Best Quality Edible Recommendations In Cali Dispensaries...

So I'm thinking about trying some edibles to mix things up a bit and to help with Insomnia. I only want top quality edibles where the dosage is fairly accurate and are made by trusted edible manufacturers.. Bhang Chocolate and Kiva chocolate have caught my eye. Has anyone used those? Any other Recomondations?

Being that I'm new to edibles I do have some questions:

1) In general how long does it take to become fully medicated?
2) approximately how long do the effects last?
3) does anyone use edibles for sleep and pain relief? If so how long before bedtime should you consume?
4) empty or full stomach? Or does it matter?
5) if you already have a moderate vaping tolerance does that mean you automatically have a moderate tolerance with edibles? Or do you still need to start with a low dose?

The Kiva chocolates come in 45mg doses and I think Bhang comes in 30 mg doses. I'm uncertain what dose I should start with..

Thanks guys!

Everybody is different with edibles. It takes anywhere from an hour to three hours to kick in. I do use edibles at times for pain, sleep and anxiety. I usually need over 100 mg of THC. We have different brand names here in WA than what you have in Cali.

You will have to experiment with small amounts in the beginning. I take my edibles 3 - 4 hours before bed. I don't eat a large evening meal.

Probably an empty stomach then eat a meal after an hour. You might want to wait a few hours before bed. A full stomach before bed isn't good either.

For me the effects from edibles depends on how much I've eaten, I overdid it on an ABV milkshake once and the effects lasted for over 24 hours. You just want to sleep and be pain free you don't want a cannabis hangover the next morning. It could be trial and error. Start slow especially if you have work. You may need a clear mind to work and drive.

@CarolKing ... You're probably right that I should start slow. Maybe just a 30mg dose just to see how that goes. How many milligrams did you start with? I only want to use edibles at night so work and driving will not be issues..so would you say you usually start to feel medicated in about an hour, but it may take up to 3 or 4 hours for full effect?

Do you ever combine vaping with edible consumption? I'll probably refrain from vaping at the same time until I've had 2 or 3 doses of edibles so I know how it affects me. I don't want to overdue it!

And lastly, do you ever get edible hangovers or do you feel well rested and clear in the morning? Other than your 24 hour milkshake fiasco..

Probably try not to vaporize when you are trying to test out how you do. I can take over 100mg THC before I notice a medicated effect. Since you are a regular cannabis user 30mg you'd probably be safe.

It usually takes 2 - 3 hours for me, for the THC to take effect.

Being that I'm new to edibles I do have some questions:

1) In general how long does it take to become fully medicated?

  • 60-90+ minutes is common, but certain edibles held under the tongue and then ingested can be as quick as 15-30 minutes because sublingual absorption is faster acting.

2) approximately how long do the effects last?

  • All in the dose! Longer than inhalation. The groggy afterglow can last a long time for high doses. I've definitely experienced 12+ hrs of effects for very high doses (100-500mg of hash)
3) does anyone use edibles for sleep and pain relief? If so how long before bedtime should you consume?
  • Edibles can put you to sleep very effectively, especially heavy indica strains. Timing would probably depend on the dose. 3-6 hrs would be a ballpark.
4) empty or full stomach? Or does it matter?
  • Edibles are affected by first pass effect, so some argue that a small-ish fatty (saturated ideally) meal before an edible increases absorption efficiency. Having said that I've had great success with an empty stomach too.
  • I've found an empty stomach works faster, but with a fatty meal it lasts longer.

5) if you already have a moderate vaping tolerance does that mean you automatically have a moderate tolerance with edibles? Or do you still need to start with a low dose?

  • You still want to start with a low dose but a moderate vaping tolerance will mean at least a mild edible tolerance.

The Kiva chocolates come in 45mg doses and I think Bhang comes in 30 mg doses. I'm uncertain what dose I should start with..

I'd start with 30-45mg. You might end up preferring 50-75+.

