Herb Grinders

Do you guys not find the SCS grind too coarse in a 3 or 4 piece?
.............................................................
I find the SCS 3 piece small shreds just right. You can shred upside down for finer grind.
However, I don't like/want too fine of a grind as I don't want the material falling thru vape screens.....

Considering I'm pretty much always bored out of my head, I decided to do some grinder math this morning (using the calculator in my phone, not a spreadsheet). Supposing I did everything right, the grinding area of SCS grinders is:

Mini: 1,133.54 sq mm
Small: 1,962.5 sq mm
Large: 3,419.46 sq mm

If I did the math correctly, this means the grinding area of the mini is about 57.76% of the small, which is about 57.39% of the large. Or if you want to look at it the opposite way, the grinding area of the large is about 1.7424% of the small, which is about 1.73% of the mini. In other words, the small's grinding area is almost twice as big as the mini, and the large's grinding area is almost twice as big as the small.

Since each grinder's grinding chamber is about the same depth, I don't think volume really plays a role here. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As I generally grind 0.5 g in my small, this math suggests that I should use 0.87 g to get equivalent results with my large (0.5 x 1.7424), and 0.29 g (0.5 x 0.5776) to get equivalent results with my mini.

I will try grinding these quantities soon. It will probably be at least several days, though.

@Aimless Ryan
I didn't re-do the math, I assume pi x diameter = area.
But, you may want to move some decimal points----large is about 174% of small, not 1.74% :)

Area = pi • r squared.

Even though I think SCS grinders are officially 42 mm, 53 mm, and 70 mm, I used the approximate inner measurement of the female part (outer ring) for my math (because the solid metal ring does not constitute grinding area). For r I used 19 mm (mini), 25 mm (small), and 33 mm (large).

Actually, I just realized I should have used 20, 24.5, and 33. Close enough, I guess.

I'm pretty sure 1.7424 is the right way to express it. 174% is 174 times the original number. That's a really big fucking grinder; probably twice as big as a locomotive.

If the large is 1.7427% of the small, that is 0.017427 times the small or minuscule.

174 % IS 1.74 times the area. 100% = 1.0 1.74% = .0174

Or if you want to look at it the opposite way, the grinding area of the large is about 1.7424% of the small, which is about 1.73% of the mini.

I keep going back-and-forth in my head with the semantics. At least the math works out for me when I do it my way.

Upon further inspection, though, I guess the circumference of the inside of the LID (or male part) is what should be used to determine the radius of the grinding area, rather than the inside of the female part. So that would make the grinding areas about 38 mm, 45 mm, and 62 mm in diameter. Which makes the radii 19 mm, 22.5 mm, and 31 mm.

If I'm way off, someone please correct me. My brain isn't always very reliable these days.

Think I got it right this time. (Mods: Please do not merge this post with my previous post.)

I measured the diameter of the grinding chamber of each of my SCShredders, then measured again. Got the same measurement both times with each grinder. I don't have a metric measuring device, so I translated inches into millimeters.

MINI - Even though this grinder is 42 mm in diameter, the grinding chamber of the mini SCS has a diameter of about 33 mm, which makes the radius 16.5 mm. This makes the grinding chamber's area about 855 square millimeters.

SMALL - Even though this grinder is 53 mm in diameter, the grinding chamber of the small SCS has a diameter of about 46 mm, which makes the radius 23 mm. This makes the grinding chamber's area about 1,661 square millimeters.

LARGE - Even though this grinder is 70 mm in diameter, the grinding chamber of the large SCS has a diameter of about 60 mm, which makes the radius 30 mm. This makes the grinding chamber's area about 2,826 square millimeters.

So based on grinding chamber area, the small is roughly twice as big as the mini and the large is roughly twice as big as the small.

Based on the fact that I often grind 0.5 g in my small (which is probably about half the capacity), here is the quantity I might consider using to get similar results with each of the sizes:

Mini: 0.26 g
Small: 0.5 g
Large: 0.97 g

(Unless I did something wrong.)

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed (I hope it has), but I just received my SanataCruzShredder "RX for medical use only" edition large 4 piece grinder.
It didn't take long for a pile of small aluminum shavings to accumulate after giving the second from top piece a quick brush.
This company boasts their product as a medical grade tool that has been ultrasonically cleaned which (foolishly) gave me the assumption it could be used out of the box.
I think these are great products but be sure to thoroughly brush and rinse.

