Discontinued The Grasshopper

I'm getting the i2 for my 3 batteries. I like the option of being able to charge one battery at a time, which you can't do in the i4 without potentially damaging the battery.

From the i4 manual:

"When charging a single battery in the I4, the charging current can reach as high as 750mA, which exceeds the current many Ni-MH/Ni-Cd AAA and 10440 Li-ion batteries can withstand. For this reason, under no circumstances should a single AAA or 10440 battery be charged on its own, as potential overheating, damage or even explosion may occur."

Explosion is not something I want to risk when stoned haha - especially when it comes to these rare Hopper batteries!
Just to point out: the hopper batteries have 750ma printed on them. Ive used the d4 to charge one battery many times so far without incident. The d4 charges up to two batteries at 750ma each, and 3-4 at 375ma each. When charging at 750ma the batteries don't warm up at all. YMMV

Before I say anything I would like to thank @jojo0420.
Thanks to him I am now the proud owner of a Grasshopper.
I am no longer a long time lurker! I thought this day would never come!

As a GH owner of an hour now I wanted to give you guys my initial thoughts and impressions.:sherlock:

I have a SS hopper in the #1200s.
The GH seems extremely well made and it's just a dam nice vaporizer.
You can tell a ton of work went into the GH and the attention to detail and specs is impressive.
My unit works great, I only used it at temp 3 but no hot back end.
The taste is delicious and it is very efficient on herb.
I got 12 draws now from a 1/2-3/4 chamber.
The vapor wasn't insane but it was very present, I want the taste more than I want the vapor.
Heats up between 2-5 seconds.
I have no complaints as of yet.

So far so good. I will keep all informed whether my Hopper is working or not just so everyone knows from square one how my SS Hopper is holding up and how long it lasts before needing surgery (hopefully not for a long time).

All in all I am 100% happy with the hopper and extremely grateful to @jojo0420 for helping a fellow FC member out.:)

The quote he did was the one I forgot to post from the I4 manual. I wonder if it's a difference between the two.

Note about my batteries, the two old ones charge 25 minutes faster than my new ones, even with both of them started charging at the same time, with being finished off at 5. That said, the old batteries still are performing very well off the charger.

I just checked the d4 manual and it seems there's no problem charging just one battery. Only the i4 has that warning so there does seem to be a difference.

I've charged my batteries with my xtar vc4 many times with 1000mA or 500mA and had no problem. But when they are fully charged, the charger displays around 500 - 550 mAh, not the 750mAh the battery should have. Anybody else had this observation?

not with Hopper batteries. i don't have them jet. Xtar show less mAh on my AA and e-cig mod batteries as well. difference is about 10%. so two possibilities- ether Xtars are not measuring correctly or all battery producers are printing higher numbers on their product than actual capacity.

The vapor wasn't insane but it was very present, I want the taste more than I want the vapor.

I've noticed this as well, the flavour is alot better than I expected! However, I remember the vapour output being much higher with my defective GH. Sometimes I think i'm pulling too fast, other times too slow, and not getting very consistent results.... just a bit of a learning curve I suppose, but i'm not getting the massive dragon clouds like I experienced before. With all this testing (4 batteries), I feel like i'm just flying through the batteries every 2 bowls, which isn't terrible, but having replaceable batteries seems like a double edged sword (coming from Crafty).

The heatup speed just puts a smile on my face every time, but my unit can get scorching HOT! Not just the backend (which at one point made my wife scream! Giggity!) but the entire body and front end too (I have to use the silicone).... but this depends on (protracted) usage. The short vapour path does make the vapour hot, compared to the CU of crafty/mighty.

Tried the CU mod, and is surely does make a huge difference, but not something I would do regularily. If I want to use a CU, it will be with a Crafty or mighty attached.

So far the GH is exactly like everyone said it would be! I just can't seem to get it to milk up glass like before, but that could be strain, grind, etc. The important thing is that the ABV is perfect and very even!

With my Eneloop AA's and AAA's the xtar displays higher mAh after charging from empty to full than the Eneloops should have (I think the capacity printed in the Eneloops is the minimum capacity) So I trust the xtar shows the right loaded capacity.
Maybe the GH starts blinking red although the battery isn't fully drained or the xtar's displayed capacity isn't accurate with Li-Ion batteries.

This seems odd to me. Even 3-4 back to back hits on 5 my body, nor the backend, get hot in the way you described...

I think i'm torture testing alot more than that....when you say back to back hits, are you clicking it off between? Because when I power hit it, it gets really fucking hot! I wish I could measure it. Either way, it will bother some and not others. But it definitely gets HOT.

