Do you cough still when vaping vs when you combusted?

Honestly I wish I could harness coughing, it seems to inexplicably get me super baked.

Super baked? Or oxygen deprevation more likely. I get what you mean with the reclaim though. I collect mine in iso then boil off alchohol and I get left with a really nice oil that never sets. That shit is tickly. But not too harsh.

@nondarb, do you have a wood vape? being a carpenter.

No wood vape, I sure have been eyeing a nano however I've also got eyes for the Zion and FW however. I work primarily commercial, I frame and do trim work among other things. Alas no woodshop unfortunately.

I don't subscribe to the oxygen depravation explanation in this case. It wasn't a lungbusting hackfest, I just got more than I anticipated! :sherlock:

I have always been sceptical about the coughing/oxygen deprevation theory.
I understand the science but, if coughing deprives me of oxygen for 20 secs. Why do I feel so hight for the next half hour, my blood oxygen levels have returned to normal by this time, I have measured. So maybe coughing does get you more high.

I am a site carpenter too, but domestic.

It was a quick deep cough, I think maybe the vapor was warmer than I thought and it tickled me just so. I'm lucky I got away from the bubbler :uhh:

Cool to have another construction worker here! Theres a difference between us cretins in the field and the shop guys for sure. I love being a carpenter, would love to learn and have access to a shop though. I just don't think I could settle down enough to go the same place every day, not yet anyways. Actually gotta go to work now! Have a good one guys.

Oh man, what happens when you cough down a bubbler.?
I don't do water.

I too could not go to the same place of work every day, I like meeting different customers and working in different houses all the time. I am self employed so that helps, not too keen on having a boss.

I always speculated that coughing helps expand the alveoli and increase surface area of absorption, but that seems very minimal given the relatively significant effect felt....I dunno.

I started smoking MMJ about 5 years ago using a glass pipe for my insommnia. Only used it at night, it worked like magic! I couldn't believe I had found something non big Pharma that would help me sleep. Then the harsh coughing kicked in at about year 3 (still only smoking just a little at night) and I started looking for solutions. Bongs, lozenges, throat sprays, on and on.

It got to where I could NOT smoke, I would cough before it even got into my lungs and I was coughing out the MMJ, and the coughing fits were awful to the point that other MMJ smokers tried to help. Nothing worked.

Was ready to give it up and go back to prescriptions and came across an ad for The Herbalizer. I bought one about 6 months ago and have only done vaping since. Perhaps some of you can help me with the following questions, as I still consider myself a newbie with vaporizers as I have only tried The Herbalizer.

1) I have coughed like crazy for the last six months, top shelf indices, and after having no luck at lower temperatures on the Herbie, I pretty much have it on 445F every time. (I talked with the Herbalizer people and they told me to just keep it on 445F for sleeping, get all the cannabinoids out of the herb and into me.) So I do that. Cough is awful, I get this obnoxious, bubbly phlegm coating my airways and I spend half the night coughing it up. Lungs hurt, hurts to breath. Very miserable experience so far.

2) I also do not get sleepy, at all, when using the Herbie. I can vape all night, I just cough and gag and my lungs hurt and I am still awake.

3) I have hooked the Herbalizer up to a bong with ice, bong with hot water, tried lower temps (Zero results), any tips anyone? This is my second unit, first one was broken straight out of the box. I do have a high tolerance, which is strange as I only used it at night. Edibles, flower, tinctures, I have a high tolerance to them. Would really appreciate any ideas on this, I love the ease of The Herbalizer, but not what this is doing to my lungs. Thanks everyone!

Check out the Arizer Solo thread in the portable section, it's a great vape and near all of the comments on the thread will back me up. You can hook it up through a water filter attachment too, i dont do that but I've seen others pics and they obviously do. I hardly ever cough off using my solo. Very easy to use, works well on low temps too and is easy to clean and pack. Simple, effective yet solid and built to last.

I have found vaping doesn't make me nearly as sleepy as with smoking.

Some things you could try to ease the harsh effect though; that temp is hot! You could try doing it in stages, starting lower and working up to that temp. This would thin out the hit, instead of getting a big fat cloud in one you can get a few varying sized clouds that are easy to manage.
I also find some herb is just nastier than others, and it's usually dank indica that has the richest, dankest vapour IME. You could try a fruity indica, I've enjoyed these the most.

It's possible a different style of vape could induce sleep better too. I'm not familiar with the Herbalizer, but I think the faster the extraction potential, the better it is for sleeping.

Try lower temps and some warm water in the bubbler, indicagirl. Maybe 410 max. Also someone mentioned stepping it up. That could help too. I usually do that myself. That way it seems like I get more terpenes as well rather than losing them due to high heat. I think I have read some indica strains have terpenes helpful for sleep. Too high a temp and it is harsh and not much flavor. I also vape for sleep at times and never really go over 400. It's funny though, I will vape and think I will never go to sleep and next thing my alarm clock is going off! Let your mind drift off.

This is not my experience, I've struggled sleeping all my life, i was at the point of staying awake for 2 days then sleeping one night....

