Dear Ohio Stoners and Users of Cannabis

Why must the choice be between this shabby and corrupt initiative and the status quo? There are other alternatives. Don't let oligarchs scare you into selling out. I don't understand all this moaning that we'll never get another chance for 20 years blah blah. Why? The whole country is legalizing now. Sharp, would-be oligarchs are trying to seize the opportunity to take over the biz in your state before people understand the various models for legalization. What's to stop drafting a far better, non-exclusive arrangement and running it in 2016, when turnout will be higher?

There are some bits in there I might quibble with, but that is headed in the right direction. If you start with something like that there is much less to overcome/correct. That seems infinitely preferable to the fat-cat initiative.

Another thought to ponder: what about existing Ohio growers? I don't know where Ohio gets its pot now but there must be some small to medium local guys in Ohio, one would think. Are they just left to twist in the wind by this? The concession went to somebody else, you're still illegal? Have you no loyalty to these buddies who helped you out at great personal risk over the years? Leaving them in the cold is key to creating a black market that thrives and undercuts the legal market.

Ah, the best marketing money can buy.

The language is too vague to be able to say some of those claims.

Where does one get their seeds from if you want to grow your own? Or do you have to buy starter plants? My gut says they will controls all aspects of it from seed to plant so they have their grip on evything.

For some reason, Monsanto comes into my mind and that's not good.

You're right. It's not good that Monsanto comes to mind because there's no actual linkage here to a company whose name is colloquially synonymous with evil.

Yes, there will be regulation. Is that a surprise? There's a good chance there will be overregulation, given the widespread prejudice and misinformation out there regarding cannabis. This will not be helped by shooting down opportunities for ending prohibition of the substance. Colorado tracks everything seed to sale and I daresay all of us would prefer that to prohibition. Furthermore, the only way we're going to get to a place where the price falls appropriately and the regulation reaches a reasonable equilibrium is to start this process. The end of prohibition may be inevitable in the long run, but it is just silly to oppose something like this for the reasons advanced because you think there will be endless opportunities to make perfect law in the future. The only objections I have seen to this bill are ideological in nature as well as being vague (and likely based on incorrect information).

The Belville article is good. It lays out the case quite well. When you add that there are going to be many more growers than it actually looked like, it doesn't seem like such a bad deal.

Or the Issue could be defeated and people continue to go to jail, many people don't get access to what they need (and if Issue 2 passes you may find this way blocked in the future from what I hear, when mounting voter initiatives will become prohibitively expensive and blockable by the legislature - assuming that info was correct, of course... how long will it take the OH state legislature to pass legalization, btw?).

That'll be my last entry in the debate here unless I get some new info to share. The two people going back and forth the most lately are from California, so maybe we should give some Ohioans a chance. We look to be having a confusing scrum brewing here when it comes to our 2016 legalization efforts.

Rationalize all you want; it's still a terrible deal. Even Belville repeatedly says it's 'shitty', 'sucks', 'worst form of legalization', etc. This is being marketed as a choice between locking people up or this deal. But Ohio has decriminalized small amounts of cannabis. You pay a pretty small fine and something may or may not go on your record. Who gets locked up? The same non-cartel growers this law proposes to continue locking up. Bogus argument.

It is not inconceivable that some of the posters on this thread are working for the cartel which is trying to get the exclusive concession.

I'm not even going to vote. Still, I feel like I am pro-Issue 3. Big time. Here's why: Cannabis will be legal nationwide within five or 10 years, if not sooner. When cannabis is legalized nationwide, the "bad" parts of this law won't matter anymore.

Still, the bad parts of this law are infinitely better than what we have now. Everything about Issue 3 is better than what we have now.

At only age 41, I don't have five or 10 years. So yeah, I take it personally that you keep trying to persuade people to keep my life as miserable as possible until I die. And even if I was in good health, I would take it personally that you keep trying to persuade people to keep thousands of other people's lives as miserable as possible until they die.

Your stance is horribly selfish.

