I played one back in the day. I forget the name of it. I made a hand drawn map to help me navigate the text rendered world. Then I had a room in the wrong place and it all went to shit. It was some dungeon crawler and the name is going to drive me nuts now.

1. Battletoads every level was essentially a new experience and it had great graphics and music and played very well
2. Legend of Zelda, fun to replay today and still the best zelda game as far as zelda goes Imo, by that I mean it is open world more so than any other zelda game
3. Super Mario 3, great music and just fun game overall, great controls and great levels
4. Megaman 2, great controls, fun quick game, music is great, sprites look cool
5. FINAL FANTASY 3 OR 1, yes 3 wasn't released outside of Japam but it was still an amazing game especially for its time it was huge. FF1 doesn't need explanations.
6. Castlevania, fun game with cool bosses and challenging levels!

Looking back, Kid Icarus was ahead of its time for sure. It kind of gets overlooked when talking about all time greats. Cool game mechanics, kind of different like a platformer with shooter elements. Eggplant wizards gonna eggplant you

I loved the old NES system. I had to stop playing games once they went 3D; they made me sick to my stomach and dizzy. :\

Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros
Legend of Zelda
Willow
Castlevania II

Other that were played a lot...
Mortal Kombat
Blades of Steel
Boulder Dash

Maybe either Shadowgate or Deja Vu?

Anyone remember a game called Elite .. a kind of space trading game? I couldn't get my head round it at the time (too young) but my older brother loved it. Very ahead of its time

I believe that is it, I don't remember it but the "Elite" series just got revamped for the PC recently....from what I looked at about it, its like a sandbox open world space trading type of game. So that's probably a good guess. Don't think you actually have any objectives other than things you set for yourself.

There was a lot of really good games on NES, but maybe I just see that because of my age.

I mowed a lot of lawns to buy those games. Of course it took 3 months to save enough cash. Most new games are way too complicated for me to follow these days. I like the older stuff much better. Arcades seem to be going the way of the dodo bird too.

I will check out that emu website for ROM's.

Thank you for making this thread.

Argh, so hard, so hard :(

Rygar
Castlevania 3
Golgo-13 (I'm the only asshole who loves this game, the only one among my friends who can still beat it :p)
Contra (used to be able to speedrun this in about 15 minutes back in college)
Double Dragon 2

So many more that are up there, too....the mega man series, CV1 and 2, Zelda of course...

Emulation is great but if you still have a working nes I strongly encourage you to check out the Everdrive: http://shop.krikzz.com/ This is basically a flash cart for your console, so isntead of emulating you can play the game on the actual hardware with the proper timing and sound processing (no need to emulate mappers or sound chips). It's a little clunky at first, and some of the luxuries of emulating like save states aren't always available, but I'm convinced you can't get better than this!

If you have other consoles you may want to get the other offerings!
