Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

i am still in the dark about all this fancy folding. I just fold in half, fold the edge closest to the fulcrum over and squish. If someone could enlighten me (preferably visually) I would be greatly appreciative

Had an insanely busy weekend. Got to appear on Hash Church episode 72 and talk to Bubbleman, Etienne, Mark Scialdone, Skunkman Sam, and others about vaporizers and materials safety.



Ran out of rosin and pressed some up with my super basic 600lb irwin clamp after I was off the air! Cookies and creme bubble hash inside a filter

i watched some videos and the setup seems pretty simple. But what is the process for adding heat/temperature setting to this machine?

Hey guys, I've started dabbling with making my own rosin, I followed this thread when it was originally posted but haven't kept up, I have a few questions but first wanted to find a FAQ or some kind of troubleshooting info. I love how much has been developed and discovered over the year or so that this thread has existed!

Basically, the few buds I've pressed have yielded noticeable and visible oil but I can't seem to collect it, it becomes a sheen on the parchment paper. I've tried freezing it for a bit to see if that helps, no dice. Sadly, the hair iron I have only starts at 300 which I suspect is a contributor, I need something that can run cooler right?

edit: because I certainly have nothing more important to do at work than read this thread from the start again, found this from @Quetzalcoatl

In my case I'm gonna guess it's the long (~8-10sec) press time that led to my rosin paper :(

My current iron starts around 300f as well, I usually let it just get up to temp then turn it off and wait 15-20s, then press with 2 layers of parchment for extra insulation. I was clamping a meat thermometer while it warmed up to regulate the temp, but found it a PITA and this worked for me lol..

haha dake 10's comin out of the woodwork. I just got mine too. works great. at first I just used the same plywood discs I was using with my c-clamps. Magnets hold steel plates to wood disc, and magnets hold top wood disc to press ram.

Sadly, my plywood insulator/holders were no match for the press and they basically compressed to the point where all internal screws and magnets were the only thing maintaining size. Pressed them up to 5 tons (~3000psi). After the 3rd run the wood no longer expanded back after so I will need to rethink my attachment and insulation scheme. But theres something awesome about seeing the wood expand like a sponge when you release the valve on the first few crushes :)


anybody else squeezing what seems like a lot of greenish/yellow liquid through the parchment? It is simply left on the metal plates afterwards. Interestingly doesn't smell like rosin oil at all... could it be some weird chlorophyl mixture? Or possibly even quillion being forced out of the parchment? msds says quillion out of suspension is green....

oh yea and absolutely no parchment tearing even though my plywood crushed. I believe my tearing with the c-clamp was more induced from twisting the top rather than pressure.

Not sure how big you plates are but I use 1/2" plywood with a 3/8" hole in the middle. Then cut a half inch long chunk of 3/8" bolt and stuff it in the hole. This will keep it from over crushing the plywood and still not transfer much heat into the press.

Too much pressure will push oil through the paper. Usually from a stem I'd bet and you may not see the hole.

My plates are 2.5" diameter rounds. my plywood bits were around 2.25" diameter and press ram is 2" diameter.

great idea re: bolt inside. but then I guess all pressure is coming from the bolt, wonder if that could deform my plates or ram press more easily? I know your plates are way thicker than my 1/2" ones so I'm sure yours handle it with no sweat.

I am also wondering if it might work well to use a thicker piece of aluminum as the top piece and then just use a piece of oil slick pad as an insulator? Will have to either get bigger magnets or tap my plates.

yea I tried a strip of oak last night. It just started to crush at around 2.5 tons, and total devastation at 5-6 tons.

ram has area of 3.14" sq in, so that means the oak couldn't really handle psi over 3000.

Of course I have no clue how accurate the gauge on my press is. I was a bit curious how it functions correctly since there is no avoiding some air remaining underneath the gauge when screwing it in. I guess that tiny bit of air is normal and just compresses?

from some website, white oak has a compressibility between 7400 and 1000 psi depending on if pressure is applied parallel or perpendicular to the grain. and of course there is always variability with any species.

Mine was perpendicular to the grain... and if it started to compress around 2 tons that is right around 1200psi... haha nice (matches the website closely for my non-recorded observations). not parallel like a butchers block. So I suppose I will try a butchers block style chunk next. could be up to 7x stronger which may be just enough.

Greetings fellow squishers!

I know I have been scarce around these parts lately, but I thought I'd return with some more findings during my squishing.

Many of you know I love to squish me some hash. I also like to squish flowers.

What I love most is dab sundaes - dipping rosin into full melt.

Now sometimes, a run of bubble doesn't work out so much full melt (full melt yields are cruel) and I need something that gives me that same full flavor and effect.

I get really frustrated over hash squishing blowouts because my squish machine has the capacity to exert way too much pressure for squishing my hash pucks.

So it dawned on me - why not do something similar to what many of us (like my friend @Hashtag46&2) like to do with our flower vapes - mix flower and hash.

Here's what I did.

Grabbed two small calyxes of nug (I find it best to use slightly less than you usually use for flower squishes) and found a nook in the nug to place a ball of hash (really whatever size you can securely place inside the nug will do).

Then I pre-squished the nug (by hand is what I like to do, but wearing a glove - don't put your skin oils into the rosin! ;) ) so that the hash is firmly squished inside the nug, this will prevent blowouts where the hash bursts out of the nug into the errl.

Now squish the nug as you would usually. I prefer the technique I outlined a ways back for folding the parchment - use your favorite folding style.

