I agree Hemp Wick is fun to play with but not very practical. It adds more confusion to the hit at a time when many of us want less. Candle flame lighters (like Bic) are OK, provided you avoid the 'flint dust' which contains toxic 'heavy metals'. Vaping is about health, IMO that dust is a big old step backwards.

Thanks for all the great info OF! Maybe I wasn't clear, but I do avoid the flint dust by simply lighting a candle first. It burns my whole session and I just depress the gas button and place the bic mini lighter near the candle to grab a flame to use in the VG.

It's an original pipe model so I can see the flame well and adjust as needed. Due to its very NON conspicuous method of use I couldn't have it as my go to however. Too susceptible to wind and difficult to do with any stealth as well. :D

Some herb in a jar, a good torch type lighter and a VG makes for 'guaranteed vaping in a box' you can fall back on any time. You might even include that candle, just in case the power is off at the time?

Couldn't agree more. The torch lighter is the best, and my 'guaranteed vaping in a box' Doomsday back up is a loaded vg coil, coil of hempwick and tiny stash jar inside a Barocca cannister.
I don't find the coil gets anywhere near as hot as the aluminium bat, or is as hard to use. I can use the coil and classic native with torch and candle lighter plus hempwick with great results but still struggle to get a single decent hit off the bat no matter what I use.

+1 on the Vapman recommendation, too.

Edit-cannot work out how to get @OF quote into proper quote box, sorry.

Yep, I got that part, but what did you light the candle with? I switched to matches and a new Bic until I got the first 'electric spark' lighter. But then, after trying the torch, I realized the lighter type was wrong anyway.

Try a torch and see what you think? Just stay away from the monsters the stogie guys use, too much fire.

Oh, yeah I did light the candle using a regular flint lighter, but I made sure to spark it well away and let it burn for 5-10 seconds before bringing it over to ignite the candle wick.

If my S&Bs continue to require as much downtime as they have so far, I will invest in a proper flame when I buy my own VG. :)

I was poking a bit of fun, but if you want to avoid the dust the best plan is to avoid it at the source? A fine point for sure.

I suggest for five bucks you can order a pair of them today so you'll have them 'next time'? They make dandy lighters for other things as well, one lives on the kitchen table to light candles and another on the patio table to light the oil lams there (instead of the box of matches I used to use).

Your call, of course, but IMO it's a great five buck buy.....and one you need to make before you need it.

Classic VG owners,

I found a bowl you can pickup from Home Depot that will connect your flame filter AND connect to a 14 mm glass downstem.

Go to the plumbing section and pick up a:

TUBE TO FIP
COUPLE W/INSERT
3/8"X3/8"

It'll look like this:

719852938217

That nut on the right will screw off and you'll have something like this:

6_am_06120.jpg

The inside will have a little lip to put a wire coil for the bowl, just like the bowl on your VG.

I attached a 14mm downstem to the top of my hookah and am getting great results.

Oh and it's like 3 bucks.

Is there any safety risk in this setup with the brass bowl pictured above? Is brass inert? And can I trust any brass bowl piece from any hardware store? Or do I need to get a certain brand to make sure it's pure brass?

So I saw this post in combination with @paytonpenn's video of this setup in use a while ago. I'm thinking of buying the brass Tube to FIP part to attach to a Vaporgenie topper and then use through a 14mm glass downstem on a water pipe. Just wondering if it's totally safe.

Is the stainless steel coil the better option?

The coil is looking like a much better option for a waterpipe, imo. I didn't see the picture, but if its a brass bowl you got at a smoke/vape shop I'd be suspicious unless you know the salesman really well. Is it brass? Probably. Is it pure, high grade brass? Probably not. Try hitting it a little with a lighter/torch at your normal VG temp and see if it smells funny, mayhaps. Otherwise I'd stick to the ss ones.

So I'm also here to decided on my next vapor genie! After much deliberation, and recalling how some crackheads inhale straight butane, Im over the butane-in-the-air-path issue. Especially after hearing about how often the Lotus needs to have parts replaced/etc.

So, I'm looking at either: The SS Coil vapor genie, the Bronze Sherlock, or just the aluminum pipe version.

