Brand new to vaporizers. Can I go from combustion to vaping without a tolerance break?

Hello:

I'm 42 and it's come to the point that my lung function isn't as good as I need it to be so I've decided to move to vaping. I use marijuana for pain and anxiety and go through 1/4 oz a week of hydro; I've been smoking for 22 years.

I've heard that there is an adjustment period when you go from lifelong smoking to vaping. I did have a Magic Flight Launch Box a few years ago but gave it away because it had no effect on me whatsoever. I'm looking at the Volcano Classic because it will give me the temperature control I need to vape at higher temperatures, as I want those cbcs and I'm hopeful that vaping will work on me.

Is there some way to make the transition period easier without taking a tolerance break? Will it be too difficult to get the high I need if I don't? I can't go without marijuana or I have major trouble functioning (I've tried before and it was incredibly painful.) Also, any tips on getting those CBCs from a Volcano Classic without making noob mistakes? All advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Stop combusting after you find the vaporizer that works for your needs. Just strictly vaporize and after 2 - 3 weeks you will be over the hump. Some like to vaporize high temperatures during the transition.

I stopped combusting 3 years ago Dec. 31st. It was the best thing I ever did regarding my health. I had smoked cannabis for 25+ years. I also use cannabis for pain and anxiety. Eventually smoking will be revolting to you.

I don't have the Volcano. I know others have. PM @stickstones he is a very good resource regarding vaporizers.

I don't own a Volcano but I own a Herbalizer that also has good temp control and blows bags. I think it will work well for you. I personally found no trouble in switching to vaporizing. Admittedly I don't have a high tolerance but I found the transition enjoyable. If you don't need a huge amount of mess at once, a log style vape is another good option and can achieve the high temps you are looking for. What are you looking for outside of high temps? Portable or desktop? Direct draw, bags, or a whip? Would kid you like to use water tools (bong/bubbler)? Ask away, we're here to help!

I believe the Volcano is pretty user friendly so I won't be too worried about making a mistake. There is a dedicated thread for it with plenty of tricks and tips.

Oh wow you're so lovely, thank you! I will defintely contact stickstones with any questions. This is all very new to me but looks promising.

I'm hoping that even if I have trouble in the beginning, just getting cannabanoids in my body will keep my pain levels down while I figure it out. I'm sure with an adjustment period and learning how to vape, I'll be able to produce the same effect as I get combusting. I'm also very happy that vaping uses less weed.

Thanks so much again!

From what I can tell when I smoke with other people, I have a pretty high tolerance. I've been looking at the Silver Surfer and the Volcano Classic, and I defintely liked the bags more than the tubing so that's why I'm thinking about the Volcano. I've also heard great things about the Volcano.

I'm just looking for something that comes highly-recommended with the ability to control the temperature (has a gauge, I can read the numbers) so I can get the temperature up for the CBCs. Other than that I'm pretty flexible. I probably will need a second portable vape for when I'm out and about all day but I figured I'd worry about that once I get more settled with vaping.

You are very helpful and wonderful. Thanks for getting back to me so fast!

Welcome to the right place

I recommend looking into direct draw vapes as well. Bags have their advantages, but they also take more time and work, they can be noisy, vapor is lost to condensation on the inside surface...

My favorites right now are the Firewood, Vapman, and E-Nano or Underdog. They don't have precise temperature control, but you can get them as hot as you like or need to. Some might consider them smaller hitters, but that also means you can reload and get more fresh flavor. And once you've gotten used to vaporizing, you will probably find yourself using much less bud to more effect!

yes you can. I never stopped smoking, since I didn't start vaping because of my health, so with friends I usually smoke joints and if I'm at home I usually vape. didn't have any trouble transitioning, but before I got my first vaporizer I smoked once/twice a week, not daily.

however recently I gave/lended my da vinci to a friend, since I didn't use it and he was trying to cut back on tobacco. last week he told me he uses it about once a week, still mostly smokes joints, because he gets much higher from vaping than smoking, and he doesn't want to get that high everytime.

quitting smoking all together might make the switch a little easier, especially if you want to quit smoking completely, but I think it's not necessary to quit smoking to enjoy vaping. you do have to realize it's different though, the high feels different, and the act itself feels different(different feeling in your throat, no smoke-smell in your nose, etc), so don't expect to feel the same after vaping as you feel after a joint.

You do not need to take a tolerance break when transitioning to vaporization. However, there is a difference in the high and many who transition miss the 'couch lock' feeling they get from smoking and don't think they are getting high.

@CarolKing is correct that if you vaporize only for a couple weeks that you will be able to make the transition smoothly. It might not even take that long. It took a good week for me and I smoked, heavily, daily.

