hello, i'm planning to order some rosinworks plaes ( the 5"x2.5" ones) and i'm torn between 2 presses can you help me out?
one is smaller and has a manometer, it looks more solid and better quality wise , is really short so i would press while i'm sitting on the floor if i don't place it on something, it is also more pricey thant the other one and it reaches only 10 tons
http://www.bsmacchine.it/p_493/pressa_idraulica_manuale_da_banco_10_ton._p10-m_so.html

the other one looks a bit more cheap(and it is), no manometer, it's a bit bigger and it could be heavier also, it reaches 12 tons, and it has got the possibility to regulate the workstation height:

price is not really a prob..
thnks guys:)

They're probably both good choices, I think it really depends on the form factor and features you want. Given that it will be at least a few weeks before getting them (especially to Italy) I'd wait to see if the presses go on sale for Christmas so you can save a few bucks.

I'd go with the one that has the pressure gauge. It is really nice seeing what pressure you are squeezing at :D but that's just my preference!

I normally only squish enough for the night but I'll be pretty busy the next few days so I figured I'd make enough to hold me over until Saturday. All are single presses. I still need to press the 9 chips a second time.

Left two: Super Skunk
Middle four: Skunk #1
Right three: White Diesel Haze

Yum

I'm sorry I'm still not buying tons of pressure...if I compare what I press to @BoogerMan 's they look the same other than my pattern is square due to having square plates...yields look the same...my chips are about the same if not smaller. Now don't get me wrong, @BoogerMan 's setup is the bees knees but I think you can get the same or nearly the same much cheaper. I press at 200-215F...as I stated earlier, any lower I get more sappy, which is ok, I just like the snap-pull stuff. That's the sweet spot for me. On second presses I get a little bit, so my first presses are getting most of the oil out.
I must point out though, @BoogerMan has definitely grabbed the bull by the balls and is running with it...he has been an innovator and I am thankful for him doing all these experiments. A shout out to @Joel W. for the plates...if you guys are looking for plates, I don't think you will find a better deal or person to deal with. I gotta show my love for the rest of you guys that have experimented as well. We have all pushed this thing forward and it's awesome to see us discussing all these ideas :science:

Yeah you can definitely get good results with a cheaper setup and a lot less pressure than I am using. Hell look at the people still using a flat iron and a vise grip or small clamp. They get decent yields for dirt cheap!

I've almost always recommended a vise setup especially if you have a work bench already. I only recommend a setup like mine if you don't have a work bench and want to know what pressure you are pressing at.

I also like the hydraulic setup over the vise because it is sooo much easier to get to the same pressure level. I was cranking down pretty good on my vise using quite a bit of effort and i was maybe getting 2-3 tons if I were to guess. It takes almost no effort to get to 3 tons with the hydraulic pump. It only starts to get slightly difficult around 4-5 tons and then pretty hard around 7-8 tons. So this setup (or even better, an electric hydraulic pump or pneumatic pump with a push button) would be very ideal for someone who can't physically tighten a vise to the pressure needed. Yes it is more expensive but it may be the only option for some. This is just my comparison from using both types.

Thanks for the kind words man! All this has been a lot of fun and will continue to be fun! I appreciate all the knowledge everyone is sharing and bringing to the table too!

So at what pressure does the rosin start to flow good there @BoogerMan ?
I've been pressing between 3-4 tons. It definitely works well at 3 tons and if I'm doing a little larger nug I go up to 4 tons. I'm loving this setup. Took maybe 5 minutes to squish all that.

Here is some of the white diesel haze. Super glassy! Is a sativa maybe that's why? My two indicas are usually sappy and turn into a pull n snap after a day.

So if 2" round bar has 3.14sq inches and for the larger pucks you use 4 tons. Let's call it 3 square inches because the pucks should be smaller than the jaws.

8000 ÷ 3 = 2666 psi , give or take..

Thank you Sir!

Glad you are liking it!

Edit: Also, +2666psi pretty much mirrors Kurt's vise ft lb torque spec chart , when 30 ft lbs of torque on the handle gets it all.

Edit2: things I've noticed.

Older weed: darker rosin
Higher temps: darker rosin
More pressure: darker rosin
Longer presses: darker rosin

Darker rosin is sappy
Lighter rosin is more shatter

i use the harbor freight 6 ton shop press unmounted. it works pretty well! i've already had to replace the bottle jack once tho...

they don't sell a replacement six ton bottle jack. the 8 ton is unsafe in this frame. so i got the 4 ton. still making great rosin!

Just so Dab HAppy!
Any thoughts on whether this thing could be used without being mounted? Says it weighs only 50lbs.

http://www.harborfreight.com/12-ton-shop-press-33497.html
I have used one of those to push wheel bearings at my stepdad's and it's not mounted. Lots of pressure and 2 guys pushing on it to get leverage and whatnot. It should be no problem, the mounting is more for position locking rather than stability.

The nice thing about it is you can work standing up and if you raise the shelf to the highest level you should never really have to bend over either unless your pretty tall.

