Discontinued The Grasshopper

Regarding their last update and the news that all Pre-orders (regardless of date) have estimated shipping times of 02-03 2016. It shows me they at least have hit that reset button and have faith in their ability to produce these units in large numbers for the first time. Although they have made these promises before I think it is telling that there are a large number of reports of people FINALLY having their shipping times updated, some of which have been past due the stated amount for 6-9 months.

Either way looking forward to seeing what they can produce with money coming in from an increase in preorders. This thing is starting to get buzz with people who never consider vaping before and thats where this device, I think will lead to sales increasing industry wide as people branch out to other styles of vaping.

Wow, that's a nice mouthpiece. Might prefer that over the CU! And the GH can be used even stealthier - it magically disappears completely. :D :peace:

Well, someone will point out that people with problems are more likely to post about it. Which may well be true, but the fact is, the only information we actually have comes from people posting, and anything else is just speculation.

I'd think folks would like to understand all sides of the experience. While I read this thread regularly, and post occasionally, (an early backer with GH since last summer), I don't know how often or interesting I can make comments about using it. I don't have the breadth of experience with vapes many here have. I've been a combuster[?] looking for a healthier one-hitter. I don't session much. The Grasshopper is used all day, pretty much every day. I'm still waiting for the second unit I ordered with my shipping confirmation last summer when they shipped it, and am stuck in preorder queue. I'd expect folks would like to understand the ugly too, 4th body... Been waiting a month for 6th backend. Many have said the experience of using it is fulfilling and awesome, but how many ways can we keep saying that? And when it's broken (especially repeatedly), it's really frustrating because you don't want to be without it. I get by fine with two batteries and a car charger.

GHL has frustrated many with their optimistic and inconsistent communication and Customer service. That's self-inflicted (even many of us who've gotten theirs get frustrated). I think most of us want them to be successful, and our investments as backers and pre-orderers prove that. But we can't make them successful, they either have to deliver and satisfy their customers, or not and face those consequences.

I don't buy into this.
It just seems like a poor excuse for mediocrity.
"Everyone is shit, so we can be shit too".

How about a company (any company, not singling Grasshopper labs out) actually deliver a reliable product instead of taking the approach: "everything fails anyway, so why bother".

^^ This !!

Again... Millennials.

Maybe I'm just jaded, but I'm pretty suspicious about the way this update went. It seems to me like they only sent an update to pre-orders, and ignored backers.

I guess that makes sense, since saying "Hey pre-orders, we will start shipping your units soon!" sounds a lot better than "Sorry backers, our misguided optimism got us again, and we didn't get your units shipped."

I really think that they rushed through emailing all the backers at the beginning of last month, just to say that they had done it, and to get us all to believe that we would all have hoppers shipped by the end of the month, even though they probably knew they wouldn't be able to. Saw a post on Reddit where at least one backer didn't even have an address confirmation before they told everyone that all the address confirmations had gone out. I wonder how many more might be in the same boat.

And now, so many pre-orders seem to be getting excited about updated website dates and the possibility of their unit shipping soon, just because GHL says they are finishing up the last of the backers. Newsflash: they were finishing up the last of the backers in December, after months of supposed production ramp-up, and with only 300 backers to go.

We're in February, and backers are still waiting for hoppers. Backers are still waiting for shipment confirmation. And as far as I can tell, backers got no update.

My original backer estimated ship date? February 2014. Newly updated estimated ship date? February 2016 (for the last several months, it was November 2015). My warning to pre-orders that think "We're almost there!": I thought that too. In September, when my order said October, after the other ship dates were missed.

I still believe GHL will come through eventually, but don't hold your breath.

I stopped reading the giant slbdco wall of texts on the third repetitive one above, but just want to say: one major difference between pax, a&ab or Toyota and bmw compared to HL is that those companies have all figured out how to mass produce and deliver with an honest timeframe, instead of stringing potential customers along.

I don't need HL working 7 days a week, too much work might be causing them to be tired and then they make stupid mistakes like shipping dead units. I would much rather have them honestly say what they can realistically accomplish successfully.

"there must be a reason why they didn't updated backers"

Lol. Well yeah, there's a reason. I think it boils down to this: Most updates were something like "Working on issues. Production going up. Almost there!"

Lately, the tone shifted to make it sound more definite, like "We should be totally done with backers this month! Yaaaayyy!"

And... They didn't make it happen. But admitting that to everyone could hurt new orders.

It's easier to string people along by their hopes (and keep money flowing) when you say "Yay!" to pre-orders instead of saying "Sorry...Again." to backers.

I spy with my little eyes: Someone that hasn't been paying attention to the world. When a new product comes out (like electronic handheld vaporizers. They're pretty fucking new, if you think about it. Nonbutane powered vapes really only started to show up about 5 year ago), there are bound to be problems. As time goes on, those problems get sorted out. A company releases it's initial product, it works well but has some kinks to work out, then it releases it's second product and it's even better. You think 100 years ago (not quite 100 years, but you get my point) your precious toyotas worked as well as they do now? No fucking way! They were shit, just like all cars. But, over time, they released more and more new models and with each new model they addressed more and more issues. That's how life works. You try something, it doesn't work as well as you'd like, so you improve upon it. That's why you BETA TEST (which is, in reality, what the backers are), so you can iron out problems. You think the first ever cell phone was perfect? No, it wasn't. They fucked up all the time. The first computers? Not only did they fuck up all the time, you needed an entire warehouse to store them. You get my point? It's a fairly new industry with it's fair share of problems and every year more and more of them become non-issues. I've never seen a company that doesn't offer at least a 5 year warranty on it's products. If it fucks up, you get it fixed and move on with your life, just like you do when your car breaks down (which still happens all the time, so all of your arguments are effectively invalid). If you don't like that, get out. We won't miss you.

