Source Orb Pen Vape

Has anyone seen the stuff going on over at Reddit? It appears that Source Vapes may be using questionable Ti in their coils. I have a Source Vape myself and plan on continuing to use it, but I would love to be reassured by someone smarter than me that everything is alright.

Was just reading up on that i.e. the "Source Vapes lying about atomizer materials?" thread.

tl;dr as I understand it:

1) They have confirmed that (despite marketing materials all saying Grade 2 Titanium before, and them even saying so in this very thread) -- all Source Orb v3 coils are using a Titanium Alloy, which is apparently bad

For our regular coils, we use a user safe high-grade titanium alloy in order to keep our products compatible for all customers.

Source vapes claim no solder was used on these Titanium Alloy coils, so they say, which contradicts a lot of photos people have of disassembling their own atomizers. Even with no solder, Titanium Alloy is apparently pretty nasty stuff.

2) The new Orb XL is allegedly using Grade 1 Titanium instead, but they still can't answer how they could be connecting quality titanium to the Ni power wire, when grade 1-4 titanium can't be soldered - so how could it really be Grade 1 Titanium?

3) They are also selling new "Gr 1 Titanium" quartz and ceramic coil atomizers shipping January 15th but no mention of giving them for free to past customers who were lied to. Allegedly this is only being done for people who are into sub-ohm vaping, not because everyone is freaking out about their Titanium Alloy coils that they used to claim were grade 2 titanium.

I'm just not sure about the Quartz Terra atomizers - they claim to just use a ceramic heating element, but other things like the DT Donut use a ceramic heating element with titanium in it to heat up the ceramic I believe... So there's still a very real chance the Terra's might be dangerous too.

Hey Thanx for the heads up @YungLeaner and @Sadus .

That was the main reason why , I've stopped using
any coils from any pen vapes . Whether it was nickel ,
SS or Ti . They all give me that heated metallic taste !

Which is why I'd loved their Terras and was looking into
the DT also . I don't get that nasty taste with the ceramic
disks . I'm Not sure if the heating wires comes in contact
with my concentrates directly ... but some oils do seep beneath
the ceramic disks .

I have a couple of dead terras that can't be revive anymore .
So I'll get around to taking them apart and see for myself ...

So whatcha think?
Not sure yet, It looks freakin sexy as hell. Atomizers are awesome looking. But when I went to smoke it I seemed to get a scratchy throat feeling. Didn't blow out to much vapor also. But it could be the wax I was using it was more crumble like not the highest quality. I'll find out for sure how I feel about it this weekend after my trip to Colorado

I've been waiting for some reviews of the XL so I can see if someone else may be having the same problem

I almost got some quartz terra's, but had to cancel the backorder on principle after they had been claiming "grade 2 titanium" all this time falsely.. Even if the terras are safe I'd rather help other companies instead.

@poonman I'm trying a DT 2.5 soon too, whee. The only other thing that caught my eye is the Hercules SR-74x which is extremely popular on reddit apparently. It solves the "Load as you go" problem - you can put several grams in it I guess and it allegedly stays tasting fresh the whole time. It's also totally rebuildable and someone said they'd ran over 300 grams through it. The only downside is it is $99 and not made by Matt @ Divine Tribe :D His DT v3 will be fully rebuildable too so I'll probably give that a try first.

Hey man I fancy the Terra myself, per your suggestion actually bumping up the wattage/voltage. I have a question though, do you know how those Ceramic discs are heated? Perhaps a TI/Nickel coil under the doughnut?

Reason I ask, just got a temp control mod, and it came with a 510 to ego adapter. So, if I can temp control my coil as a true "low temp" dab type of device by fucking golly I wanna do that :) but I don't want to fry my Terra as its my only one, nor do I want to have this explode in my face if its not compatible lol.

This is upsetting, I have really fallen in love with Source double ceramic coils.... should I find something else?

What is the next best thing? I don't want any stuff that requires tinkering, just something that screws in and works well.

The Long and The Short - Source Orb XL Travel Kit Comprehensive Review (Part 1)

* Source Orb XL Travel Kit provided by Source Vapes (http://www.sourcevapes.com/collecti...coil-vape-pen-travel-kit?variant=104346113310)

Who Are you?

I'm a guy that likes to shoot straight from the hip. It's who I am, it's how I've always been, and I probably always will be short of some form of cerebral rearrangement. I'm a legal medical user in BC, Canada. I live on a fixed income with my wife, and I don't have a lot of money to spend on equipment to vaporize my cannabis concentrates with. So when several companies put out the call for testers and reviewers to apply, I tossed my name in and was fortunate enough to be chosen. And let it be clear from the start – just because someone sends me a free product doesn't mean I'm going to like it or pump their brand up. I like to buy what is best at the time and what I think will last – in any facet of my life. And that is how I will review and present vapes – from the perspective of someone who values hard earned cash, who recognizes that brands can change over time and grow in positive and negative ways just like the people that run them. My commitment to you is to present the truth from my experiences testing vaporizers, and to give you the long and the short of it.