I used to have to smoke a huge joint right before bed, and try to slip away while the head poisening was occurring, head rush....

Since vaping and kicking nicotine, I drift off effortlessly, every night with no trouble, normally before I even plan to sleep, it's bliss...

I'd advice a vaping with controllable temperature like a volcano, mighty, crafty, cfx, flowermate 5 pro and take doses at 320-370F.

If vaping or combusting flowers causes so much trouble, why not make edibles from it? The cannabinoids that make you feel sleepy are indeed most effectively released at higher temperatures, so if you do it solely for the purpose of sleeping vaping at lower temps will not yield the desired effects. At lower temps you'll be releasing more psycho active cannabinoids and those, although fun for most, can give you opposite effects of what you are trying to achieve.

So before you give op flowers and go back to pharmaceuticals try making edibles.

I believe I understand your frustration, @indicagirl

I agree with previous replies, but before you dump your investment in your Herbie I'd like to offer my experience. Hopefully, the Herbalizer experts can help adapt my technique to your technology if you think it might work for you.

My 1st vape session of the day, I almost always have a coughing spell. It may take a few minutes to work through, but once I 'clear my pipes', I'm good to go.

History: started smoking cigs in my teens then added cannabis in my 20s. Smoked for 30+ years. Basically, I had thrashed my lungs. Ultimately, I fucked combustion about 3 yrs ago and am still tobacco-free. I've dealt with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and respiratory allergies for many years.

About a year ago I bought a Pax2 and started vaping bud. I've figured out how to use daily without too much irritation of my damaged respiratory system. I refined my technique thru trial & error while lurking here at FC for the past year, reading the collected tips, tricks & wisdom of members of the forum.

The key for me is: too potent or too large of vapor draw will irritate and cause cough. So I take small, slow sips of half-bowls of herb, temp-stepping through the session.

I'm more a fan of sativas and I want the full range of psycho-actives. And I usually keep a few grams of an indica strain around for those evenings I just wanna kick back or need help winding down at bedtime.

But there's no way my wimpy-ass, ultra-sensitive lungs can handle the intensity of all the cannabinoids at hi temps until I've extracted off what's available at the lower temps. Pax2 has 4 temp settings: 360F, 380F, 400F, 420F, so I figure I'm drawing off roughly a quarter of the total actives on each setting.

My experience is that some of the actives released in the lower temp ranges have anti-inflammatory & bronchodilating effects that open & relax my throat/windpipe, so I can get to the rest of the good stuff in my weed. IMO, when I start with small/weak enough hits to get those guys working for me, then I bypass what I would call an attack of acute broncho-constriction. I am not a doctor! But that's the closest I can find in the medical descriptions to the cough-choke-gasp experience I know so well.

Like I said near the top of this dissertation, uh post, even starting with small, lo-temp draws, my 1st draw or 2 of the day does irritate & cause coughs. But relatively shallow, maybe up to 5 quick expulsions, not the deep, extended cough-up-a-lung for 5 minutes I used to get with combustion. When the deep cough reflex is triggered, it seems to stimulate production of mucus/phlegm from nasal/sinus passages down my throat and trachea. My breathing can feel/sound wet, juicy and sometimes airway so obstructed/constricted I can't get enough breath in or out. Oh man, do I know the ache of coughing, coughing, coughing trying to clear that crud. Then the panic starts to rise, which I think sometimes gives me a shot of adrenaline --- just what I wanted when trying to sleep, NOT!

@indicagirl -- I think I know exactly what you described.

Most days now, I can simply cough a few times with my teeny-tiny 1st hit on temp1, wait a minute or 3-5 til I'm relaxed, not coughing and I've cleared my throat. Then I take another tiny draw -- 2nd hit might be 1 cough only... and then another small hit... within a few, the drying/cotton-mouth & relaxing effects have kicked in and I'm feeling fine. Pretty soon I'm taking larger/longer draws until vapor is done for that temp so I kick it up a notch. Continue stepping up the temp until max is reached, actives all extracted, ABV is dark brown & the load is done.

Reducing the quantity of herb I pack into each load makes the draws weaker, so it doesn't take long to finish a load and get those hi-temp goodies, too. I repeat as needed for the effect desired.

Sometimes I forget to turn the temp back down on my Pax2 for a re-load. Just a tiny hit of fresh at temp4 SLAMS my lungs and I'll cough, choke and gasp. Running my vapor through a water tool/bong didn't help me significantly, either.

My most effective treatment for the whole cough-choke-gasp syndrome is prevention. That said, there are still times I'll lose it.

Then I have 2 strategies: using a prescription inhaler of albuterol (rescue or fast-acting bronchodilator for asthma) or doing a respiratory treatment with a flutter valve unit. The flutter valve is a plastic thing with a mouthpiece I blow/exhale into, providing modulated resistance to the airflow. I first saw one when my Mom was hospitalized with pneumonia--the modulated, fluttering resistance loosens & breaks-up thick mucus in the bronchial passages so it can be "huffed-up" & expelled.

Both of these require medical prescription, at least where I live. Again, I am not a doctor! I generally choose the flutter valve at home, because I prefer to avoid using a med (which I think has stimulant effects) when a simple session of blowing into what looks like a jumbo plastic pickle, and feels kinda like blowing a broken whistle, will accomplish the same result.

