The 2016 Presidential Candidates Thread

Putin is a War Criminal
During the Dem Debate last night I was a little disheartened by Bernie's alluding to Hillary's campaign contributions from wall street as being circumspect .....
That was bound to happen because there isn't enough separating the dems to have much of a debate on the issues. Other than some (mostly) small policy issues, personalities and presentation are all there really is to make them standout from each other. That was part of why I didn't want Biden to run; I didn't want to seem him and Hillary down in that dirt. I don't know how it can really be avoided.

I think they need to concentrate on the republicans now in the Dem debates. Let us judge them now on how they will fight the republican stupidity, bigotry, and idiocy on political, social, and environmental issues. Talk about what the world looks like if Republicans win. Talk about the Supreme Court, the country's infrastructure, the alternative energy economy and the need for the country to pull together in the same direction.

Let the republicans destroy each other in their debates. Give the American people a look at how people who disagree can still cooperate with each other. It may not be as entertaining TV, but it IS how adults behave, and how government is supposed to work.

Yeah, I know, but one can wish...

I'm glad to hear you say that because I thought so too, but I wasn't sure it wasn't MY bias. He was certainly sounding more republican talking points than objective, and it was targeting Clinton. But she did fine holding him off.

Honestly, Clinton is looking very strong.

Agreed. She demonstrates a familiarity with the workings of the various branches of the federal government and of both domestic and foreign policy which is leaps and bounds ahead of all competitors for 2016. She's really smart and has a zany sense of humor which her campaign advisers have apparently told her to play down. I don't agree with every single policy statement she has ever made, but she is close enough to get my unqualified support.

Bernie continued to push for removing cannabis from the federal controlled substances schedule. Yay!

Is it just me or is this election like shooting fish in a barrel? The repubs have these bizarre ideas of going back to the gold standard, yet more deficit-funded tax breaks for the obscenely wealthy, building the Great Wall of Republiciania, rounding up millions of people who were either born here or are the parents of American-born children and deporting them, sending our troops shuffling off to war in Syria...

If only we didn't have to put up with another WHOLE YEAR of bullshit before the election. :(

And, of course, here is some more...

--------------------------------
"First up from the God Machine this week are some remarks from a leading Republican presidential candidate about the necessary religio-political qualifications for the White House.
Ben Carson, you’ll recall, caused a controversy a couple of months ago when he argued that Muslim Americans, regardless of any other consideration, should be disqualified from the presidency because of their faith. This week, Ted Cruz approached a similar line, but in reference to a very different minority.
Right Wing Watch reported on the senator’s appearance at right-wing pastor Kevin Swanson’s “National Religious Liberties Conference” in Iowa, where he reflected on a presidential religious test.
Swanson introduced Cruz by stating that Jesus Christ “is king of the President of the United States whether he will admit it or not and that president should submit to His rule and to His law” before asking Cruz to share his opinion on how important it is for “the President of the United States to fear God.”
Cruz, predictably, asserted that fear of God is absolutely vital, declaring that “any president who doesn’t begin every day on his knees isn’t fit to be commander-in-chief of this nation.”
To be sure, Swanson’s Iowa event was scandalous for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the pastor’s argument that Scripture demands the death penalty for homosexuality.
But it was nevertheless unusual to hear another GOP presidential candidate make the case that an entire group of Americans should be considered “unfit” for national leadership.
It’s probably worth noting there are plenty of faith traditions that don’t require kneeling as part of worship, though I don’t imagine Cruz was being literal. It’s more likely the senator was referring to theists vs. atheists – with the latter being dismissed as unworthy of the Oval Office.
Mother Jones’ Kevin Drum added, “[T]he press threw a fit when Ben Carson suggested that Muslims weren’t fit to be president. Will they throw a similar fit now that Cruz has suggested atheists are unfit to be president?”
My friend Rob Boston, meanwhile, highlighted the beliefs of many of the nation’s Founding Fathers, many of whom would likely be excluded from the presidency under Cruz’s test."

And, BTW, I think it is a mistake to assume that Cruz was NOT being literal. I am quite certain Cruz has a particular faith in mind when he says these things. I think it is too generous to assume otherwise.

What happened to separation between church and state? Bill Maher always reminds us that an athiest would never get the nomination for president from either republicans or the democratic party. There are religions that folks would discriminate against too.

I'm still hoping for Bernie but realize Hillary will probably get the nomination. Of course something can always happen.

Ya know, @grokit , I would rather vote for someone who voted to give the President of the United States the authority to decide how to prosecute a war, than for someone who voted to completely absolve the gun industry from ANY liability UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES from the damage wreaked by the products that they make and indiscriminately sell to the general public.

Just sayin... :)

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one, @cybrguy

First of all, I agree with Sanders that gun control laws should be a state issue at this point.

Secondly, "Gun manufacturers should not be held liable for the misuse of their products, just as any other industry isn’t held accountable for how end-consumers use their products."

