The 2016 Presidential Candidates Thread

It seems to me like trump is just saying all of the things that the rest are afraid to, at least out loud.

He is. He's not bought owned and paid for. I'd imagine this would make one more comfortable telling it how it is without fear of losing bribes....errr ehhhem lobby money from the crooked cronies and multi-nationals. You know those who truly care about the 99%

Finland wants to give all citizens, rich or
poor, a monthly payment

A basic income would encourage more people to work, as opposed to disincentivizing them under the current system by taking away their benefits when they start to earn an income.

As it struggles with unabated unemployment and zero economic growth, Finland wants to try replacing its bureaucratic welfare system with a much more simple one: a monthly payment of €800, or $870, to every citizen, with no strings attached.

The Finnish government says it wants to launch a “universal basic income experiment” in 2017 to test the feasibility of this program, which would replace the country’s current benefits system.

We'll first have to pry those funds from the cold dead greedy grasp of our corrupted politicians and their tax loop-holed sponsors. On second thought, forget it... ain't gonna happen.

So it seems that I am at odds with my generation. It seems that everyone that is around my age is conservative whereas younger people are more liberal. But yet, my generation was the hippie generation and if anything, we were the liberal ones but yet, it seems that most of them, as they aged, become more conservative.

I find this really odd being that I have always been a liberal and I still am even in my older age so I did a bit of research and came across this interesting article which kind of explains it:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mr-personality/201410/why-are-older-people-more-conservative

And after reading that article, I feel kinda good about myself. From a psychological point of view, I seem to be doing just fine, thank you very much.

Isn't it amazing that you can experience enough out of life to develop more than one persona in a single lifetime.
I've been repeating this quote below for over 20 years now. became a little more aware of the passages that I would go through life. But, I might have actually become more liberal as I got older. I am guilty of bagging on the younger folks. Like I was bagged when I was a teenager. But I figure they will get there chance to be conservative in 20 more years.;)
The world seems to move faster and accelerating all the time, we might have actually achieved singularity. (There may be more scientists alive right now than ever died in human history.Plus they can share information like never before.)

So, to stand still is the same as going backwards. It is to the point where I have to reboot my memory banks and read up on a topic before I even dare open my mouth.
And I'm comfortable with that type of uncertainty.

Now back to the thread. This election is still a year away. So I won't get Trump-phobia just yet. I'm more scared of the tv ads that are about to be released within a month from now. Then the fur and mud will fly.

Yea, Even Reagan wasn't Reagan. :D Barry Goldwater "Mr. Conservative" despised the religious right movement. Was for gays in the military and gay rights well before it became a 'liberal' social movement. Here's a few quotes.
"What I was talking about[Gay rights, Abortion]was more or less 'conservative,' " Goldwater recalls, saying he was smeared by the people around President Johnson – "the most dishonest man we ever had in the presidency." Goldwater continues: "The oldest philosophy in the world is conservatism, and I go clear back to the first Greeks. ... When you say 'radical right' today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye."

"Having spent 37 years of my life in the military as a reservist, and never having met a gay in all of that time, and never having even talked about it in all those years, I just thought, why the hell shouldn't they serve? They're American citizens. As long as they're not doing things that are harmful to anyone else... So I came out for it."

“You don’t have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight.”

Allow me to conflate this even more. Classical Liberal = Libertarian Conservative :whoa:
Some think of politics as being a left or right of center. But there is wide distinction between personal/social freedom and economic freedom.
I refer to the Nolan chart for clarity where candidates stand on freedom issues despite the way they wish to categorized. You can take the survey and see where you stand on the chart below. Have at it.

With all the deals, black budgets, spin and outright deceit by both parties I came to see them both as untrustworthy. I have gone from being a liberal to a political agnostic, conservative on some points and liberal on others.

Yes but it always comes down to "What are you going to do on Election Day? There is hurt and then there is butt hurt.

I vote my conscience every election. I don't ever compromise and vote for the lesser of two evils. Like all the spin doctors tell you too. "If you don't vote for
Status candidate #1 then Status candidate # 2 will win the election and you don't want that? Right? Your candidate doesn't stand a chance anyway and you are throwing your vote away." This is the problem inherent within our system.

I express my political leanings through local action and leave all the pixel positioning on the tv screen.
Did you ever notice how so many people/pundits get into the who celebrity/personality thing when describing their favorite candidates. It can't be helped, human nature being what it is and all that. But, I have only seen one of these candidates in the flesh. (Hillary Clinton) The others are just pixels on my monitor. I try not to be one of those people who speak like I know what is going on in their head and focus on their record. Another one is "He's just saying statement A to appeal too the Group A, His actually one of us." :mental:

These candidates didn't come from electrons on my television either. A lot of them started locally and later built momentum. Local politics do have an impact up to the federal level. But too many are obsessed with the political footrace that occurs every 4 years. And it is an Executive position where they vote on bills coming from congress.
Local action has an impact. So does petitions and informing the public. Carpooling voters. Writing your congressman/congresswoman. I have a certain respect for poll workers who are there to prevent any shenanigans.

