Review/discussion on the Zeus Iceborn vaporizer accessory!

Creeper

deep in the matrix...
Hello FC!

I was surprised to see that no one has posted up yet on the Zeus Iceborn that was released last month so I thought I should give back to this awesome community with some actually first-hand experience using it the last few weeks.

I had first heard about the Iceborn through an email blast from Toronto Vaporizer, the retailer that I purchased my Arizer EQ last September. They teased at a revolutionary device that will provider cooler draws, bigger clouds and waste less essential oils. When the pre-order email showed up a week or so later I jumped on it right away.

Currently the unit is $70 CDN + tax and shipping which is the same price I paid during the pre-order. You can view their retail page and the reviews on there at: http://torontovaporizer.ca/zeus-iceborn.html

The unit arrived somewhere around the the holidays in December. Packaging on Zeus products is pretty cool, way better then a glass pipe that I bought earlier last year which is quite funny considering it's mainly plastic. The main unit was stuck on the base of the cardboard holding it in so just be careful removing it. The bottom tray housed the hoses and mouthpiece. Included is the main unit, 3 silicone hoses, 3 mesh hose covers and a plastic mouthpiece.

How the unit works is once it's filled with water and frozen it chills the vapor as it passes through the unit. The main way to use it is to have the middle port connected to the vaporizer so that it passes through the 4 metal tubes of increasing diameter and then finally travels over-top the ice to the exit port which is where you'd connect the hose you'd inhale from. You can reverse the ports as per their instructions but I have never done or felt the need to do that.

Overall I feel the unit is well designed. It has a built-in drip tray at the bottom which captures most of the condensation that falls off the outside of the unit (really a touch of genius and I was surprised it wasn't mentioned at all on the retail page). The top washer has a couple of wings on the end which I think serve to move the vapor around the surface of the ice more before exiting, again a nice touch. Zeus said the unit was designed in Germany and I do believe them based on execution of the product.

It's pretty simple to clean and assemble, I just break it down to all the individual seals and metal tubes and have them soak in Orange Chronic cleaner for 5 minutes. The plastic body and lid I wash with soap and water. Because of the nature of the seals they really retain the smell quite a bit but perhaps soaking them in isopropyl alcohol as per their instructions would remove the smell entirely (I have yet to get my hands on some to try so I'm just using what I have on hand right now to be honest). I will mention that the mesh hose covers are pretty slick in how they work but I noticed the ends fray quite a bit which detracted from the whole aesthetic of them that I don't even bother to use them. Also I don't use the plastic mouthpiece as I prefer glass and have a nice one from an SSV whip kit that I use.

The washers have specific grooves so you quickly learn which tube goes where. Once I dry everything thoroughly (you don't want moisture in the wrong place as it could affect the units function) you reassemble and fill water just bellow the markings inside the plastic body. I do wish they made the markings stand out more, a minor design flaw but in no means a deal breaker for me.

One thing to note is it must be on a level surface in your freezer or else you might affect it's performance. First time I had placed it in a corner on the floor of my freezer and it was very difficult to take draws through the unit. I opened the lid and rotated it around to another spot and the problem was gone.

So last thing to wrap up is my thoughts on performance. On cooler draws yes, hands down the Iceborn is awesome versus just drawing directly from the vaporizer. I use a short whip to draw from and I love the coolness that I get from being so close to the vapor just coming right off the top of the ice. On bigger clouds I have to say nope, I definitely achieved bigger draws using my glass bong on the end of my vaporizer... the amount of vapor that can be captured and then inhaled on the Iceborn versus a waterpipe isn't even a contest but honestly, I don't care about what I am exhaling looks like... if I did I'd probably be into that juice/e-cig gizmos for that effect. And on Zeus's last point of more efficient draws I don't think you waste a lot of product going through a waterpipe so it's really a moot point as far as I feel.

If you want cooler draws pick one up, given how the American dollar is blasting our Canadian one it should probably cost you yanks .25 cents for one soon lol. :D

I will post pics of my rig and the specific parts that I use later so that you can better see where I am coming from. If you have questions or want to see specific parts let me know and I will do it the next time I have the unit apart for cleaning.