My favorite edibles around california-
KushyPunch
NorCal Confections
Bhang bars (CBD fav)
Korova Bars
CBD oil capsules (Evolution Extracts are my fav but they're 300mg each...helloooo sleep!)

@SD_haze, thanks for the detailed response..I suppose it will take a little trial and error to zero in on the right dose... I'll probably start at the 25mg to 50mg to start as I feel my tolerance is high enough to not get over medicated at that level. After some experimentation I will pump up the dose to get that ridiculously strong body high that I seek

It's interesting that you say to consume 3 to 6 hours before your usual bedtime. So are you saying that even though you general start feeling the effects within an hour or so it takes up to 6 hours to reach peak levels where you're unable to ward off sleep. So in essence you can enjoy the building high from like 1 to 4 hours and then crash when it peaks?

Kushy Punch seems to be a quality product. There's also a product called Sensi Chews that seems to be popular in the local dispensaries. Kiva and Bhang chocolate as well. The problem with Kiva and Bhang is they are all hybrid and I want to go full on Indica for my nighttime needs. Left Coast in San Diego has Sensi, Kushy Punch and Kiva. I think I'll give those a try.

I was wondering have you found that tolerance shoots up significantly with edibles like it does with dabbing too often? I love to do big dabs on an oil rig when I really want to get ripped, but I limit dabs to maybe 3 or 4 times a month so it won't have any significant effect on tolerance.. I know so many people that dab so frequently that they really can't get high on weed anymore haha..

The Korova bars look good too, but on their website they say you have to refrigerate them. I'm not sure if that's the case with Kushy Punch and Bhang and Kiva chocolates.. The reason I ask is I have a 10 year old daughter in the house and she loves chocolate. Even if I hid them in the back of the refrigerator, I would still be a little worried about it and my wife probably wouldn't think it's a smart idea either...So do most of the edibles require refrigeration or not?? Thanks Haze...

  • The timing situation is an interesting balance. On one hand it may be easier to fall asleep at the peak - more around 3 hours. On the other hand, I find I have a more satisfying/substantive sleep when I fall asleep more sober, after the peak (and usually after a big munchie meal ;)).
  • Kushy Punch is definitely quality. The Indica, CBD, and TKO variations are all great for insomnia. They're handy because they're split in 4 quarters.
  • Tolerance can be a real gray area. I'm a daily dabber but I still feel like I get plenty medicated every day. I notice a tolerance with edibles but balancing it with vaporizing sessions evens it out pretty effectively
  • I see what you mean about the korova & fridge. Makes sense because it has eggs in it while gummy candy & chocolates do not. Not a big loss so no worries there

:2c:
& hope you survived the 2nd day of floods!! haha

Korovas are really fucking strong. An important thing to remember is that even among the high end edibles, dosage is not always comparable. 1/3 of a 3 dose korova (the whole bar is 150mg, so 1/3 is 50mg) has me REELING, while I can handle a Kiva square fairly well. Not all starting material is equal. If you're looking to be as careful as possible I would stick with the Cheeba Chew brand, as I have found it to be almost uniform in effect from edible to edible.

Agreed. The mg dosage is not 100% comparable between different companies/products. It's a relative gauge that's better than nothing.

Could be 100mg of flower trim, or 100mg of topshelf shatter.

For me, edibles have a niche in circumstances where your consumption needs to be virtually invisible. Otherwise I find inhalation, with a commitment of a couple hours, more convenient than edibles, with a buzz that lasts several hours. Maybe high cbd might be different. Digestion converts thc into a different drug, 11-hydroxy, which is quite potent. Dosing with edibles is all over the map, as recent studies have shown. I've tried some of the commercial edibles, but I believe my doses are more consistent from making my own from my ever growing pile of abv. Dosing is the key with edibles, IMO.

