Do You Increase Temp While Vaping Herb to Achieve Full Extraction?

  • Yes, I increase temperature while vaporizing a load of herb.

  • No, I have a sweet spot and I stick with it.

I have always started at low temperatures and bumped it up twice, usually, from there in order to keep getting vapor. I assumed everyone did this unless they were looking for a specific cannabinoid effect from a certain temperature, but from reading it seems that there are a significant number of people who find their temp and stick to it.

Depends... Usually when I'm using the portable (Pax2) I just leave it on the temp that is my "sweet spot." When I'm at home (Cloud EVO) is a whole other thing, as I start out on a low temp (about 10:00) get a few nice hits. When I come back to the same bowl I'll turn it up (to 12:00) to get a couple, then if I still got something at 12 turn it up to about 2-3:00 for a couple more.

I am usually in a hurry, so I turn it on full, then after a minute, I start vaping as it's getting hotter. Then I dial it down before combustion and leave it there for the next round if needed.

Edit: So In that sense, I am increasing temp while vaping, but I also have a sweet spot.

It also depends on the vaporizer I'm using whether or not I bump up the heat. The Enano I usually keep it at the same temp throughout my session. It takes a few min for the nano's heat to go up once changed.

It depends on the strain and moisture a bit, but on the Nano it's always between 6.0 and 6.5, because i want the highest possible effect, without charring material.
Because there's no exact temp dial, and i would like to stay away from the above 200 C, i keep my abv light to have some sort of insurance of not getting in too hot temp territory, if that makes sense lol.

Straight to max on vapes that don't combust (herbie, minivap, mighty, solo, ascent). For my lsv, close to max. Once I take an extended t-break, I'll try temp stepping but right now, I feel my tolerance is too high.

Excellent Thread @KimDracula !

Even after 4 months of exclusive Vaping, I'm still dialing in nuances to further improve my experience .

As of now, I dial it to 12:00 on the DBV, and it stays there throughout the entire session, still getting a full extraction by adjusting draw speed accordingly.

But the nights before, I did the same exact procedure at 1 o'clock, then 12:30.

I'm fairly sure I've found that sweet spot at 12, but I thought I had my sweet spot long ago...lol.

Just another quality of Vaporization that still boggles my mind.

@ all long time Vapor connoisseurs,
Does the process continue to improve even after years of exclusive vaporization?

Or do you finally find the perfect temp, and draw? A peak experience every time per se?

Are you saying you don't think you would be as satisfied, due to tolerance, from stepping temperature up to the max? I've been assuming that we're both getting the same extraction, but it's just available to you all at once since you start at max. I like to get a full extraction, but chase flavor so I like to get a couple nice lower temp rips. Do you disagree? Did I misunderstand?

@Hashtag46&2 : It seems like I reach plateaus in my vaping. When I got my EQ and mastered drawing on it with no water tool was the first step. Finding the right temperatures was another step. Adding water, learning how often to change the water to preserve taste, how much to use, and how much diffusion I preferred was another. I finally reached the final plateau with my EQ and my chosen bubbler with fan assist, knowing everything had to be very clean. Then I got the EVO and I found a new plateau because it's just a better vape, especially for what is important to me (water filtration, easy to keep clean, awesome flavor retention). I feel like we never reach the end of this journey since our lives and needs change (as well as tolerance and vaping rituals) and because we have an awesome forum like this where we can learn from each other.

I think I prefer getting medicated as quick as possible (personal preference) and want max temp to lessen the duration of my session. I know others prefer getting the most out of their session and temp step for the experience. I believe both ways get the same extraction. The reason why I say I need a t-break before trying this is the belief that I won't feel anything at the lower temps. I guess it's because I have been enjoying concentrates too much.

Unless I am misunderstanding the way this all works (certainly possible) I think when you start at a high temp you may miss some of the low temp terps that just burn off rather than being extracted and inhaled. I think to get the whole bandwidth you need to temp step to some degree. That is demonstrated by the lack of flavor when starting at a higher temp range.
That would be logical and how it seems to me, but what do I know? :)

I'm in the 'depends what vape I'm using' camp. Though I generally start the day with a few lower temp sessions of just a hit or two to help stave off nausea and give me an appetite, at night (or starting in the late afternoon) I generally go for higher temps for pain relief and more of a relaxing body buzz.

