Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

i'm retired and effort is not in my daily routine!

^This makes me think some type of cheap vise over a squeeze powered press. They work great for the young and ambitious ;), but can be physically demanding. I have back and shoulder issues that really were aggravated by squeeze clamps, so I went to a vise.

My best bang-for-buck tip is hit up a thrift store and look for an iron, they usually have a few for $5ish. I like the 2" plates, and digital temp is always good ( best if it starts in the low 200f range). My iron's lowest setting is around 300F, so I warm it up until it's too hot to touch, turn off, then load my paper and put it snugly in the vise, not all the way tight but tight. Then I just turn on the iron and listen for the first sizzle, then quickly off again, tighten up the rest of the way, and wait for the sizzle to subside.
Worth noting is the Remington hair irons IMO, they are very well constructed and take squeezing well, although I find the rows of vent holes in the Wet2Straight unit counterproductive since they reduce the usable width. The next model up has the digital control and no vents, so that may be my next buy when I finally crush this one ;) Savvy shoppers may buy at WalMart and get the $3 extended warranty, as it allows for "no questions" replacements, apparently even with a box of crushed hair iron lol.

While I am a vise grip c clamp proponent, if I were using the quick grip, i think this is the preferable version as it clamps with substantially more force. Also, that straightener only goes down to 300f, like mine. I am used to it and have a routine down that includes me turning it off before i fold my parchment and pre squish the flower, but if I were buying another straightener, I would definitely get one that has a low range around 200F

@stressed

you want the beefier quickgrip that's rated for 600lbs. the one you have linked is the dinkier version.

irwin xp600 with 6" bar

yeah i just saw another youtube where the guy got a 600 pound. he also changed something up. He no longer squishes the buds very hard. check it out.

i'm still only around page 30 of this freaking thread!

i also ordered some slick pads. first i ordered a big one, then i saw a post here mentioning getting 2 smaller ones so i got that too. i made 4 separate orders at amazon yesterday.

i should probably not order while getting medicated.

this is what i have to work with. Most of it is 3 years old or so.

ok, i just ordered the 600 pound but it will be days before it gets here. no prime, 2 day available. so now i have a 300 pound grip and 2 packs of paper that i probably won't use.

oh good, it'll be here in 2 days.

oil vapes the best!
i have a bench vise but prefer to use my c clamp vice grip style, as its lighter and easier to use in the livingroom where I hang out and toke. My bench vise is in the shed. the c-clamp vice grip is fully portable, doesn't need to be mounted to anything, and can be used anywhere. If i hung out in then shed and got high i might try the bench vise, but i also have a t shirt press out there i dont use :D

I have both and exclusively use the vise now since I don't have it hard mounted and can move it wherever. I feel I get better squishes with the vise and @Joel W. plates as opposed to the c-clamp with hair straighteners that do not go below 300F so they were a pain to use just because of the temps.

my hair iron is exceptional, in that it can go from far too low to use, to far too hot, so there is a good operating range in the middle.

so i got enough of the equipment to try my hand at making rosin.

boy do i suck! or my pot sucks! or my tech sucks or...! i don't know.

i ran about 8 grams total. i used a slick pad and i used parchment paper, 2 kinds. i tried it 7 different times. i tried a few seconds, i tried about 40 seconds. no difference in yield.

at most i got a few little beads of erl here and there. lots of sizzle which i assume is the water in the buds. the little bit of oil i did get, i couldn't figure out how to get off the dabber into my pipe. then i pulled the oil off the dabber using the paper. so i had a bead of oil that i eventually ended up losing. i'm assuming you leave the wettish oil alone on the paper until it hardens up a bit?

my $40 flat iron only goes as low as 300 degrees! i wanted one that did around 230 degrees but didn't figure that out until after i ordered.

i used the 300 pound grip thing but the 600 pounder should be in tomorrow.

i have much fresher pot that the store says is over 20% thc but i didn't want to waste the good stuff until i figured things out.

could the pot i've been smoking for 3 years and getting nicely high off of have so few trichs or is it me? i donno!

i pretty much did things like this guy\\

meanwhile, i'm thinking of buying one of these - :)

no not the girl...

Did you try clamping the iron first, then heat til you hear the first sizzle? I find that works well, so you don't overheat the oil. IME the "wet" oil happens when my herb is too damp, fresh, or premature, but it can also happen for me at lower temps. I think a little hotter blasts the water from the trichs faster? IDK, not a real expert lol/.

Also, I think from the math in your post you squished about 1.15g per time? IMO that's too much for a clamp press, I would do .5g pre-compressed to a flat rectangle in the 600lb clamp.

Agreed, .5ish precompressed nugs will work better. I put mine on the crease of the parchment paper, so the oil goes three ways (out the sides and top) instead of in the middle of my plate and having it go out four ways. I don't really go above .75g "rosin coins" myself. I don't have a nice setup for that kind of squishing.

I've said it before, less is more for the amount of flower being used...I use 2" square plates, so I ensure that the flower I'm pressing still has a lot of surface area plate around it...the squished nug should not exceed the edges of the heated plates. After the squish, there should still be "bare" plate all the way around the already squished nug.

good ideas guys! i went down to 1/2 a gram and got this! i also put the hair thing into the clamp and then turned it on. i will be messing around with this for awhile. :)

i put it in the fridge trying to harden it but it stayed soft and sticky. i had planned on just somehow dripping it into a bowl of pot or onto a cotton ball but it is still soft and sticky and until i get my new vape device i'm not sure how to vape this. duh! as you can see, for some reason, i smeared it all over the paper.

i ordered a garlic press but it isn't here yet so i just make a disk using the paper. i'll be experimenting more when i get the 600 pounder and this nectar collector i ordered to vape it with. i'm going to get some shatter and wax at the pot store in a day or 4.

and i got a good brulee touch from bed bath and beyond.

Which iron is that? Got a link? I haven't been able to find one locally that goes below 300 and my current straightener is on its last legs.

I'm excited to try this technique as I've never had any concentrates but I always have access to herb and my wife and daughter have hot irons. what do you do with the herb when you are finished? can you still vape it or is the THC extracted with the oil? will this still work if the herb has been ground ? thx

You can vape the pressed chips, they remind me of ABV that was vaped on lower temps. Very little flavor but some of the more narcotic hits left in them. I've washed them with ISO for food grade oil, and many make tinctures by tossing them in 190 proof alcohol.
You can use ground herb, but I find it needs to be able to clump, if it crumbles when you ball it up it may be too dry and will likely contaminate the oil as well. Also presumably some of the trichomes fall off when grinding, hurting yield a little. I break up by hand a little to pull stems, then chuck in parchment and pre-compress it.