I'm with biohacker. If I leave it on, set it to 5 and take 6 big hits in a row, both ends get pretty warm. Doesn't bother me, but its noticeable and I can see how some may not like it. So far seems to work okay. I get about 3 packs per battery on average. Still young though so who knows..

Exactly, it bothers my wife but no big deal for me, and I know that *I* cause it by doing multiple back to back hits on 5, or use a water tool. I don't think that's how it's designed to work, which is why i'm starting to think that this vape isn't for me, as awesome as it is. And it is awesome.

Starting to realize how different vapes are suitable for different people. Doesn't mean that they are better or worse, just everyone has the right vape for their specific needs. I realize that a Cooling Unit is HUGE for me, if i'm not going through a water tool. Not sure I can vape dry without it.

Have you tried a knock-off portable water tool from dhgate? (like the pinnacle pro one)

I'm more of a one hitter quitter, but if you want to take several back to back hits, why would you not just turn it off and wait a few seconds between them? Especially since it heats back up almost instantly?

The vapor itself is going to be on the hot side no matter what, but the body getting painfully hot seems easily avoidable.

Just did 2 bowls, one dry and one through water..... 3.5 and 5 respectively.... wife tried .75 ramped up to 2ish...........

GAME. CHANGER. Without question!

I'll sure to be back with impressions, but i'm off to enjoy the GH in the sunny weather!

You know what the impressions are anyway!

THANK YOU GHL!!!!!! :rockon::tup::clap::nod:

This is what I mean when I make my "Saab vs. Toyota analogy" Even people who test drive a Saab and decide it's not for them for whatever reason still come back from the test drive impressed with a smile, even if they then buy a Toyota, they still dream about that Saab.

The GH seems extremely well made and it's just a dam nice vaporizer.
You can tell a ton of work went into the GH and the attention to detail and specs is impressive.

Of my vapes, GH is definitely the highest build quality, followed by Firefly and pax2 in the next teir. I would say the mivape and the Elo made a sacrifice in "chassis" to invest in horsepower. The right compromise in my opinion but for those who don't want to sacrifice trim for speed, then you have to wait for the slow shipment of the grasshopper but WORTH IT!

I've noticed this as well, the flavour is alot better than I expected! However, I remember the vapour output being much higher with my defective GH.

The first rip on a Grasshopper on temp 3, not sure flavor gets better than that ... I've been looking for better, I've found "differnt" but not better!

I just can't seem to get it to milk up glass like before, but that could be strain, grind, etc.

Coming from an absolute FAN Boy who knows from being at HL that QC issues are much improved due to new equipment, I have to say I think yours may work but is probably defective.

This seems odd to me. Even 3-4 back to back hits on 5 my body, nor the backend, get hot in the way you described...

Because I think it may also have some defect, doesn't hurt to ask.

@biohacker I thought I got your last quote in about this vape "not being for you" and meant to add it because YES as a total fan boy who thinks everyone should have this vape in their collection and if you only have one it should be GH, you give exactly the reasons this "Saab" may not be
for you.

It is really designed to be optionally used as a personal, discrete "one hitter" Like the old dugouts I never clear a grasshopper in one hit but bear with me.

I wanted to reply to all those quotes to tell this story of 3 vapes.

Yesterday was my birthday. Before the grasshopper I had a pax which I liked, a firefly which I thought I loved until the grasshopper taught me how to love a vape. Since July when I got my GH, I have gone from 90% smoke with vaping really being an at home novelty to the exact opposite.

Something unexpected happened when I moved to Boulder 14 years ago, which is finding my new home created an unexpected urge to travel. Similarly, ever since I got the grasshopper, because I love it so much I oddly seek better.

So it being my birthday I went a little indulgent with respect to vapes and decided to order a desktop for my party Saturday (I don't think a grasshopper is party vape unless it's a party where everyone has one, I think the grasshopper is versatile and useable in a group but for a party I think a desktop is the right tool for the gig). I also ordered another new portable I found interesting.

The vivape2 so far is a fine desktop and considering it only cost $169 and even better that it was a gift make it totally worth it. I think it will serve well at my party, great flavor, great efficiency and no learning curve or explaining.

Now is the flavor "better" than GH? No, I'd say differnt. Cooler, more consistent over draws but I I would say in terms of complexity and interesting flavors, still can't beat that first grasshopper draw and since I'm high two draws from either, most times I'm going to go grasshopper and save the vivape2 for parties. It's certainly a product I'm glad to have in my collection.

