Herb Grinders

Is there a difference between the grind of a 2 piece small SCS and a 3 piece small SCS?? Also are the sellers on Amazon legit? I'm thinking of buying one on there....with my cashback bonus I could get a 2 piece for $21 or a 3 piece for $40.

I have two small 4-pieces and a small 2-piece. Even though I ordered the 2-piece two or three months ago, I still haven't used it. I'll try to remember to use it tomorrow. It might be hard for me to assess, though, because the dense herbs I have right now come out ground pretty fine even when I grind right side up.

As far as I know, everything on Amazon is legit. But sometimes you might have to look real close at the listed dimensions of the grinder.

If I'm thinking right, those prices seem good. But I wouldn't be surprised if you could find better prices at EZVAPES.

@bounce5 I ended up having to grind last night, so I used the small 2-piece SCS for the first time. I only did about eight partial turns (or half turns, I guess), which was enough for a nice fluffy, relatively fine grind.

It's hard for me to share any real opinion of the grind quality; it seems comparable to the small 4-piece I used a day earlier. So for now I'll just say I would prefer a 3-piece or a 4-piece. But I want to add that a lot of that is probably because I'm disabled, which includes having lost a lot of feeling and coordination in my hands. However, the small 2-piece is much easier for me to use than the mini 2-piece, mostly because it's taller. It's still pretty hard for me to use, though. One thing I really don't like about the 2-piece is that there's no knurling on the bottom piece.

If I end up having any more to say about this grinder, I'll try to remember to share it. But right now I prefer more than two pieces almost universally.

EDIT: I've never used one (or seen one in person), but I would probably prefer a large 2-piece to a small 2-piece. One thing I really like about my large 4-piece SCS is the teeth placement. Unlike the small, the teeth on the large are arranged so there are spaces to put sizable nugs and still have an easy time closing the lid. For my uncoordinated hands, that's very helpful.

I decided to use my large SCS today for the first time in a while. I guess the main reason why I don't use it much is because it's... big. (Usually the most I grind at one time is half a gram.)

Anyway, it occurred to me right away that today's ground herbs seemed noticeably more coarse than herbs ground in my small SCS. After noticing this each of the first few times I dipped into the herbs, I decided to grind half a gram in a small SCS, for comparison. Yup, quite a big difference, which I think is evident in the picture below. (There's about 0.5 g in the little grinder; 0.4 g in the big one.)

I think the grounds in the small grinder have a more consistent size, too. I'm really surprised by the difference in grind size/quality between these two grinders.

Whenever I manage to consume all the stuff in the picture, I guess I'll have to try grinding at least one full gram in the large, to see if that changes anything.

Note: I ground all these herbs with the grinder right side up exclusively.

Next time, please show the grinder teeth for them, to compare the size of teeth, pattern of teeth, size and pattern of holes, etc.
thanks

I'm wondering if or guessing that -- the large size SCs has bigger drop thru holes so the herb falls thru quicker/ doesn't get shredded for as long

How's this?

I'm thinking the size of the holes probably does make a difference. Because my small gets a finer grind than both the large and mini, which both have bigger holes than the small.
That and the fact that the teeth are closer in the mini. Also loading half a gram in the small one will "take up more space" compared to the bigger one. You might find that filling up the small one with X amount of herb takes up, say, 1/4 of the grinder surface, but that same X amount will take up 1/8-1/12 the space (volume?) in the bigger one. My only SCS is a 2 piece so I can't really test it out heh. Plus the same amount looks like it's more in the small grinder ;)

The small SCS has a grind I like more, and it really does not look (grind wise) notably different then what I get from my small SC ti. Now I do flip it upside down, but I don't mind. Maybe that's the big step that's skipped with the SCS, and people like it better for that reason. Actually the blade shapes and placements don't look all that different. The holes the material falls through are a different shape (not round). Very interesting thanks for the pics.

Disclaimer: I don't necessarily have a clue what I'm talking about here. These are just my impressions, and my explanations may be horribly wrong. But they may be right. I don't know.

After yesterday's little experiment, I think I have a better idea of how each of my 4-piece SCShredders performs, and possibly why. Also, the dense herbs I have right now seem to be good for comparing grinders, and I'm beginning to feel like all these observations may change if I was using different herbs.

Here's how I rank them, and why:

1. Small 4-piece
  • Fluffy, consistently sized grounds.
  • Comfortable to use.
  • Very deep hopper. (I love this feature.)
  • Medium-fine grind, even without grinding upside down.
  • Teeth are evenly spaced, which makes it a little harder to fit nugs but also seems to be at least partly responsible for the consistent size of the grounds.
  • Fairly consistently sized smaller holes also seem to help with consistent size of ground herbs.
  • I would like a slightly finer screen.
  • This grinder is almost the perfect size for me, regarding both comfort and capacity. (I'm not sure what the capacity is; probably well over a gram.)
2. Large 4-piece
  • Good leverage.
  • Turns very smoothly when there's no gunk.
  • Just a little too big to feel comfortable in my hands while using.
  • Bigger grounds make it through the holes sometimes. Grounds are of very inconsistent size, at least when grinding only half a gram. (I intend to put a gram and a half through it soon, to see if that changes anything.)
  • I would like a slightly finer screen.
  • Probably best for grinding 2-3 g.
3. Mini 4-piece
  • Holes are much bigger than the other two sizes. This seems to allow chunks to get through (or get stuck in the large holes).
  • Consequently, it's probably best to grind upside down a little bit.
  • Would make a phenomenal portable grinder.
  • The screen is probably a little too fine.
  • Kind of difficult to engage the threads sometimes (because of the small diameter, not the thread quality).
  • Maximum capacity is probably about half a gram.
Having slept on it, then looked at the ground herbs again, I have to say I prefer the results of the small big-time. It's not even close.

