So not long ago, while discussing the merits of the Pro model (I like the battery meter more than variable temperatures) I brashly said:

I really like the format of the Mini more I think. Small/lighter and the ability to charge from USB ports are big advantages IMO. But no battery meter. When the Mini Pro comes out I'll probably get one for the meter function alone and retire my well used Mini to standby duty.

@OF: Glad you made the move, and even before I did any review on top of that! But let's be honnest, we all know my review will be as good if not better than for the previous models, as this is somehow a step up version of the Mini and they are not taking big risks on this one.

I'm still in the burn-ins phase... as I got already plenty of devices to use daily, it's taking longer than if this was my only vape obviously! But I can still do a pre-review:

KZ's FlowerMate V5.0 Mini Pro pre-review

First I would like to thank Amy @ Smiss who is always there to answer my numerous questions, and who gave me once again the chance to test one of their products in advance. The usual disclaimer applies here: I did not pay for this sample unit but I have strictly no vested interest in the company and I will do my best to be as unbiased as possible, even if it's against human nature (we're full of biases)

You should know by now after the FM8 reviews in particular that if I don't like something, I will say it clearly. So far I got almost nothing negative to say about this new model, and at least nothing that didn't apply already to the entire FM5 range.

The device I got is not a beta version, it's from the first production run, meaning what you see is what you get!

Packaging and contents

I've always been impressed by the quality of the packaging of Smiss devices, especially when you consider that they are all in the lower end of the price spectrum. It gives a premium product impression. This time it's even better: the top part of the box is slightly folded, origami-style, creating a shape similar to the "K" on the infamous white and red cigarette brand.

JZf2WGR.png

The print is gorgeous, with many layers including shiny and metallic overlays. There is a scratch code to deter counterfeiting. Smiss name doesn't appear anywhere on the box, only FlowerMate Technology LLC and the FlowerMateUSA site URL. Interestingly it reads: "Designed in California USA, Assembled in China". This should remind something to the users of the well known fruit brand. :p

I don't know whether they really have a R&D office in California or not, but I can't find any error in the english text (no more "engrish" like we see often coming from China) Those are small details I know, but they add up to give a good impression instead of a sloppy one.

The package contents are:
- V5.0S Mini Pro Vaporizer - yes @OF, once again the naming scheme is almost hilarious, it's got everything, the V the S... haha, I suggest that we call it just the Mini Pro from now on it's simpler.
- Borosilicate glass mouthpiece - smaller base-piece and easier to clean than the V5 one, as noted previously the Mini mouthpiece fits on the larger versions but not the inverse.
- Water pipe adapter - a nice chunky piece of machined metal with one side that you can screw at either end... I won't be able to test it unfortunately, I hit all my vapes dry.
- Liquid / waxy chamber - filled with organic cotton, small metal capsule with screwable lid, very fne machining, again I surely won't test it anytime soon but it looks very interesting if it works.
- Medium stainless steel pod - another finely machined metal capsule with screwable lid, this one I will test to see if it keeps the bowl cleaner.
- 5 stainless steel screens (that's 2+1 already in place for the mouthpiece and 3 for the bottom of the bowl, my bowl had no screen inserted when I got it.
- Packing tool and dabber - super useful to tamp the load if you do the "puck technique" like me.
- Cleaning brush - same model as all chinese vapes.
- USB charging cable - very nice cable made of soft silicone and not your usual PVC, it should greatly reduce the wear and tear near the plugs and it's conveniently small to carry in your pocket.
- Warranty card, user manual - 20 pages color printed, quite substantial and complete, explains everything including the adapter and capsules.

There is also a "special note" card telling to insert a stainless steel screen into the ceramic heating chamber before using. I didn't and I still don't know if I will. The 5 holes in the ceramic bowl can be poked with a needle from the top if ever they clog. That being said the screen has never been a problem in my other FM5's... I'll decide later what I do.