What does that mean to me, the reader?

Well, the advantage of having a tester who is extremely money conscious means that I look at how well a device functions for the cost of the unit. Being a medical user means that I find issues with products relatively quickly, and my medical issues also lead me to being very abusive to products unintentionally. I drop things, forget they're in a pocket fighting it out with keys and a knife. I sit on them, get them wet occasionally, and generally beat things up. I can put a months worth of normal abuse in 2 or 3 days when I'm shaky. Atomizers are a dollar a day affair for me generally. 30 bucks a month isn't much to some people, but to me, it is. I generally kill a standard dual coil atomizer in at most 7 to 10 days of service. I vape between .25g to .5g of concentrate a day. I am... a torture tester.

THE LONG (skip to the bottom for “THE SHORT”):

Before the Orb XL even arrived in the mail I was hearing reviews from the other advance testers – that it was huge, unstealthy, and heavy. I had it in my head that several postmen would appear after the ringing of the doorbell, truck parked at the end of the driveway with flashing lights and an ORB XL – WIDE LOAD caution sign warning other cars to stay clear. I was pleasantly surprised to come home from a walk with the dogs and find a regular sized envelope in the mailbox with my name on it. I was even more surprised to find that the contents were about 1/4 of the total package.

http://imgur.com/xMlyLP3

After getting the dogs and myself dried off from the West Coast rain, and warming up enough to take some steady shots, I began to dismantle the package. The first thing that struck me was the nice little carrying case, which would be small enough to fit in my back pocket without attracting looks, as it's about the size of my wallet, albeit thinner and heavier.

http://imgur.com/rQJv0ma

Inside the case is a USB to Ego charger, a small concentrate tool, a small microfiber cleaning cloth to let this baby shine, the Orb XL upper which is comprised of 3 parts (base, middle, and mouthpiece), a variable voltage battery, a Grade 1 Titanium wrapped Quartz dual coil atomizer, and la belle amore, the reason I was excited to be receiving this package more than anything – Gr1 Titanium wrapped 3 Quartz rods in a bowl that Source purports to hold 1 gram of concentrate.

http://imgur.com/DXW8DGL

Wait wait wait, I thought to myself. Three quartz rods? I harkened back to double blade razors blades... is this the vaporizer pen's industry move to Mach III that was thought of as a gimmick not so long ago?

If it is, I guess I'll have to show you the rest of the package so you can find out... And be prepared. An XL vape requires a XL study and review.

The variable voltage battery is nice and sturdy and has a recessed button, a nice thing for someone like me who forgets to turn batteries off fairly regularly as it makes the button a little harder to hit than a button which protrudes from a unit. Adjusting the voltage is done by turning the base of the battery where there is a nice grippy adjuster that is about 1/8th of an inch tall of the length of the battery, and it sits flush and firm against the battery housing. The battery itself is a solid flat manpalm wide – so it is very substantial.

http://imgur.com/apGMNT2

The Orb XL itself is just beautifully machined. The base of the XL really holds my fancy as that adjustable airflow ring fits on the unit perfect, it moves and rotates with ease. It seems to be machined and fitted to such a tolerance that getting even a hair into it would prove difficult. And so far, with 4 animals in the house it hasn't happened. I know the picture above doesn't show it well, but I wanted to show the 5 air holes that go right through the base. This thing does breath rather well compared to the bought with my own money v2 Source Orb.

http://imgur.com/WEL0tNg

Everything put together and in one shot.

http://imgur.com/3oeZKx0

I put the Orb XL beside 2 of it's provided atomizers, and a v2 Orb version.

http://imgur.com/r1hL0Ua

And the Orb XL with his little, but older v2 Orb brother (please excuse the 510/Ego adapter on the bottom, I can't get it off unless I try way too hard). I was pleasantly surprised that they're the same “color” choice, but the patina on the old Orb makes it look much lighter.

http://imgur.com/grcdU4r

http://imgur.com/3rT8DJ5

Doing that first dry burn.