I feel like the small provides a finer and more consistent grind due to both the size of the holes and the tooth arrangement. It has smaller, more consistently sized holes than both the large and the mini, and there are also no empty spaces for herbs to be pushed around instead of being ground.

For me I get the exact same grind consistency from both large and small. But I always fill the grinder fairly full. My herb is alway top grade and very fresh, mostly heavy indicas. I was very impressed by the grind of the large size

SCS now has some more 4" Jumbo size 4 pieces in stock for anybody who wants a huge coffee table piece

I suppose that's why I'm curious to see how the large does with at least 1.5 g. Do you know how much herb you generally use with each size?

Hmm probably a gram in the small and I guess 1.5 to 2 in the large. I never weigh out anything. I usually fill the grinder around the middle completely leaving a nice gap around the outer edge so the lid can fit easily. I remember being genuinely surprised at the nice grind consistency of the large when I first used it.

Tonight I put this nug (1.76 g)...

...through the large SCS (right).

Looks much better than when I ground 0.5 g in it.

XdnQ5kY.jpg

The small grinder contains the same herbs in both pictures (0.5 g). Also, there is only about 0.4 g in the large grinder above, because I had already used some of it when I took this picture.

Aside from the BB in the front, I'd say this grinder performs fine when it contains enough herbs. So I'm beginning to think each grinder has kind of a sweet spot regarding the quantity of herbs.

I bet everyone else already figured that out.

Great thread, just wanted to add a review of my grinder that I've been using for the past 3 years- the common Chromium Chrusher.

I'll be honest, for $20 it does what it should, and well. I get a nice fluffy grind, the screen is the perfect size, and overall the only problem I've had since I've bought it was the magnet on the bottom part of the grinder accidentally popping out while i was cleaning it. As far as drops go, the farthest drop its taken was 4-5'. No spillage with the magnet. Without the magnet, I herby designate it a "Desktop Grinder".

Overall, If i buy another grinder I'll buy a higher quality grinder. But for my first grinder to be used with vapes, its up to par in my book.

I also agree that a grinder should be cleaned before use, and to clean it after, if there are no o-rings etc, soaked in iso.

Hey your cat looks like mine! It's funny your small SCS looks and seems to perform a lot like my small SC. Both from the photos and your description, they really seem to be more alike than the debates make them out to be. Other than I do invert it to get that smooth of grind, I still don't feel I have something massively inferior.

To change the topic a bit, I never understood why some people don't like to grind. That goes for vaping or combustion. I feel so much of the bud gets missed internally and the flavors aren't released fully. I know some feel the bud shouldn't be grinded because of it's various chemical compounds, but I get so much less medicated on a whole bud.

I have a request. Can y'all share how much herb you typically grind, and what grinder you use (including diameter/size)? Do you grind upside down? Do you grind right side up? Any other potentially important details? Pictures?

@mikeben Funny you say that, because other things you've said recently have made me want to try my small Space Case (2-piece) again for the first time in a while. It'll be several days before have a chance, though, considering I already have like 2.5 g of ground herbs.

Even though I'm a grinder freak (and I will surely continue being a grinder freak), I'm beginning to feel like it really doesn't matter what grinder you use, unless perhaps you have the shittiest grinder ever made or you want something specialized, like those Kannastors that have been discussed lately. Yes, I would like a nice consistent grind, but do I need it? Probably not.

Funny that you mention combustion, because I've combusted about a bowl each night for 9 or 10 days, after having not combusted at all for about three months. I was surprised I did it that first night, but it got me fucked up, which I needed, and which pretty much doesn't happen when I vape. (It's OK. I'm not converting back. Just exploring alternative options.)

Thanks to @KidFated.'s response, I'm gonna have to try vaping a nug today.

I have a large Sharpstone. I grind between .5g and 1g at a time. I like a bit of a finer grind in the EVO ELB so I do grind sideways. I have gone back and forth on this and found that I get a slightly more uniform AVB when using a finer grind so I've continued with that.

I have also seen that some people feel that unground herb provides a better experience. I have tried it and completely disagree, at least where the EVO is concerned. I haven't tried other vapes with nugs.

I have a large Sharpstone.

Is that 2.5"?

-----

Added Later:

Having slept on it, it's clear that the herbs in the large (right) are not ground quite as nice as the herbs in the small (left). There's not really anything wrong with the herbs in the large; they're just not as nice as the herbs in the small.

TxEZjLn.jpg

If I referred to this as a medium-fine grind recently, I think I want to change my description to medium grind.

Also, I vaped a small nug within the last hour. I couldn't tell any difference versus vaping ground herbs.

Like I said I think I get the same experience and results in my small 4 pc SC TI that you do in your corresponding SCS. The grind looks identical except I do turn it upside down.

I have to say that every grinder I tried until I went into the SC price range eventually broke teeth or hurt my wrist trying to get it to work. I had a Cali Crusher but the others were just anonymous. The SC is miles ahead of them as I imagine the MM and SCS are too.

Do you guys not find the SCS grind too coarse in a 3 or 4 piece? I tried out the Kannastor Vape Gr8r courtesy of @lazylathe and it's by far the finest and best grind i've ever experienced. I think it's the best vaporizer grinder on the market.
If I want finer I use my 3pc SCS upside down, or my mflb finishing grinder. The gr8r does look nice though!