My advice would be to use high temps and perhaps an indica based mj to start; if you have access. The high will be 'heavier' than the lower temps and the indica will give you more of the couch lock feeling than a sativa would.

As to which vaporizer, while the Volcano used to be considered the 'gold standard' in vaporizing, this is no longer the case. It's a solid unit, but the cost scares some away. And there are tons of more vapes on the market than there used to be. You might do well with a Silver Surfer or DaBuddha for your first vape; although you mentioned the tubing being something that didn't appeal to you. The EVO would be the other answer. No tubing and a glass air path.

Do talk to @stickstones . He has 'been around the block' several times and will have some vape suggestions for you that will help you transition.

Welcome to the forum and good luck in your quest for healthier herb consumption.

The high is different. It's not as heavy. That doesn't mean it is not as strong mentally. Just maybe physically. I vape under 190c so that would explain some of that for you in terms of the ingredients released.

I also started with a MFLB and at first it felt a bit of a struggle to get high yes. Doesn't bother me now though.

When I first switched I would find that I would do bag after bag on my Volc trying to reach the same TYPE of high as combusting. After I reached a certain point I would realise that this feeling was not going to be fulfilled in the way I was used to and that I was experiencing a new type of high from my weed. I was totally off my face! You could describe it as lighter, but I don't think that is fair. I think it leaves your mind and body less groggy. But you are no less high.

During my change over to vaping, I went over to a friend's that I was also trying to convert. We did the same thing ^^^as far as vaping to an extreme trying to get 'high.' We then left to go out for lunch; stopping on the way at a car wash.

Well. Not only were we high, we were too high to be out. We broke into a fit of giggles as the guy was detailing the car (with us in it). At that point we realized we had no business being out in public. We were out of control, lol. Could not stop laughing and both of us had tears streaming down our faces.

So you may not think or feel you are as 'high' as when you combusted, but I'll just bet there comes a time where you are in a situation (after vaping) that makes you rethink that.

Herb gardener...
I recommend and arizer eq. Multi function, lcd display, well built, easy to mod, cheap.

I went from combusting 2 grams a day every day for 16 years,
The first night with my eq blew me away. The highest I have ever been. And I only used a fraction of the herb I would have used combusting.

Vapour has much more thc and other active compounds than smoke. It's stronger.

So you will certainly not need a tolerance break.

I wouldn't bother smoking again now.
The times I did were a massive let down. Vaping ups your tolerance, Imo. Joints don't work to well for me now. So I don't bother trying, it's not nice anyway.

If you was to go from vaping to combustion I imagine you would need a tolerance break.

My recommendation is a butane vape as lily, for me, has felt the closest to the combustion feeling then any other vape I have. Pretty much feels just like hitting a bowl. Doesn't have a read out of temp, but pretty easy to get high temp vaping from. As for getting high with no break, should be fine. I was and I was using a flowermate:doh: still getting fairly smacked. Then got the mighty which did a better job at getting me high, then lily who gave me almost everything I want (just doesn't have one handed use). All my vapes after are just vas and wanting to try new lol. Anyway just remeber hold your hits ( personally big thing for me if I want to get a more stoned high) and taking quick back to back hit helps me a lot in acheving that stoned. Hope you enjoy you vaping experinces and welcome to the community

Very commendable @hyrusekki and welcome to the forum ayy! From my experiences I'd say it is most definitely possible to "ix-nay" the tolerance break when transitioning from smoking to vaping and I also agree with the other members that once you find the adequate delivery system for your needs, you'll look back at your long history of combustion and realize that you are not only achieving higher levels of wellness with vaporization and becoming much more medicated than when you used to smoke but that your herbs also taste soooo much better than when you used to destructively char them via open flame.

The EVO by VapeXhale is my daily driver that has revitalized my palate (I never realized all of the precious terpenes and cannabinoids that I was missing through destructive flame utilization) and entirely smashed any and all prior notions that combustion was more effective, efficient, tasty, or medicinally satisfying. One of the best things is that I can use it with my existing glass/rig collection and dabbing without a torch or hot surface to freebase on by using pure-on-demand-convection is sheer brilliance!! Stay irie ayy :)

Never had the issue of an adjustment period. Quit for 2 years. Started smoking a bowl out of a pipe for a few weeks. Then I used an airizer air. About a week after bought my Vapir Rise 2.0

I think I was probably 50/50 smoking and vaping at first for a couple months. It's much closer to 95% vaping now and I have always thought vaping was better for medicating. I smoke for other reasons, if I want the most out of my green, best effect, best taste and best overall feeling, vaping will always win to smoking as far as I'm cornered.
If you have the coin for a volcano and usually smoke bongs, check out the Evo.

I quit combustion the day my Solo arrived. I just never felt the need. I do think it's vape dependent- I had a couple of false starts with other vapes.