Now? Now we're ready to test the claim that this thing can hold one gram of concentrate. I happen to like fact checking, so this is VaporMythbusters time.

http://imgur.com/5Ai6I0x

I chose one gram of Beard Brothers “Bearded Blend” which is a combo of about 15 types of shatter. You're probably thinking that's a terrible idea to test flavor. Au contraire, it is a great way to see if I can recognize the variety of flavours that **should** be present. Not only that, but imagine you're a medical; cannabis patient that is always in some degree of pain. If you've ever been at circle on “420” and smoked a ton of different strains in one sitting, you're well aware of the complexity of the Entourage Effect. If I have the chance to smoke a variety of flavours in one go, I want to FEEL it. Tick as many receptors off as possible? Yes please.

http://imgur.com/DWNzBI7

First half gram verses the Triple.

http://imgur.com/GdCX7LK

I turned the battery down all the way to 2.7V – the lowest selection available - and gently pulsed the shatter into the bottom of the cart.

http://imgur.com/ZoAUZh0

http://imgur.com/w1oiiIN

And a full gram. VaporMythbusters CONFIRMED. I had to pulse a couple more low volt shots through the coils to make it happen, and gently make myself a path down to help things out a little, but that is a whole gram in there.

At this point, I actually put it down and went to bed. It was Friday night, and I wanted to enjoy the next day and see what this thing could do in 2 hits. So, I woke up on a Saturday in mid January, made some coffee and sat down to chat with my wife. I turned the voltage selector up to the 4.2V max and did a full 10 second pull. I couldn't tell how much vapor came out of me, my eyes were too busy... adjusting. I waited another minute, and pulled again for the same time and same setting.

The flavour was immense. Citrus varieties, earthiness, cinammon, another spice component i couldn't recognize, vanilla, and a hint of skunk dominated my palate. There was no burnt oil or diminished flavour between the two hits. It felt like the first time I'd taken a dab – an immense rushing body high, wonderfully calming closed eyed visuals and no more pain. No migraine, no joint pain, no aches, no neuropathic pain. Everything was right in the world, and remained so for around 5 to 6 hours. I'm used to having to vape every 5 to 10 minutes or so, so this was a nice bonus, but of course, I had just surely consumed a couple of days worth of medication. (continued)

The Long and The Short - Source Orb XL Travel Kit Comprehensive Review (Part 2)

(continued..)

http://imgur.com/vgAn0VO

http://imgur.com/IO9gWRE

These two shots show what disappeared in those 2 hits. I'm fairly confident I consumed about .5g in those 2 pulls. For those of you naysayers possibly saying that the coils were sucking up oil and it hadn't primed yet, remember it was already set to go the night before, coils primed, air path established, and that quartz is non porous and unable to suck up oils like ceramic can and does.

http://imgur.com/rOLDY37

http://imgur.com/jWX5hli

I also scraped the edges of the bowl (you can see the roughly 2mm thick rim of still lightly colored shatter around the edge) down onto the atomizer the next day using the handy tool, and vaporized that in 2 hits. All I was left with at that point was around .1g as the bottom around the base of the coils where it wasn't pulled into the vapor path. Interestingly, you can scrape some of that oil with the tool that Source provides.

http://imgur.com/xNXAApC

http://imgur.com/3qIp1s9

http://imgur.com/ir6gnUC

After 4 hits total, I checked the mid and mouthpiece for splatter and wastage and found an estimated .1g to .15g to liberate. This is probably from my first and second pull when the atomizer was full. It was nice to see that it was light and golden still, and it tasted about 90% as good as when it went through originally, and mostly dominated by citrus tones.

Then I spent 2 weeks playing with the XL and using it like you shouldn't, but actually can. I left the Triple coil in and started loading small amounts in at a time, .1g loads on top of the atomizer, and using low voltage to see if this device could lean towards the conservative side of usage. I was pleased to find 2.9V on the Triple to work very well. The vapor was still thick and misty, the flavour from whatever strain I had in on that day came through perfectly, but I was able to do what I could with my v2 Orb and the tester Evolve I just finished reviewing – load a little and vape it slowly. This tells me that if you're looking for an all around machine that can handle all kinds of work, this thing is super versatile.

Over the last few days I've been proving the XL even more versatile. Since the atomizer threading is the same as standard sized atomizers, you can put a normal v2 or v3 or any such threaded atomizer in this thing. I even managed to get an Evolve atomizer into it, although not something I would recommend because it leaves a gap between the battery and Orb XL base. My point is that if you like the look and finish of the XL and want to use a smaller atomizer than is provided you can: I've been starting to test some of the new v3 atomizers that Source has recently sent over in both my v2 Orb and the Orb XL and they work fantastically in it.

I haven't had any battery life issues. Source claims that the XL can provide 60 to 70 hits. If someone wants to provide the funds for the shatter, I would be more than happy to test this end out! I was able to use the Orb XL battery on 3.7V for a half gram total of shatter with no problems and no indication that battery life was waning by the onboard indicator light that changes color as one approaches the end of a charge.

