Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

@herbivore21 nice fold tek mate. Thank you for sharing. I started folding mine like that about 3 or 4 weeks ago.

I use buds that are about .3 and roll them into a sausage. My squish rig is a HMK clamp.

When I fold my paper I actually make a point at the end. This means I have a collection area out side of the plates.

The next folds are made so that the parcel is about 2mm wider than the sausage.

When I press the bud sausge ends up in a long rectangle shape and most of the rosin ends up away from the heat.
Nice one bro! I betcha the difference in our folding routes was just the fact that my press setup is squishing the bud on it's side, for some reason no oil ever collects below (in the folded angled tip), only above toward the opening (which is also outside of the plates).

Because my bud is in a sausage shape the whole point of the parcel is empty so there is room for rosin to collect there.

Hopefully I can upgrade to a higher psi set up like yours at some point. Can't decide on rectangle plates or round ones. It will depend on what's available locally.

I don't think I could stomach the shipping to Australia on @Joel W. plates but it still might be cheaper than local machine work.

Ok guys I am in a situation and need some help . I recently purchased a Dr Dabber boost which I absolutely love. As I am not in a legal state it makes more since health wise as well as financially to make my own product. I made some reclaim hash oil to use with my boost which is ok due to the fact I had never "dabbed" beforehand, but as you all know it taste like shit and most of you probably would not even consider using this to dab with :puke:. I made rosin one time probably about 6-8 months ago when it first really hit the net just to try but never did it again due to my difficulty of trying to get the wax off of the parchment paper (which I have now figured out) and not having a device to dab with. I am now ready to jump head first and that's where the issue lies. I am not looking for a high priced device for massive amounts at one time as this will be for personal use. I do not mind spending the money for a quality set up but am lost for what that set up might be? Also has anything drastically changed in the last half year? I have seen some mention of @Joel W. plates but cannot find a website. Also what are these rosin bags or 25u micro wraps you speak of? Are hair straighteners with a vice my best bet? What would give me the most bang for my buck? I apologize for all of the questions as I know most are repetitive but I have scowered though the last 25 pages and am just as confused as I was when I started if not more :hmm:. Thanks

That's not bad at all. Now it's gonna be hard to resist them.

At the moment I'm getting pretty good results but I think there is a little more rosin left in the pucks. Plus I'm sick of squeezing that clamp.

I squeezed a new strain the other day and after a 24hrs it turned to budder. Kinda cool because I hadn't seen it before but kinda hard to deal with compared to shatter. It smells awesome though.

Autobuddered rosin IME tends to taste sweeter than before :) Tends to be a result of higher terp content and higher ambient temp/humidity IME.

Go with @Joel W. my friend, you won't be disappointed :D

I haven't pressed anything in so long. Came across some bulk CO2 and flowers were too expensive lately :(

Are there any new cheap commercially ready to go presses out yet? Or am I honestly better with a hair straightener considering its 100% personal use.

This thread has come full circle, now I'm asking you guys whats up lol.

Also, where did we land on the fact that some people were re-hydrating with a drop of water. Got me thinking lately, you can get pure terps pretty easily these days. What if instead of a drop of water you were to use a single drop of _____ (insert various terps) to hydrate it? It would still be organic, but I imagine the resulting oil would be heavily flavored which could go awesome or terrible.

Anyone got some to try it?

The trick is finding out the heat activation temp in the terps themselves, then its all about what kind of heat your trying to use.

Example.

D-lim's boiling point is 348 F.
So as long as your not pressing at over 348 F (I Hope nobody is pressing at this really anyways to begin with), your end result from pressing will always have the d lim terp.

(Someone please school me on this if I'm wrong)

Thats what I was figuring I want to try eucalyptol, from what I remember most terps have boiling points of 250f +

Some DMT flower press. 4.5g press not sure what exact yield was but it yielded real well. 200f pressed till it stopped flowing. No rehydration needed.

That wasn't full yield in the pic haha.

That's interesting because I experience the exact opposite with my rosin! Maybe it is because the bud I am squishing is really fresh, but I think it tastes exactly like it smells right after I make it, compared to a couple days later when it has auto buttered. Don't get me wrong, the butter still tastes amazing but I feel like the slap across the face flavor hit is when it is sappy right off the press :D

I think variations in terpene content, temp/pressure of press, local barometry, temperature and relative humidity are all going to play a role in the differences we are noticing here ;)

I literally meant the term sweeter to mean a sweet flavor too. Not in the colloquial and more general sense. I would not say that the autobuddered rosin has a better flavor necessarily. Just different versions of the same niceness. I really don't liked the autobudder consistency though, it is hard to make a dab sundae with full melt with it lol

Ahh I get what you are saying and I edited my post because I meant to say that it tastes more like it smells when it is right off the press. Definitely not necessarily better, just different tasting like you said!

Do you think that terps change or partially evaporate (or something ) at room temp which could be a cause of the slight flavor change?

