Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

So do you guys test for contaminates in the rosin? Or is it just cannabanoid content? I know we all have agreed parchment is safe but I guess I can't help shaking the feeling it may leech something into our product. Maybe I'm just that paranoid stoner again, it hasn't stopped me pressing yet lol

Good question. On that specific sample of rosin, only a cannabinoid profile was requested.

As far as contaminants go, we have a diverse set of tests but they do not include what would be necessary to answer this question.

What we offer besides cannabinoid and terpene profiles are

1) VOCs (aka residual solvents)
2) Mycotoxins
3) Heavy Metals and Nutrients
4) Mold / Mildew / Fungus / Yeast
5) E.coli / Salmonella
6) Pesticide array (11 types I think?)
7) Sex Determination (tell very early if they are M or F)

To detect other things, it depends on the equipment and methodology used. In general, we have to identify a compound we'd like to detect and then purchase a "standard" of that compound and calibrate and/or program the equipment to detect it. That's a high simplification, but I think you'll understand.

I've been very interested to know if anything from the parchment is transferring also. Maybe someone in the industry will tackle it at some point though.

bubbleman put up a video recently discussing his new rosin bags and he did some squishing in the vid. anyway he was using some material of unknown make up. said as soon as they are sure its totally safe that they would then reveal the name of the material. hopefully this stuff will replace parchment and then we wont have to worry about it.

then again if its around the price of Slick Sheet and not reusable then ill be back to parchment.

I have gone through so many nugs and I am just awful at this. i can watch my friends do it with way more success than me. i've watched the pros and seen youtube vids and read the guides... i just get almost no yield every time. i even see other people use my iron and get much more yield than me...
what are the secrets here? a lot of the time i can see the rosiny oil still inside the nugs shiny when they're pressed flat. those times i just break up the flat nug into my grinder and vape the flat nug.

@Joel W. & @shark sandwich

thanks for your input on the subject.

so my new build has begun... well at least the new parts have been ordered. im going to frame in a 4ton bottle jack in some 3/8" steel plates with 1/2" threaded rod (at the corners for a total of 4) holding it together. this setup should have zero problems getting to 6000 lbs.

my plates and heaters are still good and will be adapted to the new press. not exactly sure how soon ill have it all, but it should be at most a week. pics to come!
try taking the buds you pressed but couldnt get the rosin out of... and get them wet. literally. I judt had some that wouldn't milk... ran the tap over them real quick shook the chips a couple stacked up and then repressed with them moist. instant flow. also... try waiting a few seconds before putting the final crush on the vice. that way the whole bud has time to warm up before you put the hurts on it.

More pressure. Highly advise a clamp or press of some sort.

More pressure will help and also moisture of the bud. If the bud is below 60% moisture (humidity) I don't think it works very well. As others have said, moisture/steam helps the oil flow away from the bud and onto the parchment.

The bud I was pressing last night was at 64% humidity and it seemed to work well. I may try to go higher (in the 70s or maybe even 80s) once I have more time to experiment!

Also, I would agree that Rosin is just as strong as bho if not stronger (maybe because of the higher terpene profile). I got just as medicated (if not more) off the rosin I dabbed last night compared to BHO made from the same strain (even from the same plant). Just my experience :D

For those with D-Nail presses on order, they're finally shipping!

Cannot wait for the new material to come out. It should be reusable and more durable than the SlickSheet so even if it were pricey that would make up for it.

Mine will be here Thursday! Woot!

Showdown between the d-nail press and the @Joel W. jaws soon to come

EDIT:

I got around to weighing a couple squishes.

White Diesel Haze midgrade potency:
squished 0.87, return 0.09, yield ~10%

Skunk #1 better-grade potency:
squished 0.84, return 0.16g, yield ~19%

Im definitely happy with these returns for solventless!