And that concludes our broadcast...

So many questions, sorry in advance bro! Also kudos for getting this thread up so quickly, thanks for your contribution! :)

Sadly, I probably won't ever buy one of these, because I do not want aluminium or silicone in my airpath.

Still, this is a fascinating device and I am really interested to understand more nonetheless! I'll try break my questions down 1 by 1 here.

1. How long do you find before ice melts? If people in hot climates (that regularly get up to 110f or more) were to own this, I am concerned that the ice would melt very quickly and be dramatically less effective for less time until needing to be frozen again. For a frequent all day user, this may be impractical.

2. Is there any way to use it without whips? I find that the use of whips really make the claim of 'less reclaim' very difficult to critically engage with. This is a very long airpath, with a section that is cooling the vapor even more than a glass rig with water will. We may not lose so many water solubles due to not passing through water, but it only follows that this is a crude cold trap condensor in function and should cause substantial reclaim in the aluminium tubes and especially in the whips! To gauge the amount of reclaim buildup in silicone whips can be very challenging, especially when the whips are black and not see-through like this.

3. You seem to say that there is not much visible vapor. This could well be due to recondensation in the vapor path. It may be that those compounds that condense more slowly are still getting through to you but that plenty is still lost along the way. Is it possible to get a milkshot video so we can see your exhale?

Despite all I've said above, I actually think that this concept could really be taken further and made into something indispensable (inert materials, no whips, shorter airpath etc). Kudos to the manufacturer for getting the ball rolling!

nice write up. thanks!

i'm annoyed that they are out of stock at the moment but i will be picking one up. i don't care about huge hits. my lungs have been huffing smoke for 45 years. been there, done that. i'm fine with nice average size tokes these days.

@herbivore21 No worries! Least I could do considering how much you guys have helped me out in the past!

1. I have never had the ice melt fully on me in a session. The whole unit is just a touch smaller then a pint of ice cream (think Häagen-Dazs or Ben and Jerry's containers) so I find there is more then enough ice to keep the thing frozen for a while. That said if I leave it out for a whole night it's melted come morning for me to clean. In a hot climate for sure it might be an issue but I would place it back in the freezer between daily sessions and it should be good to go in my opinion.

2. hmmm, it would be cool to have glass pathways to the unit and out to the user... but as far as I see it can only be used with a whip/hose. So far with 2 cleanings between 10 or so sessions the only things I have found is the smell to really be embedded in the washers and a ring of fluff at the level where the ice tops out at. The latter I am curious to know more about, if it some weird remnants of the vapor making direct contact with the ice. Next time I clean the unit I'll try to get a good picture of it to see if some on FC can figure it out. I do wish the aluminium tubes were say glass instead but I haven't found much of anything on them with my cleanings thus far.

3. I think the smaller clouds is due to the direct nature of the pathway versus a bong at the end... with the bong I was able to trap way more vapor and then remove the hose to suck it all up, with the Iceborn it has less space at the top of the unit where there is no ice compared to the bong. That being said you will probably get bigger clouds on an Iceborn versus direct whip due to the fact you should be able to inhale more vapor because of the decreased irritation of the heat. I will try to get some milkshots with the Iceborn, bong and direct whip but no guarantees.

I agree with you this is a great step in the direction of vaporizer accessories!

@stressed Awesome! Please post here your thoughts!

Here is the picture of my rig as promised:

So the parts starting from the vaporizer:
- Arizer EQ
- DDave mod bowl
- SSV glass wand w/ Arizer elbow screen
- stock Arizer EQ whip
- Zeus Iceborn
- Zeus Iceborn short silicone whip medium diameter
- SSV mouthpiece

I am thinking of cutting my Arizer whip down to maybe even a third to have a more direct pathway, what do you guys think/suggest?

Inside the bottom, note the "fluff" ring around where the ice meets the vapor... any thoughts on what this is?

the store finally has a few for sale. i just bought mine! the zeus and shipping is about $61.00 U.S.

