so far are that I can't get over this 'hair drier/curling iron' smell it gives off while heating. Also you can hear a slight electrical whirring noise coming from it. Oh and for some reason flowers only seem to work well in it (like 1-3 hits and done) at the 7 or 8 setting.

But here's an interesting story... the Sublimator has, in a sense, raped my favorite piece for a short period of time. I put that stupid 18mm teflon adapter around the atomizer and bam... first use in my piece and it got stuck inside my downstem. The past week that annoying 18mm ring has just been violating my bong.. it was taunting me dang it!

EDIT: I finally got it off after hours of going HAM, I said F it and took cutting tools, wire cutters, and razors and started to bend and break away at the teflon until I was able to get a nice lip to grab on with needle nose pliers. The trick here I believe was using a big banquet-style serving fork, one that has 3 large tines/prongs, to pry the teflon away from the glass after soaking it in extremely hot water. This is what created the weak spots and gaps for me to cut and pull away at to make a plier-friendly grabbable spot.

Haha good times! Glad to hear you are enjoying it. Did you end up going with the Titanium heating element/atomizer? Apollo version? When I use my Sub I only put small enough pinch so that everything is extracted in one hit. You should be getting good results at lower settings too.

Also, it may be too late now, but maybe try sticking your glass in the freezer for a little bit. Usually when my downstem gets stuck in my piece like that it is because of a small amount of resin and water that pretty much fuses the 2 pieces together. In the freezer the resin becomes brittle and the water freezes, which should make it a lot easier to pull apart.

Glad to hear there are sub still shipping.

@thenamefittz Always read the manual.

Sorry for your teflon story but a correct strat is to dedicate a 18/14 reducer for it and stick to 14mm teflon sizes. #2 always heat up the device disengaged of glass joints because of thermal expansion.

Sublimator are full of machining oil brand new! I still do not see why they do not add up a ISO bath/cleaning time for all the possible parts like atomizer. Simple as this.

The 1-hour burn up is bad thing for me as it burns all carcinogens that are in the machinning oils covering bowl making them deposit all over your precious.

Are you saying that an iSO soak is a viable alternative to the initial burn off & you think it should be included in the manual?

At first yes, ISO soak and then vagetal nut SOAP to kill all the oil (limpuro solution). rinse, dry, then burn off.

I am alerting on the machining oils from the first notice with the 1st ufo, here, then to Enrico directly when i met him in sept 2013. I told him for the medical goal and price point i was considering the minumum a clean and usable device from out of the box.

I get the information that the problem was treated in the manual by a initial burn off phase but it seems difficult to treat the current shit stocked like this. I am sad to see things gone the same way for 2 years.

As my personnal goal is to reduce risks for other people, i say it again. Clean your sub as soon you have it and regularly, do not let the sublimate cook too long.
Beware of burn and fire issues.
the 1-hour timeoff + 30 min heat up is a long night/run of subbing for the one operating it (you need one less baked to)

my :2c: ready to talk about it to Enrico again, we will meet soon. :peace: sub nation

I believe it actually says to do an ISO soak AND a burn off in the manual... just a shame they don't do it themselves before shipping it. @Vapodudule has the right idea, when it comes to a medical apparatus like this it should be as safe as possible for the user by the time it arrives.

But my Sub still isn't getting flowers well until the 7-9 settings, sometimes even hotter. Does anybody else's Sub make a slight electrical whirring noise too??

Also, here's my new major problem that's made it impossible for me to try to use my Sub in nearly a week... my asshole friend dropped it on the carpet (on setting 8) and, even though I instantly removed it, obviously carpet fibers fused to the device. In a super stoned adrenaline anxiety attack, I didn't know what to do besides to unplug the hot sub and take it into the bathroom to run it under the sink (on hot water). This probably was a terrible idea in hindsight, but at least it did cool it down enough to where I could start scrapping the goobs of carpet off (which now turned into a liquidishy mush that literally resembled candle wax perfectly).

Would you use it after this??