Does anyone take their first squished chip and fold it up to make it thicker with a smaller diameter for the second squish? This really seemed to help squeeze every last drop out using the setup I have :) some little tiny pieces of material were left behind on the parchment with this fold method. None got in the surrounding oil though so all is good :D

EDIT 2:

No way! Now I'm even more excited!

When I made BHO with my SoMango strain (~10% CBD, 10% THC) I got around an 11% return IIRC.

I just squeezed 0.61g and got 0.09g back! Almost a 15% yield.

I bumped up the temp to 250F because it was high CBD. Don't know if this was necessary or not. Still tastes damn amazing. Best flavored oil I have ever had.

More Super Skunk. Pretty stable. Stays upright for about 10 seconds before folding over. Didn't weigh it. Way too vaked :smug:

If you're doin' short presses maybe a bit higher, I'm hitting around 240f (what it says) with a vise for ~10 seconds and I'm getting a lot of pressure on it and the buds were juicing nicely. I just pressed some bone dry material (crumbles in the fingers) with the usual tech and it came out darker, almost greenish, but still relatively tasty. Seems the chlorophyll comes out easier, maybe it was a fluke. I was getting similar results when I did "micro" runs for bho, but this is way easier and much safer and I don't have to worry about residuals and open ventilation and fixing compressors. Very tasty stuff if you hit it at lower temps and carb cap it. I don't inhale the last ~15-20% on the nail at the end 'cause that's where the taste starts to go off for me... My problem lately has been my rosin being a bit too stable and chipping off and flying away when collecting... Your oil is looking very good. I've also done the rosin chip folding and 2nd pressing. Not as tasty... lately I've been mixing 2nd press with some flowers for actual vapes, seems to shine there for me.

I feel like something like this could work well for rosin, if you put them in with it an hour before squishing.
http://www.australianvaporizers.com.au/store/75-humidipak-2-way-humidity-control-packet-8-grams.html
I've read of others using them but it more like a couple days rather than an hour.

I still haven't popped my rosin cherry but I love seeing everyone's setups and am just absorbing info for now. I'll probably try to cobble something together in the next few months especially as more products come to market. For now I'm making some super tasty QWET shatter that'll hold me over and I'm focusing my efforts on making better homemade cannabis lotions which I'll hopefully share soon in another thread once I've made more progress.

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
I’m quite new and infrequent at Rosin (prefer vaping buds personally), and found so far that I’m fine with the simplistic means of just the hair straightener & parchment that it’s ‘enough’ for my needs due to my disabilities (physical, but mostly the brain injury that makes it an impossible task to identify, sort, acquire, all the pieces to make a more ‘ease of use’ set up in this tech’s infancy and constant updating techniques) – even though I quite enjoy following along and watching the progression members and others are making and enjoying ;) … that is until something more concrete is developed and that I can hopefully purchase as a complete set-up at a reasonable buck here in Canaduhh to warrant the expense.

I just wanted to pipe in and share something I recently tried when I was having difficulty with returns that I eventually found was related more to lack of moisture content than strain/quality….

I decided to try some light moisturizing a bud supply I had that felt too dry before pressing. All I did was take a small container of Grappa (grape alcohol) that was distilled down to @ 95% and wet 2 fingers before mildly handling the bud to place in the parchment (soft roll with the fingers) to press…

This accomplished a few positive things for me…

- No more crumbled dry bits in my rosin

- A shit-ton more extraction

- More heat (280 F) for about 6 seconds til done (sizzle sizzle)

- A lighter and cleaner (looking) Rosin with better/more flavor (sometimes shatter, usually pull and snap)

- Sticky fingers that give me a tiny bit of finger hash in the end to drop on some dry sift to torch melt in a hand pipe (ya, I still enjoy hashes, import especially, combustion or otherwise – sue me :p)

I apologize for not taking weight notes and extraction percentages (and pictures this round), but my disabilities require me to take/make/do ‘everything’ with a K.I.S.S. attitude to avoid becoming obsessive and overwhelmed with anything of interest.