Now, let's talk about the size and weight of this thing. It's not little. I'm a big guy, I can pocket the XL kit just fine in my back pocket, although, I can also fit it into my front pocket. But when I do, it looks like I'm very happy to see you depending on how it lays in the pocket. It pokes out of the top of my pocket by around an inch – not a deal breaker as I'm legal – but might be an issue for some looking to go incognito. I think the new Flosstradamus Kit addresses that quite nicely by being just a little bit shorter.

But here's the thing. I've seen reports that this thing is heavy. Well, let's check how bad it actually is...

http://imgur.com/LMESqX7

There's the ol' v2 Orb on the kitchen scale with the iStick30W, which has been my daily driver for 6 months straight, weighing in at 166 grams.

http://imgur.com/04G4oon

And the monster, the heavyweight, the ORB XL, WEIGHING IN AT A WHOPPING...(whispers) – Hold on. This thing is 148g. That's actually pretty good. I also weighed a Kangertech and v2 Orb at 91g, so considering the length, size, and perceived heft of the Orb XL it's really not that much more. I was extremely surprised to see this beast weigh in less than my daily combo.

I wanted to dislike the Orb XL for being too big to carry in public. I've spent a week straight toting it everywhere I've gone and it's certainly doable without the need for a bag. And with the ability to toss it into the case and throw it in the back pocket of my jeans is a plus as well, although I'd rather work on that sweet, sweet key and knife induced patina. I wanted to dislike the XL for providing a perceived gimmick – triple coils – but they truly work well and were more versatile than I imagined. Being able to take a .25g dab at 4.2V or turn the power down and conserve the concentrate like normal really does make this device more appealing, and the ability to use other non XL atomizers further this allure. All around, the Orb XL Travel Kit is aiming to be a hitter than can tackle any pitch thrown, and in my case it knocked expectations out of the park.

THE SHORT:

Album - http://imgur.com/a/lhOUe

Overall Purchase Rating: (4/5)

Weakness(es):

  • Little bit long to pocket for most people, but really if you're buying something with XL in the title you probably know what you're getting into.
  • The coils need to be lower in the cart, because as they sit it leaves room for 0.10g to sit in the bottom under the coils.
  • Replacement coils are $10 each, which doesn't make replacements cheap. I would have liked to have seen two XL triple coils instead of one triple and one double. I mean, the double is beast but two triples would have been better.

Strengths: Gr1 Titanium Triple Coils Quartz Atomizer does hold 1 gram of concentrate (http://imgur.com/a/lhOUe), variable airflow via the adjustable ring on the base, Variable Voltage (VV) Battery (http://imgur.com/DTBfB29), and extremely sturdy and exquisite construction all around.

  • Coil actually does hold 1 gram of concentrate and can deliver quarter gram dabs with ease at 4.2V. I managed to vaporize a ~half gram in 2 pulls.
  • Surprisingly versatile due to the VV battery. I was able to stretch 0.10g out over hours by pulsing and using 2.9V
  • Adjustable Airflow rings works as advertised. Twisting it while pulling does produce noticeable differences in airflow.
  • The construction is just beautiful. Every piece is machined to a very high standard, everything is tight and study, and I can't see any way this thing could fail on me mechanically.

Medical:
  • Having bad hands and having complained about small parts in my Yocan Evolve review, I was happy to handle the Orb XL. I have multiple issues that affect the dexterity of my hands and I haven't dropped a piece of this yet – my new floors are thankful for that fact. Even handling the atomizers was easy. Also, everything fits together so snugly and easily, there were no issues with mis-threading at any point in the last couple of weeks.
  • The ability for a patient like myself to load medication into this device and not have to interact with the inside frequently is very appealing. The large cart means I can spend less time loading and more time doing the activities that this medication allows me to do. I imagine this would be a very easy device for a senior to use as well. Being a substantial vape has it's upsides.
  • You can medicate quickly. You can medicate slowly. You can go anywhere in between. This really is a jack of all trades. If you're like me and find yourself feeling like vaporizing is a daily chore, this device allows you to just have one and be done. I vaporized a half gram in 2x10 second pulls.

The terra donut sucks with a VV you need a box mod

unfortunately you're going to need a stronger battery to operate
their terras

Is this because it doesn't produce large clouds of vapor? Does it still vaporize your material with the standard battery without the clouds? I prefer no clouds as long as I'm getting my cannabinoids. And I like the idea of lower temp and slower. But if it doesn't work as is at all then what's the point?

