Built in Defender and before Win 10 Security Essentials is all you need. (Free)
Apple products don't need.
Best Anti virus is you not clicking without thinking.
Up to date Modern Browser with Updated system that you use with critical thinking will get you what you want.

I have to give the +1 to a Linux based OS as well (but I dont think thats what hes asking) 
In that case - Win Defender (cause its free) and native to later windows OSes
Avast is decent, but like most 'free' standalone AV vendors, they are going to eventually become heavy with bloatware/adware/upgrade to the pro versionware.
But it both still work well IMO (and are cost effective) ~$0

I use Avast, too, but stopped updating the program last April at version 2015.10.2.2218 due to bloat. Am grateful for WinPatrol https://www.winpatrol.com/mydownloads/ (the free version will do what is needed and it's a great program, IMO), which I've set to block Avast from forcing upgrades.

AVG Antivirus Free - Minimum bloat and I've seen two IT consulting firms use it for their own builds and recommend I do the same when I set up a VM to work with them.
If you are using Comcast they provide Norton Security Suite for free.

I don't know about kiddie fiddler, but he's quite paranoid (I don't blame him). He was accused of making hard drugs on property in South America, then suspected of murder. He's got quite a few guns too.
He's about as insane as most of us Americans.

I'm thinking of possibly downloading Windows 10 since it has a free antivirus....good idea/bad idea? I suppose since it's free, I would somehow be the product like @Skyscraper says.

Watch the install. Make your own choices instead of default. You can ALWAYS turn stuff back on (location or Bing or whatever.) Update and don't click random links. You are the best anti virus.

Eh.. I was about to go on a tangent about social media sites and threw that comment in there. I don't know how much information an anti-virus software can collect on a person.

MSE & Malwarebyte installed with a router. Rootkits being more insidious than viruses. Otherwise Microsoft Firewall or Perhaps Zonealarm.
Avast and MacAfee free (EXE scan version), in case you get into real trouble.