I've kinda run the gambit from where vaping at a certain temp seemed all so important to now using mainly simpler designed vapes with no adjustable temp control or digital readout and judging where I'm at by taste and color of avb.

I added bolding above.
IMO, starting at high temps still gives you all the low temp flavors BUT all the high temp flavors are there too so it's a very different taste.
For example, lemon seems to be a low temp taste. At low temp my Super Lemon Haze if very lemony.
If you go directly to 445 F, it does not taste so lemony as it's mixed with all the medium and high temp flavors.
Lemon is not so isolated/ predominant if you go directly to 4454 F

Oh, that's definitely true. You're right. In my response I overlooked the loss of terps (the whole reason I work up to the high temps in the first place, of course). I was trying to figure out if mixchu69 thought he was going to lose some of the high by temp stepping up to the max rather than starting there because that seemed backwards to me. It seems like as long as you ended up at max you would get the same extraction either way (minus some flavor with max power for the whole session). What mixchu69 did point out was that he is usually looking for a faster extraction which makes sense. Concentrates definitely jack tolerance up quickly, that's for sure. I keep my use of those incredibly conservative and still have to take a break from 'em regularly to keep my tolerance within reach. I hate taking a giant flower rip and barely feeling it.

@MinnBobber : That makes a lot of sense as well. Especially when it comes to low vaporization temperatures, maybe the difference in taste that we're experiencing is more due to the blend of all the different cannabinoids, terps, etc. at high temperatures vs. the more isolated releases when temp stepping.

it depends on the herb, cause i just gotta see some amount of vapor, and higher scratches that itch. however, these days, with some decent commercial herb in the stash jar, i keep the temp right around 400F. Now, the herb in the oven is 50F lower than this, until the draw, so extraction with a sweep of temps up to the displayed temp.

my concern is that going too high will start vaporizing the plant waxes and other non-desirable plant components.

at 400F, i can see the draw tube begin to fill with traces of vapor, then remove the draw tube to get super fresh tasting vapor. after a couple of hits like this, follow with fuller hits to milk the tube and get a full hit of vapor.

now, as it turns out, my vape tends to drift about 5F higher by the end of the 7.5 min session (thermocouple isn't too accurate (4 bits), but it is consistent, thankfully) ... but lately i've just hit the "-4F" button to keep the vapor from getting harsh from other plant nasties.

tl;dr - no, don't increase from a proven setpoint temperature.

It depends on what kind of high I'm looking for and whether it's a new fill or not....

If I'm looking for a overall buzz I go to the high temps and work my way down. I do this to give the bowl an initial heat soak. I hit each level once and start at level 6 (401F), then 5 (392F), then 4 (383F), then 3 (374F).

If I'm looking for a more head based high I start at level 2 (365F), then level 3 (374F) then Level 4 twice (383F).

I've mentioned in another post that I keep track of the hits I've had on a bowl/fill - If I know there is only 4 to 6 hits left in a bowl I hit it at level 6 (401F) till beat.

When I first got into vaping and the Solo I just dialed up level 4 (383F) and stayed there.

Thinking upon this subject a bit further...

Vapes like the DBV, I started out on day 1... (No prior Vaporization experience other than a few sessions with a SSV with no proper guidance)...

I turned up my unit to 3:30 and just drew very fast upon a fellow FC DBV owner's advice.. (Mark was his real name I believe.. Can't recall his SN)

I still got loads of flavor, but this was in comparison to combustion.
And I do believe we get those very volatile lightweight molecular Terpenes at higher temperatures, but it is masked by heavier Monoterpenes

I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not getting into Vapor sooner. What an epic enlightenment upon my beloved Cannabis!

I've become a flavor chaser, when I was a cloud chaser only a couple months ago.

Although, even at low temps, and holding in my vapor, exhale, inhale tech... I still exhale rather thick clouds, and the room is complete fogged.

I really think last nights sesh was the best I've had yet, 12 o'clock through the entire bowl.... 0.1 g load along with a moderate amount of hash lasted over 30 minutes, and I know I had more draws available... But...

I was watching The Cleveland Show, and I was already blitzed, as I was taking another hit... The show had me laughing, and of course...the dreaded blowback on my heating element.

I thought I finally figured out how to avoid it, but it is inevitable if you're high AF and watching funny shit.

I used to leave my wand in the HC.. But found removing it after each hit reduces the risk of blowback, and extends the session somewhat.

Thanks again to all the FC members and Mods.
You guys have literally changed my life in a most positive manner.
