only has a 3/4" stroke but its super small so making a matching frame would be small too. shity expensive price though.

yep. i looked at those little jacks and was pretty interested. then i saw the price.

thanks for the idea with the super glue. i may look for a high temp epoxy or maybe even just use JBW. would be cool if it was clear.

A block I made recently had the same issue of magnet detachment.

Jb-weld is the best adhesive for this application, and I don't think it's the source of the problem. Your blocks have automatic heat control, so there's no way it's a thermal failure of the adhesive.

The problem is most likely a lack of adhesion to the smooth surface of the magnet. You could either embed the magnet in jb-weld, or rough the outside of the magnet with sand paper or a rotary tool, or do both.

If you decide to use a cover sheet instead, I'd recommend PTFE instead of plexiglass. It's great for things like this- it has a good mix of toughness, temperature resistance, and affordability. The sheet could be screwed in place, but the screws must be set carefully to avoid damage during compression cycles.

i think ill stick with JBW and set them deeper and cover them in the JBW. then smooth it out.

I've been using a $24 Remington wet2dry 2" straightener with the 4" hart c-clamp (found in this thread). Get great quality and yield at lowest temp- unplug&wait 20-30 seconds before press. Fully tighten clamp and wait 10-30 sec...(reinforced iron with wood planks on both sides of iron)

This set has been working for me thru a handful of zips over the past 6 mo.

Also, save your chips and make EC tincture. Amazing.

So I thought I'd share my uber noob first foray here to help encourage other noobs who might be timid to jump in now that there's all this hardcore talk of super machines (which I love, keep it up, can't wait to hear what optimal pressures you guys come up with, if you share, thanks).

I hit the dispensary and got a 2g of each of their freshest, most frostiest, top shelf buds:
- White Widow (long time fav hybrid for its Indica stone + Sativa energy)
- Crown OG (new to me, but attractive for its high THC, nighttime-centric stone)

I put a piece of orange peel in each to hydrate (I always store my buds like this in the fridge for optimum vaping, but I put a really big piece in each to really hydrate for pressing). The Crown OG was super dank anyway so I started with that after about an hour (I'll save the White Widow for next time).

I have no hair straightener so I took my iron, put an old pan under it with a wood block under that. My heat gun measured the iron at 220 and the pan at 180. I put a 1/2 gram of Crown OG in a little parchment under the iron and did a b-boy handplant on it for 4 seconds until I heard a nice rosin flow (I knew those skills would pay off later in life). After a second press, it measured at 0.065 (13%). Satisfied that I wasn't totally wasting my bud, I pressed the rest of the 2 grams, 1/2 gram at a time. Total yield was 0.27g (13.5% of the original 2 grams).

SO for a couple months now, I've been buying 1/2 grams of wax concentrate from the dispensary and I juice them into vape pen tanks. I usually do somewhere between 1-to-3, 1-to-4 ratio of concentrate to solution so I did the same with the rosin and this 1/4g fit nice in my 1.5ml tank.

Now, the color amazes me. The picture doesn't show it well enough, but it is so yellow compared to more common orange colored wax I pick up from the dispensary. And the FLAVOR!!! Holy crap! I did not expect anything from the flavor because my vape juice mixes I blend generally don't taste much like the wax concentrate that's in them. I was previously blaming that on the peg/pg/vg mix covering the flavor from the wax, but it's clearly more a case of the flavor just not being in the wax compared to my rosin. Holy crap! I can't say that enough.

Now, the buzz. Damn! I really can't believe this. This 1/4g is probably diluted more than usual but a couple puffs completely sent me. I had vaped some of the leftover chips earlier as an experiment (got some body buzz and mild head effects, I'll cook with them), and I had previously had some pulls from my other tank of leftover juice from last week (wax in that juice was from the dispensary), so I wasn't baseline 'sober' or anything to begin with. Regardless, those couple puffs off this new juice from the rosin I pressed pierced through it all. It has an undeniably pronounced effect. This is what I miss! I've done nothing but vape super killer buds for almost 4 years now. I'm really used to flavor and full spectrum effects. I've been missing that with the wax concentrates I've been vaping the past couple months (in dab pens and juiced into vape tanks). The high has felt monotone, this rosin is a whole different feeling. I'm not imagining it.

I'm very happy with this entire concept. I can now buy my favorite strains and puff them conveniently in vape tanks while still enjoying the strain specific effects. You guys rock. I'd seen all this on YouTube since the spring but didn't think it was relevant to me. I'm really glad I tried. I was looking into other ways to re-introduce terpenes into the vape juices I've been mixing with dispensary wax. Fuck that. I'll just press rosin. This is the shit. Looking forward to dialing in an actual press setup and improving the yield!

i have been talking to the mash mesh people a bit and they are cool as hell. anyway, i was asking about their mesh and the thread used to sew them together. they advised that its the same material as the mesh itself. silk screen mesh. they are also a silk screen supplier. so i mentioned SS mesh to them and they advised that thay have been experimenting more with SS mesh. of which i like the idea of. ive got a bunch left for solvent extraction that wont be used anymore.

my plates are currently 1.5" x 3.75" and i plan on trying to make some bags or use SS mesh to press with. my idea was to make a filter that leaves an 1/8" border around the filter in relation to the plate. i imagine, after seeing bubblemans return on his dnail press, that with hydraulic force behind it will work very well. if not then im going to cut some 1.5 x 1.5 squares of the aluminum my plates are made of and stack them to my current plates. shouldnt need smaller heaters or new holes since aluminum is such a great heat conductor. will simply have to turn the heaters up a tad higher than where I currently run them. of which is already very low.

lol... so in short... 1.5" x 1.5" does sound like an ideal size for squishing nugs.

also, anyone know of a thin material that can handle some heat and lots of pressure? not wood. i need to cover these magnets i have embedded into my wood insulators. they keep popping out. ive used jb weld and gorilla glue and they wont hold but more than a few days. looking for something that the magnets will still work well THROUGH. like 1/16" thick plexi or something. any ideas?

