Herb Grinders

I agree. I have only been a grinder freak for a few months, but I haven't seen evidence of counterfeit high-end grinders (or evidence of any counterfeit grinders). But maybe I just haven't looked in the right places.

@PeteSeattle posted this in the Grasshopoer thread. I didn't see it posted in the last few pages, hope this isn't a repeat.

Does anyone know if there are any videos on the internet of grinders being made? I would look (and I will look), but I imagine all the results will be some stoner talking about grinders.

I spent some time watching videos of CNC machines yesterday. Pretty cool. But the videos I saw seem to be meant for CNC machine clients, so they're not exactly very useful to someone like me.

I'm inclined to think the video I am looking for does not exist, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A friend of mine works in a factory with CNC machines.. I'll see if he can make a grinder ;-)

I haven't seen anything going into any great detail on grinder manufacture, but I do remember seeing a couple of shots of the CNC mill and process used to make a Phoenician grinder in their videos on YouTube.
Can't be certain this is it as I'm at work and unable to view myself:

The clear bodied version of the Gr8tr is that plastic or glass? Cant find the info

Edit: found out via livechat it is a high grade plastic. I was hoping it to be glass.

A little breakdown of parts :)

So Zeus is Sharpstone? I've been wondering about Zeus grinders for a while, considering those Toronto guys always plug them in their videos, which are great videos.

I just got a Zeus Bolt grinder. Its garbage. Here are some pics
1) Look at the top how they grinded the metal. There are 'strings ' of metal coming off
zH0Oa24.jpg

2) Now take a look at the metal shavings around the edge of the circle
3PlK7ca.jpg

I've spent about 10min trying to scrape the lose metal parts off with a wooden stick. After 10min there are still metal particles coming off. What a joke of a $50 grinder.

It is crap and so is torontovaporizer.ca here is my experience with them http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-arizer-air.16415/page-278#post-862453

But don't take my word for it, goto yelp. If you include the 10 hidden reviews most of them are 1 star. Now there are some hokey reviews but if you read through them, you will see they don't stand behind their products

edit: apologies for my evangelism I just don't want my brothers and sisters here to make the same mistake I did

Can anyone speak to their thoughts on how the Santa Cruz shredder compares with a small space-case?

I have a small space case currently, but am debating picking up a second grinder so that I can experience alternative grinds or so that I can keep ground up sativa separate from indica (not that I usually have the selection).

The small space case has worked really well for me but the kief screen isn't remove able as far as I know and it probably could stand to have a deep cleaning but I'm not sure the best way to minimize waste when cleaning out the space case.

This thread is kinda a bear to sift through because there are so many different grinders out there and it's hard to keep track of who are the overall top dogs in performance and quality.

I'm sorry to hear that some people are having a rough time with their SCS and the consequential CS.

I hope it all gets straightened out.

I still love mine though, it never fails to tear up the scene . . . . in fact we were doing just that a little earlier today when we thought we'd pause for a moment and take in our surroundings . . .

So is that Glossy Green? What size? I love the medical imprint as well! Very nice! I got a medium matte green myself.

My metal grinder also has a fixed screen that gets very blocked up.

I soak the grinder for 10 mins in ISO. Then rub all parts of the grinder including the screen with a Cotten bud that is wetted with ISO.

You can then evaporate the ISO and you are left with a strong concentrate.

Large three piece SCS finally available on their website retailing for $66
Ooh, nice catch. I was just looking at this a few days ago to see if they'd released any larger 3-pieces. No complaints about my small 3-piece though; it's the best grinder I've owned.

Just had the chance to briefly look at a matte purple Cali Crusher grinder purchased by the boss @work..

I'm really glad I didn't buy one of these myself.

It feels cheap, thin & light and the anodizing is not very thick/durable as there are already marks.
The plastic ring is wafer thin and turning it feels really rough and not smooth in the slightest.

I agree. I might add a 4 piece small or a large 3piece to the collection though.

Very cool. You should post updates when you try it.

Also, an electric coffee grinder isn't as bad as people say it is. I've been testing one out, and it grinds the bud to whatever consistency I want (pulsing the blade instead of just turning it on and letting it turn the weed to dust), and separates a lot of kief. The benefit of the electric coffee grinder over even the pyramid tooth acrylic two-piece that comes with the volcano, is that it can get a fine grind even if the bud isn't dry enough to grind very well by hand.

As for the kief you can collect off the walls of the grinder, I examined it next to some kief that has fallen through a screen in one of my metal grinders, and it is very similar. Yes, the electrically ground kief has more plant matter in it, because it wasn't sifted, but if you just sift/rub it on a kief catching screen, what comes through is basically identical to what you get from normal 4 piece grinders. You can always just pour it back over the ground bud if you prefer, as well.

In general, even for 2-piece users, keeping parts 3 and 4 from a 4 piece grinder, and putting your ground bud in there to hold while you have your sessions, and in between sessions if you grind more than you use in one sitting, will collect you a nice amount of kief, without making any noticeable changes to the herb's potency. Each hit is barely changed.

My experiences with an electric coffee grinder are different than yours, @EverythingsHazy, the dust on the side was nothing at all like the kief and crystals I've collected through a four piece grinder. What I saw was plant matter through and through, very little shininess or stickiness which is counter to the kief I've collected so far. When vaped it didn't form the sticky glob that kief does, but was more like pulverized herb.

Did you sift it through a kief catching screen? I saw a noticeable difference before and after doing so. Also, how fine did you grind your bud? If it was super dry and turned into powder, I can see the kief being "contaminated" by plant matter bits small enough to get through the screen.

It wasn't very dry when I ground it up but I also didn't sift it through a screen either. But that's kinda my point, if you grind it up and use it as it is then it isn't really kief. If you filter it, perhaps yes, perhaps no as the coffee grinder really obliterates the plant so you'd get small stem and leaf particles sifting through as well. I thought the reason kief screen work so well is that the tricomes, crystals, etc -> kief falls through since the grinder can't reduce the bud to smaller than the pore size while kief is small enough to pass through.

Just used "as is", the stuff you can brush off the walls of the grinder, isn't pure kief. It definitely has visible green plant matter in it. Put through the screen of a 4-piece grinder, it looked the same to the naked eye

I don't grind the bud much finer than I can get with my 2-piece volcano acrylic grinder, when using the electric coffee grinder, so when I sifted it, it was indistinguishable from regular kief. Had I ground it finer, I don't doubt that more plant matter would get through the screen.

I'll see if I can get microscopic pics of the kief next time, to compare.

Here is some of the stuff brushed off of the walls of the electric coffee grinder.

And then here is the same stuff rubbed through a 4-piece grinder screen.

It looks a little green in the microscope pictures, but it didn't look like that when looking through the eyepiece. Only when taking a picture through the eyepiece. All of the kief in both microscope pictures looked more like the outer edges of beige/clear kief in the first microscope pic.
