Discontinued The Grasshopper

Another day, another new Grasshopper body, another blue/red lights of death.

I received my grasshopper back today after returning the whole thing for their evaluation and warranty service. This is now the third Grasshopper body I have received (to go with three clicker backends). After using it once, I have the dreaded blue/red lights of death. 3 bodies, now on to a fourth. This one I would have hoped would have been from the new parts since it was just shipped this week.

We should have confidence why?

Man, that's tough. I guess people are keeping the faith because when it works, it's great? Unfortunately, it's the working part that's dragging it down it seems.

I wonder if it's some problem that occurs during shipping. Temperature changes? Humidity? Being tossed around (though it was packed very nicely and the shipping box even has a cradle that snugly fits the GH box)? I dunno, but @BuzzDanklin and @slcbdco both picked theirs up in person, and theirs both still work. Not sure if @Just Justin picked his up or had it shipped.

I realize the above isn't very scientific. It's just a supposition.

My first one lasted many months. Each new part they have been sending lasts less and less time than the prior one before it malfunctions. If these things couldn't take shipping, they certainly won't last very long with the general wear and tear of life.

I've had all of mine shipped, 4 in total and none had issues. Two were for testing and two are mine, so far so good. I use them everyday and its tough to beat the convenience, speed, vapor and portability.

I'm sorry @nonbeliever that your having those issues........I hope they are able to really get to the bottom of this red/blue lights thing or else.......!

@Just Justin I wonder what is so different from yours verse the new ones. New technology should trump old technology.:hmm:

It seems the first units worked....the newer ones don't. Maybe they should go back to using the beta unit parts as they seem more reliable. It seems the people with the working units are beta units or first batch units, this is speculation of course.

As I am not a backer all I can do is feel horrible for those that get a unit that lasts a chamber or 2 then have to send it back 2, 3, 4 times.

Everyday I read this thread I hope for some positive news, it was entertaining for about a day. Now it's just sad. I hope GHL gets this figured out, I am still very, very curious and interested in the hopper but I don't know if I have the patience or money to send it back every other day.

Does anyone here have a fully functional old and new unit? If so, do you notice any physical differences?
Are the SS units failing more than the Ti ones or vice versa? If there are solid reliable units people use daily out there, then it must be something relatively simple that is being overlooked in assembly.
Just my :2c:

I have a first run green and brand new grey that both work, no problems:tup:

So you have literally only had both units for a few weeks.

I want to know if a beta grasshopper still works, or the few out after that.

My question I guess is how long was the longest working grasshopper before it needed any part replaced.

Tested my buddy's who ordered with me (nov 2013), serials #0008xx.
Received them right after the new parts shipment.
They ran identical, hot back end and about 2 chambers per charge.

He isn't present on-line and is a new vape user, but he found it to hit hard, and had no overheating problems.

Turning it off mid/end draw and letting it cool between hits does let it run flaw free. But who has that kind of patience ;). I would have sacrificed a little size or girth to accommodate a bigger battery and heat-sink, or whatever would make it run cooler, IMO.

I'm really wondering about the heat issue. The disparity in opinions on it is confusing. Are the parts really that variable?

I think i've had mine for an over a month now and it's still going strong *knock on wood*.

What i'm trying to understand is why there's so many failures still and how HL hasn't figured out the issue yet. The GH itself isn't made up of many parts. I would like to think that the body is more or less constant, which would leave either the electronics (battery/circuit board) or the actual design.

I just tried it again. Red lights never went off, and smoke started coming out the led/airhles. This one is clearly toast. Can't wait to see how long it takes to hear back from HL and what happens with the next body they send me.

It really does seem they are going backwards, not forwards.

Many vapes & accessories. Always happy to help
If I had my Zion already, I would likely cancel my pre order... Now I still wait and see..and hope. definitely losing faith as it's getting even more worrisome over time. Seems they are speeding up things to the cost of quality (that hasn't even been reliable before)... I'm still on the boat, but I know how to swim. :|

I wonder if they are getting parts that are out of spec? Perhaps the initial batches from the suppliers had tighter quality control and it slipped during full scale production. That would account for the initial units working well and subsequent ones having issues.

even crafty/mighty from storz and bickels well known for their volcano and a player in the "vape industry" have /had a lot of faulty units send back by customer...

Maybe people are over using the units, but if that would be the problem they shouod have installed an auto shut off or find another solution and off course a solid vape in my opinion should be used as often and hard as you want without any problems. or maybe people blow in the gh accidentaly or without conscious which you should not do... but also if this should be the case there should be a solution to this from gh... (also if you use a watertool and forget to take the gh off the glasstool before clearing, is possible to blow air back in your hopper or am I wrong?)

enough speculation...
also it is normal that people with complaints post their bad experience more often then people who are happy with their gh so the reactions we get here in the forum are biaw3d and not really representative in my opinion...

so enough speculation!

I think the parts are more likely the same and the variable variable is the user.
Or the problem is during assembly. I think the early ones were all assembled by Trevor and Matt. With new and more hands on deck, I think they should look (and probably are) at qc of assembly.

Selection bias is a real thing and you are right that it happens often.

However, that does not explain how someone could be on their fourth unit...especially since @nonbeliever had one that lasted many months then quick fails afterwards for the next three. That speaks to a bigger issue...

@nonbeliever did anything change with your usage habits around the time the first one failed and when you used the next three? Do they offer any explaination as to why these are failing? I would be demanding root cause of failure (not that they are obligated to give it to you...)
