Rosin Chips... Part Deux

Did you decarb the pucks? I always have to decarb mine, as i do not believe the press does enough decarbing.

Regardless, you could always evaporate it 100% for some concentrate, decarb that, and then make that into a tincture if you don't get effects from this one.

EDIT: Wanted to add my favorite coconut recipe to date, and its so damn simple: Chocolate!!! Take your decarbed abv/rosin/herb, use just enough coconut oil to cover it. Let bake in the oven (Preheat the oven!) for 3 hours @ 212F, maybe 4 hours even.

Mix at a 30/70 ratio of oil-to chocolate, then throw it in the freezer for a little while. More chocolate=harder end product, if you go with a 50/50 ratio it will melt at room temperature (And make a great hard-top for some ice cream!).

Ok so should I throw the next batch of chips in the oven before the jar then? What would be the best decarb method for rosin chips?

This batch does not seem to have the potency that I was looking for. I ended up evaporating it down to 25ml and have tried 1 to 1.5 ml as a tincture under the tongue with very little if any effect. The effectiveness of pressing as a decarb process seems to be partial at most from this very non scientific experiment, and I have another growing stash of single pressed pucks waiting to be sacrificed in the name of non science. I hope that after a few times through this process i can come up with something enjoyable and repeatable to do with the rosin chips

I was happy with the taffy-pops I made with my last rosin chips. I decarbed at 220f for 30 min, then double boiled in coconut oil for 2 hours. Strained and mixed with 2 parts corn syrup and 3 parts sugar, brought up to just under hardball temp then dropped to low and mixed mixed mixed. Made nice little sleepy pops (2-3 to really hit you). They were primo buds though and the chips still had visible rosin goo in them.

I'll be cooking with my chips again in a similar manner. I found them stronger than AVB. Look forward to hearing if you get a good tincture recipe sorted.

ok, update time. I have now evaporated the first batch completely down (minus what I tried throughout this process) and it is a really thick viscous oil. I guess I could cook this into some coconut oil, but then it seems that all dosage measurement is pretty much out the window. :bang::bang:

I also have a little over an ounce of single pressed chips to experiment with this next time around. I assume wrap in foil and put in the oven for 30 min @220 would be a better step 1 this time around? thanks again for any and all advice here, it is greatly appreciated.

Also, regarding potency, I find edibles made with AVB (which rosin is pretty much the same) are about a 1/3 potency compared to edibles made from primo buds. That's just the 'high' part, I find them maybe 2/3rds as potent on the sleepy side, sometimes more.

It's also possible that the 2 hour simmer in coconut oil that I do further decarbs the chips, so if you're just soaking in alcohol, maybe you want to decarb more before? Do a little search online for tincture recipes and see how people decarb.

So I threw the evaporated oil in the oven for 30 min @240 with aluminum foil over the top of the pyrex cup. I also threw in 15g of single pressed chips in a pyrex pie plate covered in aluminum foil. Took them out and let them cool for about 20 min, then ground up the chips and sprinkled them back in the pyrex. I then heated up a cup of coconut oil in a pan of hot water until it melted, then blended in the oil with this. I then poured this over the ground up decarbed rosin chips, recovered in foil, and threw the whole shebang in the oven @250 for 45 min. The plan is to take it out and stir, then replace in the oven for another 45 min. I will then put it in the freezer overnight and slowly warm to melting consistency in the morning. I will strain that and use the results for some caramel/taffy type concoction. Does this seem like a feasible plan?

Well, you certainly won't have any doubt about it being decarbed enough! :D

Let us know how it works out!

Caramel completed. Made a huge slab, probably wieighs 4lb. I just cut off a sample square. Will report back results

The caramel was delicious, but nowhere near strong enough. I am wondering how much I can use with a cup of coconut oil. I plan to decarb the chips in foil covered pyrex, then add the coconut oil and back into the oven just as i did before. Could I use 40g of chips for a cup? 60? I am sure there is a limit to the solubility of the coconut oil, would i be within the soluble range with those amounts?

Try to grind it up as fine and powder like as possible, then slowing pour and stir into the warm coconut oil until it had reached its limit of not being able to hold anymore and turning into a slush, or when you're finished pouring in your material. Also soy letchin is an emulsifier that will allow for more material to coconut oil ratio. But if you want even stronger results I would try making a tincture and then add the evaporated/ consent rated tincture to coconut oil.

^^^ Ya, I do similar ratio with coconut oil. Use just enough coconut oil to cover/saturate/soak the ground up pot. You don't need more. Squeeze it out really good when you're done to get every last drop. Then don't forget to low boil the remaining pot in some whole milk mixed with heavy cream. Makes for amazing cannabis bhang tea! I love getting 3-4 uses out of the same pot.

I tried this last night for the last time, unless it works for me. I used butter this time, as I prefer the taste and consistency of it over coconut oil by quite a bit. I used 80g of chips that were pressed once with a straightener, which i first ground up, then covered and threw in a 245 degree oven for 30 minutes. Once they were out and somewhat cooled, I mixed them with just over 2 sticks of melted butter in a double boiler, which turned out to be just enough blend in and make a nice slurry mix. After about 45 min of double boiling, I strained through cheesecloth and threw the results in the fridge overnight. This morning i had a hard chunk of STRONG smelling very green butter. I melted this back to liquid, then added about a cup of cold water. This is now setting up in the fridge again, and I may try to 'wash' it again tonight, depending on how it tastes/smells after removal of the water.

I just started playing around with rosin, and right now I am really enjoying vaping the chips. My straighter runs on the hot side, so I do very short presses, and get a lower yield than I could. Closer to 10% than 20%. If I get a better setup and start getting better yields, I imagine I might not like vaping the chips as much. But right now I'm getting great clouds and pretty good flavor from the chips.