I can't wait to cool things down a bit. i'm not into massive hits anymore so i'm fine with it not doing well in that area.

Thanks for the review, I've been wondering about this thing for awhile. I saw someone else post about their vape, but no one mentioned the iceborn. I have to say it looks gimmicky, but I've been wrong before and I'm definitely interested in it. I'll have to check it out more and see if it will work with the herbalaire. I can't see the pics in the post above and I'm not sure what the connector to the vape looks like. I'm tempted to get one at $61 usd.

I've tried almost frozen water in my bubbler and I didn't feel like that made much of a difference. Trying warm water sounds interesting.

@Creeper . i got the iceborn this morning. i just put it in the freezer BUT man you weren't lying about that fill line.

"

i still don't know where it is. the inside has those 4 "ribs" that run up the device, then there is a thinner protursion (rib) that goes closer to the top of the unit. in looking at their instruction packet it looks like the water should be just below this second thinner rib. IS that right? so annoying.

i'm going to write them about this. we're stoners. just point the fucking thing out!

shazam!

i got it, a few hours ago. i cleaned it off with rubbing alcohol, froze the water and i've done 4 bags full of 4 different genetics. it's a lot more than i'd usually vape in a short amount of time but i'm experimenting!

NOT ONE COUGH! not one. zero. nada. i would usually have coughed quite a bit doing 4 bags. i'm very happy. i don't use the mouthpiece as it is way too restricting. i use the 2 widest hoses and take a long, slow drag off of the whip itself. 3 times better than using that stupid mouthpiece. it's like sipping though a very small straw vs a large straw.

the air flow is like hitting a joint. so it's not restrictive to me at all. it's not a bong hit and that's fine with me. and yes i noticed that there is not as much visible vapor on the exhale. maybe 1/4 as much as without the iceborn. i don't care about stuff like that as long as i'm getting just as high.

i wonder if vapor and smoke react differently to ice?

i guess i did the water line correctly as it works well. i'm looking forward to wake and vake tomorrow. i've been high all day so i can't really judge how or if it affects the buzz. as long as the buzz is as good, i'm going to be happy. i'm very high now but i just vaped about 3.5 tenths.

i need to try it with a whip instead of hooking up my bag. the bag mouth piece fits nicely into the whips.

so far, i'm a believer!

hmmm, are the pics working for anyone else? it's off my google account and I did it like that for another forum and it worked fine there.

@stressed nice man! yeah, I'm still enjoying it so far... I never used the plastic mouth piece, the SSV glass mouth piece fits perfect on the medium short whip.

I do think they should charge cheaper for it, it is well designed and has nice touches but it's a plastic tub with metal tubes at the end of the day made in China. That being said I don't vape without it so, yup.

let me know about the pics, I still see them when I check out this post.

well, i did 4 bags this morning and kept thinking, why am i not as high as i should be???????? it's great on the not coughing thing but if it is some how lessening the high, this will go into the closet of unused toys.

now it could just be one of those days when for whatever reason, i just don't get as high as usual. i did do a lot yesterday. i could be getting a tolerance to the 2 genetics i'm mostly using.

i decided to just do 2 bags without the unit and i'm pretty high. now this is 6 bags (about .1 per bagfull) over a period of 2.5 hours and that's a lot of pot for me. i usually vape about .5 over the course of the morning.

i will have to hold my ok on this thing for a few days. i'm going to have to try it a few different times to get a baseline and the only test i trust is the first high of the day.

i put the whips in "backwards", as in i drew vapor from the middle hole and attached my bag to the side hole. when i realized that it was not per instructions, i switched to drawing the vapor out of the side hole.

here's the weird thing. doing it their way, i don't get much of a hit and it takes a very long time to empty the bag. when i reverse it and draw out of the middle hole, i get bigger hits.

the hits i get are maybe 1/2 as much as i can take directly from the bag per hit. the vapor is so cool that i can take a nice long hit, exhale and take another one right away.

i left it in the fridge over night. i took it out around 4 a.m. ish and about 1/2 the ice had melted after 1.5 hours. i'm going to figure out how long it stays mostly solid ice. betwen an hour and 1.5 hours i think. i keep my house in the mid 70s. i'll just pop it in the freezer when i'm not going to hit it for awhile.

more to come!

