So today I got my self funded Christmas/New Years gift, a brand new Aura from your friend and mine, Randy. I couldn't pass up his great introductory discount.......once again. He knows how to get my money for sure.

After a full charging (confirming the battery is indeed 2600 mAh (in fact 2666 in this case)) I'm doing the traditional burn offs and poking around with it some. A couple of points of interest to some folks:

While the oven is similar to other models, I don't think it's the same. If you look carefully you can see the heater element in the walls, a serpentine deposited film (I think) just below the surface. Imbedded in the ceramic which may explain the faster heat up time (heat doesn't have to come through the entire wall thickness). It comes without a bottom screen (as newer versions seem to be?) but this one also comes with 2 of the larger 8 sided screens forced into the earlier units. If you wanted to you could no doubt press one in with a 3/8 dowel or even a new wood pencil. I opted for a cut down SS mesh screen to avoid problems removing it later.

It comes with two 'pods', one for herb, the other concentrates. Same units that fit their other vapes.

Those who have problems with the airpath 'flowing over the electronics' will not like this one I fear, despite the advertising "Fully Isolated Air Path" (their spelling, I guess they like capitals....) it is clearly not the case. You can hear 'wind' whistling through the charge port on the bottom with a heavy hit, blocking it with your finger definitely has an effect. If you gently blow in the MP, the inside of the window fogs up.....pretty conclusive to me the isolation isn't real.

You can do an interesting experiment with it that shows how the display 'lies' a bit to you. As it's heating up sucking (or blowing) on the MP drops the indicated heat maybe 15 or 20 degrees F even though the heater is on 'full blast' at the time. It 'goes backwards' for several seconds, cooling off, only to recover when the air stops. Once it 'makes temperature', and the very Ascent like 'steaming bowl' icon is lit, the display no longer shows the drop even though it's surely still happening. The display stays 'stuck' on the target temperature. Programmers call this 'masking' (hiding details). Otherwise I guess folks would complain?

The MP is entirely new. No threads any more (except the cap holding the screen), the MP is held in place by o-rings and can be rotated at will. Ed's gonna have some fun making a wood stem for this one I bet. I'm not sure how you'd link it to a WT, the standard FM adapter isn't going to work without threads. And the 'whistle tip' MP is real wide and narrow, rubber tube isn't going to be much help I think.

It's slightly larger in diameter, but much lighter than the similar FM V3.0 (3.6 ounces against 4.9). Even though the battery in the Aura is twice as large (1330 mAh against 2666 in my testing). The plastic body is also much better with 'heat management' than the V3. The body below the oven stays quite cool (and with it the electronics and battery inside.....which is better for both) rather than getting 'too hot to hold' like the V3 does with extended use. Another big plus IMO.

Once the burn offs are done, I'll get to some real testing......got the herb all lined up. I don't, however, expect much difference there given the similarity to other FM products 'where it counts'.

Thanks for your kind attention.

Mini question: My mini arrived today. I charged it and did a burn off on it's high temp. It has an auto turn off in 5 minutes. I just went to do another burn off and it won't turn on. It's recharging right now. Is 5 minute battery life normal for the mini?

No, absolutely not. Over an hour normally?

Did you fully charge first thing like the instructions say?

Yes- charged most of the day about 6 hours. I'll leave it charging overnight and try again.
How many burn offs do you usually do?

Bummer. You might have a DOA......well not dead exactly, but mighty sick.

Good luck with it.

The number of burn offs needed is very subjective. Not only might we differ in what we call 'clean and ready to use' but often the exact same model from the exact same source can take a larger number (or smaller) than the next. I have two Minis, one was 'no problem at all' the other drove me nuts for a while. Luck of the draw there I guess.....my standards were the same, one just had more fingerprints and stuff I guess. Rubber parts can be a big variable here. Some 'tennis shoes' stink more than others when new.

Damn @OF! :D You should really post your reviews in the dedicated threads! I tried to summon you in the FM Air one after you did your review here, but for now we have no Aura thread (we do have one for the Aura hybrid though, but it's completely different)

Could you please consider creating the Aura thread and copy/pasting your review there? I think it would be better for clarity as this thread is already about a large number of variants and more are coming obviously.