Ok, check it out. I'm on to the next phase. Previously, I did 2 little batches of rosin using a clothes iron on an upside down pan. That worked out surprisingly OK and I love it, so I'm slowly upgrading the process in a minimal/cheap fashion. I'm exploring rosin because I want to try to reduce my concentrate cost (and enjoy a superior product). I normally pay $25 for 1/2g of concentrate at the dispensary. My first rosin attempt, I used top shelf bud to make sure it worked. Now, I'm shopping around for bud deals to see how economical I can make it.

So, 3 things happened:
  1. I found a hair straightener at the thrift shop this week (5 bucks). It's a no name, but it's really built tough. No heat gauge, it went over 400 testing with heat gun.
  2. My favorite dispensary texted me that they had a fresh batch of Superman OG on sale for $40 1/4oz.
  3. I picked up the Irwin 600lb grip clamp on the way home from the dispensary.
Since the straightener is so tough, I'm just going to do this batch by putting the straightener right in the clamp. Later on, I'll take apart the straightener, add a dimmer on the power line, and glue the heaters to wood blocks that I'll glue to the clamp. This will be my mid-range unit that I'll use for a while before building a mini bottle jack press.

I'm waiting for the buds to hydrate a little more, but I pressed out a 0.5g bud to test the setup. I heated up to about 160f, put the package in the heater, turned the heat back on, then slowly clamped tight and left it for a full minute. I didn't hear, nor smell anything, but when I opened it up I got a nice flow. On my previous rosin attempts, I didn't bother with second press, but I could see this chip was really rosiny so I folded it a couple times and repressed. I did it the same way for a minute starting lower temp and letting it heat up. The second press was huge! Looked same as the first. Total yield was 0.079g which is 15.8% !!!

So, I'm very happy. When the buds hydrate a little more I'll do the rest of the 1/4oz and see what I get. The grip clamp is nice because it requires no physical effort (making the second press easy). I'm liking the long press at lower temp while heating up method a LOT! And it looks like these are some good buds, as I suspected, even though they were on sale. I knew they were fresh and I inspected them at the shop.

ive been over hydrating as of late... its all about that steam with rosin.

the type of rosin you get is dictated by both the state of cure of the flower and its genetics, but proper hydration is necessary to really get the flower to just ooze and milk essential goodness.

obviously the added hydration increases yield when first compaired right after pressing, but... I have noticed old 6month cured on dry conditions flower is exposed to a room temp coffee filter hydration for 3 days the flowers were like a couple days off the plant. I did rehydrate the filter once a day since it had literally become dry while the flowers continued to wick more and more moisture. I did not do it very scientific since I do not know the actual RH at pressing but the was alot more flow than usual and the resulting chips still seem to have more. so I am repeating the process with those same chips to see what kind of rosin I get from twice extremely rehydrated flowers produce.

saw alot more steam than usual but the irony was that this has been the most flavorful batch of rosin in a long time.

steam o matic!

You dabbing the rosin out of your dripper, or is it just there for looks?

i've been using 18650 powered mods and wickless coils for portable dabs. i've tried many of the vape pens out there, but they are ultimately all vape pens, and after discovering the joys of dabbing, it's hard to feel satisfied with any of those options. i came across the portable dabs thread on icmag and soon found what i was looking for.

i've using a mech mod with wickless coils in the 0.3--0.5 ohm range for several months. i just got the sigelei 150w box mod this week. i still need to build a new coil in the 0.1--0.3 ohm range for it. in the mean time i'm jsut using my old atty set up on wattage mode, but i've got the titanium wire just need to twist it up.

i just pulse the coil to warm it up, then melt my rosin right on the coil. it's like buttering a corn cob. i can fit a decent sized dab on there and it hits as hard as a quartz banger or enail.

i'm hoping with temp control i can get it to recreate a perfect low temp dab. i've been thinking about getting a two post rda and tryign to make a mini banger/enail type setup in there using a ceramic cup salvaged from a 510 atomizer.

i've tried making canna ejuice using ejmix and although it homogenized perfectly, i couldn't get past the flavor of the peg.

this was my first press. 1/2 ton arbor press.

i've made a couple of the quick clamp presses. i call it an HMK rosin press cause hashmasta kut posted a pic of his and i immediately copied it lol.

thirdeyevision had the sweet idea to melt the plates into the pads on the clamp for a really pro look.

No, keep posting! Great pics.

So I finished squashing the rest of the 7g of Superman OG. I got 1.2g so 17%. I'm very happy. The Irwin grip clamp works great. I plan to take the hair straightener apart and attach the heaters to the clamp like @heady blunts pics. I'll be putting a dimmer inline on the power cable since my straighteners have no heat dial.

I seemed to have good success by starting around 180f, clamping and heating up to around 220f over a minute. My second presses were done the same and it felt like they were pulling almost the same yield as the first press every time. The buds were quite fresh, high grade, super sticky, and I hydrated with an orange peel for a couple hours. I'm going to keep modding this setup and working with it for a while, but I imagine I will still build a mini-bottle press with some of @Joel W. 's plates soon enough for zero effort squashing.