Last but not least, the manual says that the device has a 1800mAh cell. This is a bit strange considering that others in the range are advertized having 2600mAh ones (most likely 2500 in reality, given what cells are on the market today) It's even stranger when you compute that 29.4W is only 7A at 4.2V (fully charged) and still under 10A at 3V, well below what good recent IMR cells can handle (for instance the Samsung 25R can do 20A continuous and is 2500mAh, same for LG HE2)

Physical inspection

This model is in direct competition with single cell vaporizers that are not "pen style" or "ecig" looking, including the S&B Crafty, Goboof Alfa, Pax 1&2, Herbstick Deluxe, etc. It's a very interesting form factor but it's the worst for the battery as the scorching hot bowl lies litterally next to the cell (and Li-Ions just hate high temperatures) The manual clearly states that and warns that battery capacity will go down over time. Here is a picture showing the Mini Pro, the 5-Pro, the Herbstick Deluxe, the Herbstick Eco and a 18650 Li-Ion cell for size reference:

RZ3YRVe.png

The device itself is really cute. The OLED screen is gorgeous and not too bright, it gives a futuristic look. Tolerances are very tight, there's no play in the screen cover and very little wobble on the buttons. The logo and "V5.0 mini pro" are silk-screened on a single side of the aluminium shell (the word "flowermate" doesn't appear and thanksfully the "leaf" that was on the first V5 is long gone!) Overall it gives the impression of a premium product. There are just a few minor issues though:

- The sliding doors were a bit loose and this makes them feel cheap. I had to firmly pinch with my fingers the protruding lip of the aluminium shell to bend it ever slightly, making the doors harder to move, like in my other FM5's.
- I find that the mouthpiece rattles more when stored than in the bigger versions, there is more play making it somewhat noisier when you shake it. It could be easily fixed by inserting a piece of tissue in the storage compartment (but you would have to remove it as it's also where fresh air enters when in use) I don't think I will bother, but if you need to be stealthy and say pass the device as a mp3 player or something during a security check, the rattle could raise some suspicions.
-The device being smaller, I found that it is easier to burn your fingers on the mouthpiece metal base (that reads "caution hot") You have to be careful when holding it and don't forget to warn people when you pass it around or they could drop it out of surprise!
- The buttons have no marking on them, so you have to figure which is + and which is -, but it's not a big deal once you know it.

Air and vapor paths

They claim "fully isolated air path" and "medical grade materials" in the manual so what do we got in practice? Well, it appears it has been improved over the V, 5-S and 5-Pro units that I have got. Not that it was bad in the previous models, but if you recall, the electronics section was not completely isolated: air entered mostly through the holes on the shell sides, following path of least resistance, but still a minute amount could theoretically come from the innards.

In the Mini Pro the bottom of the bowl communicates directly with the storage compartment down below, and not even with the side holes. When the storage lid is left open, you got a big tunnel for air to enter at the bottom of the device and directly into the 5 holes of the ceramic bowl. Now there is a minute gap in the hole from which the two pairs of wires (clear silicone sleeved) pass to reach the heater element and temperature probe (a few milimeters are exposed) but honnestly, this gap is so small in comparison to the wide open air entrance that we can safely consider that no air can be drawn from the electronics section.

The materials in the air path are: plastic from the tunnel / storage compartment, a few milimeters of silicone sleeved wires, and there's a silicone joint covering part of the ceramic bowl bottom. All of which should be safe at those temperatures and I couldn't detect any smell here.

When my friend got his 5-Pro recently he said he couldn't smell any new device smell, and then my Smiss contact confirmed that they sourced a different polyimide tape, solving the problem for those with a sensitive nose like me. I must say that indeed, it's way better: the new device smell is less intrusive and way more pleasant, it almost smells sweet. But to say it's completely gone would be a lie. This is why I'm still doing the empty burn-ins at max temperature while blowing as often as possible in the device (you need air movement)

This is time consuming. For my 5-S and 5-Pro it required two complete discharges worth of burn-ins, so roughly 2h20 or more with fresh cells out of the box. The battery life on this one being more limited (there's no magic, single cell devices are all in the 30-45 min range vs 1h-1h20 for dual cells) I think you need at least 3 complete discharges to eliminate the smell. I've done 2 already and I really have to shove my nose into the holes on the side to detect it. If you don't have the patience I have, I'm pretty sure that the smell would be covered after a single use with the Plant inside though. Taste would only improve over time, say over the first 3 hours of use.

