Hello, this is my first post. I have had experience vaping for awhile now but never actually by myself. I am a very peaceful guy. I like to have a few hits here and there but it affects my cardio, which I undeniably care more about than vaping. I run about 5 miles early in the morning to clear my head and start the day off with a bang (I love the peace). I do have a longer run-day but I fail to see the relevance in my explanation of my routine. I understand that running and vaping would , to the average person, seem like it would NOT affect it. If anyone with experience doing HIGH intensity cardio ( not just a brisk jog) could shed light I would be thankful! My concerns are that , when you vape you always hold in your hit, right? Well could that possibly effect the way you pace your breaths during a run? I felt like the main thing that made my cardio suffer was that when I would use a bowl, I would hold the hit in. I felt like it affected my ability to take a deep breath whilst running. I actually smoked a bowl for a few years and I also ran the entire time (albeit a lot less) I hope one with experience can answer. I already understand that the cilia are not affected and that there are no air pockets destroyed . On a note to end this initial post, I would like to thank anyone who would be able to help me out- I know I am asking for a very specific response and I appreciate the effort on my behalf. I will also post a poll just for the heck of seeing what those who chose not to reply feel about vaping and cardio.

I already understand that the cilia are not affected . .

i have also read that people think this is the case , but i am un aware if there is any factual evidence for this . i would very much like to know if anyone has any links to evidence that the cilia really aren't effected by vaping . anyone ??

It helps for sure, but I do not in any way agree with the OP. Smoking in any form absolutely affects endurance performance and makes it hard due to the cilia being unable to move. I absolutely felt different than this man and the other testimonies are mostly from people who would not expend their need for air enough to know. Thanks.

"
and I never thought smoking herb hindered my training/racing all that much, especially since I'm not competitive anymore and do it because I like it and want to stay fit. "

So you read that whole thread and came to the conclusion that none of the respondents are qualified to help answer your question? If that is in fact the case, I suggest that this may be the wrong forum for you.

i used to compete in amateur boxing . what i learned really quickly in my first fight was that if you smoked you were taking a big chance of getting your ass kicked , when you ran outta wind . which meant smoking was a real big no no lol . especially when fighting only 3 ,3 minute rounds it was basically all out everything you got , if you ran outta gas before the other guy you were screwed . this was a long time ago like 20 +years but i would be pretty sure if i was to do it again that vaping would also be something that could cause you to run outta steam a little quicker as well lol but i should also say when i wasnt conditioning for a fight i used to absolutly love to get high and work out hitting the heavy bag or funny bag or what have you aww the good ole days lol

We have a member here called @lwien who is an avid runner (and a senior citizen :p) who will be able to give you some real good feedback on this.

Edit... LMAO!!! And look who just responded!

Thanks mom, but there are also other members who were active in that thread who are just as qualified to give this person some really good feedback. Why he/she feels that that thread is not where this question could be viably discussed is beyond me.

No I get that you were trying to show me that it is a good idea to look through the forum first before posting, but I did not see anyone saying anything that specifically resonated with me. Don't take it the wrong way!

@Cardiox - @lwien suggestion is a great one as this topic has been discussed a great deal and, if I remember correctly, there may have been some links to some studies as well.

I for one have always gotten high minutes before my exercise routines and that includes many prior decades of combustion. I also pull the vapor deep into my lungs and hold my breath, let some out and re-breath the hit over and over. If there is a deleterious affect I believe my inhalation method would be the best way to cause it. I have noticed that since I have turned strictly to vaping my cardio abilities and my lungs in general are in the best shape they have been in for decades. I'm 57 years old and have been exercising seriously and using herb as part of the process since I was 16.

I can't really answer your poll because I'm one of those 'literal' types and I feel the answer I would select is 'YES' it does affect my ability BUT in a positive way. So I can't answer the poll because something tells me you're poll is meant to ask whether vaping adversely affects your cardio. If my guess is correct by answering 'YES' because it affects me positively I would skew your results.

Since I have turned to vaping instead of combustion I have noticed that when running Fartleks my breathing is much better and my running is stronger. When strength training I make it a point to stress the cardio with limited breaks between reps AND doing higher rep counts, with lower weights, till failure. I used to get light headed before becoming a vapist and now I do not.

My results are based on smoking cigs till I was 40 and I've only been fucking combustion for about two years .... so ..... my take on the cardio improvement may be a case of selective perception since I can't compare to cardio without inhaling something first. Maybe we need a population that exercised without getting high and then made the switch to get a clearer picture.

As for boxing and martial arts ... did several types of training over the decades and while I would never get high before a match....I used to get blasted before spartan type training sessions and was always one of the last ones to fall out. It bares repeating though....I may have conditioned myself to perform this way since 16 and don't know anything else.

When I ran my first marathon after giving up the cigs people would ask 'doesn't it hurt after smoking cigs for so long' and I used to joke that 'After smoking a pack or more for so many years I was already used to being tired and out of breath so running didn't feel much different'.

if your talking high intensity (which amateur boxing would qualify) if you want the opinion of some one with high intensity exercising experience i would say yes it will effect your absolute threshold of maximum cardio ability YES

No I wasn't. There are so many threads here, many that have not been responded to in months and therefore would fall pretty deep into the forum lists that I would not expect someone to read through all of them to find out which one they should post in. I've just been here a long time and know the threads pretty well so I just thought that I'd help point you in the right direction. I was NOT trying to show you that it would be a good idea to look through the forum first.

