Herb Grinders

Hi there

I currently have one vape (Crafty) with one on order (Grasshopper) (I am currently winning the fight not to order more vapes as I progress through the reports on this forum). Does anyone have a grinder recommendation for these two? The Crafty does come with an acrylic grinder, and it's OK, but got a bit of buildup already and I get the impression that I could get better results with another grinder. I intend to use the grinder just at home, but would prefer something not too conspicuous so I can get away with it despite my meddling kids ;)

At the moment I'm thinking that a two or three piece SCS would do me fine, and I readily admit I don't really know much (like why there are 2, 3 and 4 piece grinders - one reason is a 'kief' screen I believe).

cheers
(and as it is FRiday, I do have a beer as well as some other suitable refreshment).

2 pc require dumping the load out.

3 pc collect the load in a chamber.

4 pc collect the kief that falls off during the grinding process for later use. Kief is much more potent than bud so it can be used as something to kick things up a notch.

So I just got my 2.75" 2 piece Santa Cruz Shredder, but I noticed some stuff on vertical edges of the teeth. I ground up some paper and got shavings. Is this normal? I bought this on ebay, wondering if this a genuine SCS? Looked on the SCS website and they say they don't honor warranties on grinders bought on amazon or ebay.

No that isn't normal, I've had my shredder almost 2 years and never once had any flaking or shaving of metal, I have with other brands of cheaper grinders though. Ive used a lot of my friends SCS as well and never once saw that happen. In any case I don't think you want to be vaping anything with metal flakes in it, but that's just my 2 cents

Ground up some more paper and no more shavings. The grinder has a good weight to it, the magnet is very strong and the rest of the grinder looks good. Not sure if the machining is bad since I don't have another SCS to compare but here are more pics. Hope its a real one that slipped thru QC, but who knows.

I remember reading about them updating their grinders? The teeth on my 2 piece don't have the ridge halfway down them, they're concave on the ends and straight down.

This is not exactly grinder related, but I know that many of you have Space Case Stash Containers and the Santa Cruz Shredder has a storage space with a concave shape.

I saw these stash containers called Supercan (they sell on amazon and ebay) that look like a combination of the space case with the SCS concave bowl at the bottom. What do you guys think? Anyone have one? I'm debating between this and the Space Case Small Stash container. This one is 1" by 1.5" across and the Space Case is 1" by 1.25" across. This one honestly looks more solid and I like the concave bottom, but SC has the precision threading and is probably lighter.

Why not just use a coffee grinder? Simple to use and takes not time. It does grind pretty fine but that is a plus to me

That's one reason. They work better with bigger amounts is two, and three is that a lot of people like keeping their stash in nug form until they get around to vaping it. And coffee grinders aren't exactly portable either.

I've got a 2x1 supercan. Concave bottom is nice, and it's beefier than space case, but not finished quite as nicely and doesn't thread as smooth. Have you considered the Chico size jyarz?

Nice. Is the Supercan smell proof? Between Supercan and Space Case which would you say is better overall? I have a Chico size Jyarz. I love it for storage, but I'm looking for something sleeker to use as a carry case.

I only use mj at home where smell is low priority, and all of my stuff is in one spot so hard to say whether either is smell proof. Both are just aluminum threads and an o-ring, so functionally there's not much difference. I might give space case an edge in sleekness.

Is the space case a lot harder to open than the Supercan? Some of the reviews I read about SC stash was that it was kind of annoying to screw on and off. However, that may also help with the airtight and smell proof factor. I might have to get both, but I'm leaning towards the SC now.

Slightly more challenging to open/close because it has a smaller diameter and a shinier finish, but I wouldn't say it's a big deal

I used a coffee grinder for 15 years but would not go back in a hurry. In fact I gifted my old warhorse coffee grinder to a friend as I have no use for it & she likes to give me the kief/tobacco dust it collects. Solvent, filter, purge, good times abound.

I can only speak stupidly highly about the benefits of a good quality grinder for shredding the material rather than hacking it up like a coffee grinder. Horses for courses though so whatever works.

That's my experience with a coffee grinder as well, and I would never go back. Super easy to use, but the grind gets pulverized and destroyed to high hell, knocking off all the trichs and always destroyed my airways especially with a convection vape.

Grinding with a quality grinder has completely changed the game for me. I definitely notice a lack of potency when using a coffee grinder as well, even with the kif added back in.

I only use a blade coffee grinder with ABV to pulverize for cannacaps, the drawbacks are too numerous, as listed above, to use on good fresh cannabis.

Team NO SLEEP!
Diappointed... SCS just wrote me back refusing to do a slightly custom order... requested a new grinder with the new grips be paired with an old fine screen.... it's not going to happen.

That's awesome! I want that grinder badly and now I can get it a great discount thanks to you!

Still don't know whether to just go with the SLX....i'm thinking i'd only use the coarser plate with the Gr8Tr since the vape plate does give a pretty fine grind, maybe too fine for my liking, but I suppose it's nice to have 2 choices.

The SLX looks like it just has the perfect size grind and non stick. Decisions decisions...too many options!

I don't see many updates of Comptons.

Anyone still using theirs? Were they just a fad?
I had thought they looked so nice...
I picked up a smaller 4 piece from my local headship about 4-5 months back. I love the final grind that I get from it but there are things about it that I am struggling with. The middle piece that holds the ground bud is constantly threaded on too tight and it is almost impossible to unscrew it with my bad wrists. That has to be my biggest complaint, it tightens when I grind up the herb then I can't get to what I just ground up. The threads can also be quite finicky at times and it just doesn't want to thread together. It also doesn't collect very much keef but it has a much finer screen so the quality is better, I know that this isn't a big deal to most of you. My SCS collects 3x the amount that the Compton does but the quality is not the same. Overall I love the finish and quality of the grinder but with that said I am looking to replace it.

I have been looking at the GR8TR. My SCS dos not grind up the herb fine enough. Does anyone think I would go wrong pick one up?

EDIT: just picked up a GR8TR while they are on sale. Does anyone know where I can pick up a 80 and 100 micron screen for it?

Same conundrum that I had. I am pretty sure I am the first member here to get a SLX v2.0 & I have zero regrets. I doubt I would have regrets with the Kannastor GR8TR either but the SLX won me over with the ceramic coating. I am far from technical but I consider the fact I have put at least 100g through it & have brushed it out twice yet it is as clean as the day I got it as proof positive of the coatings claims.

It will take something pretty damm special to get me away from the SLX now.

I think like before, I have no choice but to purchase both, since i'll never be satisfied and always curious. I can always sell the one that I don't prefer, although I have a strong feeling there will be a time and place for both!

@SpeedDemon4 I agree that the SCS doesn't grind very fine. @Stevenski do you know how the SLX grind compares to the SCS?

I just splurged on an GR8TR solid body, i got the solid body GR8TR for about what the Vape GR8TR cost, $69. EZvapes has a 20% discount going on for the solid body GR8TR.

I couldn't go back and edit my post, here is the link below. ......^ The post I quoted is my post from last night.

I also bought some Grinder Grease for my Santa Cruz Shredder, I soaked my SCS in ISO and cleaned the crap outta it, it works a ton better clean, lol! I'll lube it a tiny bit when the grinder grease comes in and start using my SCS as a backup to my incoming GR8TR. http://www.puffitup.com/Grinder-Grease-Lube-for-your-Grinder-p/gg.grind-grea.htm I used discount code puffedup.