Good post @whatitdew I'm thinking about the med 3 pc SCS or the TieDye Compton grinder edition. They don't seem to respond quick to email or allow checkout outside the USA though so Santa Cruz probably gets my cash in stead of the Compton Grinder. Anyone have a opinion on the tie dye Compton

I'm having a tough time deciding on a new grinder. I have a 3 piece scs, that I accidentally dropped the bottom piece on the floor, and it kind of bent to the point it's hard to screw back on unless I catch the grooves correctly. Also, the top pieces ring around the piece is not staying on so maybe time for something new.

I am looking at a 4 piece, small or mini or whatever they are called. Up in the air about 3 of them.

1-scs rasta
2-Cali crusher homegrown mini
3-space case titanium small

I'm really asking if you had a choice of these 3, what would you choose? Maybe tomorrow will be a good Black Friday sale day and I can then swing one of these.

Disclaimer: I don't necessarily have a clue what I'm talking about here. These are just my impressions, and my explanations may be horribly wrong. But they may be right. I don't know.

After yesterday's little experiment, I think I have a better idea of how each of my 4-piece SCShredders performs, and possibly why. Also, the dense herbs I have right now seem to be good for comparing grinders, and I'm beginning to feel like all these observations may change if I was using different herbs.

Here's how I rank them, and why:

1. Small 4-piece
  • Fluffy, consistently sized grounds.
  • Comfortable to use.
  • Very deep hopper. (I love this feature.)
  • Medium-fine grind, even without grinding upside down.
  • Teeth are evenly spaced, which makes it a little harder to fit nugs but also seems to be at least partly responsible for the consistent size of the grounds.
  • Fairly consistently sized smaller holes also seem to help with consistent size of ground herbs.
  • I would like a slightly finer screen.
  • This grinder is almost the perfect size for me, regarding both comfort and capacity. (I'm not sure what the capacity is; probably well over a gram.)
2. Large 4-piece
  • Good leverage.
  • Turns very smoothly when there's no gunk.
  • Just a little too big to feel comfortable in my hands while using.
  • Bigger grounds make it through the holes sometimes. Grounds are of very inconsistent size, at least when grinding only half a gram. (I intend to put a gram and a half through it soon, to see if that changes anything.)
  • I would like a slightly finer screen.
  • Probably best for grinding 2-3 g.
3. Mini 4-piece
  • Holes are much bigger than the other two sizes. This seems to allow chunks to get through (or get stuck in the large holes).
  • Consequently, it's probably best to grind upside down a little bit.
  • Would make a phenomenal portable grinder.
  • The screen is probably a little too fine.
  • Kind of difficult to engage the threads sometimes (because of the small diameter, not the thread quality).
  • Maximum capacity is probably about half a gram.
Having slept on it, then looked at the ground herbs again, I have to say I prefer the results of the small big-time. It's not even close.

I feel like the small provides a finer and more consistent grind due to both the size of the holes and the tooth arrangement. It has smaller, more consistently sized holes than both the large and the mini, and there are also no empty spaces for herbs to be pushed around instead of being ground.

A picture to compare teeth and holes.

Here's a picture of the herbs I have right now.

Thanks for that explanation! I've always wondered if there were any performance differences between the sizes. Of course we also have to consider when these things were bought since the design and size of the holes have changed as well as the pollen screen becoming more coarse allowing more kief to fall through. I have the exact same Small 4 piece as you do with the exact same hole design. If you take a look at their website see how they are now more oval? If anything I think the Minis went through the most drastic change out of all 3 of them.

Regardless still love my Small 4 piece SCS despite the fact I've been told I got one of the new coarser screens. Don't think I'd ever have need for a large, a small is perfect for me as well!

This is what they have now..

And this is the one we have..

Not a huge difference like the Minis.. but still.

I think you will find that is a photo of a large SCS, not a small.

The photos on their site do not seem to necessarily match the size that the webpage is for. The front-on photos, as you posted above, seem to be all large models, but the other photos show the correct small models.

If you had gotten an SCS with a fine screen, you would want the coarser screen. Yes, it is too coarse, but it's better than the fine screens. The fine screens are so tight, they might as well be called sheet metal.

Also, as Simon said, SCS marketing pictures can be misleading. The one in the picture you shared is a large.

I stopped using my 4 piece SCS because the fine screen was mostly non-functional unless it was cleaned daily. I'm glad to find out this is a known problem.

Not exactly I got and old one and is the perfect grinder for me. Getting rid of the newer ones I have with coarse screen... Can't stand it. LOVE the fine screen. Six months use and hardly any kief but what is there is actual kief and no BS. I'm done with SCS 4 pieces unless they change the screen back.