"Huffing" is a breathing technique best done leaning forward and is much less violent than coughing. It's a series of short forceful exhalations. Huff-huff-huff-huff to move that gunk up to the throat and finally give a moderate cough (or 2) to get it out. Rotate huffing sequences with a couple sips of water, then blow my nose is helpful for calming me down. To be blunt, all those fluids being let loose need replacing else the gunk gets thicker; and blowing it out my nostrils means it's not dripping down the back of my throat. Focusing on proactive tasks stems the panic that arises when I can't breathe.

I wish I could say the same, that does sound bliss.
If I smoke enough I can fall asleep more easily, however I find the head high of vaping keeps my mind awake/active and I don't find the transition so easy.
I still think it helps though, especially kief. But I've found if I vape late I stay up late more often than not.

My wife works at nights and when we smoked joints she always did it before going to sleep and it helped her a lot. Now that we are vaping, she does not do it when she comes back from work. As with you @MoltenTiger she gets a head high and seems to tap into a new form of energy and just keeps going and going and this is after a 13 hour shift and she comes back 10 in the morning. You'd figure she is sleepy enough, but the thc is lifting her up again ad sleep will have to wait a bit.

@indicagirl,
I second this advice. I own a Herbalizer and find that no matter how moisturized and cool the vapor might be thru a bubbler, too much vapor and my lungs react with coughing.
A small load and small or moderate inhalations are the way to go. In fact, with small inhales thru warm water, my throat and lungs actually feel better/refreshed. It can feel so good that I've questioned---am I even getting any vapor because it doesn't feel like it. I've installed a vaping station lamp where I exhale this vapor over it and the light shows that yes, there is plenty of vapor ( can see it better with dark background). If you are seeing vapor with no light shining on it, you are probably getting too big a hit.

And like vapeOR suggested, temp stepping can moderate ant negative effects. A small load and a couple small draws at 350, then 370, 390, 410, 440 can be much better than starting at 440 with many draws.

I hope you can experiment and find a technique that works for you. IMO, a bubbler with warm or hot water will always be part of a technique that is most gentle on the throat / lungs. The whip or bags will always be more harsh on the lungs.

Let us know more about attempts, with details, as folks here want to help make this work for you!!!

This is true for me too, the first hour of vaping for me, specially sativas, is very buzzy and stimulating, but after I've vaped a couple of baskets, and it's about 9:30pm, I get very sleepy, I don't feel like I pass out or anything, just have the ability to close my eyes and instant sleep when Im ready...

I think if you start vaping too late it doesn't help, need time to come up, and back down again....

Some good advice from other members about reducing the harshness, I don't think I can add much to that.

As far as getting more of a relaxing, sleep-inducing effect from your herb, try vaping some at a real low temperature during the day and save the ABV. Then, when night comes around and you want to fall asleep, vape that ABV at a high temperature. Most of the energizing psychoactives will have been boiled off from the earlier session and you should be left with more of the sedating effects from the "heavier" cannabinoids (that is, the cannabinoids that boil off at higher temperatures). Experiment with that a bit and see if it helps.

If that still doesn't work, maybe look into concentrates? I don't have much experience with concentrates, but some people here on FC swear by them, claiming they get much better effects than they ever did with herb.

Good luck!

I sometimes cough a little but not much or in a way I find concerning. I did have a strain a few months ago that seemed very tickly and made me cough loads but been fine since then.
When I smoked I think on average I coughed about the same. Oddly I seem to remember coughing more when I first switched to vaping, I found the vapor quite harsh but I think that was down to a very short vapor path on the Atmos Vicod.

I recently took a month off from vaping due to illness. (Flu, asthma, pnumonia)

When I restarted I used micro loads (.05 grams) in an underdog log vape. In the stem I added another screen with a very thin layer of organic cotton to act as a filter. I also used low temps.

Thank to combo of low temps, micro loads, and filtering got me.back in the game. It's been 5-6 weeks now and I'm maintaining the micro loads, low temps and filtering and my lungs seem much better than before I got sick.

I'm no doctor, just saying this works for me, and due I think, to a lowered tolerance I seem to be just as medicated and my jars are lasting much longer.

Hope this helps.someone

The heat and tons of other junk from smoking just trashed my throat, making me cough instantly. Vape cough usually sets in after the session, for me. There is very little throat hit with the vapor, but just the dryness of the air causes some irritation. Of course this is offset by taking smaller hits, lower temp, and vaping through warm water. I definitely cough way less with vapor, though.

Warm water in my hydratube drastically reduced my coughing, probably by an even better ratio than cold water to dry; but THC is an expectorant, so those prone to coughing will likely always cough.

Edit:

Since vaping cannabis, my asthmatic tendencies have drastically reduced, my lungs are much clearer, and its easier for me to catch my breath when exercising. My lungs have cleaned some stuff out I didn't even know was there from decades of allergies and asthma. When I do cough from vaping, generally its my lungs getting more mucus out it would never have been able to previously.