Speaking of...

Maher walks a fascinating and tricky line
He's not always right, but Maher's posing provocative questions, and answering them with intelligence, consistency

Bill Maher has made his mark as the comedian who refuses to toe the party line—any party’s line. He has come under attack by both the right and the left for his positions. This week’s show exemplifies his unflinching desire to muddy the waters of extremist thinking and get viewers to ask tough questions and refuse pre-packaged scripts.

He hit the spotlight after September 11 when he rejected the idea that the 9/11 attackers were cowards. Talking with conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza, Maher stated: “We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly.” The comment cost him his ABC show. But he soon landed back on his feet with HBO for “Real time with Bill Maher.”

This week’s show, which tackled both the Paris attacks and campus protests over racial discrimination, reminds us why Maher is a comedian we need to watch. In the wake of the crises on the campuses of University of Missouri and Yale and on the heels of the Paris attacks, Maher rejected the fundamentalist thinking that often tends to frame these issues. With regard to the student protests, he attacks racism, but defends free speech. And in connection to the Paris attacks, he asks why liberals refuse to condemn the oppressive fundamentalism connected to the version of Islam practiced by terrorists...

Much more here.

Blaming gun makers for shootings is like blaming knife makers for someone getting stabbed.

People need to learn to make better choices with their lives.

*Edit*

Personal responsibility has become a thing of the past.

Yes what happens when suicidal terrorists go on a hammer attack, do we outlaw hand tools?
The world trade center was supposedly brought down with boxcutters...
Sadly if you want to stop a hammer attacker, you will need a "bigger hammer".

Assault weapons and large magazines for ANY weapons are meant for killing people, and only for killing people. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for such weapons to be sold to or available to the public. They are MILITARY WEAPONS and should NOT be sold to civilians.

Period.

Back to the topic at hand...

I don't care if it's Bernie or Hillary (Although I am feeling the Bern) as long as Elizabeth Warren is VP!

*Edit*

@cybrguy

Where I come from we call that an opinion, not a fact. I find multiple uses for my extended magazine other than killing people. Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean it should be illegal. Period.

The area where I live the owners of a med mj dispensary were trying to get the county fair grounds available for their Wa Farmers Market for medical cannabis a couple Saturday's a month. They were denied to be able to do that because it was med cannabis. Folks heard and complained. I drive by the fair grounds quite often and see gun shows at least once a month there. Something is wrong IMO. It's things like this that really pisses me off. I'm calling the county on Monday, I have the name of the gentleman I need to contact. I know wrong thread.

They were forced to have their market inside of their dispensary. It's a very small space without adequate parking.

Don't get me wrong, gun laws in the US need to be updated. I am very wary of outright making anything else illegal though. Stronger background checks and better mental health screenings will go a long way in decreasing the number of gun deaths in this country.

Warren VP 2016!

I don't think Independents appreciated a junior senator from Texas shutting down the government over not getting his way. It was an impossible task: expecting Obama to back out of his crowning jewel, the ACA. For all the propaganda the Right has cooked up on ACA it wasn't enough to get Obama and the Democratic Senate to back down, and it hurt the Republicans, just as their treatment of undocumented is going to backfire on them. Cruz just appeals to his base.

I also love how his base are the ones that complain about Obama not being from America when Cruz is from Canada.

Ohh, if irony was made of chocolate...

@macbill - This month I moved from healthcare coverage via cobra to ACA. Since my cobra coverage ends this month/November I also had to establish coverage under the ACA for December 2015 as well as getting coverage for 2016. This is for the wife and I. Here's the transition....

- Cobra = $962 per month for medical and dental. Low deductible silver level.
- ACA for Dec. 2015 = $1015 per month for medical and dental. Lowest cost plan available, bronze high deductible. Coverage is about half as comprehensive as cobra.
- ACA for 2016 = $1350 per month for medical and dental. Silver plan, high deductible. Tried to do a apples to apples with the silver cobra plan but that would have cost me between $1500 to $1700.

I talked to 4 different ACA agents as I worked my way through and I asked each how the increase in premiums for substantially less coverage was playing out. Each agent relayed that there are a lot of angry people out there.

I'm not exactly in love with the ACA and I'm not exactly feeling the love from the ACA.....

That's because the original ACA was watered down to what it is today. When the public option was taken away so was the affordability for most people.

OK. So......now that healthcare for 2016 will be over 27% of my household budget and it's about half of the coverage for the inflated price.....I hear the repubs vowing to dismantle it and I don't hear the dems describing how they'll fix it.....

I'd love to hear the repubs or the dems describe how this gets fixed without shutting it down.

How is this winning?

Now prior to ACA, when your COBRA coverage which extended your old work insurance expired, you would have had what options? Before ACA I ended up letting cobra lapse and going without any health care, because plans on the individual market were prohibitively expensive. Insurance was no longer an option. Now I have insurance again. So you have to ask: compared to what?