All I can state with certainty is that the results provided with my finding and attempt has made Rosin play more enjoyable and rewarding – for ME ! And I’ve been taking the pressings and dropping them in a large mason of Grappa to long soak in my cold cellar in hopes that in time it will produce a potent decarbed eye-dropper oral tincture.

Thanks for reading !

To me this sounds good and fairly logical but kind of defeats the purpose of 'solventless'.

True, however, my thought on this is two fold:

I'm not a purist (no malice towards those that are)
The very little amount of natural alcohol used (light finger roll with moist finger tips) 'should' evaporate with the heat and pressure... and if it 'all' doesn't, so what lol.. at least it's not ISO or Butane :D

did you get them wet after they were squished into pucks already?

also, isnt there such thing as too much moisture? seems like running them (even quickly) under tap water would introduce more moisture than needed/wanted...? either way it def sounds like part of my problem is moisture and the other is pressure. both will be remedied soon!

my bottle jack has arrived and is going to be perfect! i also received the threaded rod. all i need now is the top and bottom frame plates and some nuts for the threaded rod.

my new press will have the capability of producing way more pressure than is needed so i will have to find the sweet spot. that combined with making sure the nugs are hydrated should produce the results i am after.

onward!!!

Cannot wait for the new material to come out. It should be reusable and more durable than the SlickSheet so even if it were pricey that would make up for it.

oh i am def interested. i hope it wont be crazy expensive.

random question for everyone... where is a good place to pick up one of those little ball point dabbers most are using in here?

i dont dab with a traditional nail setup so i dont really need any dabbers. until now for rosin collection.

yes they had been pressed flat with the rosin press and produced poor yield. the material had been zip lock stored sovall the moisture had left. the rest I rehydrated overnight with proximity moisture from a damp paper towl in a sealed ziplock.

where some are using better and better material to make their results look better im just trying diffrent ways to replicate poor quality product to tryvand breath new life into it.

even with direct contact with moist2 in the press it still came out pullsnap to shatter and the only downside is it sizzled on a nail a couple times. ie residual solvent lol.

but when your solvent was water... it doesnt matter really.

i know for sure rosin is better than bho because i have had people who can make it work do it in front of me with my own nuggets and it worked. i could try a clamp but i thought if you press down for too long, it destroys the rosin.

could it be a problem with the hair straightener i bought? it goes to pretty high temps but i keep it around 300ish.

nice video! that second press was a bit longer than 1 min. do you think, with temps at 220 or lower, that the squish time really doesnt matter? is there any negative to squishing longer if its producing a quality return?

also, about moisturizing the flowers... what would be the negative to add a bit of water to all flowers regardless of their quality? could it possibly make extraction more efficient in any case?

i should have all materials for my new press this friday. ill be back to squishing on sat. then i can perform some experiments myself to share with my FC fam.

i havent had a dab in about a week. only flowers. im dyin over here!

@EpicNameGuy - thanks for the info! Very interesting! I wish I could find the reference to the tests I've seen. I know I saw them pop up in one of these threads (it's mostly why I asked, so someone else might pipe up if they have more info, or remember where those other results were).

http://cityplotter.nl/product/hitte...-drukpers-zwart-black-gratis-vinyl-10-pakket/

For the European members... Do not have one myself so I cannot say if it works or not, but it looks suspiciously allot like the D nail press to me. Probably will be different in certain ways but it is definitely more accessible at that price point.

I think a lot of places sell similar t-shirt presses. This place has a lot of options:
http://www.proworldinc.com/heat-transfer-press.html?dir=asc&order=price

Kind of funny that a bunch of extraction sites have popped up that are reselling the exact same hardware labelled as rosin presses, but I guess it makes sense, capitalize!! For example:

@poonman Dude! Thanks! Well, completely disregard my earlier question then. I wish I could remember which thread linked the 30% thc because that's the only one I'd seen and it just didn't make sense (why I asked).

These results look much more in line with what I'd expect from these concentrated looking extractions. Thanks again for the link.