I don't want to derail this thread too much in that direction (I'll post more about this in the thc ecig thread), but I'm using a pg/vg mix called Vapeur Extract. It rated a little better tasting than ejmix and puffmagic by people in the ecig thread, but it's not one of the expensive ones with terpenes in it. It still tastes pretty bad when mixed with normal wax if you don't add some flavor. I don't taste that badness at all anymore when mixed with this rosin.

I have that same one bookmarked from a previous search for small jacks. Saw some interesting hydraulic punches also that were even smaller, but more expensive. Travel seems maybe too small? Maybe not though, don't know. But ya, too expensive.

I have my eyes on a pretty cheap, electric scissor jack, but I think I'll start as cheap as possible with a little bottle.

That's an excellent yield for a setup most people have already sitting in their homes. Thanks for sharing the tek! You may want to upgrade down the road but this sounds like a great way to get started or for a simple low cost setup.

I actually started pressing it while the plates were at room temp and then turned on the heat. that way there was alot of compression already applied before the parchment was warm preventing alot of the deformation I usually see and it kept the flowers from spreading out alot like often noted with rehydrated flowers.

the heaters peaked at 240°f but it actually collects better because lower temp stuff pushes out first followed by the higher temp stuff.

Thanks. Ya, this was a total test to see if I could do it with any degree of success using just whatever I had laying around. I figured if that worked then I'd feel justified exploring this further. I'm happy with the result so I'll definitely start building a little press now. I appreciate the recurring encouragements in this thread for people to just try it out with something quick and simple so I figured I'd share to help keep that going. :)

Has anyone tried re-hydrating chips before doing the second press? I did that with my little test yesterday and it seemed like I was getting more action, but it was such a small, hack, first try I can't really comment on it with accuracy. Thoughts?

So I've decided I will give rosin squishing a try. For the amount of oil I use (less that 1/4 gram a week) this should be very convenient for me.

I have bought this straightener. It ranges from 100 - 230 C.

And I got this clamp. It has 276kg of clamping force.

Do you guys think I should remove the heating plates and JB weld them to some ply wood/MDF then glue them to the clamp (@Jeffrey Dabs style)? Or should I just stick the straightener in the clamp for now?

After some inspiration provided by you guys, I just pressed out 4g with the burrito tech. First 2g squished out .35, bringing temps up slowly to 200 ish, over a minute press length. Second 2g started from hot. Only got out .22. Same flowers/humidity in both batch, only difference was starting temp.

We were using this clamp just straight on the straighteners the other day and getting pretty good results.

You'd almost certainly get better results mounting the heating plates but it depends on the strength of the straighteners housing I suppose

Nope, but it will definitely be posted here as soon as there's news.

For a rosin setup I'm currently leaning towards this 10-ton hydraulic press and RosinWorks plates, seems to be the current favourite for sub-$1000 bracket. Everything is standard and should just fit together without much futzing, it's low maintenance and easy to fix (ie not a million parts) and at 10 Tons it should have longevity while the tek continues to evolve. Down the road you should be able to upgrade the plates and since the press uses a standard size you can resell them after too.

My own thoughts are that if a high pressure device is used then starting slow might allow rosin that still has terps, to squeeze out beyond the 'warm zone' before slowly ramping up the temps, to gradually encourage the more stubborn components to leave what has eventually become the 'hot zone'.
This would hopefully result in a product made up of components all the way from very low temp/very high pressure oils, right up to high pressure/high temp oils.
Might mean more of a full spectrum experience?

(Zero experience here BTW, just trying to contribute to the crowd brain, absolutely no criticism of other ideas/approaches intended)

my plates reach setpoint in around 2minutes or less... I havnt timed it I just know mine has fairly rapid heat up due to the thin aluminum plates.
although they heat quick they also cool quick and dont retain as much heat as the vice itself does. but they are surface mounted metal on metal with jbweld... and have become indented from squishing.... fuck... some days I love being a pauper... but some of the time I get a little jealous in this thread with all these grand devices I know I cant ever afford... anyway...

if you had thicker plates you would just need higher wattage elemets. the 600 watt heater I have on the gecko has 2x 300watt cartridge heaters that can warm a solid aluminum block 6"x6"x1" thick in under 15 minutes with a pid control.

you asked me how it was before and I hadnt tried it yet. it is a nice full spectrum buzz... like vaping flowers only way stronger and faster hitting.

I love a buzz from flowers but I have to vape so much it is not a timely thing to sit down for a fast bowl.

I have an unfortunately high tolerance so concentration is key for my homeostatic wellbeing.

this is encouraging... I put 1.5g in and pulled .30 out in one try. got more put on a second warmer press but I didnt weigh it cause I wanted to see how it tasted.

although it was greener it didnt have the off taste that ground flowers pressed did although it shared a similar shade.

keep in mind all my materials are dry and cured for over 6months so I don't have anything new to try.

oh to have fresh flowers. it would be bliss.

so who else wants to try "heat ramp tech" with "burrito tech" in "vice tech"?