Now, this sketches me out a lot- I want to be able to make qwiso/reclaim from my new vapor genie, and picking a model that allows for the cleanest qwiso is important to me.

-Is it safe to collect reclaim/qwiso from the Bronze Sherlock or Aluminum Pipe VG? I know the coil is probably safe, since its made from SS (If they made a sherlock out of SS, I'd just throw them my wallet and call it a day). But this is Bronze and Aluminum.. Opinions? I'd be worried that my solvent (iso) could leech potentially harmful chemicals out of the bronze/aluminum, even though their site says you can use solvents.

-Is the glass bat just such a pain in the arse to load/reload that I should pretend it doesn't exist?

-Is the glass one REALLY worth it? I've heard it compared to some of the best vapes out there and quite a few people I've seen on the forum never want to go back to anything else.

All advice, as usual, is appreciated!!

I'm also interested in how everyone has hooked up the "original" wooden cap to a waterpipe- I used a SS downstem+bowl from a local vape/smoke shop on a "Crack-n-scratch" special water pipe that uses an O-ring. Overall cost of the rig: $15. Now I want a VG with a full GoG waterpipe..

Can't vouch for random headshop or hardware store brass but I specifically went to home depot for mine and I can't vouch for the item you choose but mine is safe and lead free.

Used for 4+ years I definitely prefer it over the Coils. Which I've had 3 of in both sizes. The only inconvenience is that it doesn't connect to 18mm but I would suggest getting a pipe model for that top and the tube to fip, even if you wanted only water pipe usage. Cleaning is easier, gets less dirty in comparison to the coil, and I find users get a hit out of it way easier than the coil.

I'd go with the Bronze Sherlock, personally. The SS Coil is good for water pipe usage, but not much else IMO. I found it frustratingly difficult to use dry (there's just something about aiming a torch toward your face from 6 inches away that's a little unnerving...) And while I love my Classic, I'm kicking myself now for not just going with the Sherlock from the get go. It has better visibility than the Classic, the bronze body cools the vapor more (or so I've heard, anyway), and unlike the wooden Classics it can be soaked in iso.

Edit: You were talking about the aluminum classic pipe, not the wooden ones... The aluminum classic should cool the vapor about as much as the Bronze Sherlock I would guess, and can be soaked in iso as well. But the Bronze Sherlock would still have better visibility.

I like the Bronze Sherlock a lot, but I'm wondering if either the bronze sherlock or aluminium bottom could potentially leech chemicals when i wash them and evaporate my iso.

I'd also love to know if I could purchase JUST the bottom of the Bronze Sherlock, as that would be ideal.

Input appreciated!

You can buy just the bottom of the bronze for $60, I asked them recently. Just email vaporgenie and ask them.

Hate to double post, but i have a wild idea i may even make a thread for: A vapor genie cap attached to a glass Jhook.

Today I was rummaging through my supplies and found an old school metal bowl with basic threading that fits the vaporgenies (Normally use this on my maybe-broken-waterpipe) cap threads.

I also found a rubber (assumably rubber??) O-ring. This O-ring fits perfectly above the lower part of the bowl, above the threads that you would normally scew into a metal downstem/metal pipe.

Now, I took out my 14mm to 18mm glass adaptor, and popped in the bowl. It fits snug like a glove.

Anyone have some comments on this idea? Technically, the o ring would be inside the air path.. but not in front of it?. Im wondering if the O-ring would melt or gas chemicals, if it doesn't I think i just found the easiest vapor genie top to GoG adaptor idea.

Opinions??

If the ring is black, it's almost certainly Buna or Viton, both inappropriate for the temperatures we deal with. You want high temperature Silicone, almost always red. They are sold my numbered sizes (3 digits), you can often buy small quantities from Amazon, other O-ring vendors or my favorite McMaster-Carr. You want like 450F rated materials

I don't advise taking common 'hardware store' rings past boiling water temperatures. Bad things can happen.

Oh, they're worse than hardware store, they're "smoke shop" grade. Thank you for pointing that out before i bought a j-hook.

I also have a yellow ring, any way to ID what that could be made of? I also am not sure how I'd size the o-ring.. thickness+diameter?