Understandable confusion brother, I shoulda been clearer in the first post ;)

Terps will definitely partially evaporate (or even degrade/oxidate into other compounds) in various kinds of material at room temp over time, especially depending on how it is stored and which terps are present (some are more volatile at lower temps than others) and local conditions. Flavor will also change due to changes in other compounds within the cannabis/extract (these will vary depending on the original content of the given sample).

Thanks for the info as always! That is some interesting stuff.

Speaking of depending on how it is being stored, I remember reading one of your posts the other day and you said that you don't put oil directly in non stick containers anymore? IIRC I believe you said you put it in parchment and then into the container (and maybe one other way?). Is parchment safer than non stick? Or does the silicone container alter the oil more than the parchment?

Depends on the parchment and the container. I consistently find nasty white residue that accumulates on oil that has been in a silicone container long term. This is as true of rosin as of solvent based shatters. I consume very terpy rosins and predominately full melt these days so I am dealing with consistencies that are entirely different to what I started out working with. I am still not 100% happy with anything yet for rosin, ideally I'd prefer something inert for storage, glass or quartz or something. I have some ideas for future storage possibilities that might serve the purpose of being inert but being easy to get all of your earl out of without solvents, but those will require prototypes and time that I do not have right now... I use glass jars for full melt and only dry my hashes on glass (I have a custom designed hash drying machine that can heat multiple glass shelves up to any temp I want between room temp and 200f). These are perfect for the application!

For rosin (and instead of parchment), I only use oil slick slick wrap inside glass jars for storage, as I have not yet found it to impart a residue onto oil stored in it like the silicone containers. Slick wrap differs from other parchments because it is a silicone and cellulose matrix with foil backing, rather than being a non stick layer on top of different materials or all silicone etc. I find it holds up to storage use much better than other materials, and the non-stick efficacy is superior to other parchments. It is not perfect for squishing, but it is the best current option I've found for that too - the foil works wonders! Also it folds way better. Still, other parchments may be good too. Just avoid anything quilon based or whose surface seems to degrade under storage only usage with no aggressive scraping with metal tools etc.

Looks like I need some slick wrap and glass jars :D I have also noticed that white residue you are describing in longer term storage. The few times I have noticed it, the oil buttered up so I always just thought it was from the autobutter. Good to know!

You won't be disappointed my friend! :) Also the white residue is definitely not limited to autobudder situations. I've consistently seen it (in fact more than with any other kind of extract) with sub-micon filtered, winterized solvent shatters.

I don't see why plates with this surface shape would improve performance.

Granted, that's not a good reason to discount the idea, but the claimed yield from that press was roughly 20 percent (they didn't give any specific numbers). They consider that to be an impressive yield, but that's pretty average around here.

I've had returns of over 20% from bottom shelf dispensary flower, using my flat faced blocks and arbor press. @Joel W. gets well over 20% using his flat faced blocks and vice.

Until there are reproducible results that exceed what is possible with the current technology, I don't see any reason to move to non-flat plates.

I've had the best results pressing with the enchilada technique. The puck extends to the very edges of the block, and the rosin gets pushed out and away from the heat because there's no free space between the blocks for it to dwell.

A specially countoured press surface would ideally be countoured all the way to the edges, since pressed pucks will ideally be the same size as the pressing surface.

Would have liked to seen that puck just out of curiosity.

My last vid I posted was 21% and that was low for homegrown.

With enough moisture in the herb, I can get my pucks about .015-.020" thick and well, that's pretty thin. Flat works for me. ;)

I noticed only 20% thats not something to hype about especially with their "frosty" strain. I don't like the idea so far unless it improves something my tech doesnt already do for me like getting heat off my rosin flow... they said something about less effort is this because of less surface area because of the indentation(is the spot made to get more pressure then the flat)? If that was the case wouldn't it be like they were using plates just big enough to press a tiny nug to increase the pressure? Im bout to to do a press sesh with flats I should hit over 20% this strain squirts even with 300 lb trigger clamp and 1 in straightner (wife doesnt like to run the vice when im not around)

The funny thing is Some commercial rosin makers have gone back to their hair irons after using different model presses. The hair iron c clamp/vice is still highly ranked in my book.

Okay update on press sesh I didnt hit 20% I hit 19.4% only was because I tried to readjust a puck after expansion, I misplaced it, it hit the ground where the was some slight saw dust from a ptoject earlier I had forgot to sweep up. I probably lost 10%-15% of .7gs.

I did that at fraction of time it would take their lil nug big glob. Also I used an impact drill with high torque to press, my elbow has been messed up from work so I haven't been able to get my highest psi from doing it manually. I tap the trigger slowly to press the rosin away instead of slamming it quick so I can get rosin off the puck with ease.

I totally agree. If anyone doesn't have the space or cash to step up to a vice/press setup with plates, then doing the straightener + clamp method is still a big step up in function compared to plain straighteners. Just rip the heaters out and fix them on the clamp (suggest Irwin 600lb grip clamp). It allowed me to squash 'like' people do with presses (not as much pressure obviously, but it let me squash at 200-240f for 1 minute instead of 320f for 3 seconds, much better result and easier to handle).