It was also a refresher in the industry. I like vaporfection, this is my second device from them. I have a mivape which again, I'm glad to have in my collection, it's great for bowls of flower mixed with concentrate but definitely in my b-squad. I also ordered an aqua-vape which for whatever reason is arriving tomorrow. Good thing since the glass mouthpiece already broke. I'm not suggesting either is Vaporfection's "fault" per se. I'm just imaging the outrage on this thread if grasshopper had shipped items seperatley and a component broke in what was a trifle, the mouthpiece shouldn't have broken just being set down on the table but that is the nature of blown glass, if you hit it in just the right spot BLAAMO. And I can use the house just fine for now. My point being is that in terms of my customer experience with Vaporfection and investor backed, established company with two products on the market, both of which I own and enjoy, my experience with nascent, crowd sourced grasshopper has been better. As it stands now I have to flawless grasshoppers where two mouthpieces in for the mivape I have two functional but someone messed up vaporfection products.

More importantly I prefer the grasshopper product to the vaporfection products which enjoyment is a pretty important feature.

I also got the Elo. It's an interesting concept and at $130 it was worth the experiment. It's not to say that I love it or hate it, it's to say if you can't tell you don't love it. When folks talk about a functioning grasshopper they love it or hate but they are SURE! When folks complain about it it's usually because, whether they know it or not it's malfunctioning in some way.

I don't think my Elo is defective. The experience I'm
having, great flavor and effect little to no clouds, seems consistent with others as well as the battery life etc. The point being is if I can't tell that it's working when it's working then I probably don't like it that much.

I think Elo would make a great first vape if they keep that price or for a very light user, but so far it's not for me.

What the Elo did however was put the grasshopper in perspective.

Loading: I liked the chip idea because reading threads about the GH made me forget about rolling joints or loading bowls and had me convinced that loading the grasshopper is a pain in the ass. You know what's really a pain in the ass? Loading chips only to have the battery you can't swap or charge in the car or use while driving dies.

Turns out, when driving to Denver with a dead Elo, taking a pinch off of a bud and dropping it the grasshopper taking some delicious hits, no grinding needed and then just ripping it while it's on the USB charger that works great in the car doesn't seem so bad!

I know admitting to being fanboy reduces my credability which it should, I take all zealots with a grain of salt but without having tried the Crafty for flavor and not having tried Firefly 2 yet, the grasshoppers lead on best vape seems to increase with every other portable I try.

Only the Firefly can match the instant convection heating but lacks temp control (which I don't care about although temp stepping is a feature of GH I use almost every bowl) so maybe FF2 might be a competitor with its new size but as for now I don't think one can do better than grasshopper and it will be worth the wait.

This tiny little device that feels super solid and delivers flavors and clouds almost instantly with no learning curve, replaceable rechargeable batteries hay can be used on the charger!

I did. I did it both ways....click on and off, as well as continuous power chain hit. It's what testing is all about!

The vapor itself is going to be on the hot side no matter what, but the body getting painfully hot seems easily avoidable.

You're right!

For me, this thread, as long as it is, and considering how passionate we HopperHeads are, is just about perfect. Let's weave this thread (think 'warp' & 'weft'), into a magnificent tapestry of Hoppertudeness.

Normally I do take hit, turn it off until I want another (anywhere from 2 minutes to 30.). However, even if I take three hits in a row without turning it off it doesn't get hot in the way you described. Maybe she just has a low pain tolerance

I will say every now and then on my old units I'd notice if my hand was touching the seam between the backend and the body, I'd get a heat-shock. Not electric, but very hot. This hasn't happened since my replacement though.

Test science happily! :D

OK.
Day 2 results SS Hopper #12XX:

-SS Hopper still working great.
-Zero hot back end issues. Not even a little. The back end seems cooler then the body. Clicker very tight and responsive.
-Averaging 8-12 draws per 3/4 fluffy packed chambers depending on my draw length.
-Still only using temp 3, MP gets hot during 3rd draw if having a session. Need tip cover if taking more than 3 draws in a row, single session, leaving the hopper on.
-Seem to average 2 chambers per battery, I have 3 in rotation all seem to act and charge the same through nitecore I4 charger.
-I also tried clicking it off after each draw and continuing to draw 3-4 seconds to get the heat out of the oven. This method keeps MP much cooler but I feel get less hits off a battery, I assume it's because the heater has to fully heat up each time (waiting 30 seconds to 1 minute in between draws).
-Lights are hard to see outside in the sun, seems like only one LED shines light out of 3 holes on mine.
-I am 12 chambers in so far and all is well.

Back to testing...:sherlock:

@Thcgos Ive married a vapor brothers mouthpiece for their wax pen to the grasshopper to great success. It's a very durable mouthpiece I think they say it's glass. It worked very nicely at higher temps. You hold it on top just like crafty CU