For the vapor path we got: ceramic bowl, silicone insulation ring above the bowl, then the mouthpiece (metal, silicone holder, glass) All silicone pieces are of the clear kind and I couldn't detect any smell. The only smell there is comes from the polyimide tape around the bowl, and it's not even directly exposed to the air and vapor paths.

This concludes my pre-review. I haven't used the device really so far, I will make a follow up to review vapor quality and quantity, as well as usage impressions once it enters my daily rotation.

Spot on. FM has been around the track a few times before. No new ground being covered here, really. At the least I expect the latest oven configuration and the features of the Pro. No drama, hopefully evolution (but certainly not going backward).

Thanks as ever for your concise and well thought out reviews. Good perspectives, IMO.

I'm new to dry herb vaping and bought the Mini Pro V.50 S. It seems I get no clouds below 400F. Is that normal? I'm vaping at 411F as my regular go to setting now. Is it still working at the lower temps even if there are no clouds? I also find I get maybe 5 five minutes sessions at the 411F temp. It takes about an hour to hour and a half to charge. I also noticed that the unit feels warm to hot to hold when vaping. Was a bit disturbed when I saw the two wires and plastic underneath the ceramic bowl where the mouth piece is stored but found out that's the way it's constructed based on other folks analysis here. Sorry i sound so skittish, getting used to this whole vaping dry herb thing. Was used to vaping oils prior to this. Do you folks load the ceramic bowl completely prior to a session or half way? I've been doing half way. Thanks!

I have the standard pro and get decent clouds at around 380 ...ground herbs and a loose pack help also...replace the mp screen w the titanium screens or cut a standard screen to fit in there... or poke a couple pin holes in them(stock screen)..you can remove the screen entirely but you would be cleaning the mp after every session...long slow draws..and you should get good results

Meach, You are absolutely right about that. Thanks for helping out a newbie. I did cut it down to 380F and followed your packing instructions. Flowermate USA also has awesome customer service and helped me out too. They found out I was leaving the bottom open which also will cut down on battery life significantly. I closed the bottom door. Set it to 380F and got some clouds and good battery life. Also, weed has tasted good at all the settings I tried it with on the Mini Pro.

So, the awfully sudden time has come. On an *really* inebriated impulse yesterday, upon seeing they were on sale, I ordered a firewood 3. I have a strong feeling that it'll replace my flowermate entirely. I'm going to throw it up on the classifieds most likely. So I asked in the chat, and got a few answers, and read the thread on cleaning in the classifieds. I just don't know how far I should clean my flowermate before shipping. I'm going to clean the stem, and iso q-tip out the oven, but is there anything else that needs to be done?

@arielheart no problem..I don't bump it to the 400 range until the second round..I usually do one session at 350 for the first few hits for flavor then go to 380 ...After the timer shuts off I start it up again at 410 to finish off the bowl

Very cool! I like the 380 setting very much. How much weed do you usually put your bowls?

I've been enjoying my Mini Pro since PIU once again got it in my hands in less than 48 hours after ordering.....

However, I'm questioning the battery indicator function (the very reason I wanted the Pro.....). It seemed to be doing well, lots of sessions had left me with 2/4 bars. I started a session and noticed it was now one bar. When that session timed out (or may have cut out for low battery?) it would not heat up for another 5 minutes on that load. One session?

So I put it on charge and checked the recharge. It took 1919mAh, starting out at .78 Amps and ending at .07. The last Mini I tested this way was 2686mAh, in keeping with the advertised "Lg/Samsung 2600 mAh batteries" advertised for that and other FM products. Strangely, I can't find that claim for the Pro?

That's over 30% less capacity???

