Discontinued The Grasshopper

Hello all!
I'm back again with another DIY tip! This is a good one!:)

After having no luck being able to put my hopper in my leather case with the session extender or the super thin silicone E-cig condom mod I decided it was time to make a case for my hopper.

This is super easy to do and will only cost you $1.65 and a few minutes of your time.
I went to a cigar shop and picked up a cigar in a plastic tube for just $1.65.

Here is a pick of what I'm talking about.

I used a razor blade (a hobby knife would have been ideal) and a pair of needle nose pliers. I had to cut the center of the lid for the clicker to fit into. The inside of the lid was just a plastic X.

The hopper does not fit in the cigar tube centered because of the clip. All you need to do is twist one of the plastic partitions on the cap and the clicker fits nicely into the cap.

The Hopper fits in there perfectly and the clicker is safe from an accidental turn on. It doesn't rattle and it's water proof, I would say water resistant though to be safe. I stuck the tube in water withe the cigar and it did not get wet.

A water resistant protective grasshopper case that is inconspicuous and it fits in very nicely for $1.65!

If you trim the whole inside of the cap the hopper can fit with the session extender, they also had slightly larger cigar tubes (approximately 1" longer) for $1.79. They also have metal cigar tubes but I thought the plastic ones would serve the purpose better.

I know it's not super fancy but it works, it's cheap, and keeps your hopper looking great and dry!

:science:

This should help everyone that has been waiting for the stainless case! Or at least tide you over!

December 2015 SS Pre-order here, but I decided to bite the bullet and get it through VapeFiend. I was going to switch my SS to a TI with Hopper Labs, but I didn't want to adjust my place in line. I was able to pick up the TI GH with the warranty for $295 tax and shipping included which is 207 British Pounds.

Price on their website is 249 Pounds, but thats the price with VAT (no not VAS) tax included which Americans do not need to pay. (unless we have a President Cruz who has announced he will implement a VAT tax, although not call it that)

I have heard a lot of people talking about how they are really "jacking" the prices, but I see $80 as a modest return for the investment for the owner of VF who waited so long for the units to be delivered. For me, $80 is nothing compared to skipping another 6-8 month wait as December 2014 preorders have not shipped, let alone December 2015.

A little over 5-7 biz days for shipping. I meant to add express shipping, but their were only 10 orders available and it wouldn't let me add it so I just took what was available so I didn't lose the order.

I will put up my daily observations for a week or so after I get it!

Good Doctor!

I have learned a lot from you through this process. From the updates to mods to do it yourself cases. Your on point and I know we all appreciate it.

Did you get a leather sleeve? If you did, did you not think it was adequate protection? Or are you just satisfied with a do it yourself carry solution?

Edit: I understand you don't like the standard case because you use a number of Mods that don't fit in the leather sleeve, Duh

I apologize for the B2B post!

Thank you! You are most kind and very welcome my friend!:D

Yes I did get a leather sleeve. The hopper fits great in it and keeps it 3/4 covered (from the tip to the clip), but I want to be able to travel with a silicone tip or a session extender. The hopper is such a tight fit in the leather sleeve it is not possible.:disgust:

I like to take 3-5 draws back to back and the MP gets very hot:mad:, so some MP protection is necessary in my case.

No matter what I have and how well it works I always look to find or make something even better!

This is because I feel everything can be improved on and if you don't want to spend the money on the sleeve or case, this is a great much cheaper alternative that can be bought with the change in your ash tray and it can be made in minutes!

I would also feel much safer if I dropped it while it was stored in the tube than the sleeve. The whole back end is still exposed in the sleeve.

I have a bad habit of "lapping" things. If I'm in my car with my vape on my lap, I forget, I get out of my car and my vape meets pavement:bang:. This was actually more of a problem with glass pipes, but I still worry about it.

Now it can fall in a puddle of water and I'm like...whatever.:)

Are you taking 4 puffs back to back?

Two tricks I found which REALLY helped mitigate the hot mouthpiece issue:
1) Click off the vape halfway through your draw and keep inhaling to help drain some of the heat out of the mouthpiece
2) Try holding the mouthpiece with your fingers between puffs - this helps draw heat out of the mouthpiece (and into your fingers - so be careful if it's too hot!)

If I slow down my pace with the Hopper, I could really puff away for a long session without the mouthpiece getting too hot.

Damn I miss owning a hopper, can't wait for my preorder to ship!

I usually click on and take 2 or 3 hits clicking off in the middle of last one. Will try to do it like you to see how it goes, thx!

Offtopic: @Ratchett I sent you a pm ;)

They paid a little less than $100 each, according to the IGG site, so are making a lot more than $80 on each one. I don't care either way, not trying to give them shit for making money, just clearing up the math....

Mine was really a comment on what he was charging above the MSRP, not what he got each unit for when he originally backed them over two years ago. Your under $100 figure is based on $2250/25 hoppers so $90 per, but consider that that order only included Standard Hoppers and not Titanium (based on the website). I imagine the TI retail kit was a bit more expensive, but probably not by much. If you want to get specific about it I'm sure he saved/lost a load of money based on the currency he used to make the transaction (and the rate of exchange at the time) Also I was making a comment on the fact that he could, but didn't gouge his customers. Just clearing up the semantics....