@Creeper - about the pictures. when i look at your post #18, the pics don't show up.

EDIT:: well, i've done 2 bags without the iceborn and i'm barely high so i'm thinking it's just me. my tolerance seems to have jumped up a bit. i have been overdoing it lately. i'll have to change out genetics and start fresh.

the good thing about being retired is, i can experiment all day, every day.

@stressed lol, experimenting is all the fun!

Make sure the draws are smooth, first time I used mine the draws were getting worse over the session... ends up I had the thing on an angle in the freezer and it mucked up the exit hole as water was accumulating underneath it.

I'll take a look at the pics tonight when I get home, thanks for letting me know!

I'm getting more and more interested in this. Especially since I still cough a bit using my bubbler. I think I read in the reviews on the site people had clogs when they didn't freeze it level and assembled it when it wasn't 100% dry.

I've been watching this and for what it is it seems overpriced.

I made one with a cutdown napisan container in a few minutes.i just coiled a metre of eq hose inside the base around the sides no kinks and popped the ends through two holes I cut into the lid.

You could use a drill or even a torch and a bit of metal tube to do that bit.

I then filled with water popped the lid and froze.

It works great for $0.anyone literally could do it.

I use mine with my SSV..the SSV hose fits over EQ hose from the cooler and I picked up a drinking glass straw on dhgate that pushes inside the other end as a mouthpiece.

its An easy fun experiment in vapor cooling.

This version like the original condensates so needs a neoprene cooler around it to be perfect.otherwise You should put it on a saucer to catch the condensate.

Vapor is very cool as there is 3 feet of airway cooled at once.

other option would be a mason jar mug and use glycerin instead which I think freezes at -45 deg for even better cooling. You would need grommets and the jar sealed,as the glycerin would slop about.
I think You could put a glycerin filled mason jar in the freezer.i went with plastic as it can take a knock.

Save your money.reduce, reuse, recycle or spend and buy either way it's all good.

ok, now i'm annoyed. but i'm high so... :)

twice now, i've pulled the unit out of the freezer and the airways were blocked so i couldn't take a drag. both times were after i had used it, left it out for awhile and then put it back into the freezer. i'm very careful not to tip the device so i'm not spilling water into the tubes. i'm not sure what's up with this but there are bigger problems i think.

i just took the unit apart for a thorough cleaning. 3 of the 4 metal tubes were sticky. one was very sticky the others just kind of sticky. now let's see...what in that vapor could be sticky??...hmmmm. there was also a buildup of some sort of gunk along the edge of the large metal tube. it was kinda thickish, pinkish but not sticky. i have no freaking idea what is going on but, at this point, i can't recommend this thing.

now that being said, i decided to try it with just water not ice. it works perfectly fine as a water tool. it's a bit less great at keeping me from coughing but it's 80% better than not using one.

the experiment continues!

@u bwade wunner . i love you DIY guys. i never DIY. ever. i buy everything. i could give a shit about saving a few bucks. store bought is best! except in this case. :)

Vapor leaves a sticky oil residue when it condenses. Cold will make vapor condense faster.

Thanks.I couldn't get one shipped to me anyway.

Yup vapor is just steam, cool it and it will return to liquid and condense inside the cooling device..less medicine & flavour but more reclaim.

at least reclaim is possible but I won't bother reclaiming from hose or a pipe.

I wanted to add that i have had different experiences with the iceborn as far as hitting it goes. a few times it will hit like a champ. i can easily inhale everything in my bag in 5 tokes. other times, it's restricted to a point that i really have to draw kind of hard to empty the bag in 8 or more tokes. i'm assuming it has to do with the ice not sitting right but i am very careful about filling the unit and placing it in the freezer as flat as it gets.

i'm using it as a water unit today. it works ok this way but drawing is a bit harder than when it was ice.

i'm amused if nothing else.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can edit the picture post above so I will attempt to replicate it again:
