Warranty issue with grinder

I purchased a SC "Ti" medium 2 piece grinder from a reputable retailer & after a months use it has some pretty major chipping. I have sent through my warranty claim to the seller of the SC "Ti" but they won't be back until the new year & I am hoping they will resolve it. It does seem pretty defective to me at least.




On the flipside this does mean new grinder time & I am down to three contenders in two configurations & pricing is before any discounts. Not massively concerned when it comes to price as this will be a once a decade kind of purchase.

3 piece: SCS small or the Kannastor Vape GR8TR ($80, $100)
4 piece: SCS small, Compton medium or Kannastor GR8TR ($100, $100 & $140)

Any thoughts on what to get? Particularly keen to hear any Kannastor or Compton owners opinions as I know the SCS is held in high regard round here.

I can't identify any chipping from the pic. I hope you weren't expecting that 'titanium' finish to be scratch proof.

I would expect a titanium coating to be scratch proof. Obviously I need to do some more reading. What is the reason for coating a grinder in titanium?

@max & @MinnBobber maybe I am confusing scratching with chipping? I don't expect an anodized coating to scratch off inside a month when it is only grinding 1-2g a day of broken up bud. Maybe after a year or two of heavy work sure I would expect signs of wear & tear.

I have scrubbed putrid anodized aluminium bong stems with scouring pads & it took years for the anodizing to wear away. This has taken 3 weeks to achieve



I am not a paranoid man by any means but am slightly concerned as to where the coating has gone if it has scratched/chipped off. If this is the usual & what is expected from "ti" coated grinders then I suppose it is a case of buyer beware. @Poostuff I understand it is coated in "titanium" to reduce friction & make it easier to keep clean. I am also annoyed that I put more research into buying a $40 grinder than I did buying a $40k car .

@steama I am not angling to get a new grinder or refund if it is considered normal wear & tear. Far from it but I have not seen any grinder lose anodizing so quickly. It affects nearly every tooth but if it is deemed normal I don't have any real gripe I spose & will suck it up.

@Stevenski My old heavy grinder doesn't chip or scratch & doesn't have a coating. I like that plus it cleaned up nicely with an iso wash. Most of the new ones seem to be aluminium with coatings.
I'm starting to think that maybe I'll just keep using my old one & buy a Lotus instead. Yes. I'm liking this idea, sounds like way more fun.

@Stevenski I have no idea if that is normal wear and tear, but even if it is, I too would worry about what is happening to the missing coating?

Are you vaping that shit? And if so, is it vape temperature volatile?

Plus are you ingesting it via ABV edibles?

I think a good coating penetrates the aluminum deeper than your grinder shows. I have an SCS about the same age, used constantly, and the anodizing is perfect.

I have selected a new grinder to purchase but am disappointed in how the SC has held up under 40g or so going through it in a month. Maybe I got a bad grinder, maybe it is considered perfectly fine the way it is wearing? I don't know but it is not what I expected & have not seen on other SC Ti grinders. I have worked in manufacturing & know exactly how sometimes there is a bad batch or something small in the manufacturing process causes the product to perform differently to expectations. After all there was a reason I chose Space Case over other brands.

I am not really concerned as it would need to make it through either screen, whip, bong or screen, glass screen, 2mm mouthpiece & then get from my mouth to my lungs. It would be highly unlikely & the amount would be so minuscule I doubt it would leach off anything dangerous at under 230c. Just more disappointed that it has not worn as well as other cheaper grinders have.

I have around 150g of ABV sitting in a cupboard. I really need to do something with that but it will likely go in the compost as I am a lazy fucker.

I used to be like that, then I quit smoking and found FC and now I worry about anything and everything I put in my lungs!

As long as you feel confident it isn't contaminating anything, in anyway, I'm sure you'll be fine and I'm just being paranoid.

It's another world for you guys post 420! 150g of weed with a few active ingredients baked off, thrown in the compost ?!?!?!?!?

Just curious why you chose that. I have the GR8Tr and love it. (Really dislike the Compton and never use it.)

I tend to vape high temps & have fairly steady access so I never really use ABV. It just kind of sits there in the cupboard doing fuck all. I have started developing another big jar of it too. I will say it is better to have to deal with an abundance of ABV rather than bong resin & ash. My laundry pipe likes vaping more than I do after its hard life.

TBH I went with a 2 piece SC as I wanted a fine grind & from all reports it offers a finer grind than the other usual suspects. I could not justify at least twice the price for a 3/4 piece grinder when I am happy to have kief together with my bud. Thanks for the heads up on the Compton grinder though. What do you dislike about the Compton? Do you have the 2 plate version of the GR8TR? Looks like it might be a "lifetime" vape though in it's full fat guise.

With the GR8TR you can change the grinder disk from a standard to a finer one. It collects kief and also has 2 sections for storing 2 different herbs. Even with all those components it is much lighter than the compton.

It looks to me like the wear happens when the lid is put on the grinder and the teeth of the two parts make contact. It happens with every grinder, and with current designs I can't see how it could be avoided.

Take a look at them with a magnifying glass. I think you'll find that it does. I also think it's more visible with grinders with a coloured coating as it exposes the aluminum underneath creating a contrast.

I have a large SCS grinder, about 10 months old and i have the same thing happening to mine.
It mostly happens on the very tip of the sharp edges and only a few of them.
The teeth on my SCS are different to yours though...
Mine are more square and not triangular.

As for the Kannastor VAPE GR8TR, i love mine!!
So much easier to grind bud in. With the SCS i had to use a lot of force to get it started and it aggravated my arthritis in my hands and arms. This is the large SCS 2 piece.

My only complaint about the GR8TR is the amount of threading to unscrew the lower chamber to access your ground herb. It is almost 3 full 360 turns and i think they could have made the threads slightly coarser for less turns.
Apart from that it is the BEST grinder i have every used!
I have had it for about 2 months now and only cleaned it once because i wanted to.
So far it has gone a month with no cleaning and it is still smooth as silk!
I only have the VAPE insert so it grinds nice and fine but still fluffy.
The top storage compartment is a nice addition if you grind too much.

I have the single version and find it to be the perfect size for me.

If you've only been grinding bud in that thing I would not expect to see that level of wear and tear imho
It almost looks like it's painted and the aluminium used is soft
I've been using an anodised Compton grinder since September.
I just checked it after seeing your pictures and there's no wear and tear to the coating, the teeth or the centre post.

The SCS 3 piece is one I have eyed off as it looks pretty damm nice indeed. The top of the teeth wearing I could live with but what has caused the scratching/chipping/whateverthefuck you want to call it on the sides of some teeth? I have only ever ground up good quality buds without stems so the sides of the teeth could only have been affected through contact with green plant matter.

I will wait to see what the seller says on my warranty claim. Pretty sure the seller will see the value in working with me on this issue. If he does not want to do anything about it I am happy to deal with SC directly but all my dealings with this seller have been extremely positive over the last couple of years & I am sure this will be too. I hope it is a KO if I am honest as I would hate for this to be my lasting impression of SC QC.

Money wise I am not concerned with buying a new grinder or getting a replacement SC this is a matter of principal.

Being in Australia the exchange rate & freight can make things more expensive but I understand going direct avoids KO's. However I am a big believer in supporting small business & if it is even money or even a little it more I still shop local (Australia) rather the buy offshore for convenience alone.

Yup this is exactly what is concerning me & I have only been grinding buds up in the SC. Does anyone know what packaging SC items come in?

Warranty issue resolved via store credit & original Black Friday discount applied to my replacement grinder purchase. Looks like another case of don't ask, don't get

Its so crazy, I've been using my kannastor for at least 3 years and I see people are starting to see its a great grinder, mine even came with a cloth bag to put it in which I still have lolz..... They still do that?

They still supply the grinder with a nice black cloth pouch. Mine never sees the pouch though...
It is a great grinder and seems to complement all my vapes!

I also have a Santa Cruz-which I bought after the Kannastor. The Santa Cruz is great but I find I want to reach for my kannastor more often.
