Vapor Tamers (specifically Elev8 glycerin ash catch)

Hey so I posted about this in the Evo and cheap glass threads, 7th Floor sale through today for 40% off glass, so probably the right time to get a vapor tamer if at all...

This is the one Im thinking would be the most useful size/shape/design wise http://7thfloorvapes.com/index.php/seventhfloorvapes/glycerine-cooler-ash-catcher.html and actually most expensive at $66 with the sale.

So is it really worth it? I guess you only get 20min or so before it needs to go back in the freezer to re chill, but seems like just doing vapor vs just filtering it would be better? High temp Evo hits can be harsh even though water, and I expect it could come in handy for the Grasshopper (and Zion) as well, logs too...

Anyone have any opinions on the matter? Basically trying to find reasons to or not buy, probably not to so I can save, but if its going to be as nice as I imagine then it would be pretty great to have, but maybe my expectations are too high? To me $66 is just a lot for an experiment, need research!

I bought one of these for the Firewood
http://www.shopxhale.com/products/4718

The combustion bowl slides out and goes right into the trash...perfect fit! I received it on Friday and have only used it once but it was not even chilled. I know the pipe itself fits on the Firewood as it is a typical 14mm female joint.

I also have one of these which works more similar to what you are looking at from 7th floor. I find that it does add restriction and I believe that is highly due to the coil concept. http://www.shopxhale.com/products/8275

I really can't comment much on whether they tame or cool the vapor much but I do intend to find out when time allows.

Ah neat, thanks dude!

These are so much cheaper, but 14mm kinda annoying (fine for GH I suppose). Theyre much smaller than the 7th Floor ones too it seems, but nice to know a cheap topions exists to try...

Please let me know how they work as soon as you can, got til midnight pst I guess on this sale

The ones I bought are bigger than the images look. The bowl is about 1" or so DIA and about 3-4in. long. It would not fit inside the case of the ESV for instance. They are both 14mm female joints so great for some, but would require an adapter to use with the Zion or EVO. (I'm assuming the EVO is 18mm)

Here is a video of the ash catcher out side coil percolator that you should remember.

Notes for the video- starts at second hit. Temp setting 4. Flower/wax/flower sandwich. Music is Vida la Vida by Dirty Heads. Coughing in background is by yours truly!

I will try both again tonight and post up by 10ish. It will be a limited experience but I will let you know.

Nice! So that one has glycerin in the ring around the ash catch? Not very much at all it seems...

I remember from my original research on the 7th Floor tamers that the bigger ones were the only ones really worth it, like the one above and the Saturn.

Looking forward to more reports, still on the fence. Thanks again man

I don't know if two sessions has given me much more experience but I do not find the liquid filled pipe to cool my vapor much more than a dry glass piece. I had my liquid filled pipe resting in the garage all day so it rested at a room temp of 55 degrees and then I put it in the fridge for about 3 hours. It only took two sessions on the Firewood to get it back to room temp. 1st session was on temp 3 and second on temp 4. The vapor seemed cooler in temp however I got the same minimal irratation in my throat that I would expect from my Firewood. The vapor was almost as cool as second or third hit on the ESV when the ESV body is room temp. Still nowhere near a chilled ESV hit.
Here are some pics:

Thanks man, looks like it does go really well with the FW and could be great with the GH...

I think you need to out them in the freezer, not fridge though. At least that's what I've read about the 7th floor ones, and the biggest one seemed to only go 20min. I wonder if this cheap one can withstand a freezer though?

Dig the Elevape comparison, sometimes hits are so smooth there its unreal. If its been sitting in my car this time of year and later its so icy cool and wonderful. I guess the hope would be to get that experience with Evo and GH, but if its still gonna be a lot of vapor maybe it won't make much of a difference and just water (got an FC Mod main chamber to use with my hydratube) is fine enough...

I let myself miss the 40% off sale so that decided for me, I mean $66 still isn't cheap, way more than each of my china glass bubblers. Maybe I'll try the one you have once I actually have a Hopper

@Shit Snacks I have a couple of these pieces. If I had to do it over again I wouldn't get any other one outside of the Saturn. The Saturn has the most glycerin and that makes a difference. You are right....About 20 minutes and it's back in the freeze. You might get a bit longer out of the Saturn. For session people like me this is not exactly ideal. For your style a smaller one might work.

Never seen those from the pics above but they do look interesting with the 90 degree angle joint and build in mouthpiece but again they look smaller so you are probably going to get about 10-15 minutes of cool vapor until it starts to lose its effectiveness. However still great for extending the glass air path so that will help cool the vapor down a bit.

Hey thanks Scott!

Yeah I think I recall you mentioned it when I asked in the Evo thread a while back. Yeah the Saturn was my original plan bc I can get it for $55 from VaporNation, and ofcourse it is the best by far I remember reading.

However the one I linked above seems to be a more recent design, the ash catch. Seems a little more compact than the Saturn but still has a lot of glycerin and a spiral path, more versatile shape perhaps was my thinking, its retail is more at least. At $110 now that the sale is over the ash catch is definitely off the table for me though...

