Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Mesh bag was too big for the amount you used, those big bags are for big amounts of material. I'm sure if you rolled it up or folded it some you could press it out.
Yeah I folded it up as much as I could like bubbleman did in his video but it still didn't work for me. It might work when I can use more pressure and not have plates that bend. So maybe Monday I'll try again :D

But I think you are right, they are meant to be used with more material.

Son of a bitch, I have all this rosin and full melt and I can't dab it now. My heater coil (very recent, less than a month old) just stopped delivering heat yesterday (still measures temp when you plug it in though).

Tested it on my multiple analogue d-nails and 1.2 unit, definitely the coil not working. I'm vaping full melt in the Mighty while I wait, which is nice, but even the Mighty battery does not hold up to rosin and full melt after a couple of bowls!

Yeah dude just go back to good old torch with a digital timer on your mobile.
It won't be as good as the d-nail but it'll be pretty close man. You'll also face less trouble with waiting on cool down times in between cleaning because it will naturally cool down on it's own after each hit XD. I'm surprised you don't have spare coils with your analogues though? If you're keen to use the mighty but are having battery issues then I suggest just keeping it hooked up to the power.

If I was in your position i'd just be taking out my trusty blowtorch though :brow:

Funny thing, I just sold my spare standard flat coil as I wait for a new extended life flat coil to come through. Very unlucky timing.

Also can't torch anything but SiC which isn't in the same league as the other halos for flavor IME (although SiC probably beats both other halos in clouds and speed of vaporization).

I did a torch dab with the SiC dish and it went pretty well, slightly too hot but definitely out of the league of torch dabs with anything else. Dabbed some 3 star trim run bubble rosin rather than full melt, don't wanna risk going too hot on full melt, that flavor must be enjoyed at perfect temps - anything less wouldn't do the material justice. Still, plenty of rosin, I won't want for dabs until another coil gets here! Definitely keep a few coils on hand enail people, you'll thank yourselves later!

BTW to those interested: This torch situation gave me a good chance to use my 45 degree infiniti adapter on my worked rig since I am not one to torch a nail attached to an expensive dropdown!

The 45 degree adapter is made to have a halo or infiniti dish put on top and any compatible base below.

I put my SiC on the adapter on my 1.4 base, torched for 70 seconds from the bottom/side corner of the dish and then let it cool down for 85 seconds (should have gone 95). No heat on the ti base of the nail past the 45 adapter, let alone the cheap 14 mtm adapter nor the downstem/perc below. This is good stable setup for those who wanna torch dab on a 45 degree rig and keep the heat right away from their more precious glass/dropdowns :)

You don't do torch style at all?
Not with my best extracts, no. It may sound very picky but I don't wanna risk dabbing something uniquely terpalicious at too high a temp because of the inexactitudes entailed by torch dabs. For more plentiful/less outstanding extracts, I would chance the torch and SiC nail ;)

I've gone to vaping some 4 star dry ice sift in my Mighty and dabbing rosin/shatter on my SiC with torch for now, the full melts and live resins etc can all wait til my new heater arrives. It takes me back to what I was limited to medicating with not so long ago before expanding my extraction quiver - and certainly not a bad selection to be left with for what will not be all that long!

I just lost my rosin virginity.

me too! well last night. my press is complete and my maiden voyage was last night. i gotta say, it was totally worth all of the work. i was in flavor heaven. it was amazing. and very potent.

a couple of things tho... the return was sappy and not stable at all. i had the candy thermometer reading right at about 215-220F. squished two small buds that weighed .5g total. squished for about 45s-1m and after about 5 seconds i could hear it sizzling. should i hear sizzle at 220F? i thought that temp was considered low for rosin tech? i did not expect to hear sizzle. anyway the first press didnt really produce as much as expected, but it was amazing. it was yellow clear very similar to @BoogerMan's pic above. so in experimentation mode i pressed it again. got a tad more the second time and it was slightly darker in color. also tasted really good. i squished that puck about 4-5 times each time getting a sappy return. each press darker in color and a step down in flavor. what is fucking with me is that the puck appears to be coated in oil after the press. like its not all pushing away.

so i get a sappy return. puck still covered in rosin. im hearing sizzling at 220F.

reasons for these could be that my buds are to dry. my little vise isnt producing enough pressure. or...?

im about to snap some pics of my setup. ill post them shortly. i really liked the way it turned out! i just may need a more stout vise.

UPDATED PICS:

heaters wired up.

jaw/plate detail. pretty clean, but i did rush on a few things. like the wood trim is there to frame in the stock vise jaw. so the plates sit flush with each other. anyway, with more time they would look a bit nicer. you can see the magnets in the wood. that shit works perfectly.

here you can see how well the cart heaters fit.

and this is what she looks like set up and ready to squish

and finally a random shot of my old hakko vapes. one of which used to run off the dimmer box in the pic above. the other is temp adjustable. no reason at all for posing these.

Rosin vise table under construction. I don't have room for a work bench in my garage so I am having to make a little something so I can get this vise bolted down :)

Bottom is a metal frame made for a rotary arm saw (IIRC). It is very sturdy and pretty heavy duty. I got it used for $30 on Craigslist. The guy just put a new coat of gray rustoleum on it too so it looks brand new

The black top is 1/2" thick MDF wood painted black. I hope this is thick enough to withstand me cranking down on the vise. If it starts to break I'll go up to 3/4" but I don't think I'll need to (hopefully)

Tomorrow I'll be bolting the wood down to the metal frame with 3/8" bolts (gotta let the paint dry a little more). Then I can bolt down the vise and start figuring out placement for the 2 soldering iron controllers :D

EDIT:

How does this layout look? Any suggestions?