Ok, enough of that, at least from me.

Iwien, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and great link. I just got turned off the moment I read that he did not have adverse affects while habitually smoking. I am guilty to reading only ten of the pages before deciding it did not have the level of information I needed. I also don't think it is that bad that I wanted to get some fresh ideas! I also asked a deeper question about the "deep inhale" of vapor. and @chris 71 , thank you for the response! @His_Highness I am very appreciative of your response. I read it and a lot of it resonated. Your view of the poll was also correct. I can take vaping to be harmless to cardio from the fact that vaping has IMPROVED your breathing! That answers the question of whether or not breathing deep can hurt performance. Also, it is amazing that you have stuck with it since 16! Thanks again.

I wouldn't go that far. While it may have improved his breathing, it may do just the opposite for you. We're all built a little different, eh.

My take is that inhaling any foreign substance into your lungs carries a certain amount of risk, even vapor, and that one must always weigh the risk/reward ratio when making this decision. While it can be said that the risk from vapor is very low, especially when compared to smoke, I think it is in error to say that it is "harmless". Same goes for how it affects cardio performance.

I am going to have to give it a trial then, which I feel may be AWESOME!

Suggest getting high just before the run. Getting high 30 minutes before the run can cause you to fight couch lock.

I like to get everything set - sneaks on, MP3 player ready, GPS watch synced, etc....then....I get high and then immediately turn on the running play list, start my stretch/warm-up and go. If it works the same for you as it does me - my mind and intensity are set by the music and mind/body reaction between the high and the music and warm-up. By the time I hit the pavement I'm already dancing internally.

Good Luck!

Edit: Forgot that some folks don't like to run with music. If you're one of those folks....give it a try as part of the warm-up. Eye of the Tiger kind of stuff works for me.

Arggg............my knees ache just thinking about stretching before a run and running on pavement both of which I don't do anymore. All my stretching is done after and I avoid pavement (cement) like the plague.

@lwien - I feel your pain...literally.... about the stretch. I gotta warm up my old bones with some mild jumping jacks, jogging in place kinda stuff first.

I think you run on a padded track if I remember correctly....sometimes I build up to some sensitivity, foot wise, and try to stay on the grass as much as I can till it passes which can take a couple runs. But the dreadmill and track running as a constant would drive my boredom to extremes and.....would increase my MJ use to fight it in a big way. Hey...wait a second...maybe you're onto something :brow:

Yeah, my warmup consists of walking and building up that walking speed for about 5 minutes before breaking into a run.

And yeah, my running is confined to a rubberized track or grass at the park with a few brief spurts on asphalt which is quite a bit softer than cement. I just think about cement and my knees ache. I think staying off of cement has helped me to run pain and injury free at 71 especially when carrying a weight of 220 a few years ago and 190 now.

I know that everyone I mention this to brings up the boredom factor but I just get into this zone where it doesn't affect me.

@lwien - that zone, for me, is when the MJ buzz and the runner's high combine. Basically I go into autodrive and everything and anything except running enters and occupies my mind. But even the zone might not consistently beat the monotony of a track for me if I ran on one all the time.

I don't remember if you get high or how high you get when running. I do remember that your tolerance is so low I'd need a microscope to see it. So maybe that's your saving grace. If it is .... I envy you big time.

I never vape before a run. For me, especially at my age, I feel that it's super important to be really in tune with my body when I'm running and while one can say that cannabis can help focus that attention, for me, it can also cloud it, which is exactly what I don't want to do.

BIG PROPS then! If I had to run around the track without a buzz I'd go nuts.

I have vaped with my buddy before I went on a run one time and I did not expect this, but it helped me enjoy the run a lot more. Other than that, I am going to have to say that running has been a routine that I prefer to be sober in due to the fact I like that it lowers my tolerance for the night. I have to give this a try again, though!

Well lets think on this for a while .......we not just talking vaping before we talking being high during .... what are the effects well one is able to focus into the running in a different way and if your lucky you get a runners high your legs will become jello..... and you be able to run forever.....

However Mortal heed my Warning.... make sure you stretch at least 10 mins per leg ......

We all know smoking is harmful but is vaping? Of course it is but no where near smoking. Introducing hot foreign substances into your lungs is never a good idea. Sure, marijuana opens your airways but that doesn't last long.

I quit smoking for 3 years. My lungs started feeling great and I wouldn't lose my breath as quickly as I used to. After the first year of quitting smoking I picked up vaping. Vaping DOES damage your airways. I could feel it after a week of vaping.

Normally people go from smoking to vaping and feel better so they believe vaping isn't doing any damage. I started vaping after having clean lungs for a year and I definitely noticed that vaping had a negative affect on my lungs.

Again, it is no where near as damaging as smoking and I believe as long as you exercise and vape in moderation you should be fine.