Isn't there a 300 page post limit? :o

Anyway, on overheating real quick again - Like I said I've yet to experience any overheating with the Hopper, and I doubt my age or time partaking in cannabis has anything to do with that. I've left the Hopper on for 3 back to back hits to clear a chamber on 5 - the way we see @ShayWhiteGrow do it in his videos. Normally I rip it for about 45 seconds alternative between hard, soft, and hard inhales, and turn it off about 15 seconds before I feel like I'll want to inhale. I just think it's interesting, that's all!

i got an idea about how to keep clean your Hopper mouthpiece- DON'T use it! if hopping at home trough a bong.

i mean. fill the thing up. put a glass bowl with screen inside on top. connect this setup to a bong and hit it! also you can use some kind of rubber ring if you wanna tighter fit.

benefits? your mouthpiece wont get filled with reclaim and this should increase that air flow even more. what you guys think about this?

Has anyone used their hopper with rosin yet? Seen a video on YouTube and old mateys wraps it in cotton and dabs away, thinking it might be messy? Also has anyone heard a ticking noise from the hopper ?mine does! Thinking it's just the heater.. Any ideas?

Sorry for the double post!

My post did say it only happened twice while 8 of us were using it as a non stop dab machine on 5. Took a few more than 3 hits, and by a few, I mean like 10. Again, it's a feature not an issue. Not even worried about it. Not usually passing it around that much. Was just showing it off. If anything it impressed me. I got 8 of us high as fuck off of one battery and two hopper loads with some oil.. Oh, in like 5ish minutes also.

@Averyminya, I think you just need to try harder... Hahaha

@I.b.vaping , I've used oil a bit, it gets the mouthpiece a bit sticky, but nothing some daily ISO swabbing won't fix. I just pack it between bud. It's not rosin, but it's all pretty close. Mine is in wax form ATM. I just fill 1/3 with bud, put in a pancake, top off 2/3 with bud. I put more on the bottom cuz I use it on a bong and figure it's all gonna melt downwards. So many huge hitting rips this way. I leave it on 5 and if alone click off half way thru the hit to cool it all down. I've been happy with this method. The bud goes before the oil but doesn't have the popcorn taste as rapidly. OK enough talk, I'm going to go do this now..

While you have a dab have a listen to your hopper, can you hear ticking?

what do you mean by this? i also changed from SS to Ti in my pre-order. order ID number didn't changed by doing so, nor did the estimate delivery date. confused... :suspicious:

@I.b.vaping that ticking sound is normal. many people have reopened that. maybe because of this sound it is called a GrassHopper?

Apologies if this has been mentioned already but couldn't find anything that compared the vapour quality (in particular dryness / heat) from the GH in comparison to the miniVAP.

VERY tempted to hit the button and pick up one of these GH's but have been told the vapour is actually hotter and dryer than the miniVAP if you are hitting that dry and at similar temps.

Personally I find the miniVAP too hot to hit dry and so I am thinking the GH may not be the best choice for me but boy am I tempted with all these reviews! I feel like I am missing out on something! Stealth is not really a factor for me as I only ever home vape.

I use a Mighty 99% of the time but am on the 4th unit now and that just gave up the ghost too so back to S&B on that one - thinking I may invest in a GH as a backup!

Let me know if anyone has been able to compare the miniVAP against the GH please that would be really helpful (I am assuming the vapour from the Mighty is a lot cooler owing to the CU).

Thanks!

just connect that Mighty cooling unit to Hopper, and hit it man! or do it trough a water bong. this shouldn't be a trouble for your home-only vaporizing habits.

It has been pointed out earlier in this thread that you can insert a GH into the s&b cooling unit inlet and it has been confirmed to cool the vapor considerably (just have to pop out the CU screen). And if you send your mighty back for warranty, they tell you not to worry about returning the CU. So you will still have it.

Alternatively if you're sick of the warranty process (because if this thread is any indication, you will be dealing with warranty claims at some point) then maybe consider an arizer solo. Mine has been rock solid for years and boy have I punished it! (Any solo user will attest to that).
But another solo user just got his GH and he reckons the GH vapor production is better, which i don't doubt, after seeing vids .

Just putting the options on the table. :2c:

I'm patiently awaiting my preorder :peace:

Thanks very much for all the feedback guys.

I am fully open to pairing the GH with a water tool from what I am reading it sounds like that would be the only option to avoid hot lips and lungs!

As this would be for home use only looks like I am going to be pairing the GH with a WT then and not hitting it dry so at the end of the day there would be v little difference between the GH and miniVAP except for the fact that the battery in the MV would actually last a lot longer!

What I am doing is trying to talk myself into buying a GH but I am not doing a v good job at it!

i had a opposite problem. i tried to find excuses for not to buy a Hopper. thought i have my beloved Solo for chilling sessions. have a Volcano for group activities, and heavy hitter Sublimator for a heavy duty purposes. but then,.... Hopper got it all! when you think about it. you can do a session with small low temp hits, or rip whole bowl at once trough a bong. + 5 sec (this is hundred and more times faster then setting up a Sublimator) heating time and unmatched stealth. and at this price point. i mean... couldn't find any excuses for not to buy it.

Just one opinion from someone who mostly uses the GH as a one hitter on temp 4: hot lips, not even an issue. Hot throat and lungs- definitely. You can mitigate that somewhat by breaking up a hit with sips of fresh air, but if I'm using it at home, I prefer going through water. I just have a little hammer type bubbler, and it makes a huge difference. With the condom, the GH seals on it just fine.