I will be running all wires under the table so it looks nice and clean. I may drill a hole to the right of the vise that I can slide my torque wrench through as a nice holder.

Hmmm am I missing anything that should belong up there? Maybe attach a small box to hold square pieces of parchment :hmm: that about cover it?

EDIT 2:

I think I like this layout better. I was thinking I had to have the irons on the same side but I can just flip one of the jaws and have an iron on each side :D this looks much better to me.

ok folks... i need help

my latest attempt to squish didnt yield barely anything. i can hear it sizzling. and after the squish i grinded the puck and vaped it. it definitely has tons in there that is not pushing away from the puck when squished. not to mention that i got a 1.25g return from a qwet wash of a 1/4 of the same batch. so i know the flowers are good. just not why im getting such a low return via rosin tech.

are my flowers too dry?

is my vise to weak?

im sure there is a reason for this, but im not sure where to start. help please!!!

Just so Dab HAppy!
I wonder this also. I was doing a rosin test on my flowers right upon purchase. At first I was using the yield as a rule of thumb for how good the buds were. Then I started getting strains that were definitely as good if not better than the last strain and I would do the rosin test and I would get little to no yield.

I have a really dense purple flower right now for instance. It gives great cloudy hits and the effects are nice from it when vaped as a flower. When I tried to Rosin press it I got so little I didn't want to try squishing again.

yep. the flowers im using are def dense. maybe breaking them down a bit and using a filter bag will be the ticket...?

this sucks because im out of oil and just wanna squish some out!

The batch of flowers I had before was just as dense pretty much but the yield was awesome. It wasn't as dry maybe, but certainly dense.

I am a rookie to extracts and TEKs, but I'm watching you pioneers in here and I'm really finding myself wanting to join in all the squishy fun so keep it up guys!

I do find my pucks have resin on them typically so I know I'm not getting all that I can. I'm using a Remington straightener (lowest temp is 300f) and body wait right now but you guys are making me want to buy some cuni plates from @Joel W. and turn my vice into a squishing machine...do we even have a name for the vice turned Rosin press?

Sizzle sounds too hot especially if you are seeing vapor. Some sizzle is normal.

Some moisture is key. Too dry is bad.

My guess is more pressure/bigger vise.

If the pucks are soaked in rosin, it probably needs more pressure.

ok. so i think im falling victim to too dry of bud and not enough pressure.

i saw some small precision vises (toolmaking and drill press vises) that have up to 2000lbs of clamping force. that should cut it right?

also what is a decent way to rehydrate buds w/out boveda packs? cotton ball with water in the jar with herbs?

Your vise does look a bit light-duty for this application. I looked up the model and couldn't find any clamping force ratings for it. If you upgrade, look for something capable of at least 3 tons (6000 lbs) of force.

Also, bud should be more moist than you'd want it to be for storage or vaporizing. The material should be soft and flexible, not crisp or crumbly at all.

You can use a cotton ball or anything else to re-moisturize, just make sure it doesn't touch the flowers. A moistened sponge can be attached to the underside of the lid of a jar, like in a humidor.

3 tons??? damn i was hoping a ton would be sufficient. was hoping to use something that does not need to be mounted or that isnt too big to be portable enough to bring along if needed.

what kind of pressure does the dnail press provide?

Vise tech.

Got a link for the vise @2clicker ?

yep. its exactly like THIS vise. id be surprised if it gets even up to a quarter ton in pressure.

Sorry. I meant a link to the vise you were thinking about buying.

I agree with @shark sandwich on 3 tons.

Edit: I think I use about 2 tons in my vise for 1/2g press and the puck is dry on the middle. There is still some rosin in the edges but not much. I get next to nothing on a second press.

THIS one is what i was looking into, but now i know 2000lbs (1 ton) is not enough pressure.

so i suppose a hefty vise is in order. problem is that im not seeing the max pressure spec on many im searching.

also i REALLY wanted a vise that could be used vertically. so that the jaws come together from top/bottom instead of side/side.

I have been wondering if this mattered much. When I saw @Joel W. do a 66 sec press with horizontal plates (I only just saw this video today, not sure how old it is) I realized that horizontal might actually be better as you can see the Rosin bubbling outward and upward and then falling back on itself almost which would make collection easier I would think.

I'm guessing that is too small as well but it may still work for small buds. 1/4g size.

Mount it to a wall or something vertical?

@farscaper was doing well with his pony vise. It has enough pressure to crush a hair iron anyways.

This is the vise I can recommend. I have taken it to 100 ft foot pounds of torque (+-10,000 psi) on the handle with steel jaws and it lived.

mounting it vertically is no sweat, but i was hoping for something that could be portable.

now im looking into bottle jacks. they are small and provide tons of pressure. would need a steel box or something to mount it to to press against.

didnt someone post up a pic of a bottle jack that was made to be an arbor press or something? @GuyLeDuche?

arbor press is another idea, but you would have to physically hold it during the press.

oh what to do...?

I've got a question here.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of postings earlier in this thread and in other threads showing lab tests on rosin and both times the rosin was ~30% THC? Am I mistaken? That would be significantly less 'actual yield' than what you can get with a safe solvent QWET extraction (~70%THC).

Did I not read the lab results correctly? I get the advantage of not buying solvent, but it seems like this is a bit of a white elephant in the room so I must be missing something. What am I missing or misunderstanding? Thanks.