I strongly recommend the black cheeba chews (indica) if you are looking for sleeping aid and pain relief. I have tried bhang, korova, kiva, all the top shelfs. But out of all the recognizable names, cheeba chews are the only ones that have strict indica. Bhang, korova, and others are all hybrids and can find that some make me racy. I eat half for functional high and a full one if I need some pain relief.

Korova is my go to brand for club edibles, they work extremely well. Only thing that I don't like is that I have to eat a ton of sugar with those. So I prefer to make my own capsules.

Yeah man, crazy amount of rain for us.. I used to live in PB where the flooding was always extreme...

So I picked up some Kush Punch Hybrid( they were out of Indica). That's okay though I vape hybrids and even sativa dominant at night and although a little heady at first, I've found hybrids to be good relaxants as well as sleep inducing. Might be different with edibles.. We shall see. I also picked up a dark chocolate Kiva bar to try out and an eighth of Moon Rocks!

I'll start with a quarter of the Kushy Punch 25mg, then I'll wait an hour and half or so and if I don't feel medicated enough I'll take another 25mg.. My gut feeling is my dose should be 50mg to 75mg, but I want to error on the side of caution being that I'm new to edibles:tup:.

I like what you said about tolerance in that if you mix it up between flowers, dabs and concentrates you can in general keep your tolerance in check. That's exactly what I want to do. Another issue is that I sometimes get a dry irritated throat from vaping too much flower and mega hits. It will be nice to add in more edibles and dabs for variety!

@YungLeaner I'll have to pick up some Chebba Chews next dispensary run and give them a go!

@hoptimum My measuring and cooking skills are not my strong suit. Actually, I think my chances of over medicating would be much higher if I were to make edibles versus buying from established edible makers haha...Also, I plan to use edibles only at night so if I make a mistake on dosing I have 8 hours or so to get straight, but I agree with you that inhalation is much easier to control dosage. Just last week I was partying with a couple heavy concentrate users and did 3 fat dabs of some bomb Moxie. Probably .2g within an hour. Way too much for my tolerance level.I was totally plastered and way to high for my tolerance level, but two hours later I came back to earth. If I over did it with edibles in the day time I could be out of commission for 8 hours or so haha..

@mixchu69 another Cheeba fan hey.. I have to try next time. You say that hybrid edibles make you a little racy? Do you find that hybrid flowers or concentrate give you the same feeling? That has not been my experience as I find that both Indica and hybrids less than 60% sativa to be similar as far as relaxation and ultimately a sedative effect. On the other hand a pure sativa like Super Silver Haze will give me a little nervous energy which is more conducive to daytime use. I think it's basically a personal biochemistry issue..I think.

@Watusay i too don't like a lot of added sugar in my medicine or food..What I like about the chews is that although they are made with corn syrup(the bad kind of sugar), they only have like 15 calories and 3 grams of sugar per 50mg. A pretty insignificant amount in my view. Unless, of course, you're chomping on them all day long.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll consume my Kushy Punch tonight and report back..

Kiva floats my boat. Although it is a hybrid it can pretty much lock me to the couch if I am not careful. I use about 1/3 of a 45mg square. Anything more and I just fall asleep.

edit: Just tried some Liquid Gold and it feels "sativa like"... makes me want to clean up the house and walk to the park :p I like it but prefer to be a little more relaxed.

So I dosed 25mg of Kushy Punch on Thursday night. Gave me a nice mellow buzz within about an hour, but I felt I needed more to achieve an adequate medicated effect and to help with sleep so I ate another 25mg for a total of 50mg. About 45 minutes later it hit me hard with a nice head high and a strong body high. I slept great that night:zzz:. Kushy sure does pack a punch! I think 50mg is the right dose for my current tolerance. That said, I wasn't too impressed with the flavor, it tasted like strong cannabis more than I thought it would. However, after sucking on the taffy a while I kind of got used to it and there was just enough sugar to tame it a bit..Overall I'd say Kushy Punch is a great product! The package contained 100mg of medicine conveniently divided into four 25mg doses so easy to dose for all tolerance levels. Shout out to @SD_haze for the recommendation

Edibles are different in that you don't get instant gratification as you do with vaping or smoking. It's kind of fun having that nervous anticipation of how high you'll get when it kicks in fully haha..

To all you experienced edible people. Do you usually take your full dose all at once or do you build up in two or three doses? For instance, if you feel your needed medication level is like 100mg, do you take 50 mg wait an hour or so and take the other 50mg? Or would you take the full 100mg all at once? I'm thinking it might be better to spread out the dose so you won't get stomach upset or nausea. IDK if that's even a concern with edibles?

@Heliroll I actually did purchased a dark chocolate Kiva bar, but probably won't get to try until Monday. That great that you could get lifted on 1/3 of a 45mg dose..I'll probably take at least a 45mg square as I want to get medicated enough for sleep.

When I was in washington I was unable to find Cheeba Chews, but I did try a variety of other edibles, including soda, breath strips, cookies, bon-bons, and tootsie rolls.

Maybe they haven't aged well, but I am unimpressed with the tootsie rolls and bon bons (Sorry, I removed them from the wrappers so I don't recall the brand, but I believe all the washington edibles are capped at 25mg. I thought that the pomegranite soda was very nice, as well as the breath strips. There is a company called Goodship that makes cookies. And their Snickerdoodle cookies taste incredible and I felt dosed pretty nicely.

Next chance I get (probably with edibles I make) I want to go real deep with edibles and get a nice psychoactive experience. I try to go a little uncomfortably deep with my edibles. I know alot of people don't care for that, but I think its good to be pushed outside of my comfort zone.

I'd eat the full edible dose at once, but maybe slowly over 30 minutes.

Kushy Punch does have a heavy flavor. If you can ever find Norcal Confections, they are the best tasting gummy I've ever had in my life (including medicated and non-medicated)

@SD_haze those NorCal gummies look yummy! So frosty! That would be great if they were actually coated with trichomes or rolled in kief rather than sugar haha.. I think a certain amount of sugar is needed to tame the strong cannabis flavor though... Are they as strong as the Kushy Punch?

In a previous post You mentioned CBD capsules from Evolution Extracts. Now are those pure CBD or are they balanced with a good amount of THC as well? I do like a heavy body and relaxation, but also like to get lifted with strong psychoactive effects from THC before ultimately crashing out..

Norcal Confections is 175mg of shatter oil per little piece. So it's stronger than most of the kushy punch varieties. Besides the TKO.

Evolution extracts makes capsules with different strains and they all have different CBD ratios.
The cannatonic is my favorite but the SFV OG was probably heaviest.

I think he does make 100mg caps but I've only ever seen the 300mg.

@Chill Dude Yeah, I am a lightweight when it comes to edibles. I tried a Korova bar once and it knocked me out, chuckle. I tend to use edibles when I need to sleep (got multiple medical problems).

@SD_haze I'll look for the Evolution Extracts 100mg caps. I don't think I'm ready to step up to the 300mg caps.. That's the big leagues haha..

I'm really liking the Kiva Blackberry Dark Chocolate Bars. I just do the standard 45mg dose, but it def packs a punch. The high comes on strong in about an hour..... head and body as its a hybrid. I'm usually ready to crash about 2.5 hours after consumption. It really helps me sleep through the night.. I'm reaching that age where men experience the 3:00 am wake up call LOL.. What I like about edibles vs vaping is that when I wake up to piss at 3:00 I'm still kind of stoned with a somewhat heavy body high so it's easy to drift back to sleep quickly.. Vaping, while it really helps in initiating sleep is not as effective when you wake up in the middle of the night.. I'm kind of a light sleeper and I've found edibles or dabs to be the most effective when I need to get that 7 or 8 hour sleep...