Cannabis legalization is on the ballot right now. There is nothing on the ballot for 2016, and there is no guarantee that there will be.

You mentioned loyalty a day or two ago. I am not loyal to anyone (except maybe my cat). Loyalty is not a good thing. Loyalty is responsible for every religious war or conflict there has ever been. Loyalty is why our history books are filled with names like Adolf Hitler. No loyalty to Hitler = No Holocaust.

So don't try to use the loyalty angle to persuade me. Hopefully that doesn't work with anyone else, either.

Also, if people have figured out a way to grow cannabis without being caught at any time before today, I'm pretty sure they're not all going to forget how to grow cannabis without being caught if this issue passes.

You know why I'm not going to vote next month? Mostly because I'm lucky to be able to feed myself and take a bath every day.

Well said Aimless Ryan and you are absolutely justified in feeling that way....as do I....and not just because I'm working undercover for THE CARTEL! (keep that just between us by the way!)

Gunky, LOL!! Maybe you should lay off of that heady sativa for awhile and instead go with some
of the more mellow indica!? LOL!

Oh, by the way Gunkster, your grow is looking primo this year... at least from what we've seen from the aerial shots we've taken so far! LOL!

The above is a pretty amazing reply. What? Get over yourself! So absurd. And you pull out Hitler, too! The last refuge of internet scoundrels. How you can argue that black market cannabis exists now and will exist even if the amendment passes and then in the same breath say I'm trying to keep your life as miserable as possible until you die? You do realize that a monopoly will likely cause the price to go up, not down, don't you?

Yeah loyalty! As in not throwing the people who supplied you with cannabis for years under a bus because some slick scam promises you instant legal weed.

And let me add one more thing. It is possible for reasonable people to disagree about this issue without resorting to ad hominem attacks. Two of you are now going after me personally, rather than trying to show why the measure should be passed. One of them is passing off a weird sob story that barely makes sense - nobody dare say anything against this measure because if you do you are causing me to die painfully. Uh huh. The other appears to have joined the board recently for the purpose of shilling for this law.

Dude, you don't get it. I wasn't calling you Hitler. You don't even get analogies. Because you turned what I said into an analogy, which it was not. I wasn't calling you Hitler. There is nothing in what I said that makes it seem like I was calling you Hitler, or comparing you to Hitler, or anything like what you're trying to imply that I said.

If it had been an analogy, comparing you to Hitler, it would have been set up something like this: Blank is to blank as you are to Hitler. Not what I said.

In fact, it wasn't even about you. It had nothing to do with you. If you're taking what I said personally, it's because you made it personal.

What I said about Hitler had to do with one thing: loyalty. Without loyalty, we would have never heard of Hitler. Or anyone whose name might often be used in the same sentence as his name. You made it about you. Get over yourself.

No, you don't get it. If you are reduced to mentioning Hitler, you've already lost.

WOW!!

When you step in it Gunky you REALLY step in it!

The proponents of Issue 3 now rest their case and relinquish the floor to Mr. Gunky from the great State of Paranoia.

Voters should reject a very bad, terrible, not good, bad initiative (under which the state and local police would become the enforcement arm of a cartel and would arrest non-cartel commercial growers!) and do it the right way next year, IMO.

Save the vote for the 2016 project to legalize.
Although I'm extremely curious on what happens if both Issue 2 and Issue 3 pass. Maybe the courts will throw out the 10 grower posse, the "Control" posse, and all the other crap that doesn't belong there. Pretty much legalizing it they way it should be.

If anybody's wondering, we won't know anything until at least 9:00 EST. The polls were supposed to close at 7:30, but voting hours were extended an hour and a half in Cincinnati because some voting machines weren't working this morning or something.

EDIT (9:27): Not looking good at this point. With 31% of precincts having reported, it's 35% Yes, 65% No.

Pretty surprising results - and doesn't bode well for changes at the federal level. Had this gone the other way, we might have seen some movement from the Presidential candidates.

I'm disheartened.