I'm doing a lot of research now and I'm down to the Source Orb Slim with Quartz Terra, Dr. Dabber Aura, Linx Hypnos Zero, KandyPen Donut and the Puffco Pro (hoping the new model comes out with a donut).

Thanks.

I used the source big rig for a year and it worked fine. It finally broke so I got a variable wattage nunchuk. It is better than the big rig but either one will be good for the terra.

Just over two months ago, a dispensary offered a free E-Go globe-style vaporizer with every two grams of concentrate purchased. I had a reason to give vaping a try to see if it was a viable replacement for smoking cannabis.

For reference:
  • I smoked around a gram of bud per day
  • The pre-filled cartridges sold at dispensaries cost too much and I didn't feel stoned (I still felt the need to smoke or was unsatisfied)
  • I wanted to minimize the amount of stuff I'm inhaling, so I liked the idea of vaping concentrates directly versus the PG/VG + concentrate
  • I'm just a regular customer that decided to post a review
I started looking into vape options and was immediately overwhelmed. Do I build a custom rig? Buy something off the shelf? After a week of reading forum posts, I was more confused. I searched a little more and found this thread. The Source Orb 3 seemed like a good option for me for a few reasons:
  • People were saying the build quality was good
  • Lots of positive feedback on the terra atomizer
  • Affordable (compared to my other primary option: the Hercules)

Ordering-Delivery:

I've seen a few posts citing poor communications with the company. I didn't have any issues. I called them early evening on Dec 28 to ask questions about a coupon code that wasn't working. They immediately answered my call and gave me a new code for a larger discount. Thanks! My order was shipped quickly and arrived several days later. This was a nice surprise as I didn't expect anything to happen until after the new year.

Getting Started

I started out with the double quartz coil. It worked as expected. But I was really interested in the terra. Once I switched to that, it was so much better, I haven't tried anything else.

0B-3RKzkIRbJKVVk2SzhMTjZmMkk

Battery life was not great. But, I kinda figured that would be the case after reading posts from others. I really wanted something that would last all day under moderate usage. I went with an 40W VV Eleaf Istick set to 13-15W depending on the concentrate and how strong I want the hit to be.

Thoughts after almost two months and an ounce of concentrates later...
  • I haven't smoked a bowl in two months
  • It holds a good amount of concentrate. I am able to load enough in the bowl to last a reasonable amount of time for a moderate/heavy user.
  • I love this thing

Negative...
  • I got the "black chrome" one - the finish is coming off (see pic below)
uc

Cleaning
  • I clean everything once a week in ISO. Only takes a few minutes.
  • The terra donut stays black, even after soaking in alcohol

Would I buy it again?

Almost. If I did it again, I'd just get the top end with the terra atomizer, skipping the extras and included battery. That would have saved me ~$40 in the long run.

MuushuPork,
I really want the xl but Im turned off by people's posts saying they go through a half gram in a few minutes lol. I go through an eighth of shatter every 3 weeks on the enail only. I am looking to get a pen though for concerts.

I use ISO for cleaning my pens as well, just never soaked the atomizer before.

Usually the extent of ISO on my atomizers is limited to the top rim and the outside, just to clean off sticky.

So does ISO clean your atomizers very thoroughly? I am curious what it looks like before/after. Might you please take a pic from above (so that we can see the atomizer) during your next cleaning?

Im willing to give it a shot, i just figure it would damage the rubber or something internal.

It hasn't caused any noticeable damage so far. But who knows. I'm a cheapo, but also like to keep clean so you can optimize taste. Or at least that is my theory. :)

After soaking, let it dry it out before using. Iso has a strong odor, so you will know when it is dry. Then I put the atomizer on and let that heat up until the sizzling stops. Good to go.

I've only boiled it once. And I kept it barely at boiling so ~185F-ish.

I'd worry of iso imparting flavor... even with a preheat burnoff, these ceramics are porous and would think they absorb some iso.

Why do you need to clean the atomizers? I just keep loading over and over again until thy atty eventually stops working. Usually after 10 grams or so..then I just throw it away.

Because I want them to last for more than 10 grams? I also want to enjoy the different tastes of the different concentrates.

Iso boils around 185F. It it pretty easy to boil it off before you put anything into the atomizer. You will know if there is Iso in there if you can smell it.

According to Google, odor threshold for iso ranges from 40 ppm to 200ppm. Acceptable exposure is 400ppm for 8 hours (equates to 980 milliliters per cubic meter of air). See this for more info: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/81-123/pdfs/0359.pdf

How do you know when to clean? And how much longer will they last with cleaning?

Personal preference. I've met people that have never cleaned their pipe and they are fine with that.