I have found the resulting rosin to approach the quality of the genuine dab sundae article!

Hope some of you guys enjoy this one, it's been great fun for me today ;)

Great technique, @herbivore21 . I've placed trim bin collections, kief out of my grinder and kief box, and low grade bubble between two thin pucks I made of of somewhat moist and sticky trim with my pollen press and it works great!

Definitely a good idea to mix like with like in terms of quality when doing this, like Samuraisam and I both have done in our examples:

If you are using top quality hash, I would only mix it with top quality bud. Similarly if you are using lower quality, more contaminant filled hash, mix it with trim or lower grade nugs!

Holy shit, your mention of using trim to this end gave me an idea. I will report back after testing that the concept works! It may not though...

I know it completely changed my entire perspective of Cannabis in general.

Realizing the majestic quality of the unaltered Glandular Head is profoundly the ultimate destination in the Holy grail of Concentrates.

Dry Sieving is my next endeavor.

As you say, the yield of obtaining true Full Melt is brutal, as in the 1-5% return.

But.... Soooo worth it IMHO.

Adding in the ability to squish lesser quality hash, boosts the overall yield.

Which used to be the basis of the Solvent vs No chemical Solvent debate...

Yields.

IMO.. The yield argument is now moot.

Quality over quantity is the Motto of the Cannaisseur.

Definitely my brother @Hashtag46&2 , it sure it a game changer! The first time you drop hash on a nail and watch it melt to nothing is really unmatched! A truly great moment!

I agree that the glands mechanically filtered off the nug IME are the best so far, better than high purity THCA, better than rosin, better than the best solvent extracts. The yields do suck though, it definitely is only for the true cannabis afficianado who will not compromise on quality to the point of sacrificing significant yields.

Sadly, Dry Sift requires more flower than I can accumulate, so I cannot try my hand until times are more permitting. I would love to do so one day! Make sure you take some pics my brother!

I agree, to me the only reason solvent tek can be justified now is if you can do some of that insane shit like what xtractology are currently doing in Cali to get 11%+ terp concentrations in BHO! Still, the only benefit of this over rosin is that it is much less hands on effort to produce in large batches.

Rosin tek appears to have forced the market to largely go the way that it IMO should have gone all along for safety reasons - small personal home production is more practical, convenient and high quality when one uses rosin tek generally speaking. However, some benefits can still be had with solvents but mostly in larger scale production (dispensaries etc). The only reason I retain solvent teks in some very few cases now is for winterizing.

I am loving squishing hash inside nugs, it truly is something else! No blowouts and an excellent, easy way to get the goods out of your lesser hashes! :D

Started trying out the Rosin techique this week. I've known about it for some time, but I didn't really have the tools or spare flowers to try it. Wow, I wished I had done this sooner :)

I purchased a hair iron in the week. I should have done more research though as the surface area is a little small, and the lowest temperature that I can use is 300'F. Having said that, I've still had pretty good results. I'm finding the best results are had by placing a foot on the irons, I guess my arms aren't strong enough :)

So far the best yielder has been a nice cut of Neville's Haze, which is cool as I wasn't a huge fan of the strain. Ghost Train Haze (which was very frosty), was a close second, and the resulting dab produced a lovely lovely high. I also squished some Critical Jack, but the returns were non existance.

I'm finding the consistency of the concentrates to be quite interesting. Even at the same temp, the strains produce different consistency. The Ghost is very sticky and quite oily, whereas Neville's Rosin is very much like shatter.

I don't have access to quality concentrates, I've had crappy Sour Haze BHO before, but this is another league. Looking forward to experimenting with other strains!

i'm purchasing a set of heated platens separately. in the meantime i'll continue to use my steel bricks heated on an electric burner.

glad to hear other folks are happy with their DAKE 10 tons! i'm assembling mine today :D:D:D

did you hear extractioneering talk on hash church 72 @herbivore21 ? that high terpene extract sounds sketchy as hell lol. i'll stick with solventless for now.

i'll be getting terpene analysis on my trim rosin in a few weeks when the lab i've been working with starts offering the service. i have a feeling that properly squished flower/trim rosin will have impressive terpene content. i'm not sure it can compete with that liquid solvent extract, but it won't have 100ppm of residual butane either.

i made some very melty gumby hash a couple weeks ago. i was pleased considering i haven't done the process in a couple years and i was working with dry trim. fresh frozen has always come out the cleanest in the past, but i got a good tip from bubbleman about a quick rinse in a 45 bag to remove the fines first that i'll try next time i run dry herb.

second wash fused heads (unpressed)

I really need to find me a freeze drying machine, already got the cash so it is just a matter of finding the right machine for the job. Might speak to Bubbleman myself and get in touch with Tony V.

Can't wait to see your trim run terp COA by the way man! So jealous that you have access to these facilities!

I haven't yet seen extractioneering on hash church 73, only watched like half an hour of it so far. Talk about the best hash church ever was great to see Frenchy there too!!!!!!!!!!

What extractioneering is doing with solvents can be done without solvents using different methods (not methods that will be carried out in the home - but to be fair a lot of what extractioneering is doing shouldn't be done at home either!). Extractioneering is doing some great work, a few of his posts about how things should be communicated strike me as overstatements of arguments (but exactly the same kinds my passionate academic peers and probably even myself make here and there too! None of us are perfect!), but his work is sound as fuck and that man is doing great things!