I see a few possibilities. First my measurement could be off for some reason. Secondly, they could have had a bind for space inside for the display and all and decreased the physical (and therefore electrical) size of the battery to fit? Or, most likely I think, the new Pro uses an extremely conservative cut off for whatever reason. That is it stopped running 'early', perhaps to avoid the 'taking too long to get to temperature' issue that I've seen show up on the plain vanilla Mini? Or it could be a defect with my unit?

Has anyone else noticed that the fun seems to come to an abrupt and early end and forces you to recharge sooner than anticipated?

TIA

When the indicator has 3 pixels left I noticed the device will shut off soon after. It drops pretty fast to 2, then 1, then a few seconds after it blinks and stops. I think this is typical of a linear (ie. direct conversion) of voltage to indicator. You are supposed to introduce some kind of compensation curve when your MCU has sufficient spare cycles for the computation (it can be really crude no need for a very fancy conversion)

But to answer your question, and I touched the topic in my pre-review: I don't know why but the manual indeed lists the cell capacity at 1800mAh instead of the 2600mAh we got previously. I have strictly no idea why they did that.

Thanks, I'd missed that in reading the manual. It all went by too fast for me to see the six 'warning flashes', a matter of minutes from 'smooth sailing', and less from 'lights out'. Some warning.

While not all Lithium based batteries are perfectly linear, 10% per .1 Volt is a good rule of thumb. They have a scaling problem, not a resolution one. It's like changing the paint on the scale of your gas tank gauge. So a 16 gallon tank no longer shows half at 8 and 1/4 with 4 gallons left. Here we have the 1/4 mark meaning almost empty, not with 25% of capacity left. Might help with sales, and provide some cover for the smaller battery but as a useful gauge it's a poor excuse. For whatever reason they took a linear scale and made it not linear, that took more work, not less.

That's a 30% reduction in battery, IMO a very substantial reduction in capacity. Like reducing the above gas tank to 12 gallons but calibrating the gas gauge to cover the fact so you still get '100 mile driving per 1/4 tank' (for the first 3/4). Pretty lame, IMO. If a guy get say 5 five minute sessions per bar for the first 3 he might reasonably expect 5 more on the remaining charge? I guess the idea is we'll learn not to trust it?

Thanks for pointing out my error (not knowing the secret), good to know I'm not loosing more marbles.

Herb gardener...
I considered this airflow mod, although my concern is that the extra air flow may cool the heater down... otherwise wouldn't smiss have made it with more airflow???

IIRC having the air enter from under the heater directly via the storage compartment was a feature that one of their OEM clients developed for their custom product, and they got the exclusivity for that, at least on the full size FM5 platform. This is why we didn't see it implemented in the FM5-Pro. I forgot how that custom vape is named but it has a dedicated thread somewhere here, and looks exactly like the FM5 it is based on.

Ah good to know! Then it was probably a limited-time exclusivity deal, as I clearly recall asking my Smiss contact why they were not back porting the idea to the entire FM5 range.

Do you guys really use it as a variable system? So far I've always left mine fully opened on the Mini-Pro. I think the variable aspect is more a gimmick than anything else but I like the fact that once fully opened nearly all air really enters in a straight-forward manner. When it's closed air must enter from somewhere else and I'm not sure that place is something we want... :p

And I've finally started using the Mini-Pro and it's good. The difference in power compared to the 5-Pro is mostly felt in the time it takes to heat up from cold. But when using it, it didn't feel more wispy. The taste at low temperature was really good. And I like the new mouthpiece base better, it's easier to clean.

I'm actually kinda interested in picking up one of these toys.

Probably leaning towards the 5.0s as it seems to be the best bang for your buck option. I've just been looking for a battery operated portable because being up north here, these cold temperatures and gusty winds don't help your torch. Seeing as I probably wont be getting my Zion till mid summer maybe I'm looking at other options for the time being.

PIU looks to have the best deal, even for a Canadian buyer. Though I could be mistaken.

Any helpful tips that I've missed ?

Oh does the 5.0s come with the dry herb capsules?

Also what vape could you compare the flavour to?

Is the draw resistance similar to the air?

Thanks ! :)

Try Canvape. Good price and ship in 2 days.