@little maggie : don't know what the button sequence is with the Mini after a time-out, but in the others you need to hold the power button for about 5 seconds in order to relaunch a new cycle. Otherwise the device stays in standby mode with the LED off (you can check if it's the case by briefly pressin the on button and it will blink the LED)

By the way it happened to me a lot of times to forget that the device was in standby and leave it this way, but this drains the battery! You need to explicitely turn it off with the 5 presses sequence, otherwise next time you will try to use it you will be greeted by the low battery LED code.

Sure, glad to. If I knew how I'd try? I don't find a 'thread candidate' thread (an interesting 'chicken and egg' thing in itself....). I agree there is little consistency it seems. Many threads (like say Persei) have lots of models mixed together. Others, like say Da Vinci have threads for each model.

First off thanks for reading, I bought the flowermate v5 about a week ago to go cold turkey off combustion and so far so good. It gets the job done; definitely different but all change is I suppose. Being a very novice vaporizer I have 2 questions about the device itself, 1. Do you consider it safe/well made- does it vaporize on any of the temperature settings at a level that's truly better for me than smoking?

2. I notice every time I take a drag from it or I tilt it a bit the whole pack slides up and largely stops vaping until I unscrew it and pack it back down. I've seen people online attaching them to glass upside down and I feel like that would barely work. Is the pack jostled and moving around every time you take a drag? I just don't know what's going on inside this thing and want to know more about it. Hope that makes sense to someone.

First off, howdy, welcome to the Forum and the fun. Lots of good folks around as you know from your reading.

Congratulations on your decision to dump blazing and switch to vaping. FM is, I believe, a great tool for that and has no abnormal health issues itself. An excellent choice. Normal temperatures on the FM (or other vapes) are all about the same health wise and in an entirely different category from blazing. Try them all, most folks like the lower ones in the end I think? The temperatures are lower here, none of the really nasty components of smoke are formed. This means you get to live longer vaping, the better to enjoy it with. And, because you're not using precious herb to build a fire to heat other herb (destroying the very THC we crave.....) it's way more efficient....WAY more. Expect your weed bill to drop to something like 1/3 your current level. Honestly. You can move up to top shelf bud and still save a lot of money (to buy your next vape of course).

Once you really 'break free', don't backslide into blazing even once. First off you'll rediscover how truly nasty smoking is and you'll reestablish the mental link between all that nasty, dangerous stuff and getting off. You don't really need that, your mind just thinks it does. You'll see.

Sounds to me like you're loading it too loose. This too can come from blazing experience. Here's why:

FM (and probably most other vapes) works by conduction. That is the walls of the tube get heated to the preset temperature. This heat (in calories, not degrees, heat energy) gets transferred to the herb touching the walls raising it's temperature (in degrees) until it matches the walls. As this is going on heat energy is also being transferred deeper into the load, also basically by conduction. Contact is the key.

After a certain point (say 350F?) heat (energy, in calories, not degrees) is also used to convert THC (and other good stuff) to vapor, faster still at higher temperatures. This is what we want. This means that as the temperature gets up further (to say 390F) more and more vapor is being formed (and also condensing back). Drawing the vapor off is the goal. But, unlike blazing, it only forms slowly and actually slows down a bit rather than speeding up like happens in blazing due to more air to 'feed the fire'. Here more (cold) air simply robs heat that would otherwise make more vapor. Try sipping on it, I think you're hitting it too hard. Try it, you'll find the hit is cooler and 'richer' (more vapor). And you won't be sucking the load around as much inside.

Next time you load, pack it in a bit. Not enough to make sucking air through difficult be enough to push more herb into firm contact and improve contact within the load. That should, along with sipping, keep the load in place although you should at the start be filling it completely anyway.

The first heating should also fuse the load together some, depending on the nature of the material. BTW keep the load on the dry side, moisture inside creates extra fouling and mess. Doing so can greatly increase the number of loads between cleanings.