I do wonder now about how the spiral creates draw restriction or just requires a longer steady draw, I wonder if I may have a problem with that like I do using longer stems in convection units sometimes, takes a different draw style for me... This little one comes to $13 with shipping, not bad to just try perhaps (maybe it also chills faster cuz its so small, if it is freezer safe that is...)

I just threw the liquid filled pipe in the freezer. How long should it take to get to optimal temps do you think? I wonder if there is a too long concern. I guess that is how we find out if it is freezer safw or not. This glass seems of decent thickness except for the mouthpiece. I think you made the right decision for now to wait. I too am in search of a way to cool hot direct convection vapor. So far I find the big j hook I have seems to cool the hot vapor from the Firewood best without the use of water and without restricting draw.

I have the ash catcher too. Much less glycerin.

Regarding restriction, I don't think it's noticeable but maybe I should break it out of the minifridge in my bedroom (purchased so I could store my tamers LOL) and check it out again.

@nosmoking you can store them in the freeze as long as you want. You will need to leave them in there at least a few hours to cool down though.....

Thanks scott...I will try it out in a few hours then.

Typically around the third capsule in the Firewood I am feeling good and medicated but sometimes I want more but dont want to vape more because of the irratation on my throat. I will test the tamer out over the next few days to see if I find any difference at the end of 3 sessions.

Ah ok, didn't realize you meant you had that exact one too! Definitely glad you popped in here then, confirms I did make the right choice holding off. The form factor isn't worth less getting less glycerin for more money probably.

We'll see how nosmoking does with this little one in the freezer, but I guess I'm back to the Saturn at VaporNarion if any at all. (Haha love that, mini fridge just for famers! Not even a beverage or two? lol)

And thanks again @nosmoking! Sounds like a good plan. Glad we were in the same boat so I can learn from your experience, plus we have similar comparison points, even better.

Yeah the catcher does come with a nice J-hook so that's something but the Saturn is where it's at.

And ummm yeah...you might find some other adult beverages in there and maybe a silicone container with some funny stuff up on the freezer part but seriously I got it cheap so the main reason I bought it was so I didn't need to go up and downstairs to get my tamers! LOL

Oh didn't mention a j hook on their site, if that's true it would've sweetened the deal a lot for me actually... Oh well I guess lol

Well I got it directly from 7th floor and it came with a J Hook. Funny thing is I asked the sales guy if it would and he said no. Then it showed up with one!

Not sure if that would be true from VN but I suspect they drop ship these from 7th floor anyway so chances are you'd get one.

Ah the ash catch was indeed on 7th floor, no mention of a j hook at least.

The Saturn would be from VN, that didn't come with a j hook did it?

Looks like @stickstones is doing 7th Floor distribution now, and may be able to help with having missed the 40% off glass, and about if it comes with a j hook...

But I think $66 for the ashcatch might not be worth it maybe, I don't know we'll see what you and nosmoking have to add after some more recent testing I suppose :brow:

No the Saturn is a totally different design. It has a 18mm male connection on one end and a 18mm female connection the other end. Lots of different combos with these. 7th Floor shows in a whip patch with k clips on both sides but you can also drop on top of your evo and use the male connection as the mouthpiece or stack the evo glass mouthpiece on top for that true mouthpiece feeling.

Not too cold to put on a hot Evo? Was another concern I had, risking damage to the bamboo or joint, but that would be ideal use

Freezer was a no go for this piece...perhaps it is not glycerin inside:shrug:

I will email the seller tomorrow to see if they will replace it or not and what instructions they can provide if any. It was never listed as a tamer or anything so the seller really isnt obligated here IMO but its cheap enough and they were quick and nice about taking care of a defective piece that I got from them previously.

So heres the damage

Oh shit yeah, just some kinda koolaid. Sorry dude, we egged you on. You should let them know others might make the same mistake though, so they can at least add a warning to the description on the site...

It was $6 so no harm no foul you know. I will mention it to them, however their site is the worst when it comes to providing information so I doubt they will add any warning. They dont tell you joint sizes for their pieces or anything.

Yeah I don't prefer to work it that way but I have in the past. I gave that example more for illustration purposes. I have rocked the LSV with the male/male adapter plenty tho and it's gotta be close in the heat factor so it's probably ok. You can always put a female / male adapter in the middle if you're worried.

I didn't really notice a change in draw with the pipe on the Firewood. I only noticed a change in draw restriction when I used the ash catcher out side coil percolator which makes more sense. It could be the water level or just the device itself isn't designed well or maybe it only feels restricted when I have it attached to a bong due to the larger diameter of the vapor path on a bong vs. the bubbler attachment. I'm not really sure. I could never find a video of one before I bought one so I didn't know what to expect really. It works great but it's not something I will use a whole lot.

I am still interested in cooling vapor somehow as I love my Firewood, but think it would be better if I could cool the vapor some. Then there is the part of me that just doesn't want extra parts to fuss with either and says just deal with the heat.

I haven't read the whole thread so this may be irrelevant but I've been using one of the mini tubes that some of us bought a little while ago with my firewood. It seems to cool down the vapor even though I'm not adding water to the tube.
