Discontinued The Grasshopper

Fairly sure its from heavy use. By the time I'm cleaning the threads, the screen in the cap is starting to become slightly restricted. I'm using a santa cruz shredder, and some of my meds are a little dry. A rougher grind and wetter material might help with this. I load over the screen of my grinder, I do no load it like a dugout.

Not really a big issue, I'm just trying to be sure I don't strip the threads by forcing it.

This happens to me too. I think it's from pieces of herb being pulled into the screen, and then moves to the side and gets stuck.

Every 3 days or so, I take a 3 Q-Tips, dip them in Iso, hold the mouthpiece upside down and swab the threading, and then the screen. I use the other dry ends to swab it dry. Then I blow through the mouthpiece and swab with a dry Q-Tip just to make sure I get the Iso in case it gets around the other end of the screen. Sometimes I will swab the outer threads, but definitely less often than the inside. However, it takes less than 5 minutes, and looks brand new every time I do it. There is only 1 small stain that I think is from heat of vapor residue that I just don't clean well enough. The threading feels so freaking nice though, cleaning it isn't a chore because the payoff is so nice.

I don't think you would strip the threads though, I think the gunk just makes it a little harder to close.

Also, if you use the mouthpiece as a way to pack the Hopper (which works very well), the threading will get dirty much more quickly. I actually stopped packing it that way because of this. Loading the GH is so easy though, and there are a few different ways to do it. I'm going to try loading with a doobtoob soon, I just got my hands on one.

Funny thing happened to me today! My battery died when I was hitting a fresh bowl. I forgot to turn off the unit, but the blinking lights had gone away (They only last a few seconds). So I start unscrewing the backend, swap my batteries, and when I go to but the backend back on, halfway through screwing it back in I see the lights turn on and I'm was so confused. The mechanical pen click tricked me! :)

I'm glad to see so many positive posts after the "Get Your Shit Together" post hah! I think part of what the problem is, is how much can you talk about a product after you have said something on it? I definitely feel awkward whenever I repeat myself.

The ‘Grasshopper Vaporizer’ team just posted:

1 new Announcement:

Hey Everyone,

We are well into November and production is moving smoothly. Not much has changed since our last update 15 days ago. We’ve added another member to our team and are focused on delivering more units.

The Grasshopper is rapidly making a place for itself in the vaporizer community. We are happy to see backers enjoying their new devices and sharing their experiences. Thanks for being a part of it!

zom9qzJpPGCP7uwSiP5aXicXLiMe59g0w2t4aO40VFkHGNivNrmfNFgPxPEcpjqHk0vO0jiZA8U6sqXOySgpmHckSrOvMh8pbrCAwI_hqw-LDnDUN561XN73D1XkwOY5SZZEKvP5g9moQ2n4UG2U0wtHph8ftQPq1UzZtaa5bjRl5P_9=s0-d-e1-ft

The number of issues is vastly down from what we experienced when we first entered production. As our revisions are constantly being implemented, we expect to see a very low failure rate as we move forward. The new service request form can be found under Account>Warranty Request for anyone experiencing problems.

Production is running 7-days a week to keep units flowing at our maximum rate. It’s a busy time with all effort going directly into delivery. We still expect to be through the vast majority of backers this month.

We’ll return with an update on December 1st.

The Grasshopper Team.

I don't see the new tab for the warranty claim request forum? I don't need to use it, but I'm interested in what it looks like.

I don't see it either. They've been saying their site is going to be updated for months now, maybe that will eventually someday be part of it....?

Finally got mine this morning, just before going to work. I will test it tonight but at first and quick sight, it looks like well manufactured :)
And be careful with taxes : I had to pay 45 € extra for customs fees. (Living in France)

I wonder if some of the issues people are having with the hopper are due to the fact they are not keeping the threads clean. The hopper uses the body in the circuit so it is extremely important that the threads in the backend and mouthpiece should ALWAYS be clean. Use ISO when you first get it to give the whole hopper a nice clean and then clean very frequently onwards. If you start getting resin or gunk in the threads, even a little, it could interefer with the circuit.

Just a thought.

If the threads getting dirty causing faulty units, then thats a MASSIVE design flaw, and how dare HL ship these out to people who have been waiting for years! they should offer full refunds to those backers! theve had plenty of time to engineer a better method of attachment than threads... completely unacceptable. this will make me super strongly double dare consider reading their return policies... /s

I've had this experience with other electronics. I have a flashlight called the Prometheus Beta QR v2 (copper version) and after applying too much nano oil to the threads it would constantly stay on. It took me awhile to figure out what I was doing wrong so this is good to keep in mind.

I don't see how the threads of the mouthpiece could affect the functionality of the grasshopper. The mouthpiece is just a piece of metal with a screen to prevent the herb to get in your mouth and has no further functions. GH even functions without the mouthpiece.
And the backend's thread don't become much dirty.

But isn't the mouthpiece farther from the battery than the heater?
Would they need to run a circuit through the mouthpiece?

Hey! You're spoiling a perfectly good speculative sub-plot...it was just getting going!

I do happen to like your reasoning.

Yeah your right about the mouthpiece. I was liking ti to the mechanical mods we use in the vape world where the thread on top and bottom do matter. The backend thread does matter though and I would still recommend cleaning the threads when you first get it and every so often as you use it.