That should get you started. Play around with it some, what works best for one guy might not suit the next. It's all good as the saying goes. Come back and let us know how it's going, there's lots of learn if you want to.

Soon you'll be back with 'what new vape should I get?'.......hopefully. Lots of good choice there.

Best wishes,

OF

Edit: Another thing you might try is opening it up (even hot) and use a toothpick or something suitable to stir the load up some and repack it down (to a smaller volume by a bit). This puts fresher herb in better contact with the heated walls and can 'breathe new life' into the next hits. And it's a good learning experience I think, it gives useful insight and works with some other vapes.

Cheers,

OF

Herb gardener...
Slow and steady wins the race...

And gets you higher....

I slowly pull on it for 10 secs, maybe more...this makes nice tasty clouds,,, then I put my finger over the mouthpiece for 20/30 secs, and go again...

Like @OF says, suckling hard will only cool your element and block your mouth piece.

Good luck,, stick with it....

I got some good news from my Smiss contact!

Firstly, I had a friend just order a FM5-Pro directly from the factory, he received it two days ago and was able to use it out of the box (after the initial charge of course) and without doing any empty burn-ins! I asked him whether he noticed any robot fart smell and he said no, pure taste right from the go.

I asked some confirmation from my contact and she said that indeed they were able to source a different polyimide tape for the insulation and it resolved the smell problem. Seeing this was my #1 complaint about this vape, this is much welcome.

The other good news is that they brought the Mini-Pro test samples to CES. Once the tradeshow is over they will make some pre-production units but they want to do it right this time, meaning they won't send "too early" versions like they did for the FM8 (I think the glue incident hurted that vape reputation...)

I might be able to get my hands on one and do a thorough test and review.

Has anyone tried the Concentrate tanks??? I wanna see how good they are, but if someone talked about it yet then it'd be great to hear about it

also did anyone order the improved airflow v5.0s??

Judging by this picture they took out the removable screen on the bottom and I want to know how good it is, as it only has 5 holes..

The original design with the removable screen only had 5 holes, too. It's the same thing, so I imagine it'll be the same, minus the screen, which a lot of people were already taking out. They just saved us a step.

Don't you guys have weed fall into those holes or clog them up if you remove the screen? Sometimes my weed gets a little dusty.

I asked that question earlier in the thread. The response tended to be "On most models, there's nothing under there, it's just clear airflow.".

Sorry man. Man be to earlier that I read this and not vaped.

I don't think I understand clearly. If there is nothing under the holes but clear airflow, if you dusted your weed or had dust come off your pot, could it not clog these jokes or fall underneath in the holes?

It comes with screens to put in the chamber but they don't fit in tight so you can put them in and take them out easily which makes it easier to keep clean and retain airflow. It's a vast improvement on the originals.

Ah okay. That now makes sense. Cause I'm personally a micro doser. Sometimes I put more bud than I usually need but sometimes I like little amounts and keep re adding so that I never waste. I use to find that on my Vapir rise I wouldn't be able to finish my load. So now I just use less

I'm curious about how FM advertises on http://flowermateusa.com/index.php/flowermate-vaporizers.html. Specifically saying things like "isolated airpath" and "medical grade materials". Is there any truth to these claims? From reading through this thread that doesn't seem to be the case.

I've been using a v5s for a few days now, and really like it but reading the internetz is starting to make me think I should have just gotten a higher end device and I wouldn't be worrying about it now.

The airpath on the V5.0s isn't exactly fully isolated in that it passes some of the electronics and the battery but it is considered safe. There's a lot of discussion about the design and safety aspects from the early pioneers at the start of the thread. Give them a read if you have any concerns. Enjoy it, it's a great vape!

I can second what was said above me. It's the perfect size for on the go, or a quick vape on the couch in the morning. My EQ is still definitely my daily driver, but I have zero regrets about buying my flowermate! Maybe I'd go with the v5 instead of the pro, if only for the fact that the temps I generally use are the presets. I do really love the temp range and adjustability of the pro, though!