Beats me about yellow, I'm told it's the hydraulic guys that drive the red color code. Bad karma to have a blowout of hot, high pressure oil I guess? The colored ones I've seen haven't been Silicone (high temperature) except the red ones.

Yes, rings are rated in 'dash numbers' by cord (minor diameter) and ID or OD:
http://www.sealingdevices.com/o-rings-size-chart

How to measure:
http://www.parker.com/portal/site/P...RD&vgnextcatid=2961130&vgnextcat=O-RING+SIZES

You want to use the second column, the 'AS standard dash number'.

I'm about to order a hand carved walnut Vapor Genie for those times when a Launch-Box isn't enough. I was a tobacco pipe smoker for many years and I think that a VG will feel good in my hand.

I've got some questions ....
1. should I order anything else from VG besides the pipe and a set of screens?
2. is there a suitable or recommended torch that I can order from Amazon?
3. would it be better to wait and see if Triihouse gets re-established and I can get a Daisy?

Thank you @Madcap79 ... pipe and screens it is!
Placing my order now.

I'd get a few MPs as well, they're cheap and unique. If you're a 'stem chewer' you'll need them. Locking down with your molars, even absentmindedly can raise a divot or crack. I've proven this experimentally.

My recommendation for lighters is get a torch. 'Candle flame' types can soot the exchanger up over time and are IMO harder to aim down the hole. This is my favorite, they work great and are real cheap. Under $3 shipped. Sometimes they can take a while (like a month or more....) to get here, you might consider ordering one or two from both?

Enjoy your VG, good choice. However the big Bronze one gets more use from me......

I wont quit my quest to easily pop our vapor genie caps into GoG parts. The 'yellow' ring looks more like the glow in the dark color before you expose it to the dark, its the same color as most of the o-rings used in my "Drip tips" on my ecigs. I guess its more whiteish..

I'll look around for a high temp o-ring. Maybe check my local vape shops/trustable smoke shops.

Might have some luck with that.

I guess I got lost with what you're trying to do somehow. You want to use the VG head on your WT? Like the coil does?? IIRC it works with both 14 and 18mm but have only used 14 personally. Works fine IMO.

Anyway, I seriously doubt the LHS has anything for you, specialty part you know. You can usually get them at Hydraulic places. Look up 'hydraulic fittings'. Big cities all have them for service parts for construction equipment, HVAC, trucks and so on. They custom make new hoses and carry LOTS of fittings and seals. I used to buy mine one at a time that way before I started stocking the sizes I needed. Bringing up a point, what size do you need, I might have it?

Even if you don't know the size, bring the one you have in and tell them you need high temperature that size. They get that sort of stuff 'all day long'.

Anyway, what size you looking for?

Short on time, but more or less im trying to take a basic metal bowl that the vapor genie cap can scew into, add an o-ring above the threads on the bowl (there's a recessed part), and slap that bad boy into a j-hook while I wait for my Bronze Sherlock to arrive.

I'll look for one of those Hydraulic places, i think we may have a local one actually.

My purple vapor genie no longer taste of pure vapor anymore, unfortunately. 3-4 years and it just tatste like vape resin and wood which oddly enough isn't good, so i ordered a bronze sherlock to remedy this situation.

Well, im either getting the shrelock or the coil.. leaning toward the sherlock for iso cleaning my vape.

EDIT: Size of the ring: CS diameter is a little over 1/8", ill call it 3/16". Inner Diameter is 3/8"

2nd EDIT: If i select "Gold" for the bronze sherlock, does it still allow me to change patina if i put it in the oven?? Are there any funky coatings if i select "Gold"?

If you already ordered your Bronze VG from the vapor genie website you ought to have it soon. Their pretty quick with getting your order out to you, has never taken me more then 4 days to receive an order. I know that doesn't help in the least with your project but just thought I'd drop that little piece of info(my experience at least) on ya.

:peace: 'n' Enjoy the sweet Vapor.

Edit: The metal brushes they sell on their site will be a big help to make your Purple Classic taste better again(they scrape out the nasty ol' resin build up), the wood models do get 'seasoned' with use and age.