I am independent and find local action and local voting to be more important for getting something accomplished or changed. I still vote in all fed elections but feel that's usually a lesser of 2 evils vote.

I do hate that many/most? on this site brand democrats = for cannabis and republicans = anti-cannabis.
That it stereotyping and I vote by where do candidates stand on issues most important to me.
Here in MN, our Democrat Governor is very anti-cannabis but many Republicans are very pro-cannabis.

He was willing to consider medical cannabis IF the Law Enforcement Assoc would support it. WTF !!!!
To Law Enforcement, current illegal mj status is their Golden Goose for making huge numbers of arrests, of low level personal users AND keep that HUGE pool of confiscated money coming in.

I vote for enlightened candidates from either party

It is frustrating when people still rely entirely on the left/right categorization. Without actually examining where the candidates actually stand on the issues.
People who get their information watching instead of reading the news are even more guilty of this. It all goes back to all the points that I have been making earlier in this thread.
I vote for enlightened candidates from either party
Good luck with that. :haw: Often though, you have to make the effort to enlighten them first. ;) Look how many have changed their position on an issue, once they got enough backbone and prodding from their constituents. Hillary has changed her position 3x on MJ already as one example. In my state of NY, We had to prod Gov Cuomo to start walking the walk, by petition, after his half-hearted effort to help MJ medical patients.

(CNN)Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump called Monday for barring all Muslims from entering the United States.

"Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on," a campaign press release said.

Trump, who has previously called for surveillance against mosques and said he was open to establishing a database for all Muslims living in the U.S., made his latest controversial call in a news release. His message comes in the wake of a deadly mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, by suspected ISIS sympathizers and the day after President Barack Obama asked the country not to "turn against one another" out of fear.

The problem with hating that: as myths go it is one of the truest and most reliable ones.

Aside from that I don't see how people can consider voting for Republican candidates who refuse to repudiate Trump, who is a total bigot and fascist. After some of the things he has said recently this is no longer a close call. As it stands the Republican candidates are now all pledged to support him if he gets the nomination.

Jeez no reason to be so rude.

@howie105 gotta get the racist fearful ignorant base excited.

As an adult, I say to the overly sensitive, grow up. Facts are facts and bare bones sting. No more leading padded soft lined lies of what truly life and reality are. And more importantly what this country was founded on. This -let's not be truthful or say anthing because one might be mad, offended or feel threatened when no threat is present- crap is shit and shit should be flushed not on parade as healthy and the norm. At this point in time in the United States of America the country is in distress! I fly my flag upside down. And I love our true values and what the country could be once again. I love America. Spin, spin my words to match one's narrative. No worries here. I know what I meant to say, convey or stand for. Finally I want to point out that I was hoping he was joking and I also gave real advice about history. A starting point. To truly learn and gain knowledge the person seeking must do the work himself. Are you aware we've been a corporation for many decades now and no longer what you may think of as the U.S.A.? May God help this county and us all. We all need it. Do you think the politicians are nice folks?

I didnt read your whole rant (well read a few sentences but I can feel bad vibes from here and I have much more important things like studying for my exam on cancer). Being polite and being able to have a civilized discussion are usually attributes of maturity BTW (since we're lecturing on the topic ). I know this might blow your mind but you can still make your point and while also refraining from being rude. Maybe you should look up the definition of a strawman since you laid out a textbook example. Who is saying to not be truthful? :hmm:

I'm naive enough to believe that some politicians can be nice folks with enough support (and prodding).
Then there is the suspensions up at Fox News. That's when I can relate to this guy.:lmao:It's still real to me dammit!
First Movie actors, then it descends to Reality TV actors in politics. We do need to remind people that he is a sideshow. I've just been reading what CAIR's position on Trump is. Council on American–Islamic Relations Wiki

But I'll be the incorrigible optimist and hope he doesn't stoke too much tensions. But to be even more frank. I can't stomach another conversation next thanksgiving about
his antics.

"I want to say a few things about Donald Trump and specifically about his comments tonight that we should ban all Muslims from coming to the United States, even American Muslims returning home from overseas.

It's fun for the political media to treat Donald Trump like he's the lead character in a soap opera or the star player on a baseball team. But the truth is his language is dangerous, especially as it empowers his supporters to act out against Muslims, Latinos, and African-Americans.

Poll after poll shows that I am the candidate best suited to take on Donald Trump and every other Republican running for president.

Help me show the best of America -- not the worst that Trump exemplifies. Help us win.

The United States is a great nation when we stand together, but we are weak when we allow racism and xenophobia to divide us. So let's send a message that we stand together.