I'm definitely getting in trouble for this comment. Oh well, worth it.

Modnote: I'm glad you felt that it was worth it. Warning point issued for breaking our Be Nice rule. Enjoy your vacation.

Nkotb is spot on with his warning and last couple posts. Well said.

Add on that some people have had multiple failures. No wonder why they didn't get the "last 300" out in Dec, or Jan. No way they accounted for all the failures.

Anyone that puts any stock in the updates after this long, well....I got some moon rocks to sell you.

Positive vibes and happy customers for sure. I'm all in.

But I want it perfect & I want it now! Because I'm entitled(my least favorite word)...

Awesome post, thanks!

I recently purchased a Hopper via private sale through this forum. For a working Hopper, really a UNICORN in the vape world if there ever were one, I was willing to shell out a pretty penny to get it.

Really there may not be more chances the more I look at this. TONS of noise both on here and Reddit about this thing, both good and bad.

Sure seems like GH Labs is in a tailspin they may not be able to recover from. Hopefully they can get their act together and soon...

There have been powered vapes out for longer than 5 years...the volcano and vaporbrothershas been out for much longer. Before you say you meant portable, then you can't compare today's laptops with computers that took up a whole warehouse. Just sayin...

Also, will you consider pre-orders to be beta testers, bc that was not in the description when I paid nor anyone else. Hell, GL didn't even say backers were beta testers until a couple months ago. In fact they said they had their own testers before the first backer received theirs.

This is a new product, so I don't expect perfection (which is why I haven't cancelled), sometimes it is cool to be on the cutting edge if you can afford it like me (and when I receive, I will have the baddest vape on the block to brag to my friends), but thy could at least cop to their issues, rather than the communication they have been doing.

The key word is portable. I'm not going to say that I meant portable, I'm going to point out that i SPECIFICALLY SAID ELECTRONIC HANDHELD VAPORIZERS. Is a volcano a handheld vape? No, it is not. Also, I didn't compare laptops to computers that took up a warehouse. in fact, I never said "laptops", I said "computers". Regardless, my point is still valid. When computers first came out, they had a lot of problems. When cars first came out, they had a lot of problems. When cell phones came out, they had a lot of problems. When cameras came out, they had a lot of problems. Whenever a new product comes out, it is going to have problems. Does that mean we should accept it? No. Will it get better? Yes. Nice try, though. If you're going to try and disprove my argument please try to use facts instead of semantics and pretending I said things I didn't say.

but thy could at least cop to their issues, rather than the communication they have been doing.

They are not obligated to communicate anything to you. They are not publicly traded and there is absolutely no legal or moral requirement for them to tell you ANYTHING beyond when your grasshopper HAS shipped, not when it is expected to ship. Be happy they communicate with you at all.

Tailspin? Okay, I'm really sorry to tell you all this but if you don't have your grasshopper yet, the reason is exquisitely boring, it's because it hasn't been built yet.

I'm not sure how you define tailspin, if you mean they just got another new machine to build chargers faster, hired more builders of the device (which are assembled by hand in Boulder) get new orders everyday and have even incrementally improved the device a tailspin than yeah you right.

In the real world, the delay is good ole fashion demand out stripping supply. They are increasing capacity as they can but wisely for a NON INVESTOR BACKED TINY STARTUP, they are growing sustainably. Don't want to wait? Cancel your order. If you want the device, then wait knowing they are literrally working at capacity to meed demand that has FAR OUTSTRIPPED SUPPLY.

This company has never denied a refund or warranty claim and since I actually know what's happening I can tell you that all the speculation is just that and the delay is just boring supply and demand, either be patient and recieve your device or get a refund and pay more for it later.

No one is maliciously keeping a grasshopper from you, just turns out that as evidenced by how much attention this device which is still in PRE-RELEASE BY THE WAY, this thing is just wicked popular!

This company is about as far from what I would call a tailspin that I can imagine. Like I said, not knowing, if I had to guess they could triple capacity and still be months away from full on, order and ship today because the pre-orders just keep on coming and frankly I think they would have to move facilities if they got very many more employees

Now if you want a new untested but maybe cool vape that ships FAST! try the Elo, I ordered it Monday and it just arrived from Hong Kong today! We'll see how great of a vape it is but they certainly lead the leauge in shipping for those whom shipping is the most important feature of a vape.

Speaking of things people didn't say, how about "obligated"?
He said they could give better communications, I said they aren't obligated to communicate anything so he should be happy they communicate at all. He didn't have to say the word "obligated" for me to point out that Hopper Labs isn't obligated to do anything, he implied it. Looks to me like you stopped reading a little short of my last sentence.

You are right...I missed the word handheld...you win the Internet.

You forgot to argue against me about my beta tester point, though...

I also never said obligated, I would prefer nothing to what is said, since then I wouldn't be getting my hopes up only to being let down month after month after month.

You pre ordered a device that didn't exist, from a company that didn't exist before the idea. Inherently you should know you're not getting a mature product (for us this should read: beta). They have been open about development, where they told us they are still designing parts aiding reliability and production, just last month.. it's negligent to infer anything else.