I ordered in March of this year. I had an original shipping estimate of August. After them promising and failing to update the website about 5 times now I have lost all faith.

Back in June they told us they would be producing thousands of hoppers a week by the end of the month. Fast forward to now and they haven't even gotten 5,000 out the door.

I can't believe how much these guys have blatantly lied to people and people still give them another chance and another chance and another chance.

Got my refund and won't be looking back. If they somehow magically start manufacturing a respectable amount of hoppers that don't fail the day after you receive them I might reconsider buying one.

I will never forget the way this company lied to its customers for years at a time while holding on to all of the people's money though.

This has been discussed ad nauseum, you see it as lying, I see it as being overly optimistic. GHL feels more confident in their production rates and quality otherwise they wouldn't say that they expect to finish the majority of backers this month.

I'm not really sure what you are getting at, in one sentence you say that you will never forget the way this company lied to you yet in another you say that you might reconsider buying one.

Right I am sad to say I am pulling the trigger on a refund now. I've been so close to cancelling a few times and have kept on holding on because I still find myself half believing their updates that they might just finish all backers this month and all that the new parts will rectify all the previous problems.

I ordered in March with est shipping at may, and the only reason I have written this post is for any other uk pre orders that may be in my position. The thing that pushed me over the edge is the realisation that I'm looking at around £30 (~50) customs charges for a product that I might have to send back internationally etc, and realistically I could spend the same amount if the hopper goes up in price when (if) they actually get to full scale production. Anyway, vapefiend will be selling them, meaning I don't have to deal with international shipping / customs fees etc, and if vapefiend actually gets any to sell I'd imagine they'll be a bit more reliably built by then. There's talk over on Reddit that the backends are being held together with some sort of glue? Which is failing prematurely with units suffering the hot back end.

I'm not gunna risk hopper labs folding with my money, when I'm more than happy to wait until they've ironed out their problems (and buy an EQ with my money in the meantime), and may end up paying more for a hopper in the future.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, I really hope they can succeed because I like the form factor (maybe not the short battery life or hot mouthpiece/vapour). Hopefully they'll be around for Grasshopper V2, which will address these issues too.

Peace

FYI, You would only have to pay customs/duty once so long as they mark it as warranty repair. But I completely agree with you that international customers (like myself) will get killed on return shipping costs. I kind of wish they just concentrated on US orders till the failure rate is extremely low.

I can't remember who, but I know there was at least one FCer that had the exploded back end problem, I'd think one of them would have noticed if there was glue in it...

This Reddit comment chain claims that the Hopper backend is assembled with glue. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
I believe it could go either way, I remember some users saying that there was some black gunk they noticed close to the backend. I tend to think most vaporizers use glue or some kind of adhesive. As long as its not in the vapor path I'm ok with it. Think of it like eating hot dogs, their ok as long as your not thinking about all the crap thats in there lol

The back end on my fist hopper blew up. I don't recall there being glue but this was like 3 months and many ounces ago.

Got a new back end. Unit started combusting. Took me a while to warranty it because I moved.

Just got my 2nd hopper. Produced vapor once then the unit failed.

Was the 2nd backer on indiegogo purchased 4 units totoal 3 SS and a TI. I also ordered 4 extra batteries and the SS cases for all. I received my units early in distribution and between all of them I have had 7 replacements. My most recent being a Ti unit. Retuns have been painless until this last time when I was responsible for shipping it there and had to wait for it to be returned. It came back with some kind of glue or something on the area you see on the outside of the oven when you remove the cap. This one works better than any of the previous models I have had. It seems to heat up more quickly as well. They changed the way the lights work to show when the battery is dying which is nice. The front end of my replacement is cock eye and also does not fit well with my end piece. It also has some bad scuff marks up by the cap so I question if it was dropped or mishandled and that's why it is so uneven. I feel like I traded a faulty unit for a flunkie unit with goofy aesthetics. Idk if I should be disappointed or just happy I have a working one. Absolutely love this thing. Wish it was more reliable and had a better battery life.....

In other news my newest replacement has already stopped working It turns red for 15 seconds and then turns off..... Wtf.

Mine arrived today and I'm ecstatic :spliff:

First of all the box is very nice. Inside, my hopper is a very subtle shade of green, even compared to the photos I've seen. It had been sitting in my rural mailbox, the temperature outside is around 0°f so I resisted turning it on as long as I could--about 10 whole minutes lol, but it has been inside the house/car for over an hour so here we go. I loosely filled it with some of my finest freshly-cured homegrown. Set it at ~3.5 and clicked, it lit up like the future and quickly indicated that it was up to temp. Quickly like < five seconds it seemed but who's counting! I took three huge coughing hits, the flavor degraded but the volume of vapor did not. I clicked it off during the third hit, and needless to say I am not disappointed. This is the best vaporizer ever! I feel like between the crafty and this I have everything I could ever want in portables that I can really travel with--the crafty for bowls/sessions and the gh for one/three-hitters but there's overlap lol. I took a look at the avb just now and there may be a bit left in it, meaning this thing is tres efficient.

So far this is everything I could ever want in a vaporizer, I hope it works forever
(But if it doesn't hopper labs has my back, so I hope they last forever too!)

:mmmm::smug:
I took a few pics but they're nothing you guys haven't seen before and I'm ripped so screw it.

edit:
The 2nd extra battery that I recently paid for is missing, I'll drop them a line about that
